A bard walks in on a dark elf dealing cards to a beholder, a mind flayer, a demon, a grouchy-looking wizard, and what is either a vampire or a really pale guy with an unfortunate widow’s peak.

The set-up for a bad joke? Nope (well, maybe that, too)—just a typical day at the office for adventuring partners Heloise, Erithea’s most beautiful, witty, talented, and occasionally prone to talking in the third-person half-elven bard, and her powerful hill giant companion, Grimple, who doesn’t look like a hill giant anymore because he made the mistake of crossing a lich and getting illusioned (yes, it’s a word…or, at least, we’re going to pretend it’s one) into something even more ridiculous. (Grimple is kind of an idiot.)

It turns out that getting adventuring work when your hill giant companion looks like a sickly gnome (despite retaining his giant strength) isn’t easy, so what’s a beautiful, witty, and talented half-elven bard to do? The answer, of course, is obvious: set off on a quest, idiotic hill giant partner in tow, to confront the lich who transformed him in the first place, and look really good doing it. Along the way, chances are good that adventures will be had, wrongs will be righted, songs will be sung, monsters will be smited, treasure will be won, and, perhaps, love will be made to burly dwarves (or, more accurately, dwarf, singular—I’m not really a party girl).

Part parody, part homage, and all woman, The Chronicle of Heloise & Grimple lampoons the greatest fantasy adventures of yore even as it upholds the very best traditions of the genre (and, I might add, looks really good doing it).

But, don’t take my word for it—here’s what people across Erithea are saying about The Chronicle of Heloise & Grimple:

“The Chronicle of Heloise & Grimple is one of the greatest sagas ever set to music by one of the, um, wait—what did you want me to say here? I can’t read your handwriting. ‘One of the most talented, beautiful and sweet’—does that say ‘sweet-canned? Seriously? Because I’m not saying that. Wait—why don’t I get title credit, too? If it weren’t for me, you and Grimple would never have…hey! Hey! Ow! Put your dagger away, Heloise! Fine—I’ll say it! It’s great. Geez. Just read it, all right?
--Kevil, Wizard

“Heloise is all right for an ugly elf. And she’s very good at stabbing things.
--Tongclutcher Kilnfire, Dwarf, Master Weaponsmith of Dormenklehs

“Urk kunk grummh nuk kur grubble knuck.
--High Chieftain Gnurk Blurglesplick of the Grandorian Orc Tribe (okay, so not all of these testimonials are complimentary, but, hey—I can’t be held accountable for what spurned lovers say about me or my work)

“That Heloise is a genius, and she has one heck of a sweet can. And, boy, can she sing.
--Heloise the Bard

Ah, but we’ve already got ahead of ourselves

Miss Mildred Percy is a spinster. She does not dance, she has long stopped dreaming, and she certainly does not have adventures. That is, until her great uncle has the audacity to leave her an inheritance, one that includes a dragon’s egg.

The egg - as eggs are wont to do - decides to hatch, and Miss Mildred Percy is suddenly thrust out of the role of “spinster and general wallflower and into the unprecedented position of “spinster and keeper of dragons.

But England has not seen a dragon since well, ever. And now Mildred must contend with raising a dragon (that should not exist), kindling a romance (with a humble vicar), and embarking on an adventure she never thought could be hers for the taking.]]>

<![CDATA[The Tainted Cup (Shadow of the Leviathan, #1)]]> 150247395
Called in to investigate this mystery is Ana Dolabra, an investigator whose reputation for brilliance is matched only by her eccentricities.

At her side is her new assistant, Dinios Kol. Din is an engraver, magically altered to possess a perfect memory. His job is to observe and report, and act as his superior’s eyes and ears--quite literally, in this case, as among Ana’s quirks are her insistence on wearing a blindfold at all times, and her refusal to step outside the walls of her home.

Din is most perplexed by Ana’s ravenous appetite for information and her mind’s frenzied leaps—not to mention her cheerful disregard for propriety and the apparent joy she takes in scandalizing her young counterpart. Yet as the case unfolds and Ana makes one startling deduction after the next, he finds it hard to deny that she is, indeed, the Empire’s greatest detective.

As the two close in on a mastermind and uncover a scheme that threatens the safety of the Empire itself, Din realizes he’s barely begun to assemble the puzzle that is Ana Dolabra—and wonders how long he’ll be able to keep his own secrets safe from her piercing intellect.

Featuring an unforgettable Holmes-and-Watson style pairing, a gloriously labyrinthine plot, and a haunting and wholly original fantasy world, The Tainted Cup brilliantly reinvents the classic mystery tale.]]>

<![CDATA[A Drop of Corruption (Shadow of the Leviathan, #2)]]> 213618143 The brilliant detective Ana Dolabra may have finally met her match in the gripping sequel to The Tainted Cup—from the bestselling author of The Founders Trilogy.

In the canton of Yarrowdale, at the very edge of the Empire’s reach, an impossible crime has occurred. A Treasury officer has disappeared into thin air—abducted from his quarters while the door and windows remained locked from the inside, in a building whose entrances and exits are all under constant guard.

To solve the case, the Empire calls on its most brilliant and mercurial investigator, the great Ana Dolabra. At her side, as always, is her bemused assistant Dinios Kol.

Before long, Ana’s discovered that they’re not investigating a disappearance, but a murder—and that the killing was just the first chess move by an adversary who seems to be able to pass through warded doors like a ghost, and who can predict every one of Ana’s moves as though they can see the future.

Worse still, the killer seems to be targeting the high-security compound known as the Shroud. Here, the Empire's greatest minds dissect fallen Titans to harness the volatile magic found in their blood. Should it fall, the destruction would be terrible indeed—and the Empire itself will grind to a halt, robbed of the magic that allows its wheels of power to turn.

Din has seen Ana solve impossible cases before. But this time, with the stakes higher than ever and Ana seemingly a step behind their adversary at every turn, he fears that his superior has finally met an enemy she can’t defeat.]]>

Beasts in My Belfry 801573 A hilarious record that no Durrell fan will want to miss. - Sunday Telegraph

If you looked you would think that his mind was full of beautiful and poetic thoughts...A ball of food would make its appearance at the base of the long neck and would travel upwards with all the majesty of a department store lift. The ball was generally the size of a coconut and would end its travels by rolling into his mouth. A satisfied expression would replace the look of thoughtful genius and Peter's lower jaw would recommence its monotonous movement.

A loving chronicle of jitter-bugging gnus, singing duets with a bear, stealing eggs to feed the Arctic foxes, practising tiger sniffs...Highly entertaining and informative. - The Times

Durrell manages to convey not only that he loves animals, but that he enjoys life too - and wants you to enjoy it with him. - Daily Mirror

My Mom read this to me after my surgery and it was just a wonderful experience for a decently brutal time. We genuinely tried to solve the murder, swapping theories and determining motives from mis-directs (my shit memory really came in clutch here to keep up the suspense because I'd entirely forgotten the details). We eye-rolled heavily at Deanna questioning Saduk's virility at a wake. We took the requisite time to mock the author's obsession with describing eyebrows (it probably wasn't even that bad, but once we noticed it we couldn't stop noting every mention). We enjoyed Riker's diplomatic suffering, as should you if you have any sense. We actually made a few correct predications, which neither of us manage to consistently do reading mysteries, despite the amount we consume.

Also my Mom is quite upset with how often Worf smiles in this book. "Worf doesn't grin" she firmly protests, and I agree with her (minus a few exceptions like at the end of 'A Fistful of Datas'). At least in my brain, Worf is generally more of a 'deep chest rumble in the face of glorious victory with eyes glinting' kinda Klingon for most trivial 'happy' matters, and they had him smiling left right and centre. Anyway. Yes Mom, I stand by your adamant complaint.

