Moving back and forth from Poland to Rego Park, New York, Maus tells two powerful stories: the first is Spiegelman's father's account of how he and his wife survived Hitler's Europe, a harrowing tale filled with countless brushes with death, improbable escapes, and the terror of confinement and betrayal. The second is the author's tortured relationship with his aging father as they try to lead a normal life of minor arguments and passing visits against a backdrop of history too large to pacify. At all levels, this is the ultimate survivor's tale - and that, too, of the children who somehow survive even the survivors.

Part I of Maus takes Spiegelman's parents to the gates of Auschwitz and him to the edge of despair. Put aside all your preconceptions. These cats and mice are not Tom and Jerry, but something quite different. This is a new kind of literature.]]>

The Complete Persepolis 991197
Persepolis is the story of Satrapi's unforgettable childhood and coming of age within a large and loving family in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution; of the contradictions between private and public life in a country plagued by political upheaval; of her high school years in Vienna facing the trials of adolescence far from her family; of her homecoming—both sweet and terrible; and, finally, of her self-imposed exile from her beloved homeland. It is the chronicle of a girlhood and adolescence at once outrageous and familiar, a young life entwined with the history of her country yet filled with the universal trials and joys of growing up.

Edgy, searingly observant, and candid, often heartbreaking but threaded throughout with raw humor and hard-earned wisdomPersepolis is a stunning work from one of the most highly regarded, singularly talented graphic artists at work today.]]>

It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing - not even a smear of blood - to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. Perfect Little World 30107561
So when Dr. Grind offers her a space in The Infinite Family Project, she accepts. Housed in a spacious compound in Tennessee, she joins nine other couples, all with children the same age as her newborn son, to raise their children as one extended family. Grind's theory is that the more parental love a child receives, the better off they are.

This attempt at a utopian ideal-funded by an eccentric billionaire-starts off promising: Izzy enjoys the kids, reading to them and teaching them to cook. She even forms a bond with her son more meaningful than she ever expected. But soon the gentle equilibrium among the families is upset and it all starts to disintegrate: unspoken resentments between the couples begin to fester; the project's funding becomes tenuous; and Izzy's feelings for Dr. Grind, who is looking to expunge his own painful childhood, make her question her participation in this strange experiment in the first place.

Written with the same compassionate voice, disarming sense of humor, and quirky charm that madeThe Family Fangsuch a success, Perfect Little World is a poignant look at how the best families are the ones we make for ourselves.]]>

I feel like this story worked way too hard to be “literary and missed out on many opportunities to be more entertaining. The author seemed to be trying to make a point, or something, with the excessive run-on sentences when in Izzy’s perspective. Also, why did he keep flip-flopping from referring to the Dr. as Dr. Grinder and Preston? Very off-putting, even if it was on purpose to show detachment from his real self, or whatever.

Obit 53029244 Obit, Chang writes of "the way memory gets up after someone has died and starts walking." These poems reinvent the form of newspaper obituary to both name what has died ("civility," "language," "the future," "Mother's blue dress") and the cultural impact of death on the living. Whereas elegy attempts to immortalize the dead, an obituary expresses loss, and the love for the dead becomes a conduit for self-expression. <![CDATA[Slow Noodles: A Cambodian Memoir of Love, Loss, and Family Recipes]]> 173404032 Slow Noodles will resonate with readers who loved the food and emotional truth of Michelle Zauner'sCrying in H Mart, and it has the staying power of Loung Ung's First They Killed My Father.

Take a well-fed nine-year-old with a big family and a fancy education. Fold in 2 revolutions, 2 civil wars, and one wholesale extermination. Subtract a reliable source of food, life savings, and family members, until all are gone. Shave down childhood dreams for approximately two decades, until only subsistence remains.

In Slow Noodles, Chantha Nguon recounts her life as a Cambodia refugee who lost everything and everyone—her house, her country, her parents, her siblings, her friends—everything but the memories of her mother’s kitchen, the tastes and aromas of the foods her mother made before the dictator Pol Pot tore her country apart in the 1970s, killing millions of her compatriots. Nguon’s irrepressible spirit and determination come through in this emotional and poignantbut also lyrical and magical memoir that includes over 20 recipes for Khmer dishes like chicken lime soup, banh sung noodles, pâté de foie, curries, spring rolls, and stir-fries. For Nguon, recreating these dishes becomes an act of resistance, of reclaiming her place in the world, of upholding the values the Khmer Rouge sought to destroy, and of honoring the memory of her beloved mother.

From her idyllic early years in Battambang to hiding as a young girl in Phnom Penh as the country purges ethnic Vietnamese like Nguon and her family, from her escape to Saigon to the deaths of mother and sister there, from the poverty and devastation she experiences in a war-ravaged Vietnam to her decision to flee the country. We follow Chantha on a harrowing river crossing into Thailand—part of the exodus that gave rise to the name “boat people”—and her decades in a refugee camp there, until finally, denied passage to the West, she returns to a forever changed Cambodia. Nguon survives by cooking in a brothel, serving drinks in a nightclub, making and selling street food, becoming a suture-nurse treating refugees abused by Thai authorities, and weaving silk. Through it all, Nguonrelies on her mother’s “slow noodles approach to healing and to cooking, one that prioritizes time and care over expediency.Haunting and evocative, Slow Noodles is a testament to the power of culinary heritage to spark the rebirth of a young woman’s hopes for a beautiful life.]]>

Apples Never Fall 56143578 #1 New York Times Bestseller
A Peacock Original TV Series–Streaming Soon

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Liane Moriarty comes a novel that looks at marriage, siblings, and how the people we love the most can hurt us the deepest

The Delaney family love one another dearly—it’s just that sometimes they want to murder each other . . .

If your mother was missing, would you tell the police? Even if the most obvious suspect was your father?

This is the dilemma facing the four grown Delaney siblings.

The Delaneys are fixtures in their community. The parents, Stan and Joy, are the envy of all of their friends. They’re killers on the tennis court, and off it their chemistry is palpable. But after fifty years of marriage, they’ve finally sold their famed tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives. So why are Stan and Joy so miserable?

The four Delaney children—Amy, Logan, Troy, and Brooke—were tennis stars in their own right, yet as their father will tell you, none of them had what it took to go all the way. But that’s okay, now that they’re all successful grown-ups and there is the wonderful possibility of grandchildren on the horizon.

One night a stranger named Savannah knocks on Stan and Joy’s door, bleeding after a fight with her boyfriend. The Delaneys are more than happy to give her the small kindness she sorely needs. If only that was all she wanted.

Later, when Joy goes missing, and Savannah is nowhere to be found, the police question the one person who remains: Stan. But for someone who claims to be innocent, he, like many spouses, seems to have a lot to hide. Two of the Delaney children think their father is innocent, two are not so sure—but as the two sides square off against each other in perhaps their biggest match ever, all of the Delaneys will start to reexamine their shared family history in a very new light.]]>

Happy Hour 59448263
Refreshing and wry in equal measure, Happy Hour is an intoxicating novel of youth well spent. Isa Epley is all of twenty-one years old, and already wise enough to understand that the purpose of life is the pursuit of pleasure. After a sojourn across the pond, she arrives in New York City for a summer of adventure with her best friend, one newly blond Gala Novak. They have little money, but that’s hardly going to stop them from having a good time.

In her diary, Isa describes a sweltering summer in the glittering city. By day, the girls sell clothes in a market stall, pinching pennies for their Bed-Stuy sublet and bodega lunches. By night, they weave from Brooklyn to the Upper East Side to the Hamptons among a rotating cast of celebrities, artists, Internet entrepreneurs, stuffy intellectuals, and bad-mannered grifters. Money runs ever tighter and the strain tests their friendship as they try to convert their social capital into something more lasting than their precarious gigs as au pairs, nightclub hostesses, paid audience members, and aspiring foot fetish models. Through it all, Isa’s bold, beguiling voice captures the precise thrill of cultivating a life of glamour and intrigue as she juggles paying her dues with skipping out on the bill.

