If you have anxiety, insomnia or any other kind of trouble sleeping, I prescribe this book to you. While Dickens is (ironically)one of my favourite authors, this book has a very clich¨¦ didactive uninteresting story. The writing is still good, it is still Dickens, the structure and phrases mesmerised you from time to to time, but it can never become an interesting story, even in the Christmas time ...

Critique of Pure Reason 18288 'The purpose of this critique of pure speculative reason consists in the attempt to change the old procedure of metaphysics and to bring about a complete revolution'

Kant's Critique of Pure Reason (1781) is the central text of modern philosophy. It presents a profound and challenging investigation into the nature of human reason, its knowledge and its illusions. Reason, Kant argues, is the seat of certain concepts that precede experience and make it possible, but we are not therefore entitled to draw conclusions about the natural world from these concepts. The Critique brings together the two opposing schools of philosophy: rationalism, which grounds all our knowledge in reason, and empiricism, which traces all our knowledge to experience. Kant's transcendental idealism indicates a third way that goes far beyond these alternatives.]]>

<![CDATA[Killing the Witches: The Horror of Salem, Massachusetts]]> 65214203 With over 19 million copies in print and a remarkable record of #1 New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestsellers, Bill O'Reilly's Killing series is the most popular series of narrative histories in the world.

Killing the Witches revisits one of the most frightening and inexplicable episodes in American history: the events of 1692 and 1693 in Salem Village, Massachusetts. What began as a mysterious affliction of two young girls who suffered violent fits and exhibited strange behavior soon spread to other young women. Rumors of demonic possession and witchcraft consumed Salem. Soon three women were arrested under suspicion of being witches--but as the hysteria spread, more than 200 people were accused. Thirty were found guilty, twenty were executed, and others died in jail or their lives were ruined.

What really happened in Salem? Killing the Witches tells the horrifying story of a colonial town's madness, offering the historical context of similar episodes of community mania during that time, and exploring the evidence that emerged in the Salem trials, in contemporary accounts, and in subsequent investigations. The result is a compulsively readable book about good, evil, and how fear can overwhelm fact and reason.]]>

<![CDATA[Homo Deus: A History of Tomorrow]]> 31138556 Yuval Noah Harari, author of the critically-acclaimed New York Times bestseller and international phenomenon Sapiens, returns with an equally original, compelling, and provocative book, turning his focus toward humanity¡¯s future, and our quest to upgrade humans into gods.

Over the past century humankind has managed to do the impossible and rein in famine, plague, and war. This may seem hard to accept, but, as Harari explains in his trademark style¡ªthorough, yet riveting¡ªfamine, plague and war have been transformed from incomprehensible and uncontrollable forces of nature into manageable challenges. For the first time ever, more people die from eating too much than from eating too little; more people die from old age than from infectious diseases; and more people commit suicide than are killed by soldiers, terrorists and criminals put together. The average American is a thousand times more likely to die from binging at McDonalds than from being blown up by Al Qaeda.

What then will replace famine, plague, and war at the top of the human agenda? As the self-made gods of planet earth, what destinies will we set ourselves, and which quests will we undertake? Homo Deus?explores the projects, dreams and nightmares that will shape the twenty-first century¡ªfrom overcoming death to creating artificial life. It asks the fundamental questions: Where do we go from here? And how will we protect this fragile world from our own destructive powers? This is the next stage of evolution. This is?Homo Deus.

With the same insight and clarity that made Sapiens an international hit and a New York Times bestseller, Harari maps out our future.

I should first specify that I used a summarised audiobook, going through the whole book in 20 minutes. It was not a bad book, it had some valid ideas, but mostly it was an unnecessary sequel to "Sapiens" which I believe was mostly written as a result of the success of the previous book and with the aim of financial gain more than informing the reader. Even the tone of the author has changed ...

2. On a more FACTUAL note, the book is a little biased towards certain ideologies, while we all know that Anthropology is one of the least definite strands of science. Of course, no science can be devoid of ideology, but it can acknowledge its ideology and briefly mention the contrasting ones if it aims to be a complete account of the truth.

I should first specify that I used a summarised audiobook, going through the whole book in 25 minutes. Before that, I listened to the first two chapters in full, but decided that a summarized version is more than enough. Not because it's not brilliantly written or the content is not worth reading. For two reasons, one personal and one factual:

1. I had read a 3-volume book before, which although written in the 1960s, they almost contained the exact same information. I didn't need the details because I already knew them. But this is personal.

