review:
It's the first book of this universe that I'm reading and I can't wait to learn more about it. The way the political events are presented is intriguing and the main characters give you a sense of Sherlock Holmes, due to the fact that they always find the smartest way to outrun their enemies. The king of Sherlocks of course is Seldon (I don't know how his name is written in English, I read it in greek), the psycho-historian who predicts the time period of the fall and the uprising of the Galactic empire, using statistics and mass psychology. I would like to say many things about the characters and the way the political problems are tackled, but I'm gonna keep it simple and say, this is a classic sci-fi book recommended to be read by anyone. This book was much more easily read than I expected it to be. I expected it to contain complicated values and ideas, but Isaac is using quotes and facts and creates an amazing plot out of strategically settled political/warlike quarrels.

Animal Farm 170448 Librarian's note: There is an Alternate Cover Edition for this edition of this book here.

A farm is taken over by its overworked, mistreated animals. With flaming idealism and stirring slogans, they set out to create a paradise of progress, justice, and equality. Thus the stage is set for one of the most telling satiric fables ever penned Ca razor-edged fairy tale for grown-ups that records the evolution from revolution against tyranny to a totalitarianism just as terrible.
When Animal Farm was first published, Stalinist Russia was seen as its target. Today it is devastatingly clear that wherever and whenever freedom is attacked, under whatever banner, the cutting clarity and savage comedy of George Orwells masterpiece have a meaning and message still ferociously fresh.]]>

I found the analogies really interesting, however, I seldom read books that elaborate on political subjects. I read this book because it is a classic, and I have as a new year's resolution to read more of the classics.

Many parts of the story had me scared that some analogy of this book has existed/or exists in our human history, a thing I hadn't thought before. We read the story from questionable narration--the animals who follow the leader blindly-- and because of that, I had to remind myself that most of the sentences I read were, each, a lie.

This book makes me more curious about world war history, and that alone is commendable, for my interest in non-fiction is very limited.]]>

This eponymous comic became an instant hit when it went live on The Oatmeal.com and was liked on Facebook by 700,000 fans. Now fans will have a keepsake book of this comic to give and to keep.

In My Dog: The Paradox, Inman discusses the canine penchant for rolling in horse droppings, chasing large animals four times their size, and acting recklessly enthusiastic through the entirety of their impulsive, lovable lives. Hilarious and heartfelt, My Dog:?The Paradox eloquently illustrates the complicated relationship between man and dog.

We will never know why dogs fear hair dryers, or being baited into staring contests with cats, but as Inman explains, perhaps we love dogs so much because their lives arent lengthy, logical, or deliberate, but an explosive paradox composed of fur, teeth, and enthusiasm.]]>

Elephants are gray. Pigs are pink. Only the chameleon has no color of his own. He is purple like the heather, yellow like a lemon, even black and orange striped like a tiger! Then one day a chameleon has an idea to remain one color forever by staying on the greenest leaf he can find. But in the autumn, the leaf changes from green to yellow to red . . . and so does the chameleon. When another chameleon suggests they travel together, he learns that companionship is more important than having a color of his own. The Tale of Genji 7048 The Tale of Genji Mr. Amano brings his considerable talent to retelling one of the most famous of Japanese myths: written by Murasaki Shikibu shortly after 1000 AD and considered by most scholars to be the first novel ever written, The Tale of Genji is the story of the romantic adventures of Genji, the amazingly handsome prince and his many romantic conquests. Told through stunning paintings, Mr. Amano brings this classic story to life for a new generation.

As one of the most respected stories of all time, The Tale of Genji holds a worldwide place of honor among lovers of myth and legend.

Will appeal to the legions of Vampire Hunter D fans worldwide, as well as fans of his work on Sandman (written by New York Times-bestselling author Neil Gaiman) and Wolverine (with award-winning author Greg Rucka).]]>

During her journey, Moana meets the once-mighty demi-god Maui and together they traverse the open ocean on an action-packed adventure, encountering enormous fiery creatures and impossible odds. The traditions that are portrayed, they are still held or some of them were held in the past ages in Fiji and other nearby Islands. I didn't think that this book would awaken my interest so much that I would later look up more about the tattoo traditions, the navigation ships and the British explorer Cook, his findings and his death. As an art-sensitive person myself, I was absolutely astonished by the character designs and the thought process that led to the final 3d sculptures. I also found the narrative much more informative than a couple of other artbooks I've checked on. Maybe it's only because it is an animated movie, but this book gives you an almost complete view of the "making of", the obstacles, and the achievements. (I say almost, meaning the music, which is the other memorable part of the movie, apart from the art, which cannot be explained in a book)

I paid specific attention to the details that were initially to be done differently in the movie, like the character design of Maui, that was to be drawn smaller or with no hair. Some of those details and more, gave me another perspective on the movie and I got a taste on what could/would be done differently and why.

My favourite part I think is the character design of Te Ka, the lava monster and Te fiti, because the consept art and mechanisms (of Te Ka's fighting for example) touched my artistic heart (and the teary eyes of Te Fiti could easily bring me to tears as well).

Summarizing my review, I want to suggest this book to ANY person who loves character art and location art, and especially someone who is fascinating by disney artists and animation and wants to expand their artistic palette. Also to anyone who likes the movie and wants to learn more of its roots and creation process.]]>

An amazing artbook, kept me looking through every image scrutinizing the color and the lines and occupied me more than I originally thought it would. Although I suspected it, I never realized the amount of research and the long trips required to be done beforehand. The transformation the art team has been through, by the interaction with the Polynesian people, is apparent on their art and makes you believe the movie is alive and true, as it has kept its authenticity.