Happy Hour announces a dazzling new talent in Marlowe Granados, whose exquisite wit recalls Anita Loos’s 1925 classic, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, updated to evoke a recent, golden period of hope and transformation—the summer of 2013. A cri de cœur for party girls and anyone who has ever felt entitled to an adventure of their own, Happy Hour is an effervescent tonic for the ails of contemporary life.

“Marlowe Granados's Happy Hour is as refreshing as a gin fizz. It is a wild careening joyride through a hot sultry summer in New York in 2013, and it evokes that time with such sparkling specificity that you can feel the heat coming off the pavement. If you are looking for romance, ambition, glamour, and a story about what it means to be young and striving in the city, this is your song of the summer.
—Rachel Syme, New Yorker staff writer

“Happy Hour is a wild ride with a brilliantly cocky young protagonist who’s got the world wrapped around her finger. So propulsive you'll feel like you've been hypnotized.
—Zoe Whittall, author of The Best Kind of People

“A dreamy account of one heady summer, Marlowe Granados’s début is a dispatch from another land; not only New York City, but youth itself. Happy Hour is aptly titled—it’s an intoxicating little book, at once heartbreaking and joyful.
—Rumaan Alam, author of Rich and Pretty and That Kind of Mother

“Happy Hour is filled with charm, memorable insight, and witty aperçus, adding up to the realization that life, while unfair, is antic enough to be worth all the trouble.
—A. S. Hamrah, author of The Earth Dies Streaming

“Happy Hour feels like a secret casually revealed in a hotel lobby bathroom as you fix your lipstick and a breathless whisper at six in the morning when it’s too hot to sleep. Marlowe Granados writes sparkling prose with tenderness and unexpected depth. Happy Hour is a spellbinding début.

<![CDATA[The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches]]> 60018635 A warm and uplifting novel about an isolated witch whose opportunity to embrace a quirky new family--and a new love--changes the course of her life.

As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don't mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she's used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos pretending to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

But someone does. An unexpected message arrives, begging her to travel to the remote and mysterious Nowhere House to teach three young witches how to control their magic. It breaks all of the rules, but Mika goes anyway, and is immediately tangled up in the lives and secrets of not only her three charges, but also an absent archaeologist, a retired actor, two long-suffering caretakers, and...Jamie. The handsome and prickly librarian of Nowhere House would do anything to protect the children, and as far as he's concerned, a stranger like Mika is a threat. An irritatingly appealing threat.

As Mika begins to find her place at Nowhere House, the thought of belonging somewhere begins to feel like a real possibility. But magic isn't the only danger in the world, and when a threat comes knocking at their door, Mika will need to decide whether to risk everything to protect a found family she didn't know she was looking for....

Would have been sooooo much better as a Young Adult novel. The love story was aggressively inserted and took away from the dreamy, magical, witchy world.

The Wishing Game 62926992
Lucy Hart knows better than anyone what it’s like to grow up without parents who loved her. In a childhood marked by neglect and loneliness, Lucy found her solace in books, namely the Clock Island series by Jack Masterson. Now a twenty-six-year-old teacher’s aide, she is able to share her love of reading with bright, young students, especially seven-year-old Christopher Lamb, who was left orphaned after the tragic death of his parents. Lucy would give anything to adopt Christopher, but even the idea of becoming a family seems like an impossible dream without proper funds and stability.

But be careful what you wish for. . . .

Just when Lucy is about to give up, Jack Masterson announces he’s finally written a new book. Even better, he’s holding a contest at his home on the real Clock Island, and Lucy is one of the four lucky contestants chosen to compete to win the one and only copy.

For Lucy, the chance of winning the most sought-after book in the world means everything to her and Christopher. But first she must contend with ruthless book collectors, wily opponents, and the distractingly handsome (and grumpy) Hugo Reese, the illustrator of the Clock Island books. Meanwhile, Jack “the Mastermind Masterson is plotting the ultimate twist ending that could change all their lives forever.

. . . You might just get it.]]>

When the Harrisons retreat to the family lake house for the summer, with their daughter Mickey’s precocious new friend, Ruth, in tow, the opportunity Pey has waited a millennium for might finally be in his grasp. And with the help of his charismatic coworker Calamity, he sets a plan in motion.

Yellowface 175403998
Deadly consequences

Bestselling sensation Juniper Song is not who she says she is, she didn’t write the book she claims she wrote, and she is most certainly not Asian American—in this chilling and hilariously cutting novel from R.F. Kuang, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Babel .

Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars. But Athena’s a literary darling. June Hayward is literally nobody. Who wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks.

So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers during World War I. So what if June edits Athena’s novel and sends it to her agent as her own work? So what if she lets her new publisher rebrand her as Juniper Song—complete with an ambiguously ethnic author photo? Doesn’t this piece of history deserve to be told, whoever the teller? That’s what June claims, and the New York Times bestseller list seems to agree.

But June can’t get away from Athena’s shadow, and emerging evidence threatens to bring June’s (stolen) success down around her. As June races to protect her secret, she discovers exactly how far she will go to keep what she thinks she deserves. With its totally immersive first-person voice,

Yellowface grapples with questions of diversity, racism, and cultural appropriation, as well as the terrifying alienation of social media. R.F. Kuang’s novel is timely, razor-sharp, and eminently readable.]]>
419 R.F. Kuang 0063373866 Hunida 3 3.5 out of 5 stars

The premise of Yellowface was very intriguing and new. As voracious readers, many of us wonder about the backstory and lives of our favorite authors but, after finishing this novel I decided that I prefer to keep that mystery alive. If the publishing world is as evil and cutthroat as this book entails, I will stick to blindly reading books and ignoring names of authors.

R.F. Kuang successfully created the utmost hateable character; there was not one point in the story I cared for or liked the MC, Juniper. I am pretty sure this was intentional, especially for Asian people lol.

But overall, the beginning was lackluster and repetitive, the writing a bit juvenile yet the ending was unexpected in a way that kept me engrossed.

Demon Copperhead 60194162 "Anyone will tell you the born of this world are marked from the get-out, win or lose."

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, this is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father's good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. In a plot that never pauses for breath, relayed in his own unsparing voice, he braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities.

Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens' anger and compassion, and above all, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they can't imagine leaving behind.]]>

The Interestings 15815333
The summer that Nixon resigns, six teenagers at a summer camp for the arts become inseparable. Decades later the bond remains powerful, but so much else has changed. In The Interestings, Wolitzer follows these characters from the height of youth through middle age, as their talents, fortunes, and degrees of satisfaction diverge.

The kind of creativity that is rewarded at age fifteen is not always enough to propel someone through life at age thirty; not everyone can sustain, in adulthood, what seemed so special in adolescence. Jules Jacobson, an aspiring comic actress, eventually resigns herself to a more practical occupation and lifestyle. Her friend Jonah, a gifted musician, stops playing the guitar and becomes an engineer. But Ethan and Ash, Jules's now-married best friends, become shockingly successful—true to their initial artistic dreams, with the wealth and access that allow those dreams to keep expanding. The friendships endure and even prosper, but also underscore the differences in their fates, in what their talents have become and the shapes their lives have taken.

Wide in scope, ambitious, and populated by complex characters who come together and apart in a changing New York City, The Interestings explores the meaning of talent; the nature of envy; the roles of class, art, money, and power; and how all of it can shift and tilt precipitously over the course of a friendship and a life.]]>

Weyward 60654349 I am a Weyward, and wild inside.

2019: Under cover of darkness, Kate flees London for ramshackle Weyward Cottage, inherited from a great aunt she barely remembers. With its tumbling ivy and overgrown garden, the cottage is worlds away from the abusive partner who tormented Kate. But she begins to suspect that her great aunt had a secret. One that lurks in the bones of the cottage, hidden ever since the witch-hunts of the 17th century.