Since then, I have encountered many other Indigenous writers, and as a very personal opinion, I could barely relate to any of these poems, not because of the cultural barriers, but because of the strange conception of love in them.

But personal opinions aside, as a poet and literature graduate, it is almost an agreed upon fact for me that any poem is as good as its imagery. There are a few brilliant imagery in this collection, and a lot of clich¨¦ or badly described ones. So if it loses one star because of my personal feelings, the other two are very objective.

Still, I rate anything that is a "waste of time" with 1-star, and I can tell for sure with all its shortcomings, it wasn't a total waste of my time.]]>

<![CDATA[The Body Is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love]]> 34956885 A global movement guided by love.

Humans are a varied and divergent bunch with all manner of beliefs, morals, and bodies. Systems of oppression thrive off our inability to make peace with difference and injure the relationship we have with our own bodies.

The Body Is Not an Apology offers radical self-love as the balm to heal the wounds inflicted by these violent systems. World-renowned activist and poet Sonya Renee Taylor invites us to reconnect with the radical origins of our minds and bodies and celebrate our collective, enduring strength. As we awaken to our own indoctrinated body shame, we feel inspired to awaken others and to interrupt the systems that perpetuate body shame and oppression against all bodies. When we act from this truth on a global scale, we usher in the transformative opportunity of radical self-love, which is the opportunity for a more just, equitable, and compassionate world--for us all.]]>

River Woman 37006925 Governor General¡¯s Award¨Cwinning M¨¦tis poet and acclaimed novelist Katherena Vermette¡¯s second collection, river woman, explores her relationship to nature ¡ª its destructive power and beauty, its timelessness, and its place in human history.

Award-winning M¨¦tis poet and novelist Katherena Vermette¡¯s second book of poetry, river woman, examines and celebrates love as decolonial action. Here love is defined as a force of reclamation and repair in times of trauma, and trauma is understood to exist within all times. The poems are grounded in what feels like an eternal present, documenting moments of clarity that lift the speaker (and reader) out of the illusion of linear experience. This is what we mean when we describe a work of art as being timeless.

Like the river they speak to, these poems return again and again to the same source in search of new ways to reconstruct what has been lost. Vermette suggests that it¡¯s through language and the body ¨D particularly through language as it lives inside the body ¨D that a fragmented self might resurface as once again whole. This idea of breaking apart and coming back together is woven throughout the collection as the speaker contemplates the ongoing negotiation between the city, the land, and the water, and as she finds herself falling into trust with the ones she loves.

Vermette honours the river as a woman ¨D her destructive power and beauty, her endurance, and her stories. These poems sing from a place where ¡°words / transcend ceremony / into everyday¡± and ¡°nothing / is inanimate.¡±]]>

Robert Adams possesses the wit to avoid cant, dogma, and platitudes of the scholar that can deaden our responses to the lively business of art. His eight essays pose a host of questions about photography's place in the arts-- and in our lives: How is photography art? By what standards are we to judge the success or failure of a photograph? His reflections are delicate, unusually calm, but they also carry the force of sure conviction, the passion of absolute dedication.

Few visual artists are capable of articulating the subtle, potent wellsprings of their own creative achievement. Adams does so with extraordinary grace and power. This book offers not only an insight to the work of a distinguished photographer, but also an illuminating challenge and corrective to the usual pieties and pettiness of photography criticism today.

<![CDATA[Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You]]> 52220686 Stamped from the Beginning for ages 12 and up.

A timely, crucial, and empowering exploration of racism--and antiracism--in America.

This is NOT a history book.
This is a book about the here and now.
A book to help us better understand why we are where we are.
A book about race.

The construct of race has always been used to gain and keep power, to create dynamics that separate and silence. This is a remarkable reimagining of Dr. Ibram X. Kendi's Stamped from the Beginning, winner of a National Book Award. It reveals the history of racist ideas in America and inspires hope for an antiracist future.

Stamped takes you on a race journey from then to now, shows you why we feel how we feel, and why the poison of racism lingers. It also proves that while racist ideas have always been easy to fabricate and distribute, they can also be discredited.