An overall interesting story with Seldon's plans staying in motion since the first book "Foundation". I'm reading them in publication order, so this is the second book from the series I've read. It isn't as interesting for me as the first book, and to be honest around the middle of it it got me somehow bored, but the plot twist in the end with the Mule being one whom we have known and been following in his journeys all along woke me up. I love that ending and makes me want to keep on reading the series. If you liked the first book then I recommend you this one as well.

Pride and Prejudice 1885 Pride and Prejudice has remained one of the most popular novels in the English language. Jane Austen called this brilliant work "her own darling child" and its vivacious heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, "as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print." The romantic clash between the opinionated Elizabeth and her proud beau, Mr. Darcy, is a splendid performance of civilized sparring. And Jane Austen's radiant wit sparkles as her characters dance a delicate quadrille of flirtation and intrigue, making this book the most superb comedy of manners of Regency England.

A book I didn't read in my maternal language that I liked quite a lot. Not exactly my style, since I enjoy more fantasy and less history usually, but it was a good story as a break from my reading habits. I liked the characters, even though sometimes I felt that they were one-sided. (Maybe I felt wrong, I just see it this way usually when I read romance..but still, I read it a long time ago, so I don't remember exactly how I felt those days)

Now recognized as a timeless classic, this introduction to the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, the wizard Gandalf, Gollum, and the spectacular world of Middle-earth recounts of the adventures of a reluctant hero, a powerful and dangerous ring, and the cruel dragon Smaug the Magnificent. The text in this 372-page paperback edition is based on that first published in Great Britain by Collins Modern Classics (1998), and includes a note on the text by Douglas A. I am a huge fan of the hobbit movie series and I really enjoyed the book because of that. I understand the environmental and historical context in which this book was written (really old), a fact that makes me appreciate the book even more. I've read enough things about Tolkien to know that he was a genius of his era. Love the book and the whole franchise.

review:
As a star wars fan of the new trilogy and a lover of the arts as well, I really enjoyed the art of the last jedi as a whole. The book contains details about the artistic background of the movie and the thought process of the artists, as well as the decisions the producers/screenwriters took for the final implementations on the film. I mostly liked the first concepts of the characters' clothing designs in general, as also the armor design of the red soldiers on the throne hall of Snoke. As it may concern the art of scenery, I adored every work this book contains about Canto Bight, even if the scene turn out to be a disappointment for most of the people on the movie. The book contains amazing art in high quality that will amaze any art lover like me. Totally worth its price, according to my personal opinion.

The four stars are for the stories I mostly enjoyed and found scientifically appealing which were "Understand", "Story of your life" and "Liking what you see: A documentary". I loved the futuristic thinking in these stories, while the others (except for the short one) were either violating the rules of genetics (seventy-two letters) or I found too sad or boring. Especially the religious ones weren't satisfying to read (hell is the absence of god) since I felt the inevitability in a world where the rules don't make sense. Maybe a second read would change my mind, but for now this is my opinion. The Understand story reminds me of the movie "Lucy", maybe it was inspired by it, I do not know. The story of your life is of course the beautiful movie "Arrival" and what made me buy this book in the first place

But Ender is not the only result of the experiment. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway almost as long. Ender's two older siblings, Peter and Valentine, are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. While Peter was too uncontrollably violent, Valentine very nearly lacks the capability for violence altogether. Neither was found suitable for the military's purpose. But they are driven by their jealousy of Ender, and by their inbred drive for power. Peter seeks to control the political process, to become a ruler. Valentine's abilities turn more toward the subtle control of the beliefs of commoner and elite alike, through powerfully convincing essays. Hiding their youth and identities behind the anonymity of the computer networks, these two begin working together to shape the destiny of Earth-an Earth that has no future at all if their brother Ender fails.]]>

The Night Circus 31114367 'What kind of circus is only open at night?'

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. The black sign, painted in white letters that hangs upon the gates, reads:
Opens at Nightfall
Closes at Dawn

As dusk shifts to twilight, tiny lights begin to flicker all over the tents, as though the whole of the circus is covered in fireflies. When the tents are aglow, sparkling against the night sky, the sign lights up:
Le Cirque des Rves
The Circus of Dreams.

The gates shudder and unlock, seemingly by their own volition. They swing outward, inviting the crowd inside.
Now the circus is open.
Now you may enter.

Been wanting to read circus-related books for a while, and I can say I'm satisfied with this one.
This was the most circus book I could have hoped for, I presume.

I miscalculated how long it would take me to finish the story. The way it was written, with short sentences that painted a picture better than they described an event, was at first very fun and easy to follow. The images were easy to come to mind, like I was watching a movie.

However, as the story kept progressing (as the pages kept turning- because I couldn't grasp if the story itself was progressing, or it was a series of eerie short stories glued together in a way that I myself should find out how they worked together as a whole), I found it harder and harder to concentrate on what I was reading. I'm not sure if it's the language barrier (of English not being my mother tongue), if the writing style confused me after such repetitions (at first I had hoped that the style would change in a more active form, so that the way the story was narrated would make me care more, and the atmospheric writing was simply there at the beginning so it would help me immerse easier in the story), or finally if the story itself wasn't fleshed out by the author (if the author doesn't know what story they want to tell, the reader can be easily confused; the known saying "if you can't persuade them, then confuse them").

