The unforgettable story of World War II is told through the words of those who lived it--both on the battlefield and the home front--creating a dramatic tapestry of the wartime experience. Personal writings and recollections of Roosevelt, Hitler, and Patton, as well as letters composed by soldiers at battle and diaries of women serving in the military at home, present an absorbing narrative that tells the entire history of the war from several perspectives. Hundreds of images capture fateful moments of triumph and defeat that defined the era, including rare photographs and artifacts, many never-before-seen from private collections that are placed in context with more famous photographs from the period. More than 20 authoritative National Geographic maps detail military movements and decisive battles in the European and Pacific theaters of war. These incredible, first-person stories, amazing moments of heroism, compelling imagery, and illuminating maps bring the entire history of World War II to life in vivid detail.]]> 352 Neil Kagan 1426209703 Nikki 0 own-but-won-t-read-entirely 4.36 2012 Eyewitness to World War II: Unforgettable Stories and Photographs From History's Greatest Conflict

<![CDATA[The Historical Atlas of New York City: A Visual Celebration of Nearly 400 Years of New York City's History]]> 29845
The rich and eminently browsable visual guide to the history of New York, in an all-new
second edition

The Historical Atlas of New York City, second edition, takes us, neighborhood by neighborhood, through four hundred years of Gotham's rich past, describing such crucial events as the city's initial settlement of 270 people in thirty log houses; John Jacob Astor's meteoric rise from humble fur trader to the richest, most powerful man in the city; and the fascinating ethnic mixture that is modern Queens. The full-color maps, charts, photographs, drawings, and mini-essays of this encyclopedic volume also trace the historical development and cultural relevance of such iconic New York thoroughfares as Fifth Avenue, Wall Street, Park Avenue, and Broadway. This thoroughly updated edition brings the Atlas up to the present, including three all-new two-page spreads on Rudolph Giuliani's New York, the revival of Forty-second Street, and the rebuilding of Ground Zero.

A fascinating chronicle of the life of a metropolis, the handsome second edition of The Historical Atlas of New York City provides a vivid and unique perspective on the nation's cultural capital.]]>

A Dictionary of First Names 7713528 information the authors provide. Under the entry for "Audrey," for example, we learn of the sixth century saint of that name--who died from a neck tumor, divine punishment for her youthful delight in fine necklaces--from whom the word "tawdry" it referred originally to the cheap jewelry
sold at fairs in her honor (St. Audrey eventually being compressed into "tawdry"). The authors reveal that the name "Colleen," a very popular name among Irish Americans, is in fact never given as a first name in Ireland; that the name "Wendy" didn't exist until J.M. Barrie invented it for Peter Pan ;
that "Algernon" originally meant "moustached" and was a nickname among the predominantly clean-shaven Norman French; and that the "th" in our spelling of "Anthony" comes from an erroneous confusion with the Greek word for flower, anthos .
Perhaps more important, this dictionary is an authoritative reference. Indeed, no other handbook provides a fraction of the information found here. Typical entries provide the linguistic and ethnic root of a name. "Jennifer," for instance, is a Cornish form of "Guinevere," which in turn is
the French version of a Welsh name combining gwen , white, fair, smooth, and hwyfar , smooth, soft. Most entries also include the non-English form or cognate of a name. The name "Geronimo" is an Italian 0ognate of Jerome, whose Dutch cognate, "Jeroen," the authors point out, was the most popular male
name in Holland in 1981. In addition, entries include diminutives and pet forms.
A companion to the authors' A Dictionary of Surnames , this informative reference offers a goldmine of curious facts to delight browsers of every age as well as a wealth of inspiration for prospective parents. It is an ideal baby shower gift.]]>

"Sometimes coloring is just coloring. To put crayons to paper and create a rainbow of marks and swaths is relaxing, playful, and maybe even artistically satisfying. But sometimes coloring is more. To put colored crayons, markers, or pencils to paper is to create a pathway to the numinous. Coloring invites the body and the senses into an experience of inner stillness. While the hand moves, the mind and the body slow down. The heart and the ears open carving a space for rich silence and an opportunity for God to speak." —Sybil MacBeth, author of Praying in Color: Drawing a New Path to God]]>