I have quite warm and fuzzy memories associated with this book now, just because of how much fun it was to have it read to me and enjoy it so immediately with someone else while also being flat on my back an in considerable discomfort. We both looked forward to The Reading Hours all day and we're quite bereft it's over. We're already discussing another ST:TNG novel to start because 1 - Trekkies gonna Trek, and 2 - they're light enough to enjoy while I'm still recovering. Fun with friends, 10/10 would recommend reading to someone for regular gentle mocking of 'just good enough' writing, familiar characters, a fun plot, and genuine enjoyment.

Original Review
Ohhhhh I don't know what to do with this book. To be summed up in one thought, this book is the Star Trek TNG version of a 'whodunnit'. I must say, I was disappointed the author made the ending particularly obvious (to me anyhow) but it was still a nice mindless read. Definitely not one I'd throw at people, but it's alright if you're in the mood for a Sherlock Holmes Star Trek style (before anyone murders me, the writing isn't nearly as amazing as Sir C.D. nor is Worf as good as Sherlock. But hey, he tries. He really tries.).]]>

The Boxcar Librarian 214325867 🎧Run Time = 13 hours and 20 minutes

A brand-new 2025 release from an author whose writing “historical fiction fans will adore (New York Times bestselling author Madeline Martin): The stories of three women converge in 1936 Montana when editor Millie Lang arrives from DC to work on a series of travel books only to find a town riddled with mystery, corruption, and secrets.

Inspired by true events, a thrilling Depression-era novel from the author of The Librarian of Burned Books about a woman’s quest to uncover a mystery surrounding a local librarian and the Boxcar Library—a converted mining train that brought books to isolated rural towns in Montana.

When Works Progress Administration (WPA) editor Millie Lang finds herself on the wrong end of a potential political scandal, she’s shipped off to Montana to work on the state’s American Guide Series—travel books intended to put the nation’s destitute writers to work.

Millie arrives to an eclectic staff claiming their missed deadlines are due to sabotage, possibly from the state’s powerful Copper Kings who don’t want their long and bloody history with union organizers aired for the rest of the country to read. But Millie begins to suspect that the answer might instead lie with the town’s mysterious librarian, Alice Monroe.

More than a decade earlier, Alice Monroe created the Boxcar Library in order to deliver books to isolated mining towns where men longed for entertainment and connection. Alice thought she found the perfect librarian to staff the train car in Colette Durand, a miner’s daughter with a shotgun and too many secrets behind her eyes.

Now, no one in Missoula will tell Millie why both Alice and Colette went out on the inaugural journey of the Boxcar Library, but only Alice returned.

The three women’s stories dramatically converge in the search to uncover what someone is so desperately trying to what happened to Colette Durand.

Inspired by the fascinating, true history of Missoula’s Boxcar Library, the novel blends the story of the strong, courageous women who survived and thrived in the rough and rowdy West with that of the power of standing together to fight for workers lives. And through it all shines the capacity of books to provide connection and light to those who need it most.]]>

The Dead Mountaineer's Inn 22466714
But he hadn’t counted on the other vacationers, an eccentric bunch including a famous hypnotist, a physicist with a penchant for gymnastic feats, a sulky teenager of indeterminate gender, and the mysterious Mr. and Mrs. Moses. And as the chalet fills up, strange things start happening—things that seem to indicate the presence of another, unseen guest. Is there a ghost on the premises? A prankster? Something more sinister? And then an avalanche blocks the mountain pass, and they’re stuck.

Which is just about when they find the corpse. Meaning that Glebksy’s vacation is over and he’s embarked on the most unusual investigation he’s ever been involved with. In fact, the further he looks into it, the more Glebsky realizes that the victim may not even be human.

In this late novel from the legendary Russian sci-fi duo—here in its first-ever English translation—the Strugatskys gleefully upend the plot of many a Hercule Poirot mystery—and the result is much funnier, and much stranger, than anything Agatha Christie ever wrote.]]>

This is a bit of a generous 4 stars but 3 didn't seem right for how much I love this series as a whole. Sadly, I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first book. Just didn't gel as much with either of our MCs. I liked Violet more, but Maude just.... wasn't it. Nothing objectively wrong, but too naive and peppy and young for me. So that made enjoying this harder. Still had fun and was engrossed. Hawthorne and Ross and our ghostly friend helped too. Plus the animals. Good parrot, Dorian! Normally I loved closed-room shit but meh. I'll admit this book has a stupidly high bar to be up against. I did enjoy the story and the suspense but I didn't devour this one in the same "nothing else matters; must read" kinda way.

That's okay. I know from my error and fucked up way of reading this series that I'll enjoy the next one plenty. And now I actually have all the background to make it even better. Yeah, I definitely expect some flat out explosions of emotion in my future - good and bad.

But then....wait, this is a trilogy!! Right! So I dragged my sorry, coughing butt on a bus (masking!) and got on a bus and went to a DIFFERENT library in the dead of icy, snowy Winter because that's how hooked I am. Freya Marske, if that's set me back.... Fuck it. Worth it. I haven't gotten so immersed and engaged and losing my shit over a book series like this in a year. Man, reading is awesome.

Previous reviews have recapped the plot successfully so I'll just do some shallow dives:

The writing actually took me a hot minute to get used to after coming from a very direct writing style in my previous read. So many metaphors and imagery. Safe to say it grew on me. The diversity was perfect. Lovely. The romance simmered and simmered and boiled to a point where I was actively having to stop myself from skipping ahead just so they'd brush pinky fingers or some kind of fucking contact and I could release the breath I was holding. The payoff was absolutely gorgeous, so worth it. Ten million points for not sticking a premature "I love you" in at the end like it's necessary to show true devotion and care. This ending was better.
The magic system was interesting too. The villans were pure evil and I wanted to kill them, straight up. Ugh. The other characters were witty, intelligent, and didn't make stupid and annoying decisions which made me like them and enjoy the read even more. I was worried there would be a lot of constant denial and convincing with discovering magic (a believable trope I'm done with) but no. Brilliant.

The thing I noticed was how compelling this was. When I was reading, I wanted to get back into the book and BE READING. It was distracting me while I did other things. The world was so real and enjoyable and I cared about the characters and their families and of course, the blistering and sweet romance.

Overall - I'm grateful that this book got me through two days of feeling like shit and brought back that childhood joy of picking up a book and diving into a wonderful story. Highly recommend.]]>

So first of all, full disclosure: I read half of the 3rd book in this trilogy thinking it was book one. Let's not talk about it. Instead, let me point out that I'm sick and on an unfortunately necessary grocery trip, I very nicely manipulated and cajoled my Mom into driving me to one other very important stop - the library. Y'know when you feel a good cold coming on and you know your ass is gonna be stuck to a couch for 5-7 days? Yeah, well, I put my faith in this book and it 100% let me down because I flew through through in under 48 hours leaving a key 3-5 days of this cold remaining!!

But then....wait, this is a trilogy!! Right! So I dragged my sorry, coughing butt on a bus (masking!) and got on a bus and went to a DIFFERENT library in the dead of icy, snowy Winter because that's how hooked I am. Cagey and argumentative, Alan is only in this for the money. The aristocratic Lord Hawthorn, with all his unearned power, is everything that Alan hates. And unfortunately, Alan happens to be everything that Jack wants in one gorgeous, infuriating package.

When a plot to seize unimaginable power comes to a head at Cheetham Hall―Jack’s ancestral family estate, a land so old and bound in oaths that it’s grown a personality as prickly as its owner―Jack, Alan and their allies will become entangled in a night of champagne, secrets, and bloody sacrifice . . . and the foundations of magic in Britain will be torn up by the roots before the end.]]>

#LoveMUTTS: A MUTTS Treasury 34536948
In MUTTS , Patrick McDonnell strikes a delicate balance between lighthearted fun and responsible social commentary through the exploits of Earl the dog and Mooch the cat.