Through a gripping, fast-paced, and energizing narrative, Jason Reynolds shines a light on the many insidious forms of racist ideas--and on ways readers can identify and stamp out racist thoughts in their daily lives.]]>

<![CDATA[Hermeneutics: Interpretation Theory in Schleiermacher, Dilthey, Heidegger and Gadamer]]> 713670
Palmer principally treats the conception of hermeneutics enunciated by Heidegger and developed into a ¡°philosophical hermeneutics¡± by Hans-Georg Gadamer. He provides a brief overview of the field of hermeneutics by surveying some half-dozen alternate definitions of the term and by examining in?detail the contributions of Friedrich Schleiermacher and Wilhelm Dilthey. In the ¡°Manifesto¡± which concludes the book, Palmer suggests the potential significance of hermeneutics for literary interpretation.

When the context of interpretation is pressed to its limits, hermeneutics becomes the philosophical analysis of what is involved in every act of understanding. In this context, hermeneutics becomes relevant not simply to the humanistic disciplines, in which linguistic and historical understanding are crucial, but to scientific forms of interpretation as well, for it asserts the principles involved in any and every act of interpretation.]]>

<![CDATA[A Theology Of Reading: The Hermeneutics Of Love]]> 288492 read lovingly? That is the question that drives this unique book. Jacobs pursues this challenging task by alternating largely theoretical, theological chapters¡ªdrawing above all on Augustine and Mikhail Bakhtin¡ªwith interludes that investigate particular readers (some real, some fictional) in the act of reading. Among the authors considered are Shakespeare, Cervantes, Nabakov, Nicholson Baker, George Eliot, W.H. Auden, and Dickens. The theoretical framework is elaborated in the main chapters, while various counterfeits of or substitutes for genuinely charitable interpretation are considered in the interludes, which progressively close in on that rare creature, the loving reader. Through this doubled method of investigation, Jacobs tries to show how difficult it is to read charitably¡ªeven should one wish to, which, of course, few of us do. And precisely because the prospect of reading in such a manner is so offputting, one of the covert goals of the book is to make it seem both more plausible and more attractive.]]> 196 Alan Jacobs 081336566X Sohrab 0 to-read 4.16 2001 A Theology Of Reading: The Hermeneutics Of Love

<![CDATA[Archaeology of Babel: The Colonial Foundation of the Humanities]]> 36709454
Tracing an unacknowledged history that extends from British Orientalist Sir William Jones to Palestinian American intellectual Edward Said and beyond, Archaeology of Babel excavates the epistemic transformation that was engendered on a global scale by the colonial reconstruction of native languages, literatures, and law. In the process, it reveals the extent to which even postcolonial studies and European philosophy¡ªnot to mention discourses as disparate as Islamic fundamentalism, Hindu nationalism, and global environmentalism¡ªare the progeny of colonial rule. Going further, it unearths the alternate concepts of language and literature that were lost along the way and issues its own call for humanists to reckon with the politics of the philological practices to which they now return.]]>

I should first specify that I used a summarised audiobook, going through the whole book in 12 minutes. Despite my dislike for non-fiction books that generalise ideas, this one kept a very open-minded view (Oscillating between perspectives) which counteracted its generalisations. It sounds like a very interesting book, and I am going to read the full 180-page text as soon as possible.

I should first specify that I used a summarised audiobook, going through the whole book in 15 minutes. That being said, I found it enough to get the gist of the book, I even dare say that probably over 400 pages are too many for the key ideas of this book. I found it excessive and mixed my general distaste for self-help books it was a recipe for a 1-star rating. Still, I cannot deny that a couple of the techniques mentioned in the book (although I have yet to test them) seemed interesting and potentially effective, which bought it a second star.

To sum up, I would say (acknowledging my bias about self-help books) that if you have extra time on your hands, not knowing what you want to do, there is no harm in reading it. But if you want to be careful about what you spend your time and energy on, maybe there are better and more scientific books you can choose.

A desperate race through the cathedrals and castles of Europe.
An astonishing truth concealed for centuries...unveiled at last.

A fascinating and absorbing thriller -- perfect for history buffs, conspiracy nuts, puzzle lovers or anyone who appreciates a great, riveting story.

While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon receives an urgent late-night phone call: the elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum. Near the body, police have found a baffling cipher. While working to solve the enigmatic riddle, Langdon is stunned to discover it leads to a trail of clues hidden in the works of Da Vinci -- clues visible for all to see -- yet ingeniously disguised by the painter.