Till the middle of the book I had wanted to give it 5 stars. It was beautiful, in a way that I didn't believe a book could be. After the half I struggled to finish the book, some days even founding excuses to avoid reading at all. When I say that I don't prefer big books, it is precisely because some stories can be told with fewer words and will have the same, if not more of a positive reaction. Too much of a very good thing, might result in less than favourable results. Especially if there isn't an event to disrupt the currents and make the reader wake up and keep reading with renewed interest.

I ordered the Phantomwise Tarot created by the author (*?*?)
I'd like to learn a couple of things about what the cards mean now that I have a story as a background for it.]]>

I inhaled this book in two sittings, and it felt like I lived with them and a part of me died with them.

Certainly a book that will get movie adaptations (if they haven't been confirmed already).

I wonder what the prequel will talk about...I don't know if I'm ready for more tears.

The first time I officially listened to the story was, I believe, around two summers ago, when I listened to the English audiobook classic horror stories. Now a group of Greeks has launched an audiobook app called 'Bookvoice' and I bought the translated Frankenstein title in order to remind myself some details of the story I missed, because English is not my mother language.

The narration was exquisite.

It is a story that will forever trouble me because it deals with one's passion to challenge the current borders of medicine and technology and move them one step further; it deals with the endless ambitions of genius minds, minds which hunger for genuine knowledge and achievements; minds that deeply believe they can help humanity progress and take that step to the beyond, a journey to the very unknown.

But, what's more, it deals with the crushing of these same dreams, the unforgiving hand of (call it) fate, the moment then reality cuts on your daydreaming just to remind you that no matter what you do, you with eventually fail miserably.

To me, Frankenstein is more than a classic horror story, a goth historical drama about a scientific experiment gone wrong. Frankenstein is a story of mental resilience, the persistence of one's mind to achieve something bigger than the world one knows. Frankenstein to me is one of the officially written primal cogs that set the wheel of technological thoughts and imaginations back in motion.

There are a million ways one story as such could end; Mary chose the ending that would stun, and make people converse about, for ages to come.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Still, even if it ends in misery and unfulfilled revenge on both sides, it is satisfactory to remember that the problem could be solved with some open-mindedness on the creators behalf.
The mistakes the 'monster' made were unforgiving. However considering that he is but a child of barely 1-2 years of existence trapped in a tall and physically powerful monstrous body, rejected by every person he ever tried getting close to, especially by his father, having all that power along with a compressed feeling of injustice, it isn't hard to predict what would follow.

What astonished me the most, was how much of Frankenstein's self was put into this new creation.

His genius, as well as his commitment to his purpose, the incomparable selfishness masked in a shape of questionable selflessness and in the drive to bring the world to its salvation/ help the people by small acts of kindness; these two creatures, creator and creation share many similarities. The creation had every condition to be a highly achieving respectable being, had it simply not a Terror-striking appearance. It isn't hard to assume that, had this story taken place in a more modern setting, this story would have a completely different outcome (a.k.a. Hotel Transylvania animation movie)

(I mentioned before the questionable selflessness. I want to also mention that every selfless action of kindness is either based or produces a very very selfish feeling of achievement; I neither condemn nor congratulate that fact. I want to highlight the similarity that as Frankenstein tries to create a being that will help the world and wants to be remembered as a saviour a hero or a genius, the 'monster', too, helps the people carry their woods and make them chores in the hope they will offer him unquestioning unconditional love.)

(The theory of selfishness-selflessness was mentioned by Joey to Phoebe in the series 'Friends'. It has a strong basis if one considers it)

Frankenstein's creation is searching for his father's love everywhere, but in a close-minded scared and unforgiving world, where security is not granted like in modern ages and every mistake could as well be your last without any phone to contact someone for help, it is reasonable that people see something big and scary and they're afraid. It is the drive of survival.

Closing, I want to say this is a deeply affecting story, it frightens and simultaneously inspires me, it makes me think, and it makes me judge, and it makes me cry. But most importantly it makes me find hope where the characters had none, keeps me wishing I could change things, and this unfulfilled destiny is what gives life, in a bigger perspective, the meaning and the burning motivation to keep trying to succeed where others failed and finally change the course of history or produce technological results, inspiring and never-ending.

Let's raise a glass to evolution; I hope Frankenstein's god complex hasn't rubbed off on me (/?? ? ?)/? ~ ߩ]]>

Gratitude 27161964 Oliver Sacks

No writer has succeeded in capturing the medical and human drama of illness as honestly and as eloquently as Oliver Sacks.

During the last few months of his life, he wrote a set of essays in which he movingly explored his feelings about completing a life and coming to terms with his own death.

It is the fate of every human being, Sacks writes, to be a unique individual, to find his own path, to live his own life, to die his own death.

Together, these four essays form an ode to the uniqueness of each human being and to gratitude for the gift of life.]]>

review:
I wanted to continue reading this man's work after having read one of his books, and it was probably a wrong choice, since it has left me questioning my life in the search for something unique to do with it, in a time when my immature thoughts conflict with the need to contribute in some field these years that will be given to me. The philosophy is so painful that eventually all you can do is stop thinking at all or start thinking scientifically; there's no in between. These are the thoughts that this book generated in my mind, although the view of Oliver is much brighter and optimistic than my own, a fact quite ironic if one considers that he wrote his final breath on this book and here I am sixty years younger than he was, wondering curiously and wishing for my future life to have an impact and to offer something important to the world. So many thoughts, so many feelings since I realize that even a man of his accomplishments has a tiny voice inside pushing him to want to do more and know more and explore everything this world has to offer. And it's almost terrifying to see from the view of a brilliant dead man through his biographic pages and realising that noone can actually do everything because then people would live in a state of constant panic. I will close this huge and probably unimportant monologue saying that whatever contains the thoughts and points of view of this man is remarkable and I definitely recommend it to be read.