1619: Altha is awaiting trial for the murder of a local farmer who was stampeded to death by his herd. As a girl, Altha’s mother taught her their magic, a kind not rooted in spell casting but in a deep knowledge of the natural world. But unusual women have always been deemed dangerous, and as the evidence for witchcraft is set out against Altha, she knows it will take all of her powers to maintain her freedom.

1942: As World War II rages, Violet is trapped in her family's grand, crumbling estate. Straitjacketed by societal convention, she longs for the robust education her brother receives––and for her mother, long deceased, who was rumored to have gone mad before her death. The only traces Violet has of her are a locket bearing the initial W and the word weyward scratched into the baseboard of her bedroom.

Weaving together the stories of three extraordinary women across five centuries, Emilia Hart's Weyward is an enthralling novel of female resilience and the transformative power of the natural world.]]>

<![CDATA[Unmasked: My Life Solving America's Cold Cases]]> 57693618 From the detective who found The Golden State Killer, a memoir of investigating America’s toughest cold cases and the rewards--and toll--of a life solving crime.

I order another bourbon, neat. This is the drink that will flip the switch. I don’t even know how I got here, to this place, to this point. Something is happening to me lately. I’m drinking too much. My sheets are soaking wet when I wake up from nightmares of decaying corpses. I order another drink and swig it, trying to forget about the latest case I can’t shake.

Crime-solving for me is more complex than the challenge of the hunt, or the process of piecing together a scientific puzzle. The thought of good people suffering drives me, for better or worse, to the point of obsession.

People always ask how I am able to detach from the horrors of my work. Part of it is an innate capacity to compartmentalize; the rest is experience and exposure, and I’ve had plenty of both. But I had always taken pride in the fact that I can keep my feelings locked up to get the job done. It’s only been recently that it feels like all that suppressed darkness is beginning to seep out.

When I look back at my long career, there is a lot I am proud of. I have caught some of the most notorious killers of the twenty-first century and brought justice and closure for their victims and families. I want to tell you about a lifetime solving these cold cases, from Laci Peterson to Jaycee Dugard to the Pittsburg homicides to, yes, my twenty-year-long hunt for the Golden State Killer.

But a deeper question eats at me as I ask myself, at what cost? I have sacrificed relationships, joy—even fatherhood—because the pursuit of evil always came first. Did I make the right choice? It’s something I grapple with every day. Yet as I stand in the spot where a young girl took her last breath, as I look into the eyes of her family, I know that, for me, there has never been a choice. “I don’t know if I can solve your case, I whisper. “But I promise I will do my best.

It is a promise I know I can keep.]]>

Would Like to Meet 44525558
The catch? Ezra is suffering from writer's block--and he'll only put pen to paper if singleton Evie can prove to him that you can fall in love like they do in the movies. With the future of the agency in jeopardy, Evie embarks on a mission to meet a man the way Sally met Harry or Hugh Grant met Julia Roberts.

But in the course of testing out the meet-cute scenes from classic romantic comedies IRL, not only will Evie encounter one humiliating situation after another, but she'll have to confront the romantic past that soured her on love. In a novel as hilarious as it is heartwarming, debut author Rachel Winters proves that sometimes real life is better than the movies--and that the best kind of meet-cutes happen when you least expect them.

The best part about The Last Thing He Told Me for me, wasn't the mystery or thrilling plot, it was the growing relationship between Hannah and Bailey. So very sweet and real, lovely to see how things changed between them throughout and the patience/understanding Hannah had towards Bailey was just, ugh, heart clenching!!

I couldn't put the book down for the first 100 or so pages, the beginning sucked me in completely and from there on out, it was a bumpy roller coaster ride that I was fully strapped into. Hannah was so clever, the way she backtracked and remembered small details about her life with Owen before he vanished... her faithfulness and positivity... the way she could read people, how she knew who was on her side and who wasn't. Her beautiful heart and selflessness were the star of this story... even though investigating Owen and learning about his secret past was pretty fun, too. ;)

I loved our MC, he was unusual yet so easy to love.

Although there was basically only one real setting/place, the growth and development of the very few characters, was second to none. This book was easy to devour and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a thoughtful yet quick read.

The Sentence 56816904
Louise Erdrich's latest novel, The Sentence, asks what we owe to the living, the dead, to the reader and to the book. A small independent bookstore in Minneapolis is haunted from November 2019 to November 2020 by the store's most annoying customer. Flora dies on All Souls' Day, but she simply won't leave the store. Tookie, who has landed a job selling books after years of incarceration that she survived by reading with murderous attention, must solve the mystery of this haunting while at the same time trying to understand all that occurs in Minneapolis during a year of grief, astonishment, isolation, and furious reckoning.

The Sentence begins on All Souls' Day 2019 and ends on All Souls' Day 2020. Its mystery and proliferating ghost stories during this one year propel a narrative as rich, emotional, and profound as anything Louise Erdrich has written]]>

All the Rage 21853636
With a shocking conclusion and writing that will absolutely knock you out, All the Rage examines the shame and silence inflicted upon young women after an act of sexual violence, forcing us to ask ourselves: In a culture that refuses to protect its young girls, how can they survive?]]>

All too often, I just wanted to violently shake her! She made me so mad made me wish she’d react differently but then, she’d explain herself and it would just break me to understand. I always ended up wanting to hug her instead.

I enjoyed the parts following Romy’s family life, too. Both past and present. Todd and her mom were definitely my favorite side characters; just an absolute dream team they were. Though, the romance for Romy didn’t seem fully thought-out and it eventually became more of an annoyance than anything it was sweet and I do admit, it warmed my heart because I was just so darn happy for her; happy that there was hope for her to see the light again someday.

The ending did catch me by surprise but, at the same time, I was like, “of course. I wanted a few more things to be handled, maybe a little more justice dealt but, we all know in stories like this, that’s hard to come by.

If you enjoyed Sadie, also written by Courtney Summers, I think you’ll like this one, too. The tone, narration, and plot are quite similar but, sadly. that’s also true in real life, isn’t it?]]>

While there was a huge mystery to be solved, I was so absorbed in the writing and the emotions, I totally forgot to even try to play detective. Even through the time jumps I was never confused. Everything that went down, it all flowed into each other seamlessly. Reading Romy’s words, her scattered thoughts and her daily life, I truly felt like I knew her. Her character was so strong, so brave, yet fighting through more than I could ever bare.

The last thing Jacob Portman saw before the world went dark was a terrible, familiar face.

Suddenly, he and Noor are back in the place where everything began - his grandfather's house. Jacob doesn't know how they escaped from V's loop to find themselves in Florida. But he does know one thing for certain: Caul has returned.

After a narrow getaway from a blood-thirsty hollow, Jacob and Noor reunite with Miss Peregrine and the peculiar children in Devil's Acre. The Acre is being plagued by desolations - weather fronts of ash and blood and bone - a terrible portent of Caul's amassing army.

Risen from the Library of Souls and more powerful than ever, Caul and his apocalyptic agenda seem unstoppable. Only one hope remains - deliver Noor to the meeting place of the seven prophesied ones. If they can decipher its secret location.]]>

Very action packed and fast-paced! I loved the Noor and V storyline the most and of course, the blossoming romance! Even if some of the bumps and plot twists weren't that unique and could be found in almost any other fantasy novel or film, it was somehow still heart-racing and exciting! I would have liked a bit more on the rest of Miss Peregrine's wards at the ending but, overall, I was satisfied with how things turned out! Book Lovers 58690308 One summer. Two rivals. A plot twist they didn't see coming....

Nora Stephens life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby.