Langdon joins forces with a gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, and learns the late curator was involved in the Priory of Sion -- an actual secret society whose members included Sir Isaac Newton, Botticelli, Victor Hugo, and Da Vinci, among others.

In a breathless race through Paris, London, and beyond, Langdon and Neveu match wits with a faceless powerbroker who seems to anticipate their every move. Unless Langdon and Neveu can decipher the labyrinthine puzzle in time, the Priory's ancient secret -- and an explosive historical truth -- will be lost forever.

Greeted by fireworks displays, cheering crowds, and Prime Minister Nehru himself, Saleem grows up to learn the ominous consequences of this coincidence. His every act is mirrored and magnified in events that sway the course of national affairs; his health and well-being are inextricably bound to those of his nation; his life is inseparable, at times indistinguishable, from the history of his country. Perhaps most remarkable are the telepathic powers linking him with India¡¯s 1,000 other ¡°midnight¡¯s children,¡± all born in that initial hour and endowed with magical gifts.

This novel is at once a fascinating family saga and an astonishing evocation of a vast land and its people¨Ca brilliant incarnation of the universal human comedy. Twenty-five years after its publication, Midnight¡¯ s Children stands apart as both an epochal work of fiction and a brilliant performance by one of the great literary voices of our time.]]>

I guess the main reason I gave it 3 stars, was the fact that it is too overrated, not because it is not good. I just expected much more after hearing so much about this book.

Yet still, it is a landmark both in postcolonial, postmodern and magic realism literature and that is undeniable.

I should first specify that I used a summarised audiobook, going through the whole book in 25 minutes. That being said, I found it enough to get the gist of the book, I even dare say that probably over 400 pages are excessive for the key ideas of this book. However, I should also acknowledge that my 3-star is partially due to the fact that I found parts of the ideas old and irrelevant based on our knowledge about language today. The disagreement with the "Linguistic Relativity" hypothesis (Something which is part of what I personally like to call "Chomskian Bias") is now less relevant, as many empirical psychology, neurology and cognitive science research has partially or completely confirmed that hypothesis recently. Also, some of its claims about the uniqueness of sound articulation are argued through the inability of machines to recreate that, which we find today as a given norm of daily life in simple text-to-speech services. But I believe that for its time, it might have been a good book, which is why it still gets above the middle 2.5 starts. While the "Chomskian Bias", specifically for a book that relies partially on Saussaurian linguistics, is not justifiable even for 1994; at the end of the day, it gives a general picture of the major discussions in anthropological linguistics.

<![CDATA[The Case Against Education: Why the Education System Is a Waste of Time and Money]]> 36319077
Caplan draws on the latest social science to show how the labor market values grades over knowledge, and why the more education your rivals have, the more you need to impress employers. He explains why graduation is our society's top conformity signal, and why even the most useless degrees can certify employability. He advocates two major policy responses. The first is educational austerity. Government needs to sharply cut education funding to curb this wasteful rat race. The second is more vocational education, because practical skills are more socially valuable than teaching students how to outshine their peers.

Romantic notions about education being "good for the soul" must yield to careful research and common sense ¡ª The Case against Education points the way.]]>

I should first specify that I used a summarised audiobook, going through the whole book in 25 minutes. That being said, I really enjoyed the detailed (and research-based) argumentation against traditional education; a perspective that I myself hold as a person who studied in private schools, holds four university degrees and is currently still working on his PhD thesis. The discussion about signalling theory was particularly interesting, as one of my degrees (and previous jobs) was in Human Resources and Recruitment. I can say it could be a shorter book (so I did not have to rely on a summary) since ideas have a tendency to repeat themselves. Also, the suggestions are good, but are still neglect many crucial aspects of education (just as the traditional system does).

I would argue that it is a good book to read/listen to a summary of; but not strong enough to be worth its original 400+ pages.