Earl and Mooch, along with supporting sidekicks Shtinky Puddin', Sourpuss, Guard Dog, and Crabby, humorously approach a range of subjects--from napping and daydreaming to summer vacations and Christmas anticipations--in addition to tackling important issues like responsible pet ownership, animal shelters, and saving our endangered species.]]>

The youthful Elric is a cynical and melancholy king, heir to a nation whose 100,000-year rule of the world ended less than 500 years hence. More interested in brooding contemplation than holding the throne, Elric is a reluctant ruler, but he also realizes that no other worthy successor exists and the survival of his once-powerful, decadent nation depends on him alone. Elric's nefarious, brutish cousin Yrkoon has no patience for his physically weak kinsman, and he plots constantly to seize Elric's throne, usually over his dead body. Elric of Melniboné follows Yrkoon's scheming, reaching its climax in a battle between Elric and Yrkoon with the demonic runeblades Stormbringer and Mournblade. In this battle, Elric gains control of the soul-stealing Stormbringer, an event that proves pivotal to the Elric saga. --Paul Hughes]]>

Yield Under Great Persuasion 218108277
When they were both nine years old, Lyford smashed Tam’s entry into the village’s vegetable competition. Nearly twenty years later, Tam hasn’t forgiven the bastard. No one understands how deeply he was hurt that day, how it set a pattern of small disappointments and misfortunes that would run through the rest of his life. Now Tam has reconciled himself to the fact that love and affection are for other people, that the gods don’t care and won’t answer any of his prayers (not even the one about afflicting Lyford with a case of flesh-eating spiders to chew off his privates), and that life is inherently mundane, joyless, and drab.

And then, the very last straw: Tam discovers that Lyford (of all people!) bears the divine favor of Angarat, the goddess Tam feels most betrayed and abandoned by. In his hurt and anger, Tam packs up and prepares to leave the village for good.

But the journey doesn’t take him far, and Tam soon finds himself set on a quest for the most difficult of all possible prizes: Self care, forgiveness, a second chance... and somehow the unbelievably precious knowledge that there is at least one person who loves Tam for exactly who he is—and always has.]]>

I didn't like how Troi was just kinda of there doing absolutely nothing for, without exaggeration, 90% of the story considering she was on the cover and the back implied she'd play a larger part. She really could have too, but instead she was under-used almost to the point where I wondered why they bothered putting her on the crashed shuttle anyway.

The hormonal and angsty teenagers bit didn't interest me either.

I enjoyed the concept of the Shapers (I wish I could watch something like that happen IRL), and the Tenarin refugee arc was interesting.

I kinda knew where this was heading a little over 50% through, but there's something to be said about leaning back and enjoying a story even if parts are predictable. It's relaxing, and I enjoy the world - so be it. Not every book has to be dark and complex with incredible twists, some just have to be fun and entertaining, and this was that.

<![CDATA[The Department of Sensitive Crimes (Detective Varg, #1)]]> 40988964 The Department of Sensitive Crimes is Scandinavian Blanc, vastly different from Scandinavian Noir. There is nothing noir about the world of Ulf Varg, Detective Inspector in the Sensitive Crimes Department of the Criminal Investigation Authority for the city of Malmö, Sweden. Ulf is concerned with odd, but not too threatening crimes, such as a stab wound to the back of the knee caused by an unknown hand, young women who allow their desperation for a boyfriend to get the better of them, and peculiar goings-on in a spa on Sweden's south coast.

Of course, Ulf is a Swedish detective, and Swedish detectives, by convention, lead lives beset with problems of one sort or another. For a start, there is his name: Ulf means “wolf in modern Swedish, and Varg derives from the Old Norse word for “wolf. But his character is far from vulpine: Ulf is a sympathetic, well-educated, and likeable man, with a knowledge of and interest in Scandinavian- and modern art. He has a dog named Marten, the only dog in Sweden capable of lip-reading (but only in Swedish). Martin becomes depressed and needs treatment. Dogs in Sweden are apparently particularly prone to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). But this is summer—so there must be something else going on.

Ulf has a number of colleagues into whose lives we gain insight. There is Anna, married to an anaesthetist, but very fond of Ulf; Erik, whose sole interest is fishing; Carl, whose father is a famous Lutheran theologian who has written a book on Danish philosopher Kierkegaard; then there is Blomquist from the uniformed branch, who goes on and on about his health problems but seems to have extraordinary luck in investigations. There is also Ulf's psychotherapist, Dr. Svensson, whose observations on Ulf's life—and many other topics—enlightens...or possibly confuses.

The Department of Sensitive Crimes is the first full-length novel in the Detective Varg series.

This kept a good pace, good descriptions, and great character development from "evil" to "good" and vice versa. Then again, that's what so good about this world - it's very difficult to pick one side completely because there's so much grey. No, I do not mean the Grey Wardens, I mean that moral stuff. There's a lot of very angry and very scared people in this book and they all react to it differently. It was great seeing more of the Mage and Circle debate fleshed out this way, because it's the backbones of all the games.

So, Cole is a character some people can't stand. I'd stand in front of a moving vehicle for him. His character is one of the most interesting ever created in the world, and I mean that sincerely. They don't just spoon feed you answers about him either, but they certainly give enough by the very end that I feel I know him so deeply that it makes me loves him even more. His relationship with Rhys here was so well done and tugged at my heart strings. I was aching to see their bond develop; two lost souls finding comfort and friendship while still having doubt and fear. Rhys is just the anchor Cole needed. Cole was the anchor and wakeup Evangeline needed. Look, I just want to hug Cole, okay? And Evangeline. And Rhys. Fuck it - big 'ol Dragon Age group hug as of right now.

If you're a Dragon Age fan or find Cole or the Chantry/Circle/Templar conflict at all intruiging - read this. If you've never been in the world I'd still say this is readable, but maybe have the Wiki on hand and know you're missing out on some Lore goodies. Speaking of, fuck yeah, Leliana!

<![CDATA[Queer Ducks (and Other Animals): The Natural World of Animal Sexuality]]> 58889121 This groundbreaking illustrated YA nonfiction title from two-time National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author Eliot Schrefer is a well-researched and teen-friendly exploration of the gamut of queer behaviors observed in animals.

A quiet revolution has been underway in recent years, with study after study revealing substantial same-sex sexual behavior in animals. Join celebrated author Eliot Schrefer on an exploration of queer behavior in the animal world--from albatrosses to bonobos to clownfish to doodlebugs.

In sharp and witty prose--aided by humorous comics from artist Jules Zuckerberg--Schrefer uses science, history, anthropology, and sociology to illustrate the diversity of sexual behavior in the animal world. Interviews with researchers in the field offer additional insights for readers and aspiring scientists.

Queer behavior in animals is as diverse and complex--and as natural--as it is in our own species. It doesn't set us apart from animals--it bonds us even closer to our animal selves.]]>

As the first female doctor in Newton-upon-Sea, she spends her days tending sick villagers in the practice she inherited from her father, with her loyal and sometimes overprotective dog, Zack, by her side.

After the corpse of village spiritualist Alvina Elwold is discovered aboveground at a church boneyard, wild rumors circulate through the charming seaside village, including one implicating a certain regal guest lodging nearby. Tales of the dead Alvina hobnobbing with spirits and hexing her enemies are even more outlandish—but as a woman of science and reason, Alexandra has no doubt that a murderer made of flesh and blood is on the loose.

Finding out the truth means sorting through a deluge of ghostly visitors, royal sightings, and shifty suspects. At least her attentive and handsome friend Nicholas Forsyth, Lord Dunsford, has come to her aid. Alexandra will need all the help she can get, because she’s stumbled upon dangerous secrets—while provoking a deadly adversary who wants to keep them buried.

Doctor Jasmine Marks is going back into hell.