Which is why she agrees to go to Sunshine Falls, North Carolina for the month of August when Libby begs her for a sisters trip away—with visions of a small-town transformation for Nora, who she’s convinced needs to become the heroine in her own story. But instead of picnics in meadows, or run-ins with a handsome country doctor or bulging-forearmed bartender, Nora keeps bumping into Charlie Lastra, a bookish brooding editor from back in the city. It would be a meet-cute if not for the fact that they’ve met many times and it’s never been cute.

If Nora knows she’s not an ideal heroine, Charlie knows he’s nobody’s hero, but as they are thrown together again and again—in a series of coincidences no editor worth their salt would allow—what they discover might just unravel the carefully crafted stories they’ve written about themselves.]]>

<![CDATA[The Unraveling of Cassidy Holmes]]> 49086132
“I didn't know I was waiting for a smart, literary writer to craft a novel about the rise and fall of a teen star akin to Britney Spears until I discovered The Unraveling of Cassidy Holmes. A witty, bright, hilarious—and at times devastating—read. I loved it." —Amanda Eyre Ward, New York Times bestselling author of The Jetsetters

Cassidy Holmes isn't just a celebrity.

She is “Sassy Gloss, the fourth member of the hottest pop group America has ever seen. Before Britney stunned everyone with “Toxic, before Christina went dirrty, Gloss was the pop act that everyone idolized. Fans couldn't get enough of them, their music, and the drama that followed them like moths to a flame—until the group’s sudden implosion in 2002. And at the center of it all was Sassy Cassy, the Texan with a signature smirk that had everyone falling for her.

But now she's dead. Suicide.

The world is reeling from this unexpected news, but no one is more shocked than the three remaining bandmates. Fifteen years ago, Rose, Merry, and Yumi had been the closest to Cassidy, and this loss is hitting them hard. Before the group split, they each had a special bond with Cassidy—truths they told, secrets they shared. After years apart, each is wondering: what could they have done?

Told in multiple perspectives—including Cassidy herself—and different timelines, this is a behind-the-scenes look into the rise and fall of a pop icon, and a penetrating examination of the dark side of celebrity and the industry that profits from it.]]>

Sweeping from a harsh land of cold to a summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, A Game of Thrones tells a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; a child is lost in the twilight between life and death; and a determined woman undertakes a treacherous journey to protect all she holds dear. Amid plots and counter-plots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, allies and enemies, the fate of the Starks hangs perilously in the balance, as each side endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

<![CDATA[Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow]]> 58784475 In this exhilarating novel, two friends—often in love, but never lovers—come together as creative partners in the world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality.

On a bitter-cold day, in the December of his junior year at Harvard, Sam Masur exits a subway car and sees, amid the hordes of people waiting on the platform, Sadie Green. He calls her name. For a moment, she pretends she hasn't heard him, but then, she turns, and a game begins: a legendary collaboration that will launch them to stardom. These friends, intimates since childhood, borrow money, beg favors, and, before even graduating college, they have created their first blockbuster, Ichigo. Overnight, the world is theirs. Not even twenty-five years old, Sam and Sadie are brilliant, successful, and rich, but these qualities won't protect them from their own creative ambitions or the betrayals of their hearts.

Spanning thirty years, from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Venice Beach, California, and lands in between and far beyond, Gabrielle Zevin's Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow is a dazzling and intricately imagined novel that examines the multifarious nature of identity, disability, failure, the redemptive possibilities in play, and above all, our need to connect: to be loved and to love. Aww... Poppy and Alex were two of the most lovable characters I've ever met in a rom-com novel. I was rooting for them from the beginning! Reading about all their vacations, I felt transported to each location. The descriptive writing was absolutely whimsical, and I enjoyed the timeline jumping.

The passionate scenes just weren't for me though. Not that I'm a prude or anything... they were just extremely awkward and not at all... arousing... I just wanted to get through them and the pretty much, the entire last quarter of the book, as quickly as possible. Every part of the novel was based on Poppy and Alex so I had not a single care for any of the random side characters- none of them were fleshed out well enough for me to wonder about them- not their family members, exes, or any of their friends! Finding out the endings of all of their lives was so pointless. I would've been happier if the focus stayed where it was supposed to.]]>

One Two Three 42346406 In a town where nothing ever changes, suddenly everything does...

Everyone knows everyone in the tiny town of Bourne, but the Mitchell triplets are especially beloved. Mirabel is the smartest person anyone knows, and no one doubts it just because she can’t speak. Monday is the town’s purveyor of books now that the library’s closed―tell her the book you think you want, and she’ll pull the one you actually do from the microwave or her sock drawer. Mab’s job is hardest of all: get good grades, get into college, get out of Bourne.

For a few weeks seventeen years ago, Bourne was national news when its water turned green. The girls have come of age watching their mother’s endless fight for justice. But just when it seems life might go on the same forever, the first moving truck anyone’s seen in years pulls up and unloads new residents and old secrets. Soon, the Mitchell sisters are taking on a system stacked against them and uncovering mysteries buried longer than they’ve been alive. Because it's hard to let go of the past when the past won't let go of you.

Three unforgettable narrators join together here to tell a spellbinding story with wit, wonder, and deep affection. As she did in This Is How It Always Is, Laurie Frankel has written a laugh-out-loud-on-one-page-grab-a-tissue-the-next novel, as only she can, about how expanding our notions of normal makes the world a better place for everyone and how when days are darkest, it’s our daughters who will save us all.]]>

Counterfeit 59314709 The Reese's Book Club hardcover edition can be found here.

For fans of Hustlers and How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia, the story of two Asian American women who band together to grow a counterfeit handbag scheme into a global enterprise--an incisive and glittering blend of fashion, crime, and friendship from the author of Bury What We Cannot Take and Soy Sauce for Beginners.

Money can't buy happiness... but it can buy a decent fake.

Ava Wong has always played it safe. As a strait-laced, rule-abiding Chinese American lawyer with a successful surgeon as a husband, a young son, and a beautiful home--she's built the perfect life. But beneath this façade, Ava's world is crumbling: her marriage is falling apart, her expensive law degree hasn't been used in years, and her toddler's tantrums are pushing her to the breaking point.

Enter Winnie Fang, Ava's enigmatic college roommate from Mainland China, who abruptly dropped out under mysterious circumstances. Now, twenty years later, Winnie is looking to reconnect with her old friend. But the shy, awkward girl Ava once knew has been replaced with a confident woman of the world, dripping in luxury goods, including a coveted Birkin in classic orange. The secret to her success? Winnie has developed an ingenious counterfeit scheme that involves importing near-exact replicas of luxury handbags and now she needs someone with a U.S. passport to help manage her business--someone who'd never be suspected of wrongdoing, someone like Ava. But when their spectacular success is threatened and Winnie vanishes once again, Ava is left to face the consequences.

Swift, surprising, and sharply comic, Counterfeit is a stylish and feminist caper with a strong point of view and an axe to grind. Peering behind the curtain of the upscale designer storefronts and the Chinese factories where luxury goods are produced, Kirstin Chen interrogates the myth of the model minority through two unforgettable women determined to demand more from life.]]>

The People We Keep 57384346 BOOK RIOT’S BEST BOOKS OF 2021 “This is a novel of great empathy, about connections and coming-of-age, built families and self-acceptance. It contains heartbreak and redemption, and a plucky, irresistible protagonist…[A] propulsive, empathetic novel. —Shelf AwarenessLittle River, New York, 1994: April Sawicki is living in a motorless motorhome that her father won in a poker game. Failing out of school, picking up shifts at a local diner, she’s left fending for herself in a town where she’s never quite felt at home. When she “borrows her neighbor’s car to perform at an open mic night, she realizes her life could be much bigger than where she came from. After a fight with her dad, April packs her stuff and leaves for good, setting off on a journey to find a life that’s all hers. Driving without a chosen destination, she stops to rest in Ithaca. Her only plan is to survive, but as she looks for work, she finds a kindred sense of belonging at Cafe Decadence, the local coffee shop. Still, somehow, it doesn’t make sense to her that life could be this easy. The more she falls in love with her friends in Ithaca, the more she can’t shake the feeling that she’ll hurt them the way she’s been hurt. As April moves through the world, meeting people who feel like home, she chronicles her life in the songs she writes and discovers that where she came from doesn’t dictate who she has to be. This lyrical, luminous tale “is both a profound love letter to creative resilience and a reminder that sometimes even tragedy can be a kind of blessing (Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author).]]> 368 Allison Larkin 1982171316 Hunida 4 4.5 out of 5.0 stars