I should first specify that I used a summarised audiobook, going through the whole book in 40 minutes. That being said, I really found the arguments cogent, compelling, and a good foot to stand on for more post-modern (and less analytical) philosophical musings that can also satisfy people who arrogantly have an "Analytical Philosophy Fetish". As a big advocate against the 21st-century empirical and scientific method, his reflections on the cause-effect relationship and inductive reasoning were particularly interesting to me. It was also strong enough to shield itself against a great majority of fallacy accusations! At the same time, the same reasoning is a ground to reject many superstitions. It was that middle ground of being logical and critical that tasted very sweet to me! The only place that I found the reasoning a bit unconvincing (which might easily be a result of me listening to a book summary), was where he tries to explain the relationship between (and the level of) human free will and deterministic bounds.

review:
As much as the nonfiction section was interesting, and the poetry section was acceptably good, the fiction was terrible. The worst thing about this book is many pieces (from poetry to nonfiction) do not follow the main theme of "In-Betweenness" and that incoherence creates an undesirable reading experience. The good thing is that many underrepresented writers are given a voice, some of them were above and beyond in their craft, and deserve much more than a few poems or a nonfiction piece in a collection.

It is too structuralist and too universalist for my taste. Eliade is so invested in finding "universal" mythical "structures" that instead of investigating myths for their form and content, sometimes forces his previously found structures on them. But that being said, it still is a phenomenal and well-written research into many primordial mythologies of different human societies around the world, and have several very valid conclusive points.

If you look at books I rated 1-star you see that I always even finished those cases. But I could not go more than 1/3 into this book, it was disgusting. Biased, one-sided, and full of misinformation, this was a testament to why academia has completely lost its multifaceted, open-minded, tolerant disposition, which used to be an essential part of it. The book is written by a scholar whose Wikipedia page reads: "Christopher Butler (1940 ¨C 18 March 2020) was an English literature academic. An expert on modernism, he was Professor of English Language and Literature at Christ Church, Oxford." Given the fact that Postmodernism is first and foremost a break from (and revolt against) Modernism, appointing an expert on modernism to write a book about the opposing school of thought is wrong in the first place. But even then, a real scholar should know how to keep his personal biases and intellectual tendencies aside when they are giving a "very short introduction" (a report, a description) on any other school of thought.

If you want to learn about Postmodernism, this book will not provide anything but misinformation or biased judgemental opinions. <![CDATA[Strip: Poems (Etel Adnan Poetry Series)]]> 53203929
¡°The mystery that Abughattas composes is always moving toward an impossible freeing of the self from its numerous frames. Yet frame by frame . . . she suspends our disbelief, catalogs those potentialities in an America always ready to shoot, direct, and produce the film of itself. Strip is ¡®in love with possibility,¡¯ ¡®in praise of here I am, here I¡¯ve been,¡¯ USA style. Strip celebrates the body¡ªits rise and fall, ebb and flow, in a carnival of parties¡ªrestlessly, shamelessly, searching for a way out¡. Even as Abughattas claims that ¡®I can¡¯t believe sometimes I have a body,¡¯ her poems teem with an awareness of the body¡¯s unavoidable centrality in our lives¡ªin how we view our lives, and how others view them; in how they progress, and how they end; in how they become meaningful, and how they are stripped of meaning. And no stripping escapes memory. Whether in terms of dispossession or sexuality, admiration or pity, Abughattas renders her treatment of the body with candor and poignancy. . . . The most startling moments in Abughattas¡¯s poems, however, depend not on shocking or intimate details¡ªbut on the ¡®I¡¯ pulling away from the self, abandoning the ego, and gazing outward. She tries to see something else, to escape the body¡¯s restraints.¡±

A very good collection, yet the last two books I'd read from the Ethel Adnan series were much stronger. That being said, it has its moments, specifically towards the end. Jessica Abughattas (based on this book only) seemed to me as one of those poets who can write wonderfully strong lines, but rarely have a full poem that amazes you as a whole!

<![CDATA[Foucault: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)]]> 44403372
In this Very Short Introduction Gary Gutting presents a wide-ranging but non-systematic exploration of some highlights of Foucault's life and thought. Beginning with a brief biography to set the social and political stage, he then tackles Foucault's thoughts on literature, in particular the avant-garde scene; his philosophical and historical work; his treatment of knowledge and power in modern society; and his thoughts on sexuality. This new edition includes feminist criticisms of Foucault's apparently sexist treatment of the Jouy case, as well as a new chapter offering a unified overview of the College de France lectures, now a major focus of interest in Foucault.

ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

The book is weirdly ordered, which makes it a bit hard to connect the dots, and also (even as a short introduction) it could cover more of the argumentations behind some of the ideas. But this one flaw aside, it is very well written, has made Foucault and his rather complex ideas quite understandable if you can eventually connect those dots, and keeps a balance between mentioning the critiques towards Foucault and explaining his brilliance in a non-biased way.

