Demon Copperhead 219876054 Demon Copperhead is set in the mountains of southern Appalachia. It's the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father's good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. In a plot that never pauses for breath, relayed in his own unsparing voice, he braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities.

Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens' anger and compassion, and above all, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they can't imagine leaving behind.]]>

Great story, long story! By the end there is nothing I didn't know about Demon Copperhead. I wasn't sure I would like the detailed life story with so many tragic themes but having finished it, I can say it felt authentic and satisfying. As someone who has lived in VA and TN, I felt especially connected due to all the familiar landmarks mentioned in the book. The natural beauty here is described well and the poverty/addiction issues handled with sensitivity and sadness, nothing mean-spirited. I will never forget Demon and the many colorful characters that were pivotal in his roller coaster life!

Tell Me What You Did 209823382
Poe Webb, host of a popular true crime podcast, invites people to anonymously confess crimes they've committed to her audience. She can't guarantee the police won't come after her "guests," but her show grants simultaneous anonymity and instant fame—a potent combination that's proven difficult to resist. After an episode recording, Poe usually erases both criminal and crime from her mind.

But when a strange and oddly familiar man appears on her show, Poe is forced to take a second look. Not only because he claims to be her mother's murderer from years ago, but because Poe knows something no one else does. Her mother's murderer is dead.

Poe killed him.

From the USA Today bestselling author of The Dead Girl in 2A and The New Neighbor comes a chilling new thriller that forces the question: are murderers always the bad guys?]]>

This is a page turner so I give credit to Carter Wilson for his ability to keep the reader curious enough to turn those pages. For me, the characters were unlikable and unrelatable. It was not fun to read, actually pretty unpleasant with frequent references to torture, alcohol abuse, and revenge killings. There is also overuse of the f-bomb from Poe, the main character which loses any intended effect after 100 times or so. When I think of really good psychological thrillers, there are always elements of goodness somewhere that feels authentic and help create a balance of emotions and hope for some sort of moral redemption. This story didn't do that for me. Finally, the ending felt contrived with most of the loose ends conveniently tied up. Meh....

<![CDATA[A Song for Nagasaki: The Story of Takashi Nagai: Scientist, Convert, and Survivor of the Atomic Bomb]]> 20527633 On August 9, 1945, an American B-29 dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan, killing tens of thousands of people in the blink of an eye, while fatally injuring and poisoning thousands more. Among the survivors was Takashi Nagai, a pioneer in radiology research and a convert to the Catholic Faith. Living in the rubble of the ruined city and suffering from leukemia caused by over-exposure to radiation, Nagai lived out the remainder of his remarkable life by bringing physical and spiritual healing to his war-weary people.

A Song for Nagasaki tells the moving story of this extraordinary man, beginning with his boyhood and the heroic tales and stoic virtues of his family’s Shinto religion. It reveals the inspiring story of Nagai’s remarkable spiritual journey from Shintoism to atheism to Catholicism. Mixed with interesting details about Japanese history and culture, the biography traces Nagai’s spiritual quest as he studied medicine at Nagasaki University, served as a medic with the Japanese army during its occupation of Manchuria, and returned to Nagasaki to dedicate himself to the science of radiology. The historic Catholic district of the city, where Nagai became a Catholic and began a family, was ground zero for the atomic bomb.

After the bomb disaster that killed thousands, including Nagai’s beloved wife, Nagai, then Dean of Radiology at Nagasaki University, threw himself into service to the countless victims of the bomb explosion, even though it meant deadly exposure to the radiation which eventually would cause his own death. While dying, he also wrote powerful books that became best-sellers in Japan. These included The Bells of Nagasaki, which resonated deeply with the Japanese people in their great suffering as it explores the Christian message of love and forgiveness. Nagai became a highly revered man and is considered a saint by many Japanese people.

The Lies They Told 220999703
When Lena Conti—a young, unwed mother—sees immigrant families being forcibly separated on Ellis Island, she vows not to let the officers take her two-year old daughter. But the inspection process is more rigorous than she imagined, and she is separated from her mother and teenage brother, who are labeled burdens to society, denied entry, and deported back to Germany. Now, alone but determined to give her daughter a better life after years of living in poverty and near starvation, she finds herself facing a future unlike anything she had envisioned.

Silas Wolfe, a widowed family relative, reluctantly brings Lena and her daughter to his weathered cabin in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains to care for his home and children. Though the hills around Wolfe Hollow remind Lena of her homeland, she struggles to adjust. Worse, she is stunned to learn the children in her care have been taught to hide when the sheriff comes around. As Lena meets their neighbors, she realizes the community is vibrant and tight knit, but also senses growing unease. The State of Virginia is scheming to paint them as ignorant, immoral, and backwards so they can evict them from their land, seize children from parents, and deal with those possessing “inferior genes.

After a social worker from the Eugenics Office accuses Lena of promiscuity and feeblemindedness, her own worst fears come true. Sent to the Virginia State Colony for the Feebleminded and Epileptics, Lena face impossible choices in hopes of reuniting with her daughter—and protecting the people, and the land, she has grown to love.]]>

Sold on a Monday 40216800 2 CHILDREN FOR SALE

The scrawled sign, peddling young siblings on a farmhouse porch, captures the desperation sweeping the country in 1931. It’s an era of breadlines, bank runs, and impossible choices.

For struggling reporter Ellis Reed, the gut-wrenching scene evokes memories of his family’s dark past. He snaps a photograph of the children, not meant for publication. But when the image leads to his big break, the consequences are devastating in ways he never imagined.

Haunted by secrets of her own, secretary Lillian Palmer sees more in the picture than a good story and is soon drawn into the fray. Together, the two set out to right a wrongdoing and mend a fractured family, at the risk of everything they value.