The Hygrometric Dehabitation Region, or the “Zone, is a growing band of rainforest on the equator, where the heat and humidity make it impossible for warm-blooded animals to survive. A human being without protection in the Zone is dead in minutes.

Twenty years ago, Marks went into the rainforest with a group of researchers led by Doctor Elaine Fell, to study the extraordinary climate and see if it could be used in agriculture. The only thing she learned was that the Zone was no place for people. There were deaths, and the programme was cut short.

Now, they’re sending her back in. A plane crash, a rescue mission, a race against time and the environment to bring out the survivors. But there are things Marks’s corporate masters aren’t telling her. The Zone keeps its secrets, and so does Doctor Fell…]]>

<![CDATA[Beyond (The Founding of Valdemar, #1)]]> 56688207 The long-awaited founding of Valdemar comes to life in this new series from a New York Times bestselling author and beloved fantasist.

Within the Eastern Empire, Duke Kordas Valdemar rules a tiny, bucolic Duchy that focuses mostly on horse breeding. Anticipating the day when the Empire’s exploitative and militant leaders would not be content to leave them alone, Korda’s father set out to gather magicians in the hopes of one day finding a way to escape and protect the people of the Duchy from tyranny.

Kordas has lived his life looking over his shoulder. The signs in the Empire are increasingly dire. Under the direction of the Emperor, mages have begun to harness the power of dark magics, including blood magic, the powers of the Abyssal Planes, and the binding and "milking" of Elemental creatures.

But then one of the Duchy’s mages has a breakthrough. There is a way to place a Gate at a distance so far from the Empire that it is unlikely the Emperor can find or follow them as they evacuate everyone that is willing to leave.

But time is running out, and Kordas has been summoned to the Emperor's Court.

Can his reputation as a country bumpkin and his acting skills buy him and his people the time they need to flee? Or will the Emperor lose patience, invade to strip Valdemar of everything of worth, and send its conscripted people into the front lines of the Imperial wars?]]>

I liked both prominent perspectives, and I enjoyed how all the characters interacted. The evil Emperor was disconcertingly familiar to modern day politicians.

Kordas' approach to the problem was so thorough and kind of satisfying to see unfold. Watching him unable to resist helping every person who needed help regardless of how it destroyed his plans was endearing. His strategy of being perpetually unassuming was also very effective.

Delia definitely grew over the course of this book, and I appreciated that she was a bit resistant to leave her old life behind. That felt realistic, but I was proud of how she stretched herself. She didn't come across as whiney, just unsure and aware of how many things would change.

The LGBTQ+ rep and general good vibes were entirely unexpected and a wonderful surprise.

I listened to this on audiobook and the voice was so soothing and expressive and I'd definitely recommend it.

The dedication, I have to add, was beautiful; both the tribute to those affected by Covid and the theoretical damning to the soulless who took advantage of their power to exploit instead of aid. It put in perspective some elements of this book.

I'm so sad the sequel isn't out until later this year, but I'll be putting a hold on it as soon as my library lets me.]]>

Despite reading the genre almost exclusively, I now feel like I can finally call myself a fantasy fan having read a Mercedes Lackey novel. And, of course, it was fantastic. It's that wonderful high fantasy that's transportive. It had this immersive and relaxing cadence with a strong character driven narrative and big focus on world building. I understand I'm reading a prequel to the Valdemar books I've never read (of which there are dozens I think, wow) so now of course I'm curious about the rest of them.

Lukos Heat (Heart of Fire #1) 22877491
When the Lukos come upon them, Najlah is reluctantly intrigued. The Lukos, especially the one called Barkus, are nothing like the soft humans he spends most of his time around. They thrive in the brutal cold the way he thrives in volcanic fire. For the first time, it feels like Najlah may have found someone who can equal the fierceness of dragons, and see them as more than demons.

But if he hopes to explore the bond forming with the Lukos, he must first survive the enemy—and the Shide.]]>

I also love how the Lukos we meet, Barkos, is similar in his tendencies; action-oriented, dangerous, intelligent. He is slightly more human feeling than Najlah, but their dynamic is all wild strength and instinct and they work perfectly together despite the obvious differences between an Icy wolf shifter and a black firey dragon. The Bond made the dynamic even better, especially given it meant they could properly banter/communicate.

The world building that's done in such a short amount of time is absolutely incredible. There's no info-dumping, it's all integrated into the story and characters and I'm really, really impressed. The plot was interesting and didn't take on too much while still being very engaging and entertaining.

Overall I loved this. The sheer animalistic quality used to write Najlah' POV makes this memorable, but the excellent romance and the world are also so damn good and I'll definitely be rereading this.

July 5th Update: *mild spoilers for Book 2* Yeah, I 100% called it with the re-reading prediction. Devoured this again already. Still absolutely in love with how animalistic and feral Naj's characterization is and how well the romance and world-building is done. I'd pay good money for more of this series, though Tevra really isn't my favourite and I do prefer just Barkos/Naj. Nothing against poly, poly is great -I just don't really love Tevra's character as much. Anyway, I sense more re-reads of this beauty in my future.]]>

My favourite thing about this book is that I actually feel like I am inside the brain of a barely tamed apex predator. Our MC, Najlah, is a dragon: dangerous, arrogant, disdainful of humans and weakness, and a mind with very specific focuses (as he lays out - fire, fighting, fucking, food). He absolutely reads like a feral, calculating animal and I love how distinct the voice is. His "voice", I should mention, is mostly is the form of growls, grunts, hisses, rumbles, and body language. Again, very animalistic and yet very expressive.

I loved the feel that this book takes place in a special little pocket of peace, and I wanted to crawl through and live there too.

I'm being purposely vague here because it is so short and I worry about giving things away, but if you like books with gay romance, fantastical/supernatural creatures, themes of finding a place to call your own, lovely characters, a blindingly well-written sex scene and mysterious pasts that don't tend to leave - read this. Love, love, love.

I got about halfway through this when I realized that however long this book was, I'd want it to be 200 pages longer by the end of it. Lo and behold, I was right. I love everything about this. The ambiance, the characters, the romance, the internal dialogue, the different creatures, and of course, the beautifully detailed descriptions of nature and Drakjan's lake/river that evoked such a response that I yearned to go back up North, jump into a body of water, and swim until I was tired of swimming. During Covid, this books is the best I can get, but I'll gladly take it. I'd read the hell out of a sequel and then a sequel after that. I just want more of these characters, but unfortunately since this was written as part of a ŷ challenge thing, I doubt that's in the cards.

It was really nice to (re)read this book again. Because of my blessed brain damage, I completely forgot how this series went, but I just remembered reading it in and ADORING it. I'm not going to say it's at my level, it's definitely a read for a 7th grader, but it's just one of those books that have such a beautiful universe that you don't care about the difficulty level, and just enjoy getting lost somewhere else for a little while; y'know?

ANYWAYS. There are luckily 3 more books in this series, and then I believe it goes on with them as the teachers and finding students of their own to mentor. I'm not quite sure how I feel about that; I might just end up starting a new Tamora Pierce series with different characters and see what I think of that. So overall, great relaxing read for a rainy day :)]]>

There are mysteries that you can solve by being given details that are pieced together, and mysteries that no matter what you cannot solve until the author gives you a info dump . This book was, for the most part, the latter. I guessed half the mystery very early, which I never do, but the rest was revealed about 2/3 of the way through with a flashback chapter. It felt like the "you couldn't have guessed this" reveal of a Murder She Wrote without the Cabot Cove charm. Our enemy was devious and cruel, but we didn't have enough time to sympathize with the necessary party's plight and the whole thing felt almost unsatisfying because of how it was written.

I did like the character of Joké. She was very interesting. The concept of the Experimental Section was also a really cool concept. I also appreciated we got some Afrocentric themes from a Black author.