A good anthology of notable Greek poets and some of their poems. I have a problem understanding Greek poems and their meanings and I considered that English language, having simpler words, would translate the meaning of the poems more easily to my beginner poetry-brain.

<![CDATA[Max Verstappen: The Inside Track on a Formula One Star]]> 58111165
Few drivers have ever shaken up Formula 1 in quite the same way as Max Verstappen. Already the youngest competitor in F1 history, having made his breakthrough in 2015 aged just 17, his debut race for Red Bull at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix saw him become the youngest driver ever to win a race, achieve a podium finish or even lead a lap.

As the son of F1 legend Jos and elite-level kart driver Sophie Kumpen, Max was destined to be a racing driver. And since that headline-grabbing debut, he has continued to make an indelible impression on the sport, courting criticism and plaudits in equal measure.

Sports journalist James Gray seeks to understand the outspoken nature and aggressive driving style that make Verstappen a must-watch before, during and after races, and why his Dutch fans, who turn up to cheer him on in their orange-clad droves, are quite so fanatical]]>

Happy Place 61718053
They broke up six months ago. And still havent told their best friends.

Which is how they find themselves sharing the largest bedroom at the Maine cottage that has been their friend groups yearly getaway for the last decade. Their annual respite from the world, where for one vibrant, blue week they leave behind their daily lives; have copious amounts of cheese, wine, and seafood; and soak up the salty coastal air with the people who understand them most.

Only this year, Harriet and Wyn are lying through their teeth while trying not to notice how desperately they still want each other. Because the cottage is for sale and this is the last week theyll all have together in this place. They cant stand to break their friends hearts, and so theyll play their parts. Harriet will be the driven surgical resident who never starts a fight, and Wyn will be the laid-back charmer who never lets the cracks show. Its a flawless plan (if you look at it from a great distance and through a pair of sunscreen-smeared sunglasses). After years of being in love, how hard can it be to fake it for one week in front of those who know you best?

A couple who broke up months ago make a pact to pretend to still be together for their annual weeklong vacation with their best friends in this glittering and wise new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry.]]>

It is a very informative book who puts in order strategical knowledge that can be used in various life situations, and not only in war. If we look around we can find explanation of each point made, in the behavior of people in a work environment, in relationships between family, friends or enemies. The book can help us understand the motives behind some behaviors and the information contains a psychological as well as a practical basis.

A very unsatisfactory ending to a very good series. It felt like the author forced herself to finish the book, because many things were left unanswered, the couple kissed and that's it. I was happy in the first two books that each character had their own personality, but now it seemed like every backup character existed so that the only plot of the main romance could move forward. The first half of the book was good but when I realised that the plot wouldn't move in interesting places I got a bit bored.

<![CDATA[The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches]]> 60018635 A warm and uplifting novel about an isolated witch whose opportunity to embrace a quirky new family--and a new love--changes the course of her life.

As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don't mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she's used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos pretending to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

But someone does. An unexpected message arrives, begging her to travel to the remote and mysterious Nowhere House to teach three young witches how to control their magic. It breaks all of the rules, but Mika goes anyway, and is immediately tangled up in the lives and secrets of not only her three charges, but also an absent archaeologist, a retired actor, two long-suffering caretakers, and...Jamie. The handsome and prickly librarian of Nowhere House would do anything to protect the children, and as far as he's concerned, a stranger like Mika is a threat. An irritatingly appealing threat.

As Mika begins to find her place at Nowhere House, the thought of belonging somewhere begins to feel like a real possibility. But magic isn't the only danger in the world, and when a threat comes knocking at their door, Mika will need to decide whether to risk everything to protect a found family she didn't know she was looking for....

In Death By Shakespeare , Kathryn Harkup, best-selling author of A is for Arsenic and expert on the more gruesome side of science, turns her expertise to William Shakespeare and the creative methods he used to kill off his characters. Is death by snakebite really as serene as Cleopatra made it seem? How did Juliet appear dead for 72 hours only to be revived in perfect health? Can you really kill someone by pouring poison in their ear? How long would it take before Lady Macbeth died from lack of sleep? Harkup investigates what actual events may have inspired Shakespeare, what the accepted scientific knowledge of the time was, and how Elizabethan audiences would have responded to these death scenes. Death by Shakespeare reveals this and more in a rollercoaster of Elizabethan carnage, poison, swordplay and bloodshed, with an occasional death by bear-mauling for good measure.
In the Bard's day death was a part of everyday life. Plague, pestilence and public executions were a common occurrence, and the chances of seeing a dead or dying body on the way home from the theater was a fairly likely scenario. Death is one of the major themes that reoccurs constantly throughout Shakespeare's canon, and he certainly didn't shy away from portraying the bloody reality of death on the stage. He didn't have to invent gruesome or novel ways to kill off his characters when everyday experience provided plenty of inspiration.

Shakespeare's era was also a time of huge scientific advance. The human body, its construction and how it was affected by disease came under scrutiny, overturning more than a thousand years of received Greek wisdom, and Shakespeare himself hinted at these new scientific discoveries and medical advances in his writing, such as circulation of the blood and treatments for syphilis.