Inspired by an actual newspaper photo that stunned readers across the nation, this touching novel explores the tale within the frame and behind the lens—a journey of ambition, love, and the far-reaching effects of our actions.]]>

Here is a historical fiction story focusing on the desperation of poor families during the Great Depression and how the careless but unintentional actions of an ambitious reporter triggered a tragic series of events. Wifey is dabbling in witchcraft and her academic hubby finds her trinkets. Her plan to protect her husband's position backfires and all Hell breaks loose in their lives. No pun intended. There are twists and turns, quite creepy with an occasional laugh. Fritz Lieber wrote a lot of science fiction. Conjure Wife was quite entertaining!

But when her scheming mistress discovers the lump of a servant cowering in the kitchen is actually hiding a talent for little miracles, she demands Luzia use those gifts to better the family's social position.

At first, I scoffed at the idea of knowledge-hungry book eaters and brain-devouring mind eaters living amongst naive and vulnerable humans. I thought the premise seemed ridiculous. This book grew on me though. For one, it is very well written and that in itself made the far-fetched theme feel less so. Another reason was the well developed characters as well as their experiences in different families and classifications. Also, the story was inclusive without being pushy or biased. The family conflicts and fight for freedom/quality of life grows to an exciting climax. Towards the end, I was glued to this book. There were some grizzly events and descriptions that shoved me pretty far out of my comfort zone but I'm glad I stuck with it. There were other themes of loyalty, true family, and betrayal that made this a worthy and enjoyable book to read!

There were a lot of things I liked about this book, particularly in the 2nd half when the action was exciting. I didn't anticipate a coming of age romance and didn't enjoy that part. As Achilles and Petroclus aged, their story became more complex and volatile (and more interesting). This book has so many varying elements. I didn't like everything about it but I glad to have read a unique spin on the Greek Mythology. Tip: Reading an abridged version of The Iliad first helped me a lot.

This was a great idea for a story which takes place sometime after King Arthur's time. Our main characters are Britons - Axl and Beatrice, an elderly couple living in a strange village where a cursed mist keeps them from remembering details of their past. They struggle to bring to mind their own son who has left the village but they can't remember why. This leads them to begin a journey to other villages in hopes of finding him but along the way they run into three characters that come and go and come back again: an adolescent boy, a Saxon Warrior and an old Knight of King Arthur. There is competition as to who will kill the dragon responsible for the "anti-memory mist". From here there are twists, turns and inner turmoil amongst the characters. There are themes of honor, chivalry, oaths, betrayal and promises. My only complaint (and it's a big one for me) is that there was overly detailed and repetitive dialogue. IT'S REALLY BAD. I've read several books by Kazuo Ishiguro and did not have this complaint in them; it's unique to this book so perhaps he did it purposefully. I found it tedious and was eager to move on with the adventure instead of being stuck in conversations going round and round. But...the story is unique and surprising at times ... so if the extreme detail doesn't turn a reader off, it's definitely worth the read.

The Life She Was Given 32926258 From acclaimed author Ellen Marie Wiseman comes a vivid, daring novel about the devastating power of family secrets--beginning in the poignant, lurid world of a Depression-era traveling circus and coming full circle in the transformative 1950s.

On a summer evening in 1931, Lilly Blackwood glimpses circus lights from the grimy window of her attic bedroom. Lilly isn't allowed to explore the meadows around Blackwood Manor. She's never even ventured beyond her narrow room. Momma insists it's for Lilly's own protection, that people would be afraid if they saw her. But on this unforgettable night, Lilly is taken outside for the first time--and sold to the circus sideshow.

More than two decades later, nineteen-year-old Julia Blackwood has inherited her parents' estate and horse farm. For Julia, home was an unhappy place full of strict rules and forbidden rooms, and she hopes that returning might erase those painful memories. Instead, she becomes immersed in a mystery involving a hidden attic room and photos of circus scenes featuring a striking young girl.

At first, The Barlow Brothers' Circus is just another prison for Lilly. But in this rag-tag, sometimes brutal world, Lilly discovers strength, friendship, and a rare affinity for animals. Soon, thanks to elephants Pepper and JoJo and their handler, Cole, Lilly is no longer a sideshow spectacle but the circus's biggest attraction. . .until tragedy and cruelty collide. It will fall to Julia to learn the truth about Lilly's fate and her family's shocking betrayal, and find a way to make Blackwood Manor into a place of healing at last.

Moving between Julia and Lilly's stories, Ellen Marie Wiseman portrays two extraordinary, very different women in a novel that, while tender and heartbreaking, offers moments of joy and indomitable hope.]]>

Then, there is Julia, a less intense story at first, a young woman who over time learns about Lily in bits and pieces until it all comes together in a horrific surprising ending (with new beginnings!)

I loved this book. It's a well written page turner that kept me guessing. The circus antics and lingo were creepy, as were the townies! Julia's story was quieter to begin with but becomes quite suspenseful and powerful towards the end.

In addition to the traumas endured by Lilly and Julia, the author ties in the plight of animals who are forced to work for people's gain and treated inhumanely. This was never preachy or militant, but integrated seamlessly into the story and loosely based on factual occurrences in history. (See author's notes at the end).

Did your parents ever threaten to sell you to the circus? Mine didn't but I have heard the expression many times. A century ago, children who were born different were at risk not only from public ignorance but also from their own families who felt shame or something more sinister.

Well Lilly WAS sold to the circus after being kept secret in an attic for many years. From there the story of her life story includes fascinating experiences and adventures, unlikely friendships, and excitement of circus life. Yet, that life was also cruel and abusive at times which added to the trauma she endured already at home! The Perfect Child ended with no closure so I had to read the follow up short story. I think a full sequel with lots of details as Janie grew up would have worked better. Easy to read but also a really interesting topic of nature vs nurture. Was Janie's behavior a result of early trauma or was she the devil's spawn?!? I must read the sequel!

I was excited about this book when I learned it was coming to Netflix and wanted to read it before watching it. Now that I'm finished reading, I'm a bit disappointed. The scientific jargon was more than I anticipated and some of it felt rather forced. Either I'm just not familiar enough with physics to appreciate it or it was a lot of mumbo jumbo fiction without much real science to back it up. Either way, I did not enjoy it as much as I wanted to. The characters felt one dimensional and the Trisolarans were charicature-ish. I doubt I will read the trilogy but will see if the Netflix show fills in the gaps enough that it perks my interest.

