صنّف هؤلاء الرحالة الذين تخرّج معظمهم في مدارس كهنوتية أو عسكرية كتباً تناولوا فيها أخبار رحلاتهم بشكل يمازج بين الحقيقة والخيال مصوّرين سكانها شعباً متوحشاً فاسداً جنسياً، أدنى ثقافةً وتحضراً.