Shakespeare found dozens of different ways to kill off his characters, and audiences today still enjoy the same reactions--shock, sadness, fear--that they did over 400 years ago when these plays were first performed. But how realistic are these deaths, and did Shakespeare have the science to back them up?]]>

<![CDATA[Making the Monster: The Science Behind Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (Bloomsbury Sigma)]]> 34918613 Frankenstein: Or, Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley had a huge impact on gothic horror and science fiction genres. The name Frankenstein has become part of our everyday language, often used in derogatory terms to describe scientists who have overstepped a perceived moral line. But how did a 19-year-old woman with no formal education come up with the idea for an extraordinary novel such as Frankenstein? The period of 1790-1820 saw huge advances in our understanding of electricity and physiology. Sensational science demonstrations caught the imagination of the general public, and newspapers were full of tales of murderers and resurrectionists.

It is unlikely that Frankenstein would have been successful in his attempts to create life back in 1818. However, advances in medical science mean we have overcome many of the stumbling blocks that would have thwarted his ambition. We can resuscitate people using defibrillators, save lives using blood transfusions, and prolong life through organ transplants--these procedures are nowadays considered almost routine. Many of these modern achievements are a direct result of 19th century scientists conducting their gruesome experiments on the dead.

Making the Monster explores the science behind Shelley's book. From tales of reanimated zombie kittens to electrical experiments on human cadavers, Kathryn Harkup examines the science and scientists that influenced Mary Shelley and inspired her most famous creation, Victor Frankenstein. While, thankfully, we are still far from being able to recreate Victor's "creature," scientists have tried to create the building blocks of life, and the dream of creating life-forms from scratch is now tantalizingly close.]]>

Alamut 171970 Alamut takes place in 11th Century Persia, in the fortress of Alamut, where self-proclaimed prophet Hasan ibn Sabbah is setting up his mad but brilliant plan to rule the region with a handful elite fighters who are to become his "living daggers." By creating a virtual paradise at Alamut, filled with beautiful women, lush gardens, wine and hashish, Sabbah is able to convince his young fighters that they can reach paradise if they follow his commands.

Alamut tells the story of how Sabbah was able to instill fear into the ruling class by creating a small army of devotees who were willing to kill, and be killed, in order to achieve paradise. Believing in the supreme Ismaili motto Nothing is true, everything is permitted, Sabbah wanted to experiment with how far he could manipulate religious devotion for his own political gain through appealing to what he called the stupidity and gullibility of people and their passion for pleasure and selfish desires.

The novel focuses on Sabbah as he unveils his plan to his inner circle, and on two of his young followers the beautiful slave girl Halima, who has come to Alamut to join Sabbah's paradise on earth, and young ibn Tahir, Sabbah's most gifted fighter. As both Halima and ibn Tahir become disillusioned with Sabbah's vision, their lives take unexpected turns.

Alamut was originally written in 1938 as an allegory to Mussolini's fascist state. In the 1960's it became a cult favorite throughout Tito's Yugoslavia, and in the 1990s, during the Balkan's War, it was read as an allegory of the region's strife and became a bestseller in Germany, France and Spain.]]>

<![CDATA[Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match]]> 59816803
For generations, every Frankenstein has found their true love and equal, unlocking lifetimes of blissful wedded adventure. Clever, pretty (and odd) Angelika Frankenstein has run out of suitors and fears she may become the exception to this family rule. When assisting in her brother Victor's ground-breaking experiment to bring a reassembled man back to life, she realizes that having an agreeable gentleman convalescing in the guest suite might be a chance to let a man get to know the real her. For the first time, Angelika embarks upon a project that is all her own.

When her handsome scientific miracle sits up on the lab table, her hopes for an instant romantic connection are thrown into disarray. Her resurrected beau (named Will for the moment) has total amnesia and is solely focused on uncovering his true identity. Trying to ignore their heart-pounding chemistry, Angelika reluctantly joins the investigation into his past, hoping it will bring them closer. But when a second suitor emerges to aid their quest, Angelika wonders if she was too hasty inventing a solution. Perhaps fate is not something that can be influenced in a laboratory? Or is Will (or whatever his name is!) her dream man, tailored for her in every way? And can he survive what was done to him in the name of science, and love?

Filled with carriages, candlesticks, and corpses, Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match is the spooky-season reimagining of the well-known classic that reminds us to never judge a man by his cadaver!]]>

Apart from the reanimation, nothing else seems to have any connection with the name Frankenstein. The characters are whatever. The plot is nonexistent. Everyone and everything in the book wanted to make us like the protagonist, "she is smart, she is kind, and even if she made one mistake or two on the past, now she's growing", well nope. She hasn't changed, the characters around her changed so that she would appear better. I kept reading it because I found the narrator fun, but later on, not even the narration could save this.

Every bad review you'll read on this one is true.]]>

I constantly feel like she is trying to encourage me, to make me keep moving, the words sometimes feel like ones of motherly love, which is telling you to stay here and fight because you are needed. I didn't resonate much with the love poems, but enjoyed the "If you are sad" and "If you need encouragement" parts.

I did annotate some things, and some of them are:

--"You would always be the novel
I took down from the shelf to read." (p.35)

--"It's the last day of the year
And I still lose myself
In good books
And warm tea" (p.48)

My favourite one of the book:

--"The stars have died
And left their light to you
Remember this when
You feel weak
And worthless
And blue" (p.106)

I was surprised to find this poetry book sold in Greece, I was already following Courtney on insta when I spotted it so I bought it immediately. I love the jellyfish illustrations ]]>

It's true that this collection of poems is lackluster and sometimes feels like social media quotes, but they way the poems are written is honest. The author doesn't try to impress or embellish the poems using refined and high-society vintage words, they simply speak true what is felt. That's what resonated with me mostly, when I read the poems I felt like love was spilling out from the pages, fluid and vibrant, I could almost touch it, maybe even understand what the author felt during sleepless nights.