The Clockmaker's Daughter 38530939 My real name, no one remembers. The truth about that summer, no one else knows.

In the summer of 1862, a group of young artists led by the passionate and talented Edward Radcliffe descends upon Birchwood Manor on the banks of the Upper Thames. Their plan: to spend a secluded summer month in a haze of inspiration and creativity. But by the time their stay is over, one woman has been shot dead while another has disappeared; a priceless heirloom is missing; and Edward Radcliffe’s life is in ruins.

Over one hundred and fifty years later, Elodie Winslow, a young archivist in London, uncovers a leather satchel containing two seemingly unrelated items: a sepia photograph of an arresting-looking woman in Victorian clothing, and an artist’s sketchbook containing the drawing of a twin-gabled house on the bend of a river.

Why does Birchwood Manor feel so familiar to Elodie? And who is the beautiful woman in the photograph? Will she ever give up her secrets?]]>

Where the Axe Is Buried 211934965 All systems fail. All societies crumble. All worlds end.

In the authoritarian Federation, there is a plot to assassinate and replace the President, a man who has downloaded his mind to a succession of new bodies to maintain his grip on power. Meanwhile, on the fringes of a Western Europe that has renounced human governance in favor of ostensibly more efficient, objective, and peaceful AI Prime Ministers, an experimental artificial mind is malfunctioning, threatening to set off a chain of events that may spell the end of the Western world.

As the Federation and the West both start to crumble, Lilia, the brilliant scientist whose invention may be central to bringing down the seemingly immortal President, goes on the run, trying to break out from a near-impenetrable web of Federation surveillance. Her fate is bound up with a worldwide group of others fighting against the global status quo: Palmer, the man Lilia left behind in London, desperate to solve the mystery of her disappearance; Zoya, a veteran activist imprisoned in the taiga, whose book has inspired a revolutionary movement; Nikolai, the President’s personal physician, who has been forced into more and more harrowing decisions as he navigates the Federation’s palace politics; and Nurlan, the hapless parliamentary staffer whose attempt to save his Republic goes terribly awry. And then there is Krotov, head of the Federation’s security services, whose plots, agents, and assassins are everywhere.

Following the success of his debut novel, The Mountain in the Sea, Ray Nayler launches readers into a thrilling near-future world of geopolitical espionage. A cybernetic novel of political intrigue, Where the Axe is Buried combines the story of a near-impossible revolutionary operation with a blistering indictment of the many forms of authoritarianism that suffocate human freedom.]]>

<![CDATA[Immune: A Journey Into the Mysterious System That Keeps You Alive]]> 57517317 A gorgeously illustrated deep dive into the immune system that will forever change how you think about your body, from the creator of the popular science YouTube channel Kurzgesagt—In a Nutshell

You wake up and feel a tickle in your throat. Your head hurts. You're mildly annoyed as you get the kids ready for school and dress for work yourself. Meanwhile, an epic war is being fought, just below your skin. Millions are fighting and dying for you to be able to complain as you head out the door.

So what, exactly, is your immune system?

Second only to the human brain in its complexity, it is one of the oldest and most critical facets of life on Earth. Without it, you would die within days. In Immune, Philipp Dettmer, the brains behind the most popular science channel on YouTube, takes readers on a journey through the fortress of the human body and its defenses. There is a constant battle of staggering scale raging within us, full of stories of invasion, strategy, defeat, and noble self-sacrifice. In fact, in the time you've been reading this, your immune system has probably identified and eradicated a cancer cell that started to grow in your body.

Each chapter delves into an element of the immune system, including defenses like antibodies and inflammation as well as threats like bacteria, allergies, and cancer, as Dettmer reveals why boosting your immune system is actually nonsense, how parasites sneak their way past your body's defenses, how viruses work, and what goes on in your wounds when you cut yourself.

Enlivened by engaging graphics and immersive descriptions, Immune turns one of the most intricate, interconnected, and confusing subjects—immunology—into a gripping adventure through an astonishing alien landscape. Immune is a vital and remarkably fun crash course in what is arguably, and increasingly, the most important system in the body.]]>

The cover (not the one shown) called to me when I wanted something Christmas related. Other than the fact that the murder takes place at Christmas, this isn't really a Christmas book at all. It did keep me guessing which of the family members, employees, visitors killed "dear old dad". The motive was pretty clear but how it was done was a good twist. Poirot's congenial, disarming approach with each character was fun! I'm giving 3.5 stars for the story and another .5 because I now want to read more of Agatha Christie's Poirot murder mysteries.

Little Monsters 62919906
Ken and Abby Gardner lost their mother when they were small and they have been haunted by her absence ever since. Their father, Adam, a brilliant oceanographer, raised them mostly on his own in his remote home on Cape Cod, where the attachment between Ken and Abby deepened into something complicated—and as adults their relationship is strained. Now, years later, the siblings lives are still deeply entwined. Ken is a successful businessman with political ambitions and a picture-perfect family and Abby is a talented visual artist who depends on her brother’s goodwill, in part because he owns the studio where she lives and works.

As the novel opens, Adam is approaching his seventieth birthday, staring down his mortality and fading relevance. He has always managed his bipolar disorder with medication, but he’s determined to make one last scientific breakthrough and so he has secretly stopped taking his pills, which he knows will infuriate his children. Meanwhile, Abby and Ken are both harboring secrets of their own, and there is a new person on the periphery of the family—Steph, who doesn’t make her connection known. As Adam grows more attuned to the frequencies of the deep sea and less so to the people around him, Ken and Abby each plan the elaborate gifts they will present to their father on his birthday, jostling for primacy in this small family unit.

Set in the fraught summer of 2016, and drawing on the biblical tale of Cain and Abel, Little Monsters is an absorbing, sharply observed family story by a writer who knows Cape Cod inside and out—its Edenic lushness and its snakes.]]>

<![CDATA[The Metamorphosis and Other Stories]]> 7723 The Metamorphosis, a story that is both harrowing and amusing, and a landmark of modern literature.