The complete Library Journal review:
In the works since 2002, Wilson's compilation is the most comprehensive guide now available to Christmas-, Hanukkah-, Kwanzaa-, and New Year's themed TV. The book appears to be a thematic expansion of her 2009 guide, The Christmas TV Companion, which surpassed Diane Werts's 2005 title, Christmas on Television. Here, entries are alphabetized first by program name, then by episode title. Each details year, director, and production staff, with a synopsis of program contents. Although it focuses solely on U.S. programming, it offers an engaging read for pop-culture enthusiasts and American television history buffs. Savannah Schroll Guz, formerly with Smithsonian Libs., Washington, DC --Library Journal]]>

This is a dangerous book, which has already caused me to add some old tv series and movies to my Netflix and instant-watching queues and, even though it's not yet the season, to watch Christmas episodes of Family Ties and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. There's a lot listed here that I'll never watch (either because it's unavailable to someone who doesn't have a million cable channels, or because I'm not interested) but there's plenty of information for anyone who's at all interested in Christmas film and video.

writers, their houses, and the landscapes that inspired them, as well as a wealth of curious information and entertaining anecdotes. Take a tour of Poets' Corner, in Westminster Abbey, where you can find Chaucer's canopied tomb, a monument to Shakespeare with lines from The Tempest , the grave of
Dickens, and tablets to Dylan Thomas, T.S. Eliot, and W.H. Auden, among many others. Read how the Cumbrian Lake District's breathtaking scenery inspired the "Lake Poets" Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southey, and how Keats' "Ode to a Grecian Urn" was written after he saw the Athenian sculptures at the
British Museum. Walk through Chelsea to see where of A.A. Milne, Mark Twain, and Bram Stoker lived. Or travel off the beaten path, to Liverpool, for instance, where bankruptcy led Washington Irving to write the great American classic Rip Van Winkle , or to Muckross, where the author of Baron
Munchausen , himself a spinner of tall tales, conned a landowner into buying property planted with samples of rich ore, or to Near Sawrey, where Beatrix Potter owned a seventeenth-century farmhouse.
Arranged for easy reference, with maps and an index of writers, The Oxford Illustrated Literary Guide to Great Britain and Ireland will help readers experience the richness of this great literary heritage.]]>

Meanwhile, I can use the author index to look up "homes and haunts," as the Library of Congress puts it, of any British or Irish writer I'm reading, or to look up any location in the Brirish Isles where a writer may have lived for a time. It's illustrated with many black and white photographs of interiors, exteriors, and landscapes, and also has numerous beautiful full-page color photographs of such scenes as Derwent Water in the Lake District and the Bodleian Library with a light dusting of snow. review:
This book came from our health insurance plan. It goes symptom by symptom with self-care suggestions, flow charts on when to see the doctor, etc. Although there are several reliable websites on which to research serious conditions, this book is a great place to begin checking on symptoms because it will not scare you to death with obscure conditions you "might" have. The focus is on self-care and prevention, which suits me.

<![CDATA[A Dictionary of Twentieth-Century World History (Oxford Quick Reference)]]> 211907 Author Jan Palmowski combines full international coverage with detailed entries for every country in the world.
Some of the special features of this volume are the biographies of such world leaders as Stalin, Kennedy, Thatcher, Yeltsin, Mandela, Rabin, and Netanyahu and the coverage of political events and movements from the rise and demise of communism to the collapse of the Berlin Wall, and from the end
of apartheid to the Whitewater scandal. Key battles are highlighted from Yprès to the Gulf War campaign to the Bosnian Civil War and events such as the Chernobyl disaster. Comprehensive attention is paid to major treaties and political agreements from Versailles to Maastricht, and from the
Anglo-Irish Agreement to the Dayton Accords. Useful tables including lists of office-holders for countries and organizations and winners of the Nobel Peace Prize are also provided.
A Dictionary of Twentieth-Century World History is an invaluable reference work for student, teachers, and anyone with an interest in the major figures and events of our modern world.]]>

Rather Brit-centric, but still useful. For instance, you'll find many British politicians you may never have heard of, but not Sam Rayburn or Harold Ickes. Although, having lived through half of it, I'm fairly well-versed in the twentieth century, this dictionary is exhaustive enough in terms of world history that I will hold on to it.