Overall, this was a miss for me. Do not recommend. Instead try Becky Chambers, who is a goddess with interesting science fiction and unique, exquisitely written characters. Thinking I might pick up another of hers after this experience.]]>

I was so excited for a closed room mystery in space, and ended up very disappointed. Bottle episodes are definitely my thing, but we spent so much time in the perspectives of people outside the bubble of the murder ship that it didn't even feel like that. I had a lot of problems with the writing style. The characters never felt real to me. I spent a lot of the book confused, and not in a fun mysterious way. The multiple perspectives were jarring and often prevented me from getting into a good flow, especially the last third. The last third was a mess in general, spending little time with our protagonists and jumping around in a scattered fashion, changing perspectives just as a climax crests which completely ruined the flow/suspense. The ending was fine. I mostly happy to be done with it.

Blood, devil magic, violence. A take-no-prisoners team of Caiman, an amnesiac cursed lizard man impervious to magic, and Nikaido, a caring but deadly badass female cook/restaurant owner tracking down answers and killing evil shit in graphic ways. A novice sorcerer trying to finally make his name amongst some thoroughly more experienced characters, naturally by killing aforementioned cursed lizard man. A powerful sorcerer pulling the strings. A casually vicious body count. Excellent dark humour. for treason

The king of Yusan must die.

The five most dangerous liars in the land have been mysteriously summoned to work together for a single objective: to kill the God King Joon.

He has it coming. Under his merciless immortal hand, the nobles flourish, while the poor and innocent are imprisoned, ruined…or sold.

And now each of the five blades will come for him. Each has tasted bitterness―from the hired hitman seeking atonement, a lovely assassin who seeks freedom, or even the prince banished for his cruel crimes. None can resist the sweet, icy lure of vengeance.

They can agree on murder.

They can agree on treachery.

But for these five killers―each versed in deception, lies, and betrayal―it’s not enough to forge an alliance. To survive, they’ll have to find a way to trust each other…but only one can take the crown.

Let the best liar win.]]>

Got 250+ pages into this and it was good, but apparently there's a romance that seriously develops between Haruka and Mamoru and that age gap makes me more than a tad uncomfortable. I dunno. I'm a bit oversensitive to that so I'm cutting my losses now; there are too many other books to conquer on my TBR that aren't problematic for me to push through another slightly uncomfortable 250 pages.

They told 20-year-old Charlie O’Malley that they had a cure for the rare blood condition that would eventually kill her–an untested, experimental cure. All they wanted in return was for her to join their elite military team and train to kill the Undead.

She took the deal, not because she cared so much about extending her life, but because it would make her strong–stronger than ordinary humans. Strong enough to kill the vampire who’d pretended to love her, taken her blood, used her body, and murdered her mother.

Killion was the last of his kind, or so he thought. When he found Charlie, he felt the pull. She had the rare Belladonna Antigen all vampires had as humans. Vampires were compelled to protect those rare mortals they called The Chosen. But with Charlie, the bond was different, more powerful than anything he’s felt before, and impossible to resist, even though surrendering to it will probably get him killed.

Ancient vampire elders Rhiannon and Roland come out of exile, risking their lives to help their mortal friend Roxy reclaim her granddaughter. But before the tale ends, their lives will be forever changed.

Join Maggie Shayne as she returns to her most beloved series of all time with this new beginning.

<![CDATA[Alone Against the North: An Expedition into the Unknown]]> 24876658 Canada's real-life Indiana Jones reminds us that the age of exploration is not over

When Adam Shoalts ventured into the largest unexplored wilderness on the planet, he hoped to set foot where no one had ever gone before. What he discovered surprised even him, and made him a media sensation.

Shoalts was no stranger to the wilderness. He had hacked his way through jungles and muskeg, had stared down polar bears and climbed mountains. But one spot on the map called out to him irresistibly: the Hudson Bay Lowlands, a trackless waste of muskeg and lonely rivers, moose and wolf, much bigger than the Amazon. Little of it has ever been explored.

Cutting through this forbidding landscape is a river no hunter, no explorer, no Native guide has left any record of paddling. It is far from any important waterways, even further from any arable land, and about as far from civilization as one can get. It was this river that Shoalts was obsessively determined to explore.

It took him several attempts, years of research, and two friendships that collapsed under the strain of Adam's single-minded thirst to explore this river. But finally, alone, he found the headwaters of the Again. He believed he had discovered what he had set out to find. But the adventure had just begun.

Paddling his way back to Hudson Bay, where a float plane would pick him up, Shoalts discovered something that seemingly shouldn't exist: a towering unmapped waterfall. He also discovered edenic islands, and braved rock-strewn rapids, but the waterfall captured both his imagination and the world's.

Adam did a single interview, with The Guardian, and once the story hit, he was a celebrity. He appeared on morning TV and was made the Explorer in Residence of the Canadian Geographic Society. What struck a chord with people was the realization that the world is bigger than we think. We assume that because we have mapped it from space, it must be exhaustively known. But it is wilder, stranger, less homogenous than we assume. We hardly know it. And, contrary to popular wisdom, it is certainly not flat. In other words, the age of exploration is not over.]]>

Diana's life was in a rut -- she hated her job, she was perpetually single, and she needed a place to live. But then the perfect apartment came along. It seemed too good to be true -- because it was.

The apartment was already inhabited -- by monsters. Vom the Hungering was the first to greet Diana and to warn her that his sole purpose in life was to eat everything in his path. This poses a problem for Diana since she's in his path. . .and is forbidden from ever leaving the apartment.

It turns out though that there are older and more ancient monstrous entities afoot -- ones who want to devour the moon and destroy the world as we know it. Can Diana, Vom, and the other horrors stop this from happening? Maybe if they can get Vom to stop eating everything. . .and everyone.]]>

Anyway, onto the book. Dangle is great. I knew that from years of following him. I loved that he got to read his own audiobook because I'm so used to hearing his voice it would've been weird as hell hearing it from someone else. It was great learning more about his life and how he got to where he is. I also knew the basics about his sister, but learning about Rachel really gave me a better understanding not only of what fuels his love of making people laugh, but also gave a greater depth to how much he truly loves and understands the benefit of his charity work. Me being me, I also enjoyed the constant references to Scarborough, downtown Toronto, the GO train, and the GTA/Canada in general. I keep forgetting that this guy grew up a 25 minute bus ride from my house. Absolutely wild.

Steve is a storyteller. This is something I also knew already, but he spend a lot of time in this book NOT talking about hockey and I didn't even care because it's fun to listen to him go off. He's got some amazing yarns to tell, too, along with some absolutely cringe-worthy decisions that he 100% owns.

Also, I've gotta say that I respect his honesty in regards to the anxiety and crying he's dealt with. It's hard for anyone to admit things, but for a man whose life and face is broadcast internationally, I think it's a different kind of courage to say "yeah, I want that out there forever for anyone to ask me about or take shots at". Absolutely shatter that stigma. Good for him.

This is one of those pleasant reads where you learn more about someone you thought you liked and walk away liking them even more. If you already watch Steve Dangle, absolutely pick this up. If you're a Leafs fan or hockey fan in general, you'll probably enjoy this too. At the end of the day, it's a story of a guy being able to live out his childhood dreams and never taking it for granted. I hope we've got decades more rants to come because I will be listening. Really though, I think we all just wanna watch the aftereffects when the Leafs finally hoist that shiny hunk of metal and Steve gets to finally cross the big one off his Bucket List. How fitting is it that I finish this book on the day the Leafs fuck us over one more time? Yeah, Game 7, assholes; this looks familiar, eh? And yet, here I am the day after, still wearing my Leafs cap on my head to show my loyalty and my black hoodie on to symbolize the necessary mourning. I have not taken down our Leafs sign in the window. Why? Well, first off, I'm categorically insane. Gotta be to survive this franchise, folks. Second, the title from Dangle says it all. I still love 'em and still believe, and still hope that when the Leafs do win this thing it'll be while I'm still sucking in air.