368 George Orwell 0452284236 Forsythia 4 y_classic, g_dystopia I just listened to a masterpiece, I think. I don't know what George did, but it looks like he put all his mind and artistry into this book. I feel the need once again to remind myself to reread it on the future (what a shock, I know), because I am quite certain there are many points I missed due to the format, my attention to the act of listening, as well as my politically virgin mind as of yet. Specifically, chapter 17 which I believe was the largest, described many political ideologies and my mind couldn't focus deeply on it. After that, the book became really depressing, but I understand that everything that was written in the following chapters served the main point of the book: the depiction of the frightening techniques of a totalitarian government, in which a single ruling class possesses absolute power, as also the high level of control that such a government can exert over its citizens.

I didn't like the beginning chapters much, then it got interesting, then it got weird, then again interesting, then really really shocking and finally plain depressing. It is a book that contains so many ideas and I recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind getting a bit disturbed in order to learn. Even if it is considered a sci-fi dystopian, it reads like a non-fiction book to me, because some of the hypotheticals that classified it as sci-fi might just as well be real, in certain times, in certain places. It might seem a hard book to get into, but it is important to continue it. Even if you dislike it, it might give you some ideas and it will undoubtedly give you innumerable things to think about, especially if you don't occupy yourself much with politics.

The feeling of constantly being watched is a very prominent emotion of our times. 1984 has inspired thousands of books, films and other forms of adaptations that were created after the original publication. It has basically shaped humanity through its ideas, to the point where people who read this book nowadays might mistakenly deem it obsolete because they'd claim to know all its truths already. This book was the first. This is exactly why in every bookstore that I enter, no matter how small the city I'm visiting is, there will be at least three different versions of 1984; illustrated, graphic novel, comic, text only, pocket size, huge hardback, normal paperback, leatherbound.

I listened to the audiobook version of the book, the dramatised one that there is on YouTube read by Steve Parker. The narration is exquisite as are the sound effects on the background and the music that sometimes accompanies the words elevates the experience of the listener.

Some sentences that I noted down are:

--"It was a political act", which was referring to the action of adultery.

--"The process of life had ceased to be intolerable", describing the feeling of having someone else to share opinions, beliefs and life with.

--"You are only a rebel from the waist downwards", which I found hilarious.

--"So long they remain in conflict, they prop each other up", which sounds true, since in times of war, the nations put all their resources into scientific advancements (to be used in the military) so that they will survive and prevail.

--"Inefficient nations were always conquered sooner or later and the struggle for efficiency was inimical to illusions". Inefficiency (due to illusions; false beliefs or distorted perceptions caused by political propaganda) weakens a nations ability to defend itself, making it susceptible to external aggression, while efficient nations can better withstand threats and maintain stability.

--"To be efficient it was necessary to be able to learn from the past."

--"the best books are those that tell you what you know already"

--"the more intelligent, the less sane"

--"there was truth and there was untruth. And if you clung to the truth, even against the whole world, you were not mad."

--"Sanity is not statistical."

--"Reality is inside the skull."]]>

<![CDATA[MARVEL STUDIOS' MOON KNIGHT: THE ART OF THE SERIES]]> 63327406 216 Jess Harrold 1302945866 Forsythia 5
I always enjoy witnessing the concept art behind visually interesting series/movies/games, and this time my thrill was multiplied. It's one of those series for which you have heard mediocre things, resulting in you underestimating its quality, but when you finally watch it, it ends up having a great impact on you. First time I watched it I thought it was a very very well played out story and it portrayed concepts I was interested in; Egyptian mythology, a rare (in media) mental health issue representation, powerful and interesting female lead with whom I could identify myself, excellent acting from both the protagonist and the antagonist that made me care deeply for the characters, entertaining secondary characters who are important to the story, and beautiful cinematography along with a wonderful OST (which I ended up listening on Spotify many times). Then it stayed with me. I ended up thinking about this series quite a lot.

This is what makes me wonder why this artbook has no reviews. Where are my fellow Moon Knight enjoyers? I had tried to find this book from local or grand stores in my country but it wasn't being sold anywhere close, so I got it from amazon. It was a gift from my father, and I appreciate that a lot, because it was quite a costly product and also because I really really love this series.

Now about the artbook.

Scarlet Scarab's design was the highlight of the book for me. Excellent design, texture-wise, colour-wise, everything. The hair-tale design of Ammit was also a great idea. I enjoyed reading about the thought process behind the designs of each god of the Ennead as well as the Heka priests. The close-ups of each prop, the weapons, the small details of the uniforms, even the moon-design on the shoe sole were all truly fascinating to my enthusiastic brain.

Just like Mohamed Diab, Episode 5 is my favourite. The way the storytelling plays with the possibilities of it all being a reality or an illusion of an unstable brain, this duality which we as observers are forced to face, it brings us closer to our protagonist's position, it makes us feel what he feels, it makes us see through his eyes. And Oscar's acting pushes the concept to come to life in an unparalleled way.

Marvel took the game one step further with this series and I hope I'll find other people as excited for it as I still remain.]]>

My favourite Marvel series as of now.

Marvel took the game one step further with this series and I hope I'll find other people as excited for it as I still remain.

<![CDATA[Covenant, Vol. 1 (Covenant, #1)]]> 176442883 Discover Lysandra Vuong's hit supernatural action Webtoon Covenant in print for the first time ever.