Bringing together some of Kafka’s finest work, this collection demonstrates the richness and variety of the author’s artistry. The Judgment, which Kafka considered to be his decisive breakthrough, and The Stoker, which became the first chapter of his novel Amerika, are here included. These two, along with The Metamorphosis, form a suite of stories Kafka referred to as “The Sons, and they collectively present a devastating portrait of the modern family.

Also included are In the Penal Colony, a story of a torture machine and its operators and victims, and A Hunger Artist, about the absurdity of an artist trying to communicate with a misunderstanding public. Kafka’s lucid, succinct writing chronicles the labyrinthine complexities, the futility-laden horror, and the stifling oppressiveness that permeate his vision of modern life.]]>

Middle of the Night 199026522 In the latest jaw-dropping thriller from New York Times bestselling author Riley Sager, a man must contend with the long-ago disappearance of his childhood best friend—and the dark secrets lurking just beyond the safe confines of his picture-perfect neighborhood.

The worst thing to ever happen on Hemlock Circle occurred in Ethan Marsh’s backyard. One July night, ten-year-old Ethan and his best friend and neighbor, Billy, fell asleep in a tent set up on a manicured lawn in a quiet, quaint New Jersey cul de sac. In the morning, Ethan woke up alone. During the night, someone had sliced the tent open with a knife and taken Billy. He was never seen again.

Thirty years later, Ethan has reluctantly returned to his childhood home. Plagued by bad dreams and insomnia, he begins to notice strange things happening in the middle of the night. Someone seems to be roaming the cul de sac at odd hours, and signs of Billy’s presence keep appearing in Ethan’s backyard. Is someone playing a cruel prank? Or has Billy, long thought to be dead, somehow returned to Hemlock Circle?

The mysterious occurrences prompt Ethan to investigate what really happened that night, a quest that reunites him with former friends and neighbors and leads him into the woods that surround Hemlock Circle. Woods where Billy claimed monsters roamed and where a mysterious institute does clandestine research on a crumbling estate.

The closer Ethan gets to the truth, the more he realizes that no place—be it quiet forest or suburban street—is completely safe. And that the past has a way of haunting the present.]]>

Enjoyable story and likable diverse characters. There were many unexpected twists. I thought I had it figured out towards the end but it was a surprise ending for me. I would have liked more about the Hawthorne Institute's activities. Also, the ending was a bit over-dramatic and implausible. 3 stars.

Adopting a fresh and original approach, each section covers a twenty-year span, to highlight the historical complexity of the conflict throughout successive decades. Each chapter starts with an examination of the relationships among people and events that marked particular years as historical moments in the evolution of the conflict, including the 1897 Basle Congress; the 1917 Balfour Declaration and British occupation of Palestine; and the 1947 UN Partition Plan and the war for Palestine.

Providing a clear and fair exploration of the main issues, Bunton explores not only the historical basis of the conflict, but also looks at how and why partition has been so difficult and how efforts to restore peace continue today.

<![CDATA[The Real RFK Jr.: Trials of a Truth Warrior]]> 120807494 An epic biography filled with drama, conflict, and surmounted challenges.

The Real RFK Jr.Ěýis an intimate biographical portrait examining the controversial activist's journey from anguish and addiction to becoming the country's leading environmental champion fighting government corruption, corporate greed, and a captured media. Written by his longtime colleague Dick Russell, the biography also exposes the misconceptions and explains the rationale behind Kennedy's campaign to protect public health.ĚýĚý
Ěý
Provided exclusive source material, including access to Kennedy’s unpublished writings and personal journals, the author conducted dozens of interviews with him as well as numerous friends and associates. Russell delves into everything from Kennedy’s sometimes death-defying river rafting adventures to his pioneering legal cases against polluters such as Smithfield Foods and Monsanto, while founding the world’s largest water protection group. The Real RFK Jr. also examines Kennedy’s pursuit of the truth about the assassinations of his father and uncle, the wrongful murder conviction of his cousin, and the false narratives around the COVID-19 pandemic.Ěý

A Gentleman in Moscow 34066798 The mega-bestseller with more than 2 million readers—Now a Paramount+ with Showtime series starring Ewan McGregor as Count Alexander Rostov

From the #1 New York Times-bestselling author of The Lincoln Highway and Rules of Civility, a beautifully transporting novel about a man who is ordered to spend the rest of his life inside a luxury hotel

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count’s endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.]]>

This was a wonderful story and so refreshing to have a positive male character for a change. The Count Alexander Rostov is a very charming, intellectual gentleman with impeccable manners along with an ornery streak like no other (which got him in trouble from the start). Talk about turning lemons into lemonade ..... His years in confinement at the Metropol Hotel were rich with friendship, love and memorable stories. Without the Count's positive attitude and love of life, the experience could have been starkly different. I loved every minute including the ending!]]>

Hidden Pictures 58938609 From Jason Rekulak, Edgar-nominated author of The Impossible Fortress, comes a wildly inventive spin on the classic horror story in Hidden Pictures, a creepy and warm-hearted mystery about a woman working as a nanny for a young boy with strange and disturbing secrets.

Fresh out of rehab, Mallory Quinn takes a job in the affluent suburb of Spring Brook, New Jersey as a babysitter for Ted and Caroline Maxwell. She is to look after their five-year-old son, Teddy.

Mallory immediately loves this new job. She lives in the Maxwell’s pool house, goes out for nightly runs, and has the stability she craves. And she sincerely bonds with Teddy, a sweet, shy boy who is never without his sketchbook and pencil. His drawings are the usual trees, rabbits, balloons. But one day, he draws something a man in a forest, dragging a woman’s lifeless body.

As the days pass, Teddy’s artwork becomes more and more sinister, and his stick figures steadily evolve into more detailed, complex, and lifelike sketches well beyond the ability of any five-year-old. Mallory begins to suspect these are glimpses of an unsolved murder from long ago, perhaps relayed by a supernatural force lingering in the forest behind the Maxwell’s house.