The People We Keep was such a beautiful, heart-warming story. I hate to admit that I almost didn't make it to the end because of how slow it read but, I am so glad I pushed through. Some novels really are meant to be finished and this one was the absolute definition of: 'it's better as you go along' and 'you have to get to the end!' to truly appreciate it.
I chose this book for the 2022 Ultimate Popsugar Reading Challenge: A Book About a "Found Family" and I don't think any other book would have sufficed for this prompt. It was just perfect.
April was never meant to the be the most exciting MC, her personality was a bit blah, but my gosh... her strength and unwavering kindness... the way she held onto certain people. The relationships she unknowingly built, they tugged at my heart strings so hard. The ending was more than I could have ever asked for. My eyes were just dripping until the very last page!]]>

The Ghost Bride 16248223 A startlingly original voice makes her literary debut with this wondrous coming-of-age story infused with Chinese folklore, romantic intrigue, adventure, and fascinating, dreamlike twists.

'One evening, my father asked me whether I would like to become a ghost bride...'

Though ruled by British overlords, the Chinese of colonial Malaya still cling to ancient customs. And in the sleepy port town of Malacca, ghosts and superstitions abound.

Li Lan, the daughter of a genteel but bankrupt family, has few prospects. But fate intervenes when she receives an unusual proposal from the wealthy and powerful Lim family. They want her to become a ghost bride for the family's only son, who recently died under mysterious circumstances. Rarely practiced, traditional ghost marriages are used to placate restless spirits. Such a union would guarantee Li Lan a home for the rest of her days, but at a terrible price.

After an ominous visit to the opulent Lim mansion, Li Lan finds herself haunted not only by her ghostly would-be suitor, but also by her desire for the Lims' handsome new heir, Tian Bai. Night after night, she is drawn into the shadowy parallel world of the Chinese afterlife, with its ghost cities, paper funeral offerings, vengeful spirits, and monstrous bureaucracy—including the mysterious Er Lang, a charming but unpredictable guardian spirit. Li Lan must uncover the Lim family's darkest secrets—and the truth about her own family—before she is trapped in this ghostly world forever.]]>

Oh, how fun was this book! I'm usually very paranoid and afraid when I read about ghosts, feeling all kinds of spooky in my bones but, following Li Lan wasn't like that. She was adventurous and so, so brave. Her curiosity would usually send me over the edge, yelling to stay put, to stay safe, but most of the time... I was rooting her on, hoping she'd find every answer she was looking for.
The many different characters she meets along the way were all so unique and fascinating. None of them were around for no reason, each soul had a meaning and I loved that. The story always seemed to go around, full circle, making us question how we missed such small and important details.
The romance portion was unexpected and the way it wrapped up made my heart twirl!
The afterlife and how it was explained in this world created by author, Yangsze Choo, was easily imaginable and really close to believable. My thoughts were racing every time I dug my nose into The Ghost Bride. I loved every second and every word!]]>

The Maid (Molly the Maid, #1) 57690123 A charmingly eccentric hotel maid discovers a guest murdered in his bed. Solving the mystery will turn her once orderly world upside down in this utterly original debut.

Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misinterprets the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by.

Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has had to navigate life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection.

But Molly’s orderly life is turned on its head the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself very dead in his bed. Before she knows what’s happening, Molly’s unusual demeanor has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black—but will they be able to find the real killer before it’s too late?

A Clue-like, locked-room mystery and a heartwarming journey of the spirit, The Maid explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different—and reveals that all mysteries can be solved through connection to the human heart.]]>

The Maid was a very endearing, sort of even heartwarming, mystery novel. It was a simple and fun read with not much to think about throughout. I grew to love our quirky MC and the way she saw and understood things. While she was peculiar, the way she described her thoughts and the emotions she felt always made perfect sense to me.
It broke my heart every time she mentioned her grandma yet, I found myself looking forward to hearing more of their sweet memories. I've always loved relationships similar to the one they had.
The best part about this book were the different characters. It was hard to decipher which ones were on her side and which ones weren't, I see where she got confused, even when situations seemed perfectly clear.
The ending... came out of nowhere and I really did like it... but it just didn't seem right? Almost like the author decided to switch who dun it in the middle of the book and acted as if it had been right in front of our faces all along.]]>

The Best We Could Do 34023352 An intimate and poignant graphic novel portraying one family’s journey from war-torn Vietnam, from debut author Thi Bui.

This beautifully illustrated and emotional story is an evocative memoir about the search for a better future and a longing for the past. Exploring the anguish of immigration and the lasting effects that displacement has on a child and her family, Bui documents the story of her family’s daring escape after the fall of South Vietnam in the 1970s, and the difficulties they faced building new lives for themselves.

At the heart of Bui’s story is a universal struggle: While adjusting to life as a first-time mother, she ultimately discovers what it means to be a parent—the endless sacrifices, the unnoticed gestures, and the depths of unspoken love. Despite how impossible it seems to take on the simultaneous roles of both parent and child, Bui pushes through. With haunting, poetic writing and breathtaking art, she examines the strength of family, the importance of identity, and the meaning of home.

In what Pulitzer Prize–winning novelist Viet Thanh Nguyen calls “a book to break your heart and heal it, The Best We Could Do brings to life Thi Bui’s journey of understanding, and provides inspiration to all of those who search for a better future while longing for a simpler past.]]>

The End of Men 55372861 "The End of Men is a fiercely intelligent page-turner, an eerily prescient novel, at once thoughtful and highly emotive." --Paula Hawkins, #1 internationally bestselling author of The Girl on the TrainSet in a world where a virus stalks our male population, The End of Men is an electrifying and unforgettable debut from a remarkable new talent that what would our world truly look like without men?Only men carry the virus. Only women can save us all. The year is 2025, and a mysterious virus has broken out in Scotland--a lethal illness that seems to affect only men. When Dr. Amanda MacLean reports this phenomenon, she is dismissed as hysterical. By the time her warning is heeded, it is too late. The virus becomes a global pandemic--and a political one. The victims are all men. The world becomes alien--a women's world. What follows is the immersive account of the women who have been left to deal with the virus's consequences, told through first-person narratives. Dr. MacLean; Catherine, a social historian determined to document the human stories behind the "male plague"; intelligence analyst Dawn, tasked with helping the government forge a new society; and Elizabeth, one of many scientists desperately working to develop a vaccine. Through these women and others, we see the uncountable ways the absence of men has changed society, from the personal--the loss of husbands and sons--to the political--the changes in the workforce, fertility, and the meaning of family. In The End of Men, Christina Sweeney-Baird turns the unimaginable into the unforgettable.]]> 414 Christina Sweeney-Baird 0593328140 Hunida 4 4.25 out of 5.00 stars

What a crazy idea for a book! As I was reading it, I totally thought the author wrote this during the pandemic and just kind of based it off that. Either way, for me, it was wild to think about the disease only affecting men. Once I finished reading and did a deep dive, I learned that the author had written this even before the pandemic started and that blew my mind! She must have been in absolute shock!
I was the biggest fan of Catherine and felt her story, emotions, and character was 100% the most fleshed out. The rest of the POVs were a bit blah... I could barely tell who was who until close to the end when the roles were more distinguished. I hated the Maria Ferreira articles!
Lisa, who may not have pleased many, stood out to me, too. I loved her brutal honesty, absolute confidence and I believe that a lot of doctors/scientists out there feel the exact ways that she did. The End of Men was an absolute whirlwind, super interesting... it had me rapidly turning the pages, crying, eyes widening and, just really actually, appreciating the men in my life.]]>

<![CDATA[Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother]]> 10173280 An awe-inspiring, often hilarious, and unerringly honest story of one mother's exercise in extreme parenting, revealing the rewards-and the costs-of raising her children the Chinese way.