"If you need a comic that blends action fantasy with mythology, comedy, and punk gothic fashion, Covenant is wildly enjoyable." -Women Write About Comics

In a world where priests are decked out in holy tattoos and brandish machine guns in the face of demons, a powerful exorcist and a mysterious boy cross paths . . . in a college classroom.

Erzas faith is waning when God intervenes and sends him on a mission to protect Sunny, an outwardly normal human, from demonic forces. Looks can be deceiving, however, as Sunny proves to have hidden secrets and a bloody past nipping at his heels. Between Erzas sunny sarcasm, and Sunnys closed-off distant demeanor, the two struggle to find any common ground to bridge the gap. Yet, as much as the two bicker and retain distance, neither can help but be drawn to the other.

With his church under scrutiny and the threat of war on the horizon, will Ezra find his conviction in time to keep Sunny safe? Will Sunny even accept his help? Or will they both suffer the consequences??

From debut creator LySandra Vuong comes the first volume of the supernatural action webcomic that explores religious faith, a slow burn queer romance, the weight of destiny, and what it means to be good in a world plagued by demons.

This volume collects episodes 1C18 of the hit WEBTOON comic Covenant.]]>

2) The middle of the book is physics.

3) The last third of the book is the "car chase" scene in all good action movies.

The invisible man had a much more violent personality than I thought of in the beginning. Initially I assumed he was estranged from the world's kind demeanor due to the nature of his job. But later, as he tried to explain his situation to the people around him, even while talking to an old colleague of his, a person of science like himself, his reactions appeared to be without logic and his actions were taken too far. He killed without remorse, and his reasoning for doing so was hollow. He wanted to create "a kingdom of terror" using his power, and this confession instantly turned him into a villain. He had no tragic backstory, unlike Frankenstein's monster who was repeatedly abandoned by his creator, every hope for his integration into society successively destroyed, thus cursing humanity and proclaiming war to all of human kind. The invisible man cursed humanity for no reason other than people being annoyed when they were being spooked or attacked by a stranger with no apparent physical form.

He committed theft time and time again, expressing no qualms or second thoughts about his actions, wholeheartedly believing he did nothing wrong, having the audacity to get upset whenever someone claimed the opposite. He indirectly led his father to his death and whatever small hint of remorse he might have felt was translated as a simple biological malfunction due to being emotionally attached to a familiar face. When he claimed he wanted to create and control a town on his own, executing a person each day for the sake of exemplification, I immediately started thinking about the possible medical diagnoses for disturbed mental health this man could have. However, this being a novella, we don't get to thoroughly assess his character or understand the basic root for his emotional reactions that constitute his psyche.

It was an interesting novella, around 5 hours of listening. I listened to the greek audiobook version of it, with a very good narrator who made the story infinitely more entertaining than it would have been had I possibly physically read it (?̦? ЦŦæ??). Glorious Exploits 127278133 An utterly original celebration of that which binds humanity across battle lines and history.

On the island of Sicily amid the Peloponnesian War, the Syracusans have figured out what to do with the surviving Athenians who had the gall to invade their city: theyve herded the sorry prisoners of war into a rock quarry and left them to rot. Looking for a way to pass the time, Lampo and Gelon, two unemployed potters with a soft spot for poetry and drink, head down into the quarry to feed the Athenians if, and only if, they can manage a few choice lines from their great playwright Euripides. Before long, the two mates hatch a plan to direct a full-blown production of Medea. After all, you can hate the people but love their art. But as opening night approaches, what started as a lark quickly sets in motion a series of extraordinary events, and our wayward heroes begin to realize that staging a play can be as dangerous as fighting a war, with all sorts of risks to life, limb, and friendship.

Told in a contemporary Irish voice and as riotously funny as it is deeply moving, Glorious Exploits is an unforgettable ode to the power of art in a time of war, brotherhood in a time of enmity, and human will throughout the ages.]]>

Dracula 17245 You can find an alternative cover edition for this ISBN here and here.

When Jonathan Harker visits Transylvania to help Count Dracula with the purchase of a London house, he makes a series of horrific discoveries about his client. Soon afterwards, various bizarre incidents unfold in England: an apparently unmanned ship is wrecked off the coast of Whitby; a young woman discovers strange puncture marks on her neck; and the inmate of a lunatic asylum raves about the 'Master' and his imminent arrival.

In Dracula, Bram Stoker created one of the great masterpieces of the horror genre, brilliantly evoking a nightmare world of vampires and vampire hunters and also illuminating the dark corners of Victorian sexuality and desire.

This Norton Critical Edition includes a rich selection of background and source materials in three areas: Contexts includes probable inspirations for Dracula in the earlier works of James Malcolm Rymer and Emily Gerard. Also included are a discussion of Stoker's working notes for the novel and "Dracula's Guest," the original opening chapter to Dracula. Reviews and Reactions reprints five early reviews of the novel. "Dramatic and Film Variations" focuses on theater and film adaptations of Dracula, two indications of the novel's unwavering appeal. David J. Skal, Gregory A. Waller, and Nina Auerbach offer their varied perspectives. Checklists of both dramatic and film adaptations are included.

Criticism collects seven theoretical interpretations of Dracula by Phyllis A. Roth, Carol A. Senf, Franco Moretti, Christopher Craft, Bram Dijkstra, Stephen D. Arata, and Talia Schaffer.

A Chronology and a Selected Bibliography are included.]]>

I listened to the greek audiobook version of the book. It was a narrator I enjoyed, but due to the form of the presented text (many povs, letters and newspaper excerpts) I got really confused about who is doing or saying what, and it took me out of focus, to the point where I frequently fell asleep at my listenings.