With help from a handsome landscaper and an eccentric neighbor, Mallory sets out to decipher the images and save Teddy—while coming to terms with a tragedy in her own past—before it’s too late.]]>

The Screwtape Letters 8130077
C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the unique vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to “Our Father Below.â€ At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C.S. LewisĚýgives us the correspondence of the wordly-wise devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. Oil and Marble 25898723
Michelangelo is a virtual unknown when he returns to Florence and wins the commission to carve what will become one of the most famous sculptures of all time: David. Even though his impoverished family shuns him for being an artist, he is desperate to support them. Living at the foot of his misshapen block of marble, Michelangelo struggles until the stone finally begins to speak. Working against an impossible deadline, he begins his feverish carving.

Meanwhile, Leonardo’s life is falling apart: he loses the hoped-for David commission; he can’t seem to finish any project; he is obsessed with his ungainly flying machine; he almost dies in war; his engineering designs disastrously fail; and he is haunted by a woman he has seen in the market—a merchant’s wife, whom he is finally commissioned to paint. Her name is Lisa, and she becomes his muse.

Leonardo despises Michelangelo for his youth and lack of sophistication. Michelangelo both loathes and worships Leonardo’s genius.

Oil and Marble is the story of their nearly forgotten rivalry. Storey brings early 16th-century Florence alive, and has entered with extraordinary empathy into the minds and souls of two Renaissance masters. The book is an art history thriller.

This book swept me away! Historical Fiction at its best! Imagine Michelangelo and Leonardo Di Vinci in the same town in the early 1500s with competing masterpieces in the making. Stephanie Story created a back story so vibrant that I had to keep looking things up to see if it was pure fiction or if it is based on something that really happened. There is a nice mix of both and some of the factual accounts were surprising to me. Art lovers, history buffs, or anyone who yearns for great story telling, Oil and Marble is fascinating and fun!

The Women 127305853 From the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes Kristin Hannah's The Women—at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided.

Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is over-whelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war, she meets—and becomes one of—the lucky, the brave, the broken, and the lost.

But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam.

The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.]]>

Coal River 25406912 The Plum Tree and What She Left Behind explores one young woman's determination to put an end to child labor in a Pennsylvania mining town.

As a child, Emma Malloy left isolated Coal River, Pennsylvania, vowing never to return. Now, orphaned and penniless at nineteen, she accepts a train ticket from her aunt and uncle and travels back to the rough-hewn community. Treated like a servant by her relatives, Emma works for free in the company store. There, miners and their impoverished families must pay inflated prices for food, clothing, and tools, while those who owe money are turned away to starve.

Most heartrending of all are the breaker boys Emma sees around the village--young children who toil all day sorting coal amid treacherous machinery. Their soot-stained faces remind Emma of the little brother she lost long ago, and she begins leaving stolen food on families' doorsteps, and marking the miners' bills as paid.

Though Emma's actions draw ire from the mine owner and police captain, they lead to an alliance with a charismatic miner who offers to help her expose the truth. And as the lines blur between what is legal and what is just, Emma must risk everything to follow her conscience.

An emotional, compelling novel that rings with authenticity--Coal River is a deft and honest portrait of resilience in the face of hardship, and of the simple acts of courage that can change everything.]]>

Lily Bart has no skills to speak of outside her charm and exquisite beauty. She has no inheritance and had to find ways to live in the luxury to which she had become accustomed. In the early 1900s, that was no easy task unless you married into wealth. Lily had offers but chose to live as a single socialite, often relying on the rich and powerful in NY to provide the things she wanted in exchange for her attendance and entertainment value at functions and excursions. The only man she was interested in was not a suitable match at that time. Over time, Lily's status starts to change due to her aging, having not married, money owed from speculating and bridge game gambling, and ultimately gossip among the socialites with whom she had been mingling. So begins her decline.

Edith Wharton never has disappointed me. I find her storytelling and writing style so elegant, witty, and quite ironic at times. The characters are vivid and relatable. Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed the beginning of this book and the storyline seemed fun, bouncing between the current summer and prior vacations. About a third of the way through though, eye rolls and yawns for me! I no longer cared and was annoyed by the repetition, particularly the cutesy banter between Poppy and Alex. I really tried to keep going but since I still had like 4 prior vacations to endure, I jumped to the last three chapters to see if it ended the way I expected it to. There was one detail I didn't expect but otherwise, very predictable. I admit that this is my least favorite genre and had it not been a bookclub read, I would have skipped it all together. I also do not like the overly simplified cover art that so many books in this genre have now. I expect all these books to be of the same quality. It's hard not to judge these books by their cover!

The Sicilian Inheritance 182486315 From bestselling author and award-winning journalist Jo Piazza, comes aĚýtransportingĚýnovel rooted inĚýthe author's ownĚýfamily history about a long-awaited trip to Sicily, a disputed inheritance, and a family secret that some will kill to protect . . .

Sara Marsala barely knows who she is anymore after the failure of her business and marriage.ĚýOn top of that, her beloved great-aunt Rosie passes away, leaving Sara bereft withĚýgrief. But Aunt Rosie's death also opens an escape from her life and a window into the past by way of a plane ticket to Sicily, a deed to a possibly valuable plot of land, and a bombshell family secret.ĚýRosie believes Sara's great-grandmother Serafina, the family matriarch who was left behind while her husband worked in America, didn’t die of illness as family lore has it . . . she was murdered.

Thus begins a twist-filled adventure that takes Sara all over the picturesque Italian countryside as she races to solve a mystery and prove her birthright. Flashing back to the past, we meet Serafina, a feisty and headstrong young woman in the early 1900s thrust into motherhood in her teens, who fought for a better life not just for herself but for all the women of her small village. Unsurprisingly it isn’t long before a woman challenging the status quo finds herself in danger.

As Sara discovers more about Serafina she also realizes she is coming head-to-head with the same menacing forces that took down her great-grandmother. At once an immersive multigenerational mystery and an ode to the undaunted heroism of everyday women, The Sicilian Inheritance is an atmospheric, page-turning delight.]]>

Inamorata 622340
In the tradition of Carter Beats the Devil and The Alienist—a historical page-turner and the debut of a spectacular young talent.