All decent parents want to do what's best for their children. What Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother reveals is that the Chinese just have a totally different idea of how to do that. Western parents try to respect their children's individuality, encouraging them to pursue their true passions and providing a nurturing environment. The Chinese believe that the best way to protect your children is by preparing them for the future and arming them with skills, strong work habits, and inner confidence. Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother chronicles Chua's iron-willed decision to raise her daughters, Sophia and Lulu, her way-the Chinese way-and the remarkable results her choice inspires.

Here are some things Amy Chua would never allow her daughters to

 have a playdate

 be in a school play

complain about not being in a school play

not be the #1 student in every subject except gym and drama

play any instrument other than the piano or violin

not play the piano or violin

The truth is Lulu and Sophia would never have had time for a playdate. They were too busy practicing their instruments (two to three hours a day and double sessions on the weekend) and perfecting their Mandarin.

Of course no one is perfect, including Chua herself. Witness this

"According to Sophia, here are three things I actually said to her at the piano as I supervised her

1. Oh my God, you're just getting worse and worse.

2. I'm going to count to three, then I want musicality.

3. If the next time's not PERFECT, I'm going to take all your stuffed animals and burn them!"

But Chua demands as much of herself as she does of her daughters. And in her sacrifices-the exacting attention spent studying her daughters' performances, the office hours lost shuttling the girls to lessons-the depth of her love for her children becomes clear. Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother is an eye-opening exploration of the differences in Eastern and Western parenting- and the lessons parents and children everywhere teach one another.]]>

“I can’t help but compare our worth as writers, as lovers, as women. Is anything solely mine, or will I always dwell in someone else’s shadow?

Twenty-four-year-old bookseller and New Yorker Naomi Ackerman, desperate to write a novel, struggles to find the right story to tell. When, after years of disastrous Tinder dates, she meets Caleb—a perfectly nice guy with a Welsh accent and a unique patience for all of her quirks—she feels she's finally stumbled onto a time-honored subject: love. But then Caleb's ex-girlfriend, Rosemary, enters the scene.

When Naomi learns that Rosemary is not safely tucked away overseas as she'd assumed but in fact lives in New York and works in the literary world, she is fundamentally threatened and intrigued in equal measure. On paper, Rosemary sounds like a better version of Naomi—but if they both fell for the same man, they must have something more essential in common.

Determined to figure out how their stories intertwine, Naomi's casual Instagram stalking morphs into a full-blown friendship under false pretenses. She can't seem to get herself to quit Rosemary, in whom she discovers an unexpected confidant—and she can't stop writing about her either, having now found a more interesting subject for her nascent novel. As her lies and half-truths spiral out of her control, and fact and fiction become increasingly difficult to separate, Naomi manipulates the most important people in her life—her family, her friends, Caleb, Rosemary, and, perhaps most devastatingly, herself—in pursuit of her craft. Ultimately, she’s forced to decide who and what she's willing to sacrifice to write them all the perfect ending.]]>

People Like Her 56141668 A razor-sharp, wickedly smart suspense debut about an ambitious influencer mom whose soaring success threatens her marriage, her morals, and her family’s safety.

Followed by Millions, Watched by One

To her adoring fans, Emmy Jackson, aka@the_mamabare, is the honest “Instamum who always tells it like it is.

To her skeptical husband, a washed-up novelist who knows just how creative Emmy can be with the truth, she is a breadwinning powerhouse chillingly brilliant at monetizing the intimate details of their family life.

To one of Emmy’s dangerously obsessive followers, she’s the woman that has everything—but deserves none of it.

As Emmy’s marriage begins to crack under the strain of her growing success and her moral compass veers wildly off course, the more vulnerable she becomes to a very real danger circling ever closer to her family.

In this deeply addictive tale of psychological suspense, Ellery Lloyd raises important questions about technology, social media celebrity, and the way we live today. Probing the dark side of influencer culture and the perils of parenting online, People Like Her explores our desperate need to be seen and the lengths we’ll go to be liked by strangers. It asks what—and who—we sacrifice when make our private lives public, and ultimately lose control of who we let in. . . .]]>

Oh my gosh, I could not have hated Evie (our MC) more. I rolled my eyes at her so hard, I thought they'd get stuck in the back of my head. She was so insecure about herself! The way she described her looks, made me believe that she was extremely unattractive and I'm sorry... there's no nice way to say this but, I actually physically cringed during the "steamy" scenes (that came out of absolutely nowhere and were poorly written across way too many pages) imagining her and her equally unattractive Love Interest together. *puke*

The coastal scenery and bookshop were the only two things that grabbed my heart. I felt transported to the small town of Northumberland through the author's words and with every new adjective, simile, and metaphor she used, I could see more and more vividly. Those parts were all beautiful.

But, the story? I'm still confused. WHY was there so much side-drama? And why was it all such POINTLESSNESS? The last *shocker* of all was the worst, too. It ruined everything, not only for me, but for Evie, too... YET, at the very same time, her reaction was way out of proportion. I wanted to close the book when I witnessed her temper tantrum.

Her "best friend" Greer is similarly self-righteous and annoying. The village folk are shallow and stereotypical, making the whole place unappealing-- I'd never move there with those people. The way she treats her mom is ridiculous.]]>

I'm just sad this book wasn't half as good as the ones I've read by this duo in the past. I didn't laugh, feel rosy, or even really care for the romance that took place. The title had potential to give the story a unique twist but, the 'Honey-Do' lists were rarely mentioned.

Carey was fine but, predictable... James was BORING and very easy-to-hate. Not sure if he was meant to be this way or if it was just me. Their "steamy" scenes were descriptive yet, super clean... *big yawn*

Luckily, Melly and Rusty were interesting enough for me to keep reading. I wanted to see where things ended up for their relationship & career... way more than I ever cared about our two main characters.]]>

Kitchen 42952153 Kitchen, the dazzling English-language debut that is still her best-loved book, the literary world realized that Yoshimoto was a young writer of enduring talent whose work has quickly earned a place among the best of contemporary Japanese literature. Kitchen is an enchantingly original book that juxtaposes two tales about mothers, love, tragedy, and the power of the kitchen and home in the lives of a pair of free-spirited young women in contemporary Japan. Mikage, the heroine, is an orphan raised by her grandmother, who has passed away. Grieving, Mikage is taken in by her friend Yoichi and his mother (who is really his cross-dressing father) Eriko. As the three of them form an improvised family that soon weathers its own tragic losses, Yoshimoto spins a lovely, evocative tale with the kitchen and the comforts of home at its heart.

In a whimsical style that recalls the early Marguerite Duras, "Kitchen" and its companion story, "Moonlight Shadow," are elegant tales whose seeming simplicity is the ruse of a very special writer whose voice echoes in the mind and the soul.

This book was short and sweet. There could have been more to it but, it's obvious that the quick nature of the story was on purpose. It was meant to be this way. Yet, the writing was so fun and engaging, I couldn't help but, be selfish and want more. Both mini-stories included were satisfying enough- with a great beginning, middle, and end. The descriptive scenes were a bit annoying, though; the sky was described as BLUE way too many times! At one point, I said to myself, "if I read that one more time......." I almost put the book down.

The killer was obvious at their immediate introduction and while that was OK with me... there were definitely many ways this could have been prevented, and many ways it could have made the overall story BETTER, if it had been.