Overall, it's just such a bleak, enormous concept removed from pretty much any other storyline in the DC Verse, so it's a great 'why the hell not' kinda read to pick up, even if fangs aren't really your thing.

Jason Todd, a.k.a. Redd Hood, has been many things--a Robin, dead, the Red Hood--now he's back and he's embracing his bad side!

With his new status as a villain, Red Hood plans to take down Gotham's underworld from the inside. Joined by a fallen Amazon named Artemis and a half-baked Superman clone named Bizarro, this dark trinity will soon discover that the line between hero and villain is harder to discern than they might think.

For someone who adores Jason Todd, I reaaallyyy put this off. No longer. This had chaotic tactical decisions, cutting sarcasm, unlikely alliances, so many guns, morally grey themes, and emotional heart to hearts with Batman over greasy burgers - like, what else do you want, people?

I love how Jason was written here, still reckless and angry and impulsive, but intelligent and complex. Dude's got baggage for days and even more bitterness, but he's still a student of Bruce. He cares about people and wants justice. He plans and researches and executes. Well, he attempts to, anyway. He has good instincts and trusts them. He's good at what he does and it's really fun to watch.

As soon as the Toronto Public Library gets themselves together (I'm on my knees begging to the Book Gods and contemplating attempting blood sacrifice, god DAMN, ransomware attack) - I'm getting volume 2. And volume 3. Fuck it, I might just buy the next one because if it's Red Hood being Red Hood, y'know it's gonna be worth it.]]>

<![CDATA[Beyond the Trees: A Journey Alone Across Canada's Arctic]]> 43671672 National bestseller

A thrilling odyssey through an unforgiving landscape, from "Canada's greatest living explorer."

In the spring of 2017, Adam Shoalts, bestselling author and adventurer, set off on an unprecedented solo journey across North America's greatest wilderness. A place where, in our increasingly interconnected, digital world, it's still possible to wander for months without crossing a single road, or even see another human being.

Between his starting point in Eagle Plains, Yukon Territory, to his destination in Baker Lake, Nunavut, lies a maze of obstacles: shifting ice floes, swollen rivers, fog-bound lakes, and gale-force storms. And Shoalts must time his departure by the breakup of the spring ice, then sprint across nearly 4,000 kilometers of rugged, wild terrain to arrive before winter closes in.

He travels alone up raging rivers that only the most expert white-water canoeists dare travel even downstream. He must portage across fields of jagged rocks that stretch to the horizon, and navigate labyrinths of swamps, tormented by clouds of mosquitoes every step of the way. And the race against the calendar means that he cannot afford the luxuries of rest, or of making mistakes. Shoalts must trek tirelessly, well into the endless Arctic summer nights, at times not even pausing to eat.

But his reward is the adventure of a lifetime.

Heart-stopping, wonder-filled, and attentive to the majesty of the natural world, Beyond the Trees captures the ache for adventure that afflicts us all.]]>

<![CDATA[The Whisper on the Night Wind: The True History of a Wilderness Legend]]> 56622108
Spellbinding adventure from Canada's most beloved modern-day explorer.

Traverspine is not a place you will find on most maps. A century ago, it stood near the foothills of the remote Mealy Mountains in central Labrador. Today it is an abandoned ghost town, almost all trace of it swallowed up by dark spruce woods that cloak millions of acres.

In the early 1900s, this isolated little settlement was the scene of an extraordinary haunting by large creatures none could identify. Strange tracks were found in the woods. Unearthly cries were heard in the night. Sled dogs went missing. Children reported being stalked by a terrifying grinning animal. Families slept with cabin doors barred and axes and guns at their bedsides.

Tales of things that "go bump in the night" are part of the folklore of the wilderness, told and retold around countless campfires down through the ages. Most are easily dismissed by skeptics. But what happened at Traverspine a hundred years ago was different. The eye-witness accounts were detailed, and those who reported them included no less than three medical doctors and a wildlife biologist.

Something really did emerge from the wilderness to haunt the little settlement of Traverspine. Adam Shoalts, decorated modern-day explorer and an expert on wilderness folklore, picks up the trail from a century ago and sets off into the Labrador wild to investigate the tale. It is a spine-tingling adventure, straight from a land steeped in legends and lore, where Vikings wandered a thousand years ago and wolves and bears still roam free.

In delving into the dark corners of Canada's wild, The Whisper on the Night Wind combines folklore, history, and adventure into a fascinating saga of exploration.]]>

<![CDATA[A Botanist's Guide to Parties and Poisons (Saffron Everleigh Mystery, #1)]]> 58202849
Debut author Kate Khavari deftly entwines a pulse-pounding mystery with the struggles of a woman in a male-dominated field in 1923 London.

Newly minted research assistant Saffron Everleigh is determined to blaze a new trail at the University College London, but with her colleagues beliefs about women’s academic inabilities and not-so-subtle hints that her deceased father’s reputation paved her way into the botany department, she feels stymied at every turn.

When she attends a dinner party for the school, she expects to engage in conversations about the university's large expedition to the Amazon. What she doesn’t expect is for Mrs. Henry, one of the professors wives, to drop to the floor, poisoned by an unknown toxin.

Dr. Maxwell, Saffron’s mentor, is the main suspect and evidence quickly mounts. Joined by fellow researcher--and potential romantic interest--Alexander Ashton, Saffron uses her knowledge of botany as she explores steamy greenhouses, dark gardens, and deadly poisons to clear Maxwell's name.

Will she be able to uncover the truth, or will her investigation land her on the murderer’s list, in this entertaining examination of society’s expectations?]]>

I love when an author introduces a character at the beginning of the book and then slowly, over the course of the book, starts entirely contradicting everything we've been told about said character. Hey, at least this way we get to see what the author intended and what might've been. Frankly, I much prefer the version of Miss Everly we DIDN'T get to know. The first couple of chapters I was very happy to get to know the strong, intelligent, logical scholar who hated gossip and would never insult herself by flirting or using her gender to gain ground. She wanted to be with her plants and contribute to science and prove herself while wryly commenting on others around her and bantering with Alexander. And then as things progressed I just grew to hate her. She's dimwitted, impulsive, illogical, rude, and not even in a quirky funny way. It's just irritating. Then she starts making enormous illogical decisions and gossiping and flirting with men to get information - which isn't a general deal breaker by any means, I'm not clutching any fucking pearls - but it goes against who she was introduced as. Honestly, being in her brain is annoying because she has such rash, stupid thoughts, ugh. She makes so many assumptions, like what the Inspector's thinking and doing, or possible social connections. She becomes increasingly full of herself and obnoxious. She asks inappropriately personal questions of Alexander. She thinks lipstick and a different hairstyle is an actual disguise from people who fucking interviewed her face to face a day prior (and it WORKS). She doesn't act at all intelligently, and it's simply not fun watching her screw up or get things right. I just wanted her to do something that made sense. Ultimately I decided to focus on the mystery instead of her in an effort to get through the book.

The mystery, sadly, isn't written particularly well either. Things don't make sense (and I don't just mean her theories). You know it's not good when you start siding and sympathizing with the cops that are supposed to be incompetent or evil or the enemy or whatever. Seriously, I'd be supremely pissed off if I was the Inspector dealing with Saffron or Elizabeth and frankly his patience is impressive. Saffron ended up looking like the crazy one here, and at one point I wondered if that was the intent but I don't think so. I think she was supposed to be an intelligent heroine - which, maybe she is sometimes, but it was not shown here. Seriously, what idiot thinks she can poison herself, make her own notes while no independent third party is observing, and then present it to the police as damning irrefutable evidence? She could've just written that up whenever she felt like like it and, I dunno, LIED?! It made no sense and pissed me off when she kept patting herself on the back for doing on and surely being the reason Maxwell was released from jail.