It is 1920s Philadelphia, a time when the feverish popular obsession with the paranormal is confronted by the inevitable ascendance of the scientific method. With everyone from Houdini to Arthur Conan Doyle weighing in on the existence of parapsychological phenomena, the media is as fixated on the sensational debate as scientists and would-be psychics. Indeed, in 1922, Scientific American offers five thousand dollars for evidence of "conclusive psychic manifestations."

Inspired by this real-life event, Inamorata follows Martin Finch, a twenty-three-year-old Harvard graduate student and member of Scientific American's investigative committee, on the case of a lifetime—an attempt to determine whether Mina Crawley, a beautiful Philadelphia socialite, is able to contact the spirit realm. In the tiny upstairs room of the Crawleys' elegant Rittenhouse Square townhouse, Finch is prepared to debunk a fraud. But instead the man of science breaks the cardinal rule of psychic investigation: Never fall in love with the medium...]]>

The Catcher in the Rye 5107 It's Christmas time and Holden Caulfield has just been expelled from yet another school...

Fleeing the crooks at Pencey Prep, he pinballs around New York City seeking solace in fleeting encounters—shooting the bull with strangers in dive hotels, wandering alone round Central Park, getting beaten up by pimps and cut down by erstwhile girlfriends. The city is beautiful and terrible, in all its neon loneliness and seedy glamour, its mingled sense of possibility and emptiness. Holden passes through it like a ghost, thinking always of his kid sister Phoebe, the only person who really understands him, and his determination to escape the phonies and find a life of true meaning.

The Catcher in the Rye is an all-time classic in coming-of-age literature- an elegy to teenage alienation, capturing the deeply human need for connection and the bewildering sense of loss as we leave childhood behind.

J.D. Salinger's (19192010) classic novel of teenage angst and rebellion was first published in 1951. The novel was included on Time's 2005 list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923. It was named by Modern Library and its readers as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. It has been frequently challenged in the court for its liberal use of profanity and portrayal of sexuality and in the 1950's and 60's it was the novel that every teenage boy wants to read.]]>

The Master and Margarita 117833 The first complete, annotated English Translation of Mikhail Bulgakov's comic masterpiece.

An audacious revision of the stories of Faust and Pontius Pilate, The Master and Margarita is recognized as one of the essential classics of modern Russian literature. The novel's vision of Soviet life in the 1930s is so ferociously accurate that it could not be published during its author's lifetime and appeared only in a censored edition in the 1960s. Its truths are so enduring that its language has become part of the common Russian speech.

One hot spring, the devil arrives in Moscow, accompanied by a retinue that includes a beautiful naked witch and an immense talking black cat with a fondness for chess and vodka. The visitors quickly wreak havoc in a city that refuses to believe in either God or Satan. But they also bring peace to two unhappy Muscovites: one is the Master, a writer pilloried for daring to write a novel about Christ and Pontius Pilate; the other is Margarita, who loves the Master so deeply that she is willing literally to go to hell for him. What ensues is a novel of inexhaustible energy, humor, and philosophical depth, a work whose nuances emerge for the first time in Diana Burgin's and Katherine Tiernan O'Connor's splendid English version.]]>

West With Giraffes 56449476 An emotional, rousing novel inspired by the incredible true story of two giraffes who made headlines and won the hearts of Depression-era America.

“Few true friends have I known and two were giraffes…

Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave.

It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to deliver Southern California’s first giraffes to the San Diego Zoo. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow. Inspired by true events, the tale weaves real-life figures with fictional ones, including the world’s first female zoo director, a crusty old man with a past, a young female photographer with a secret, and assorted reprobates as spotty as the giraffes.

Part adventure, part historical saga, and part coming-of-age love story, West with Giraffes explores what it means to be changed by the grace of animals, the kindness of strangers, the passing of time, and a story told before it’s too late.]]>

Speak 42673966 "Speak up for yourself—we want to know what you have to say."

From the first moment of her freshman year at Merryweather High, Melinda knows this is a big fat lie, part of the nonsense of high school. She is friendless, outcast, because she busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, so now nobody will talk to her, let alone listen to her. As time passes, she becomes increasingly isolated and practically stops talking altogether.

Only her art class offers any solace, and it is through her work on an art project that she is finally able to face what really happened at that terrible she was raped by an upperclassman, a guy who still attends Merryweather and is still a threat to her. Her healing process has just begun when she has another violent encounter with him. But this time Melinda fights back, refuses to be silent, and thereby achieves a measure of vindication.

A timeless novel about consent and finding the courage to speak up for yourself, the twentieth anniversary edition of the classic novel that has spoken to so many young adults now includes a new introduction by acclaimed writer, host, speaker, and cultural commentator Ashley C. Ford as well as an afterword by New York Times-bestselling author of All American Boys and Long Way Down, Jason Reynolds. This is such an important message for teens in a really well written story. Its a page turner as Melanie barely survives a painful freshman year in high school in a state of altered consciousness due to the trauma inflicted on her shortly before school began. Her growing inner strength and recognition that she does have supporters trying to help are encouraging. If I had one complaint it would be an overuse of teenage sarcasm. It's effective to a point but sometimes if felt like the author was trying to squeeze too many in and that didn't feel authentic to me. Overall, I really liked the book and am glad so many students and young adults have had access to it.

The Lord of the Rings 33 One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them

In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins.

From Sauron's fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, his power spread far and wide. Sauron gathered all the Great Rings to him, but always he searched for the One Ring that would complete his dominion.

When Bilbo reached his eleventy-first birthday he disappeared, bequeathing to his young cousin Frodo the Ruling Ring and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord, and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.

The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the Dwarf; Legolas the Elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider.]]>

Delve into the magical, unforgettable world of James Herriot, the world's most beloved veterinarian, and his menagerie of heartwarming, funny, and tragic animal patients.