(Another reference book in my Shelf-Clearing Project). This is a pretty old, mass-market paperback, and the paper is beginning to deteriorate; the binding is stiff enough to make the print near the signature hard to read. I would hope there was a hardcover edition at one time; I'll be looking for one at library booksales, unless I come across a similar book that's a little more up-to-date. The entries, although much briefer than those in HarperCollins Reader's Encyclopedia of American Literature, seem reliable and of course, its focus on world literature rather than works only in English or from the Western Hemisphere is extremely useful. I'll hold on to this relic until I find a better equivalent.

<![CDATA[The HarperCollins Reader's Encyclopedia of American Literature]]> 638599 1126 George B. Perkins 006019815X Nikki 5
As a test, I looked up Edward Albee, since my theater-major daughter is spending a lot of her semester on The Zoo Story and The American Dream. Albee merited slightly more than a full (2 column) page in a signed article which gave a brief biography, mentioned all his works that I knew of and some I didn't, and discussed some of the major works in incisive paragraphs. A biography is even suggested for those interested.

In other entries on the same two pages, I learned about the primary stage adapter of Uncle Tom's Cabin, George L. Aiken; the publisher of the first complete Bible printed in America (Robert Aitken, and not until 1782!); that the author of "Backward, turn backward, O Time, in thy flight" was probably a Mainer (Elizabeth Chase Akers, who worked for the Portland Transcript and Daily Advertiser); Zoe Akins, an early 20th-century playwright who also wrote the screenplay for Show Boat; and a bit about Bronson Alcott and his educational theories. Lest you think that the Reader's Encyclopedia only has entries for people, there was also one for Al Aaraaf, a poem by Edgar Allan Poe about an Arabian demi-paradise. Helpfully, works which have their own articles are denoted by printing them in all caps, as are other literary figures, terms, and schools when mentioned.

In a household headed by two literature majors (English and Russian), with our daughter having a degree in film and now pursuing one in theater, it's not surprising that we have many, probably too many, literary encyclopedias and other reference works. But this one will stay.]]>

Another reference book on the first shelf in my Shelf-Clearing Project. This one is definitely a keeper. The original Reader's Encyclopedia has been a standard since its publication in 1962; this is an update of HarperCollins' 1991 edition. I was pleased to see that it includes writers from all over the Americas who use languages other than English; I wouldn't have thought to look in this book for Garcia Marquez, Allende, and so on.

This is the sort of book that makes me wish my kids were still little. It describes how to home-school your children starting with infancy and going through high school, whether or not they also attend a regular school. The method described in this book is about as far from John Holt/Summerhill "unschooling" as you can get, but it's also not about sitting your kids down with a bunch of worksheets and anti-evolution tracts. If you are at all interested in homeschooling or supplementing your child's education, this book will give you a lot of good ideas.

This is another dangerous book. Not only did I spot a number (and I mean a large number) of books that I'd like to sample, but I was reminded of several authors whose work I enjoyed so long ago that I have forgotten the plots and whodunnit and could very well read it again. I bought this from a used bookseller because I heard the author (who now writes a couple of her own mystery series)speak at our local library.

I really need to try some recipes from this book, which covers primarily Macedonia, northern Greece, Turkey, northern Syria, and the Republic of Georgia. A few call for unusual ingredients, but most would be easily sourced in any decent supermarket. It's probably just fear of the unfamiliar that keeps me from making Zucchinis Stuffed with Bulgur, Tomatoes and Hot Pepper (also includes ground lamb or beef but I suspect you could leave that out for a meatless dish)or Adzharian-Style Green Beans with Cinnamon-Yogurt Sauce (especially now that Greek yogurt is so easily found.)

So, I have a small collection of Junior League cookbooks, and this is one of them. There's a section of "Down Home" recipes (Southern cooking) and, as usual, a lot of appetizers/cocktail party food, a segment of cooking I always find a challenge. So even though it doesn't rate one of the few spots on my pantry shelf, I'm keeping it in reserve. It was interesting to note the number of recipes that specified a certain brand of ingredient; also, that in the 15 years between Little Rock Cooks and this one's publication, Junior Leaguers evidently stopped referring to themselves as "Mrs. John Smith" in favor of "Mary Jones Smith."
