En me plongeant dans la vie et l’œuvre de David Bowie, j’ai tout écouté d’une oreille neuve.

J’ai beaucoup lu aussi : ses interviews et de nombreux témoignages sur lui. Et j’ai eu un choc : l’œuvre de Bowie est l’une des plus captivantes, inventives, libres et audacieuses de la fin du siècle dernier, tous arts confondus. Et j’ai compris aussi que ce qui m’avait longtemps gêné chez lui était une forme particulière de folie : l’incapacité de savoir qui l’on est vraiment, la nécessité de se mettre perpétuellement en scène pour échapper à un vertigineux sentiment de vide.

Ce livre raconte comment, tout simplement, je me suis converti Ă  David Bowie.

MICHKA ASSYAS

Michka Assayas est né le 2 novembre 1958. Ancien élève de l’École Normale Supérieure de Saint-Cloud, il a collaboré dès son plus jeune âge, en 1980, à Rock & Folk et Libération, comme spécialiste du rock post-punk, un courant alors minoritaire (New Order, les Smiths, etc.). Critique littéraire à Libération et éditorialiste aux Inrockuptibles, il publie en 2000 le Dictionnaire du rock dans la collection Bouquins chez Robert Laffont, remanié et réédité en 2014. Son livre de conversations avec le chanteur Bono du groupe U2, paru en 2005, a été traduit dans de nombreuses langues. Résumons la controverse : le président du Conseil des arts de Montréal refuse de subventionner la pièce, qu'il qualifie de “merde” et de “cochonnerie”. L'évêque de l'époque, Mgr Grégoire, dénonce publiquement la “présentation loufoque” de la Vierge dans la pièce. La Cour supérieure du Québec interdit la publication et la diffusion du livre. Les auteurs se mobilisent. Les protestations pleuvent. Le combat se poursuit jusqu'à l'année suivante.

Avec le recul, on ne peut que s'étonner d'un tel tollé. Sur scène, trois femmes : la Vierge, statufiée, la Mère, Marie, et la Putain, Madeleine. “Je suis une fille de joie”, dit Madeleine. “La joie de qui ?”, répond la Statue. Au-delà de la réflexion essentielle dont la pièce participe, les dialogues, qui avaient tant scandalisé à l'époque, paraissent aujourd'hui teintés d'un humour bon enfant. Elles chantent en chœur, ces femmes meurtries, elles crient, elles insultent, elles rêvent. Elles s'expriment. Et c'est peut-être ce qui touche le plus dans Les Fées ont soif : la joie profonde et contagieuse qu'éprouvent ces femmes de pouvoir enfin s'exprimer. If you have picked up this book with the hope of finding a simple and cheery tale, I'm afraid you have picked up the wrong book altogether. The story may seem cheery at first, when the Baudelaire children spend time in the company of some interesting reptiles and a giddy uncle, but don't be fooled. If you know anything at all about the unlucky Baudelaire children, you already know that even pleasant events lead down the same road to misery.

In fact, within the pages you now hold in your hands, the three siblings endure a car accident, a terrible odor, a deadly serpent, a long knife, a large brass reading lamp, and the appearance of a person they'd hoped never to see again.

I am bound to record these tragic events, but you are free to put this book back on the shelf and seek something lighter.

Pas de temps non plus pour s'appesantir sur le triste sort des enfants. La place est à l'action et à la réflexion. Il faudra faire preuve de beaucoup d'intelligence pour se sortir des moments difficiles. Heureusement Violette, Klaus et Prunille ne manquent pas d'astuce ! Violette, l'aînée, a quatorze ans et adore les sciences. Elle a toujours une nouvelle invention en préparation. Le second, Klaus, dévore les livres et, à douze ans, il a déjà engrangé un savoir impressionnant. Enfin, la petite Prunille, "pas plus haute qu'une botte", utilise ses quatre dents pour mordre tout ce qui passe...

Le monde vu avec des yeux d'enfants, c'est encore le meilleur moyen de le comprendre. Les enfants à partir de onze ans l'ont bien compris puisque les Orphelins Baudelaire ont déjà détrôné plusieurs fois Harry Potter des meilleures ventes aux États-Unis. Pas de fantastique ni de sorcellerie pourtant, les aventures des enfants Baudelaire se déroulent dans une époque qui n'est plus la nôtre mais ils nous en apprennent long sur la vie, sans morales ni leçons. C'est un plaisir de les suivre même si leur vie est loin d'être rose, le style de Lemony Snicket est toujours subtil et plein d'humour et rappelle un peu Roald Dahl dans James et la grosse pêche. Il y a fort à parier que Lemony Snicket deviendra rapidement un classique de la littérature jeunesse ! À partir de 11 ans. --Nadia Krovnikoff