For over forty years, generations of readers have thrilled to Herriot's marvelous tales, deep love of life, and extraordinary storytelling abilities. For decades, Herriot roamed the remote, beautiful Yorkshire Dales, treating every patient that came his way from smallest to largest, and observing animals and humans alike with his keen, loving eye.

In All Creatures Great and Small, we meet the young Herriot as he takes up his calling and discovers that the realities of veterinary practice in rural Yorkshire are very different from the sterile setting of veterinary school. Some visits are heart-wrenchingly difficult, such as one to an old man in the village whose very ill dog is his only friend and companion, some are lighthearted and fun, such as Herriot's periodic visits to the overfed and pampered Pekinese Tricki Woo who throws parties and has his own stationery, and yet others are inspirational and enlightening, such as Herriot's recollections of poor farmers who will scrape their meager earnings together to be able to get proper care for their working animals. From seeing to his patients in the depths of winter on the remotest homesteads to dealing with uncooperative owners and critically ill animals, Herriot discovers the wondrous variety and never-ending challenges of veterinary practice as his humor, compassion, and love of the animal world shine forth.

James Herriot's memoirs have sold 80 million copies worldwide, and continue to delight and entertain readers of all ages]]>

In a very heart-felt way, he conveys the message that life was hard in those days for veterinarians and for the farmers they served. I was particularly moved by how hard it was to lose a cow, horse, or pig...not always because of emotional attachment but because the farmer was dependant on the animal for his livelihood. Losing it to accident or illness would hurt the farmer and his family on different levels. In spite of the grueling life of country vets, there is time for joy, laughter, friendship....and love!

This series has been on my To Read list for a long time. I loved the TV series and admittantly mourned a bit when I finished the last episode. I found All Creatures Great and Small, the first book, to be a delight. Not only did some of the stories bring back memories of favorite episodes, but also enriched each of the characters that were so colorful already. Eccentric but lovable Sigfried, free spirited Tristan and vulnerable, ever suffering James (the Ben Stiller character of his day maybe?) Herriot's writing style is appropriately straightforward yet elegant making this a very easy and enjoyable read.

Dubliners 11012 I regret to see that my book has turned out un fiasco solenne.' James Joyce's disillusion with the publication of Dubliners in 1914 was the result of ten years battling with publishers, resisting their demands to remove swear words, real place names and much else, including two entire stories. Although only 24 when he signed his first publishing contract for the book, Joyce already knew its worth: to alter it in any way would 'retard the course of civilisation in Ireland'.

Joyce's aim was to tell the truth to create a work of art that would reflect life in Ireland at the turn of the last century and by rejecting euphemism, reveal to the Irish the unromantic reality the recognition of which would lead to the spiritual liberation of the country.

Each of the fifteen stories offers a glimpse of the lives of ordinary Dubliners a death, an encounter, an opportunity not taken, a memory rekindled and collectively they paint a portrait of a nation.]]>

How is it that these sad stories about frustrated, dysfunctional Dubliners are strangely beautiful? For me, it is what I visualize and felt while reading them. James Joyce told me just enough about the characters and setting to get me thinking about what people were feeling and the setting. Whether it be a boisterous pub, a fireside chat about politics, a viewing, an alcoholic in his kitchen, a creepy encounter in an open field, a lonely love struck teenager at a fair, an overbearing parent causing emotional pain to her child in a theater, and many more. Each story was unique but there were common themes throughout that gave me a painful realization of what life in Dublin was in the early 1900s and the all too common alcohol abuse that resulted. Long ago and far away these stories were written yet I think anyone can relate to how these characters must have felt in their situations. We all suffer the same feelings at times in our own lives but hopefully do not feel the same hopelessness and despair. I loved this book. I read it on my Kindle but will be buying it in hardback for my collection of favorite books.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

This is one of the best books I read in 2015. What a great story of survival! What I most enjoyed about it is the upbeat tone throughout. While Mark Whatney had setbacks and terrible loneliness and frustrations, he didn't lose hope for long and therefore the reader doesn't either! There was enough science and math in the book to make my average intelligence head spin! It didn't matter though. The story is for just about everyone and doesn't require that you always understand everything he is working out in his rocket scientist head!

I loved this story. I felt like I was wandering the streets of St Petersburg with the characters, hearing their conversations, feeling excited for them, and ultimately great sorrow for the despair of one of them. I read somewhere that if you like White Nights you will like more by Dostoyevsky. I did indeed enjoy White Nights, as sad a story as it was. I will say that by today's standards, if a man approached a young woman and poured his heart out bitterly in rhetorical questions like he did, she would likely run away for fear that he was deranged and a potential stalker. I resist the temptation to compare it with such an encounter in 2015 because I think Dostoyevsky painted a picture of an awkward romantic dreamer of his day; deserving of happiness but not able to fit in socially because of his self-loathing and terrible insecurities. He was his own worst enemy. It may be unlikely that an individual so socially inept could connect with another human being so quickly as he did with Nastenka. However, he was so desperate for human companionship and Nastenka was in need of immediate friendship and comfort. In a way, it was the perfect storm. She was a bright light in the midst of his dismal life and he comforted her broken heart at the very moment she needed it.

I loved this story. I felt like I was wandering the streets of St Petersburg with the characters, hearing their conversations, feeling excited for them, and ultimately great sorrow for the despair of one of them. Dostoyevsky obviously had insight into emotions and vulnerability. He also had the gift of being able to describe his characters' desperation in a way that read beautifully.

It's controversial because of the setting, accepted practices and language of the day, but unexpected insight and unconditional friendship prevails crossing racial and social class lines. A literary treasure! The Audible book narrated by Elijah Wood is superb ...really brings the story/characters to life!

After several books that disappointed me, along comes an unpredictable story and simple, elegant writing style that matched my preference so well that the book could have been dedicated to ME! (o: Seriously, this is an unusual story that starts at a major turning point in the main character's (Kitty Fane) life and then jumps back and then forward to an unexpected conclusion. I shed some tears for the characters (except Charlie!) but there were also uplifting elements (the nuns) and emotional growth in Kitty that left me feeling very satisfied in the end. This is one of my favorite books to date and my first Maugham. I will read more of his books without a doubt.