The unveiling of dark secrets, constant drama, and jaw-dropping action were what made One by One easy to devour and absolutely thrilling! I loved the whole idea of the Snoop app, it was extremely intriguing to me. I just wish the many characters included had been more fleshed-out. There were way too many of them to keep track of or ever connect to. The fact that they were all "stereotypes" made it a tiny bit easier, though.

The scenery descriptions were breathtaking, too. I could vividly imagine every part of the snowy alps and I felt cozy by the fire inside the cabin. I got scared at the intense parts and nearly screamed at the heartstoppers but, I have to admit the ending cracked me up! I was laughing my head off... even if I should not have been! A Pho Love Story 40490871 When Dimple Met Rishi meets Ugly Delicious in this funny, smart romantic comedy, in which two Vietnamese-American teens fall in love and must navigate their newfound relationship amid their families age-old feud about their competing, neighboring restaurants.

If Bao Nguyen had to describe himself, he’d say he was a rock. Steady and strong, but not particularly interesting. His grades are average, his social status unremarkable. He works at his parents pho restaurant, and even there, he is his parents fifth favorite employee. Not ideal.

If Linh Mai had to describe herself, she’d say she was a firecracker. Stable when unlit, but full of potential for joy and spark and fire. She loves art and dreams pursuing a career in it. The only problem? Her parents rely on her in ways they’re not willing to admit, including working practically full-time at her family’s pho restaurant.

For years, the Mais and the Nguyens have been at odds, having owned competing, neighboring ph restaurants. Bao and Linh, who’ve avoided each other for most of their lives, both suspect that the feud stems from feelings much deeper than friendly competition.

But then a chance encounter brings Linh and Bao together despite their best efforts and sparks fly, leading them both to wonder what took so long for them to connect. But then, of course, they immediately remember.

Can Linh and Bao find love in the midst of feuding families and complicated histories?]]>

Oh how I wish we could have stayed on Bao's narrative the entire novel. Linh was just so whiny and hard to handle. She was unreliable, indecisive and any real answers to the plotline were mostly given to us by Bao. Not to mention, all of her chapters were a bit of a drag. The writing style the author went with with Bao, simple and silly, was just much more enjoyable.

I am not Vietnamese but, I am Cambodian and woo-wee, did I get a kick out of the similarities of our parents. I was laughing out loud often and nodding my head up and down vigorously. Some of the foods mentioned were traditional for me, too, and I was left drooling after the descriptions. (Especially of the Nguyens' Banh Xeo cookin'... mmmmmm.) The best friends, Viet and Ali, were both super fun and spunky as well-- I loved all their meddling between Bao and Linh.

I would have also loved an index of translations! There were tons of phrases and words I didn't bother to look up- it could have been like a learning experience, y'know?]]>

I usually stray away from novels written in third person- I can only seem to connect to stories that are in the narrative, first-person. But I was totally tricked into reading Queenie Malone's Paradise Hotel because by the second chapter, the POVs switch off from Tilda to Tilly (from first to third). They are the same person, at very different ages.

Even though I assumed I'd be racing through Tilly's scenes to get to Tilda's, eventually it became the opposite. Little Tilly's antics and innocent thoughts made me smirk and giggle constantly. I loved her so much! And what an exciting life she lived in the Paradise Hotel. I wished for just more, more, more of the wild tales and adventures, people and playtime!

I did have to wonder about the boarding school though, why was nothing ever really mentioned about her time there?

There were so many moments and discoveries that broke my heart into pieces but, all the right tidbits were there to help mend it, too. The side characters were lovely and complementing, well fleshed out but, never overpowering our MC's storyline. The ending for everyone involved was so, so satisfying- I was confident in letting Tilda and her companions go, absolutely sure that they'll be living their happily ever after. Yay!]]>

It was interesting to learn about Native Americans and their background but, there were parts of the book that were too full of facts- it became such a bore. The school play storyline along with Journalism class would have sufficed but, the author unfittingly branches out and loses focus often.

I thought I was going in for a cutesy teenage romance, which I did sort of find... somewhere in the midst of it all but, I was far from satisfied! Joey's character was seriously adorable; I wish we could have delved deeper into their relationship and followed along while they grew closer.

Sadly, much like the rest of the book, their first kiss was only slightly touched upon and their relationship blossomed without us really knowing when and how. The side characters were unmemorable and none of them were even close to being fleshed out enough yet, for some reason, they were included and mentioned repeatedly!]]>

Being Toffee 54543580 I am not who I say I am,
and Marla isn't who she thinks she is.

I am a girl trying to forget.
She is a woman trying to remember.

Allison has run away from home and with nowhere to live finds herself hiding out in the shed of what she thinks is an abandoned house. But the house isn't empty. An elderly woman named Marla, with dementia, lives there - and she mistakes Allison for an old friend from her past named Toffee.

Allison is used to hiding who she really is, and trying to be what other people want her to be. And so, Toffee is who she becomes. After all, it means she has a place to stay. There are worse places she could be.

But as their bond grows, and Allison discovers how much Marla needs a real friend, she begins to ask herself - where is home? What is a family? And most importantly, who is she, really?]]>

Toffee!!! I mean, Allison... was so brave and bold. She wasn't your typical broken and damaged teen MC- she grabbed, pulled and twisted my heart from the very beginning. Her nonchalance baffled me often; I was envious of it. I was also shocked how she handled certain situations but, every step she took was admirable and justified.

Marla, ah. Her story was just as heart wrenching, if not more so than Allison's. I wish I could be the one to be there for her. F*ck Donal and Peggy.

The best part of Being Toffee, though, was the writing & format. Just beautiful. The way everything unfolds was perfect. I especially enjoyed how the two main characters grew closer and closer as time went on and how that was displayed through repetitively-titled chapters. Wow!!]]>

The Royal We (Royal We, #1) 24384702 In their first adult novel, authors Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan take on a story of romance and rivalries inspired by today's most talked-about royal couple: Will and Kate.

"If I'm Cinderella today, I dread who they'll think I am tomorrow. I guess it depends on what I do next."

American Rebecca Porter was never one for fairy-tales. Her twin sister Lacey was always the romantic, the one who daydreamed of being a princess. But it's adventure-seeking Bex who goes to Oxford and meets dreamy Nick across the hall - and thus Bex who accidentally finds herself in love with the eventual heir to the British throne. Nick is everything she could have imagined, but Prince Nicholas has unimaginable baggage: grasping friends, a thorny family, hysterical tabloids tracking his every move, and a public that expected its future king to marry a native. On the eve of the most talked-about wedding of the century, Bex reflects on what she's sacrificed for love -- and exactly whose heart she may yet have to break.]]>

I can't decide if I love or hate Bex. She made an awful amount of questionable decisions, I couldn't help my head from continuously shaking side to side. There were *some things* that didn't sit well with me, didn't even fit into the story, but is basically the entire reason for the sequel... there was so much potential elsewhere. **(POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT: I personally would have a preferred a powerful, unbreakable, rebellious friendship trope instead).

The side characters and all of their "dilemmas" were much more sweet and satisfying to uncover than Nick and Bex's bore-fest. I loved Gaz, Cilla, even Lady Bollocks a ton more.

Speaking of Nick, the book rarely does!! He's our male lead here and yet, he's not mentioned nearly as much as everyone else involved. I wanted more from him, needed it. Every scene and secret that had to do with him were my favorite to devour. But, to be honest, ALL of the secrets, scandal, blackmail, etc. were my favorite. The Royal We is a juicy and delicious novel filled to the brim with gossip.]]>

Concrete Rose 53036402 International phenomenon Angie Thomas revisits Garden Heights seventeen years before the events of The Hate U Give in this searing and poignant exploration of Black boyhood and manhood.

If there’s one thing seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter knows, it’s that a real man takes care of his family. As the son of a former gang legend, Mav does that the only way he knows how: dealing for the King Lords. With this money he can help his mom, who works two jobs while his dad’s in prison.