The romance was never gonna work because I can't vote for any relationship to work if she's one half of it, and frankly I like Alexander too much to encourage him to be with her. I was relieved there wasn't any 'I love yous', which I fully expected, though trying to kiss in hospital after both of them puked up their guts repeatedly wasn't exactly romantic. Either of them brush their teeth in that time? Sorry, I know, buzzkill. The garden scene was a much better venue if nothing else.

Whatever with this one. Was so glad to see the end of it and hopefully better things (and more intelligent and likeable characters) are on the way.]]>

A quick spoiler here, but that last liberation of the sex bot and then letting it go out on its own felt borderline cruel. That poor bot doesn't have the security instincts a Sec Unit has and it's gonna be utterly lost and confused untethered without an ally. I don't believe it was at all out of character for Murderbot to do and I'm glad it was free, but damn.

More than anything else though, the humour is just perfection. It's dry, sarcastic, and keeps the whole tone of the book uniquely dramatic and tense while simultaneously giving the vibe of Murderbot being utterly bored and exasperated with the stupidity of the human race. It's fucking awesome.

I read this on audiobook as well and I highly recommend it. That said, I recommend this whole series. They're short and fantastic and I'll definitely be continuing on.]]>

I love how these are written. Things always go wrong, there's a great mix of action and character development, and watching Murderbot grow and transform is really heart wrenching. I love how it's mind kept going back to Mensa even though it ran from it's clients in the first place. Those humans really do mean a lot to it, but I respect the need to go out of its own and live without commands for awhile, even though I'm desperate for reunion. Also, the addition of ART was wonderful and I was so sad to say goodbye to it. It was instrumental not only in the mission and Murderbot's survival, but its development. The callback to the mine disaster made sense as well and I thought it was handled well, the resolution not feeling like it fixed everything.

This was just a lot of fun. Good art, entertaining plot with twists and turns, and did I mention actual, manipulative vampires trying to take over the Justice League and the entire world? Oliver's dialogue was dry and hilarious as per usual, everyone seemed in character, plenty of good fights and mind games, and of course I loved seeing all of the Bat Family present from Cass to Alfred to Jason (featuring Babs/Dick banter, even!).

Overall, this is just an easy and well executed event to drop into and enjoy without a spreadsheet of what you need to read first. Good re-read potential too due to a last minute bomb dropped in the final pages. Go get it.

Johannes, a free dog, lives in an urban park by the sea. His job is to be the Eyes—to see everything that happens within the park and report back to the park’s elders, three ancient Bison. His friends—a seagull, a raccoon, a squirrel, and a pelican—work with him as the Assistant Eyes, observing the humans and other animals who share the park and making sure the Equilibrium is in balance.

But changes are afoot. More humans, including Trouble Travelers, arrive in the park. A new building, containing mysterious and hypnotic rectangles, goes up. And then there are the goats—an actual boatload of goats—who appear, along with a shocking revelation that changes Johannes’s view of the world.]]>

<![CDATA[The Curse of Penryth Hall (Ruby Vaughn, #1)]]> 65213227 An atmospheric gothic mystery that beautifully brings the ancient Cornish countryside to life, Armstrong introduces heroine Ruby Vaughn in her Minotaur Books & Mystery Writers of America First Crime Novel Award-winning debut, The Curse of Penryth Hall.

After the Great War, American heiress Ruby Vaughn made a life for herself running a rare bookstore alongside her octogenarian employer and house mate in Exeter. She’s always avoided dwelling on the past, even before the war, but it always has a way of finding her. When Ruby is forced to deliver a box of books to a folk healer living deep in the Cornish countryside, she is brought back to the one place she swore she’d never return. A more sensible soul would have delivered the package and left without rehashing old wounds. But no one has ever accused Ruby of being sensible. Thus begins her visit to Penryth Hall.

A foreboding fortress, Penryth Hall is home to Ruby’s once dearest friend, Tamsyn, and her husband, Sir Edward Chenowyth. It’s an unsettling place, and after a more unsettling evening, Ruby is eager to depart. But her plans change when Penryth’s bells ring for the first time in thirty years. Edward is dead; he met a gruesome end in the orchard, and with his death brings whispers of a returned curse. It also brings Ruan Kivell, the person whose books brought her to Cornwall, the one the locals call a Pellar, the man they believe can break the curse. Ruby doesn’t believe in curses—or Pellars—but this is Cornwall and to these villagers the curse is anything but lore, and they believe it will soon claim its next victim: Tamsyn.

To protect her friend, Ruby must work alongside the Pellar to find out what really happened in the orchard that night.]]>

I desperately wish the characters were real, because they felt that way. I loved watching them interact, especially Ty and Hal. They had one of the best written relationships with platonic love and unending trust and I adored it. Ty was Hal's commanding officer and it was hard for Hal (considering the circumstances) to turn that off, but they handled the power levels so well. They had a friendship and brotherhood that ran so deep, understanding each other and what was needed and it worked for them expeptionally. I love how supportive and protective Ty remained without being condescending or controlling, and how Hal always listened to Ty - even when it was hard to hear - but was always encouraged to for himself. They're always there for each other without question; family.

I'm a sucker for found family and this did it so well, adding to the family even when I didn't expect it. There was a lot of focus on the characters, which I appreciate in a book, and I'd happily read 100 more pages of them just going about their daily life on the Loshad.

The romance with Hal and Vivi did develop relatively quickly, but it was so sweet I didn't care much. And, crucially, it wasn't instalove dropping the four letter word immediately. They had their bumps but I liked that they always talked and were patient with each other.

Hal in particular had my heart. I loved his portectiveness, his desire to serve while still being his own person, his struggles to balance himself and his instincts. He came so far over the course of this book and I'm ridiculously proud.

I got pretty attached to the side characters we met along the way too, those in the resistance. I was surprised at how much I feared for their safety towards the end when the firefight started. I also loved that we got disability rep with Orin, who is deaf and mute.

The world felt real and expansive and interesting, the AI elements were fascinating, and the involvement with ACAS and the war made me furious. What they did to vats was despicable and terrifyingly believable. The vats provided so many interesting storylines and questions from morality or their lifespan or how they can integrate into normal life again. There were a lot of parallels to our own soldiers who are forgotten after their service is complete. The fact that the author's father fought in Vietnam adds another layer for me.

I found there's a sequel and I'm beside myself. I need more of these characters, just to see how they're doing and watch them interact again.

I love these characters, I loved this reading experience, and I love this book. It gave me The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet vibes, which is a hell of a compliment from me. I'll be turning everything over that I read for a long time and I can't wait for more.]]>

In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety.

But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern.

On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot. Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is.

<![CDATA[I Never Met a Rattlesnake I Didn’t Like: a Memoir]]> 61868522
The stories that fuel the essays in this entertaining memoir are as diverse as the animals—and insects!—at the heart of Carpenter’s inquiry. As a young man, Carpenter is working in Jasper National Park, and he’s lugging his banjo—hustling on his way to a paid gig—when he takes a short cut through the woods, makes a wrong turn and ends up at the dump. He looks across at some large animals. Horses? No, five, count ‘em, five grizzlies. Luckily a ranger on an actual horse leads him out of danger. He’s fishing for brook trout in the mountains with a friend, cooling their catch in a convenient snow bank. But the fish keep disappearing. He finds them cached under a nearby rock, and when he tries to pull one out, he’s in a tug-of-war with some hidden creature, small but fierce—is it a mink?

Encounters like these drive the author into philosophical conjecture, into reading everything he can get his hands on about these and other creatures as he contemplates our place in the wild, and the value of the wild in our lives. These essays are essential reading for those of us who share David Carpenter’s fascination with the predators that so fundamentally shape our understanding of wilderness and the necessity to preserve it.]]>

Bad Cree 60839741 In this gripping debut tinged with supernatural horror, a young Cree woman's dreams lead her on a perilous journey of self-discovery that ultimately forces her to confront the toll of a legacy of violence on her family, her community and the land they call home.