What a light hearted, thoroughly enjoyable play. I smiled through each act and admired the clever dialog throughout. My eyes rolled occasionally over the proper etiquette of the day but it was just as amusing because Oscar Wilde, a bit ahead of his time, seemed to be poking fun of it as well. To Kill a Mockingbird 22024583 "Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."

A lawyer's advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of Harper Lee's classic novel - a black man charged with the rape of a white girl. Through the young eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores with exuberant humour the irrationality of adult attitudes to race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s. The conscience of a town steeped in prejudice, violence and hypocrisy is pricked by the stamina of one man's struggle for justice. But the weight of history will only tolerate so much.

"To Kill A Mockingbird" became both an instant bestseller and a critical success when it was first published in 1960. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and was later made into an Academy Award-winning film.]]>

The Devil in the White City 5711242
Burnham overcame tremendous obstacles and tragedies as he organized the talents of Frederick Law Olmsted, Charles McKim, Louis Sullivan, and others to transform swampy Jackson Park into the White City, while Holmes used the attraction of the great fair and his own satanic charms to lure scores of young women to their deaths. What makes the story all the more chilling is that Holmes really lived, walking the grounds of that dream city by the lake.

The Devil in the White City draws the reader into a time of magic and majesty, made all the more appealing by a supporting cast of real-life characters, including Buffalo Bill, Theodore Dreiser, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Edison, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, and others. Erik Larson’s gifts as a storyteller are magnificently displayed in this rich narrative of the master builder, the killer, and the great fair that obsessed them both.]]>

Homegoing 49985946
Effia and Esi are born into different villages in eighteenth-century Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman and lives in comfort in the palatial rooms of Cape Coast Castle. Unbeknownst to Effia, her sister, Esi, is imprisoned beneath her in the castle’s dungeons, sold with thousands of others into the Gold Coast’s booming slave trade, and shipped off to America, where her children and grandchildren will be raised in slavery. One thread of Homegoing follows Effia’s descendants through centuries of warfare in Ghana, as the Fante and Asante nations wrestle with the slave trade and British colonization. The other thread follows Esi and her children into America. From the plantations of the South to the Civil War and the Great Migration, from the coal mines of Pratt City, Alabama, to the jazz clubs and dope houses of twentieth-century Harlem, right up through the present day, Homegoing makes history visceral, and captures, with singular and stunning immediacy, how the memory of captivity came to be inscribed in the soul of a nation.

Of Mice and Men 890 “I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that's why.

They are an unlikely pair: George is "small and quick and dark of face"; Lennie, a man of tremendous size, has the mind of a young child. Yet they have formed a "family," clinging together in the face of loneliness and alienation. Laborers in California's dusty vegetable fields, they hustle work when they can, living a hand-to-mouth existence. But George and Lennie have a plan: to own an acre of land and a shack they can call their own.

While the powerlessness of the laboring class is a recurring theme in Steinbeck's work of the late 1930s, he narrowed his focus when composing Of Mice and Men, creating an intimate portrait of two men facing a world marked by petty tyranny, misunderstanding, jealousy, and callousness. But though the scope is narrow, the theme is universal: a friendship and a shared dream that makes an individual's existence meaningful.

A unique perspective on life's hardships, this story has achieved the status of timeless classic due to its remarkable success as a novel, a Broadway play, and three acclaimed films.]]>

Treasure Island 295 Treasure Island has never been surpassed. From the moment young Jim Hawkins first encounters the sinister Blind Pew at the Admiral Benbow Inn until the climactic battle for treasure on a tropic isle, the novel creates scenes and characters that have fired the imaginations of generations of readers. Written by a superb prose stylist, a master of both action and atmosphere, the story centers upon the conflict between good and evil - but in this case a particularly engaging form of evil. It is the villainy of that most ambiguous rogue Long John Silver that sets the tempo of this tale of treachery, greed, and daring. Designed to forever kindle a dream of high romance and distant horizons, Treasure Island is, in the words of G. K. Chesterton, 'the realization of an ideal, that which is promised in its provocative and beckoning map; a vision not only of white skeletons but also green palm trees and sapphire seas.' G. S. Fraser terms it 'an utterly original book' and goes on to write: 'There will always be a place for stories like Treasure Island that can keep boys and old men happy.']]> 352 Robert Louis Stevenson 0753453800 Beth 5 best-of-the-best 3.84 1882 Treasure Island

A book club I belong was reading this so I decided to join in but my expectation was that it would feel like a kids book and that pirates wouldn't interest me at all. My experience was the opposite. I loved the writing style, the story which was VERY exciting, and the characters were really quite interesting. I read the Kindle version and had fun highlighting all the "pirate talk" that became popular due to the popularity of this book. I find it interesting that so many students who have had to read this book for school found it a complete bore. Maybe I would have too when I was a teenager and I suppose it is even more the case today because books are more edgy and dark that they used to be, even in the young adult genre. This book is tame in comparison to some but what a riveting adventure! There is an epigraph at the beginning that begins "To the hesitating purchaser" which is the equivalent of the teasers we see on bock jackets/back covers today. His targeted audience was young average boys and he was spot on because the book quickly gained notoriety. I read some background on the book as well and found out that Robert Louis Stevenson was inspired by a map/imaginative story that his girlfriend's son had made. The two of them worked together to begin the process of writing Treasure Island. While I read most of my books on Kindle, I do buy hard bound copies of books I rate 5 stars and there are not too many of them. This book will have a place on my shelf. Highly recommended.

Ugh. Can't say I enjoyed this one much. There were exciting moments but a lot of yammering about minute details that made me glaze over and lose focus. I wanted to read a novel written before 1800 and thought an adventure story would be a good choice. Robinson Crusoe came off as an arrogant jerk but I realize he was a man of those times and its not fair to apply today's standards. The element I enjoyed the most was his spiritual growth over time in spite of his isolation. I think I will skip his further adventures as I hear that book was not as revered as the first.