I didn't really get to the third part of the story, but I read a summary about what happens. I want to get to read it in physical format sometime, because I might have a different opinion.

However, the pillars of the psychology this book was built upon were the anxiety for the supremacy of science over religion. This fact, along with the heavy/conservative Christianity of some ideas, and the fear of immigrants evident through its symbolism, make me disheartened on whether this will be one of my favourite classics. A reread will show.]]>

The narrative of the book feels like its divided in three genres: the gothic, the mystery and the adventure. First part I found really appealing because that's what I signed up here for. The mystery didn't win me over because I already know more or less the story, plus the fact that I was very confused about who was saying what. Also some dialogues felt too stretched out and repetitive. This is maybe due to the format in which I read it:

I have heard about the other stories of the author, and I know more or less the plot of the rest of the series, but I went into this one completely blind, and I'm glad I did. Celaena is a strong-willed, hot-headed woman who wears her heart on her sleeve. The spontaneity of her character, along with her discipline gained by harsh training as an assassin, and her above than average intelligence, made her a very likeable protagonist to my eyes. The two boys and the princess were also very interesting companions and I caught myself caring for what happens to all of them.

There was always an acceptable balance between the romantic tension, the thriller, the mystery and the action. Maybe I felt somewhere in the middle that more could happen, but even the slowest events were used to evolve our characters or shed light on the type of bonds they were forming with each other.

It's very hard to rate this book any less than 4,5 stars, since I enjoyed it very much and find myself eager to know the rest of the story. Adventure, assassins, trials, and maybe a little bit of magic as the cherry on top, sign me up. If we see some more necromancy in the next books, I'll be most certainly delighted.]]>

She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesnt tint hers? She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.

In Im Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detailjust as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly , she is thrust into fame. Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (Hi Gale!), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants.

Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, Im Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.]]>

Having to grow up with a narcissistic person for a mother is one of those situations which you can't easily handle, much less recognise as a problem that is detrimental to your mental and physical health. This autobiography opened my eyes to the existence of dysfunctional families and deeply destructive parent-child bonds, and made me take a further step into understanding the shattered psych of a child that is subjected to continuous mental mistreatment.

Even having read chunks of information about anorexia, I've never met a person facing this health issue in real life, and apart from a youtuber whoose experiences I recently started watching, I have not formed a clear cut version of what anorexia really is or what it can be at its worst.

Jennette's storytelling helped me reach a little further into the concept of the anorexic brain, while simultaneously making me empathize with her, following her step by step into her mental shattering since her childhood years.

Reading this book I could really feel all the effort that was put into getting away from the cycle of hurting oneself, feeling sorry for it, and compromising by taking a more hurtful action against oneself. In the eye of the hurricane there is quiet. You cannot understand the level of the damage because you cannot see it from a third person perspective. Once you start to destabilise this "perfect structure" you have built over your childhood years, you take a step away from the eye and into the hurricane. And then you start to see the damage. And you start to feel it more intensely. In order to get out of it, you need to master all the strength you can manage and fight for it.
That's how I pictured Jennette's transformation.

I listened to the audiobook version, with Jennette's voice narration. I strongly recommend this audiobook.]]>

What I found most interesting was that through each passage the reader collects bits and pieces about how the author feels and also the way fear can encircle a child's mentality. We vaguely witness how certain events (eg. The classmate who believed in the existence of the devil, or the possibility that mom might read the journal) might lead to a brain, which, through obsessive thoughts, tries to protect itself from external psychological trauma and from the nightmarish entity that unwillingly sabotages the self (the Hooded Man). Religious trauma hits closer to home, Greek family and all.

I adore the cover design and the illustrations on the inside of the chapbook (By @kalli_k_ on ig).

Looking forward to reading more by this author.

Daisy Jones & The Six 40597810 Everyone knows DAISY JONES & THE SIX, but nobody knows the reason behind their split at the absolute height of their popularity . . . until now.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but its the rock n roll she loves most. By the time shes twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out shes pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.]]>

The book is presented as a documentary about the biography of the 'daisy jones and the six' band, about their musical success, focusing on the personal lives of the two lead singers (Daisy and Billy). Their understanding for artistic expression through music moves in similar wavelengths, to the point that they appear to be "professional soulmates" which poses problems to their personal battles.

The main villain of the book is addictions. Billy fights alcoholism and Daisy suffers from daily drug abuse. I haven't read much about addictions in a way that the story will affect me. I would say that this book was no exception since I shed no tear during the whole audiobook. But I understood their pain and I believe these imaginary biographies were well presented. I have no experience in the matter, although perhaps I'd like to read more stories with this theme in the future.

I later saw that it is also a tv series and I listened to some of the songs. They were fun but not my style (yet). I imagined Daisy's voice more powerful and to be heard more strongly in the duet. I also read Elvis Presley was the main actress's grandfather. I'm coming from a generation that hasn't heard that much of Elvis's songs or has and just doesn't recognise he's the singer. That made me take an interest on this renowned artist as well.

It is a good book. I doubt I'd have liked the book the same reading it as I did listening to it. Its narration gives a real tone to it, makes it easier to be immersed in the story.]]>

I listened to the audiobook and what made the story interesting for me was the voice acting of the narrators. It was 9 hours that I broke down into 3 weeks but I always remembered what had happened because of the way the story was narrated. After exam period, an audiobook is the perfect way to rest my eyes while simultaneously diving into a new story and leaving reality for a bit.