Life’s not perfect, but with a fly girlfriend and a cousin who always has his back, Mav’s got everything under control.

Until, that is, Maverick finds out he’s a father.

Suddenly he has a baby, Seven, who depends on him for everything. But it’s not so easy to sling dope, finish school, and raise a child. So when he’s offered the chance to go straight, he takes it. In a world where he’s expected to amount to nothing, maybe Mav can prove he’s different.

When King Lord blood runs through your veins, though, you can't just walk away. Loyalty, revenge, and responsibility threaten to tear Mav apart, especially after the brutal murder of a loved one. He’ll have to figure out for himself what it really means to be a man.]]>

Aw wow. I loved Maverick as a dad in THUG but, I loved him even more growing up, as a teenager, in Concrete Rose. The way he loved his mom and girlfriend melted my heart. It's not easy always being a "tough man" & it was an emotional roller coaster following him through the ups and downs- wondering which path he would eventually take.

There were scenes that took me by complete surprise. My heart shattered out of nowhere & I'm not sure it's completely mended yet. While I know this was fiction, I felt like these characters were real. I wanted to hug and hold them so many times. Still do!]]>

Wild and Crooked 40653221 Critically acclaimed author Leah Thomas blends a small-town setting with the secrets of a long-ago crime, in a compelling novel about breaking free from the past.

In Samsboro, Kentucky, Kalyn Spence's name is inseparable from the brutal murder her father committed when he was a teenager. Forced to return to town, Kalyn must attend school under a pseudonym . . . or face the lingering anger of Samsboro's citizens, who refuse to forget the crime.

Gus Peake has never had the luxury of redefining himself. A Samsboro native, he's either known as the "disabled kid" because of his cerebral palsy, or as the kid whose dad was murdered. Gus just wants to be known as himself.

When Gus meets Kalyn, her frankness is refreshing, and they form a deep friendship. Until their families' pasts emerge. And when the accepted version of the truth is questioned, Kalyn and Gus are caught in the center of a national uproar. Can they break free from a legacy of inherited lies and chart their own paths forward?.]]>

Here Is the Beehive 52038928 A brilliantly original debut about a love affair cut short, and how lonely it is to live inside a secret -- for fans of Sally Rooney, Sheila Heti, and Ottessa Moshfegh.

Ana Kelly can deal with death. As an estate lawyer, an unfortunate part of her day-to-day is phone calls from the next of kin informing her that one of her clients has died. But nothing could have prepared Ana for the call from Rebecca Taylor, explaining in a strangely calm tone that her husband Connor was killed in an accident.

Ana had been having an affair with Connor for three years, keeping their love secret in hotel rooms, weekends away, and swiftly deleted text messages. Though consuming, they hide their love well, and nobody knows of their relationship except Mark, Connor's best friend.

Alone and undone, Ana seeks friendship with the person who she once thought of as her adversary and opposite, but who is now the only one who shares her pain -- Rebecca. As Ana becomes closer to her lover's widow, she is forced to reconcile painful truths about the affair, and the fickleness of love and desire.

Funny, frank, and strange, Sarah Crossan's moving novel is wholly original and deeply resonant.]]>

Navigating this cutthroat city are four young women balancing on the razor edge of survival: Kyuri, an exquisitely beautiful woman whose hard-won status at an exclusive 'room salon' is threatened by an impulsive mistake with a client; her flatmate, Miho, an orphan who wins a scholarship to a prestigious art school in New York, where her life becomes tragically enmeshed with the super-wealthy offspring of the Korean elite; Wonna, their neighbour, pregnant with a child that she and her husband have no idea how they will afford to raise in a fiercely competitive economy; and Ara, a hair stylist living down the hall, whose infatuation with a fresh-faced K-Pop star drives her to violent extremes.]]>

If anyone reads this novel looking for more than a beautiful, entrancing story of friendship, they will be disappointed. While many other topics are touched on, they are not to be of focus. The way these girls found each other and cared for one another, that's what it was all about. Each of them fit in perfectly... I would not have done away with any of the four voices BUT, I would have loved another one added-- that of Sujin's. She was such a strong character, I wish to have learned more about her. She seemed to have been the glue of everything!

The length of this book was just right, too. Not one character was delved more deeply into and while each of their backgrounds and histories were revealed... everything always felt a bit ambiguous still. Each girl obviously had so much more to tell but, the way we uncovered so much in so little time was delicious. It would take an entire novel per character, I assume, for the author to unveil every crook and cranny of their lives. I am super satisfied with what we got. It was enough to make me love them all... except maybe Miho (but, that's because her personality & opinions sucked).]]>

My Dark Vanessa 45865963 Exploring the psychological dynamics of the relationship between a precocious yet naïve teenage girl and her magnetic and manipulative teacher, a brilliant, all-consuming read that marks the explosive debut of an extraordinary new writer.

2000. Bright, ambitious, and yearning for adulthood, fifteen-year-old Vanessa Wye becomes entangled in an affair with Jacob Strane, her magnetic and guileful forty-two-year-old English teacher.

2017. Amid the rising wave of allegations against powerful men, a reckoning is coming due. Strane has been accused of sexual abuse by a former student, who reaches out to Vanessa, and now Vanessa suddenly finds herself facing an impossible remain silent, firm in the belief that her teenage self willingly engaged in this relationship, or redefine herself and the events of her past. But how can Vanessa reject her first love, the man who fundamentally transformed her and has been a persistent presence in her life? Is it possible that the man she loved as a teenager—and who professed to worship only her—may be far different from what she has always believed?

Alternating between Vanessa’s present and her past, My Dark Vanessa juxtaposes memory and trauma with the breathless excitement of a teenage girl discovering the power her own body can wield. Thought-provoking and impossible to put down, this is a masterful portrayal of troubled adolescence and its repercussions that raises vital questions about agency, consent, complicity, and victimhood. Written with the haunting intimacy of The Girls and the creeping intensity of Room, My Dark Vanessa is an era-defining novel that brilliantly captures and reflects the shifting cultural mores transforming our relationships and society itself.

Now living with her sister in The Hangmen’s secluded compound, finally, Maddie, is free. Free from the suffocating faith she no longer believes in. Free from endless years of physical and mental torment.

I am totally enraptured by the Hades Hangmen Series. All of the Hangmen are just... so different & full of chaotic, fun energy. With the sisters, Maddie has been my least favorite so far but, that's on me. Timid main characters are usually never my type.
Flame's chapters made up for everything I felt was lacking. I couldn't get enough of him; being in his mind was nothing like I ever expected. It was dark with a hopeful peak of light, always trying its hardest to push through. I could not wait for it to finally find its way & fully shine.
The events in this book were a bit up and down. Unlike the previous two in the series, there wasn't much action or "danger." It was more about the romance and of reliving dark pasts. Nothing else that happened around them really mattered until near to the end- where we were gifted with a gorey, crude scene. Although I truly did enjoy my time with Flame & Maddie (& even more so, with all the raw emotions I was constantly made to feel)... I still longed to go on those "runs" with the motorcycle gang! I wanted to see all that they did, too!
Reading the synopsis for Book #4, I realize I did not expect the next story to be Prophet Cain's (but, it is making sense now). More of him and the cult should've been included in Souls Unfractured. It's almost like... this book was a commercial between the on-going war. A sort of light break, a quick breather- even if the content was darker than all.]]>

A sort of light break, a quick breather- even if the content was darker than all.

Wow, what a gorgeous book, written in such a beautiful style. These two girls were bursting out of the pages-- they both had so much spunk & wit. I admit, I favored Camino, as a character but, I enjoyed reading Yahaira's chapters a little more. Her Mami was so interesting & her relationship with Dre brought tears to my eyes, every time she mentioned her. The only thing I'm left wanting even after reading such a fulfilling book was an answer to WHY? Why did their father not tell them about each other?]]>