When Mackenzie wakes up with a severed crow's head in her hands, she panics. Only moments earlier she had been fending off masses of birds in a snow-covered forest. In bed, when she blinks, the head disappears.

Night after night, Mackenzie's dreams return her to a memory from before her sister Sabrina's untimely death: a weekend at the family's lakefront campsite, long obscured by a fog of guilt. But when the waking world starts closing in, too--a murder of crows stalks her every move around the city, she wakes up from a dream of drowning throwing up water, and gets threatening text messages from someone claiming to be Sabrina--Mackenzie knows this is more than she can handle alone.

Traveling north to her rural hometown in Alberta, she finds her family still steeped in the same grief that she ran away to Vancouver to escape. They welcome her back, but their shaky reunion only seems to intensify her dreams--and make them more dangerous.

What really happened that night at the lake, and what did it have to do with Sabrina's death? Only a bad Cree would put their family at risk, but what if whatever has been calling Mackenzie home was already inside?]]>

Two decades have passed since an inferno swept through Elmbridge High, claiming the lives of three teenagers and causing one student, Carly Johnson, to disappear. The main suspect: Kaitlyn, "the girl of nowhere."

Kaitlyn's diary, discovered in the ruins of Elmbridge High, reveals the thoughts of a disturbed mind. The Peculiarities 57067179 From popular historical alternate history author David Liss (A Conspiracy of Paper) comes the tale of a clueless young man embroiled in a deadly supernatural mystery in London. Rooted in strange conspiracies and secret societies, this absurdist comedic romp combines strange bedfellows with murderous creatures, resulting in an unexpectedly delightful consequences.

All of his life, Thomas Thresher has been free of obligation and responsibility, but that is over now. He is a twenty-three-year-old man whose best days are behind him. Thomas's older brother Walter has trapped him in a tedious clerical job at the family bank in London, and Thomas is expected to wed a wealthy young woman in whom he has no interest.

But Thomas has more serious problems than those of a disaffected young man. There are irregularities at the bank he cannot explain. His childhood friend has mysteriously turned up dead. Worse, a verdant skin malady has infected him: leaves have begun sprouting on his skin. Thomas must conclude that it is due to the long-rumored Peculiarities. London's famous grey fog has been concealing a rash of unnatural afflictions--and worse, the murderous Elegants.

As Thomas grows leafier, the conspiracies surrounding him become more apparent. He cannot determine whom to trust: his own family; his banking co-workers and superiors; the beautiful widow of his companion; the woman he is to marry. Or perhaps a lycanthropic medium; the members of a secret occult society...or even Aleister Crowley.]]>
336 David Liss 1616963581 Nico 4 fantasy, historical 3.5 stars

Watching Thomas turn into less of a mysogistic doormat and more into a sometimes-misguided but genuinely trying man who's developing a backbone - was nice. Rewarding, even. He still needs work, but hey, progress is progress! I was very, very proud of him when he stood up to Walter the first time and then every time after that that. He remained however, pretty damn stupid. Critical thinking is NOT this guy's forte and I lost count of how many times I put my head in my hands when he was being dense or incredibly gullible or stubborn or close minded or-
You get the picture. He improved, and if he'd jumped from being that guy to perfect over the course of imthis book it would've been horrendously unrealistic. But he learned. He made mistakes, and he genuinely tried to be better and be different. I appreciate that he'd spent his whole life being one thing and now he was rewriting himself. I relate to that. It's scary as hell, so I respect the effort. But much like my own life, I cringed a lot.

What happened to our main villains was somewhat unsatisfying for me. Every hated someone so much you what them to die so you can hear the smug, sanctimoniousness bullshit slowly fade from their mouth as they perish? Mr. Hawk, everyone! Walter too, but Mr. Hawk just... Kill that bastard. And both of them basically got... Nothing? Jail time. Maybe. Walter was scared for two seconds and Mr. Hawk was disappointed. Not enough for me. Felt very wishy washy and like the author's planning on a sequel (though I see no planned sequel on GR so idk). I had a lot of questions about Mr. Hawk too, like, y'know the whole suckling on rabbits? Did I miss the explanation for that shit? I feel like I must've but I listened to this on audiobook and it's really hard to skip back find where.

I loved the characters here, especially how I had a hard time figuring out peoples' genuine motivations, which made things interesting as Thomas stumbled his way through. Ruby and her Mom are the best, though. Ester was also an interesting character, and Crowley kept me guessing for a while before I decided I liked him. I think. What a damn wild card of a man.

The pacing was reasonably good, but then we got a lot of revelations all at once at the end with like six reverse UNO cards thrown in for spice. I'll not complain though, because the Father reveal wasn't actually something I'd worked out so I enjoyed that.

I also cannot believe I'm complaining about this, but Sarah will appreciate it: for a book that talked about math magic and generally had math as the entire backbone - there's very little actual mathematical theory. I'm assuming this was done to not alienate readers like me, who know absolutely shit all about the finer points of calculus or financial formulas, but it was like reading a biologist describe a peacock as very shiny and colourful with lots of feathers and two eyes, y'know? You kind of expect an expert to spit out more jargon. The language was abstract when it talked about formulas and equations and the most actual math talk we get is talking about solving for the Omega Arlef or "zeroing" it. Again, I'm not complaining that the author made this accessible for me, but if you're a math person expect nerdy math stuff, you're probably gonna be disappointed.

Anyway, fuck math, back to the rest of it. I enjoyed this. It's not a favourite or anything, but it absolutely held my attention and I was invested in Thomas and the Peculiarities. That man was put through so much shit and it was satisfying to watch him decide to fight back and find a purpose. There were some fucked up descriptions of mildly disturbing magical shit (this is a selling point) and the narration was so incredibly droll and British. The villains were despicable and the allies wonderful. Good read.]]>

Good read.

<![CDATA[Terrible Lizard: A Memoir of My Time in the Police Dinosaur Unit]]> 51058119
Or so Oak Jones thought. He’s wanted on the Police Dinosaur Unit all his life. Now that he’s in, he’s discovered that training a raptor is a lot harder than he ever imagined. And if he thought training would be difficult, living with one is a whole new level of weird. Banshee can clear a six-foot fence like it was nothing, and he has a love for eating the neighborhood cats, which is putting Oak on the outs with his next-door neighbor, Christy Dao.

But there is a reason for everything, and when Oak discovers why Banshee struggles, it breaks his heart.

Terrible Lizard is a funny and endearing look at life with Banshee, a great working dinosaur, but one terrible lizard.

Officer Hendricks sat at the temporary desk for training leads. He was without his sunglasses for the first time ever. His bright blue eyes burned with intensity.
“I wanted to talk to you about Banshee, he said.
“I know it was rough yesterday, I said, “but we’ve made good progress.
“You have, and it’s to be commended. You are the best handler here. But it’s a team effort, Oak. I called you in because I wanted you to be the first to hear that I intend to fail Banshee.
“What? No. There’s still two weeks left.
“Less than two weeks left. And this isn’t the kind of thing that gets fixed in less than two weeks.
“Give me a chance.
“Oak, you will be returned to your station until I can place you in Violent Offenders. Renato has given you a great review, and the captain there can’t wait to have you. Next year, you can re-apply. I cannot guarantee you that you will be accepted, but based on what I’ve seen over the past four weeks, I like your chances. You will definitely have my vote.
Officer Hendricks extended his hand to me, and I shook my head. “No. I refuse. Give me two weeks.
The open hand pinched Officer Hendricks nostrils. “You are not the first officer to work with Banshee. This was his third time in the course. Three strikes, and the raptor is gone.
“So that’s it? There’s nothing more that can be done?
“Not in my experience, Oak. I’m sorry.”]]>