<![CDATA[City of Glass (The New York Trilogy, #1)]]> 432 City of Glass inaugurates an intriguing New York Trilogy of novels that The Washington Post Book World has classified as "post-existentialist private eye... It's as if Kafka has gotten hooked on the gumshoe game and penned his own ever-spiraling version." As a result of a strange phone call in the middle of the night, Quinn, a writer of detective stories, becomes enmeshed in a case more puzzling than any he might have written. Written with hallucinatory clarity, City of Glass combines dark humor with Hitchcock-like suspense.

Ghosts and The Locked Room are the next two brilliant installments in Paul Auster's The New York Trilogy.

Post-Modernism at its best. I really enjoyed the book, specifically it's peculiar narrator, at the same time omniscient and unreliable !! The parts that reads like a history book are particularly fascinating, given the nature of the book and how it tries to re-establish our understanding of time, history and reality. It was also fantastic when one character (Ironically named Paul Auster) gives a full speech about how he think the narrative of "Don Quixote" works, and how we as readers can see that it is an analogy for this novel itself.

Reading this in the social distancing world of Covid19 was a fortunate coincidence. I grew up in a literary culture heavily rooted in mysticism and theosophy, and this element in literature is always enjoyable for me, even as a secular person I am today. It was meticulously contemplative and amazingly innovative and the main subject was disease, death and the isolation that comes with it, and how these all connect you to the whole universe. It's not a long book and I highly recommend reading it to anyone with a poetic mind.

I have read the Persian translation countless times, and I finished the English one today. I cannot wait until the day I am able to read the original text. This is definitely one of the greatest and most meaningful works of fiction ever created. Its symbolism is so intricate that you find a new thing every time you read it over. This time, for example, I found out that snake throughout the whole story, is a symbol for death, and how fitting it was when he said that he always speaks in riddles and solves all of them as well. The simple and serene tone is also in perfect harmony with the content. I strongly recommend not just reading it, but making this reading a ritual of every few years.

<![CDATA[Phenomenology: An Introduction]]> 26515496
The first part of An Introduction to Phenomenology is an extended overview of the history and development of phenomenology, looking at its key thinkers, focusing particularly on Husserl, Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty, as well as its cultural and intellectual precursors. In the second half Chemero and Kaufer turn their attention to the contemporary interpretations and uses of phenomenology in cognitive science, showing that phenomenology is a living source of inspiration in contemporary interdisciplinary studies of the mind.

Kaufer and Chemero have written a clear, jargon-free account of phenomenology, providing abundant examples and anecdotes to illustrate and to entertain. This book is an ideal introduction to phenomenology and cognitive science for the uninitiated, as well as for philosophy and psychology students keen to deepen their knowledge.]]>

One of the best books I have read in the field of continental philosophy. While most books either give a very narrow and fragmented understanding of the subjects or make you more confused with their biased or incoherent explanations, this book makes one of the most complicated fields of philosophy and psychology, completely comprehensible without being afraid of going a little deep in the arguments and theories. The book shows you how Kantian Transcendental Idealism, Mixed with New approaches to psychology in the late 19th century (from Wundt to Freud), essentially gave birth not only to phenomenology but most other continental schools of thought, as well as modern psychology, cognitive science and even Artificial Intelligence.

Long Walk to Freedom 318431
Since his triumphant release in 1990 from more than a quarter-century of imprisonment, Mandela has been at the center of the most compelling and inspiring political drama in the world. As president of the African National Congress and head of South Africa's anti-apartheid movement, he was instrumental in moving the nation toward multiracial government and majority rule. He is revered everywhere as a vital force in the fight for human rights and racial equality.

The foster son of a Thembu chief, Mandela was raised in the traditional, tribal culture of his ancestors, but at an early age learned the modern, inescapable reality of what came to be called apartheid, one of the most powerful and effective systems of oppression ever conceived. In classically elegant and engrossing prose, he tells of his early years as an impoverished student and law clerk in a Jewish firm in Johannesburg, of his slow political awakening, and of his pivotal role in the rebirth of a stagnant ANC and the formation of its Youth League in the 1950s.

He describes the struggle to reconcile his political activity with his devotion to his family, the anguished breakup of his first marriage, and the painful separations from his children. He brings vividly to life the escalating political warfare in the fifties between the ANC and the government, culminating in his dramatic escapades as an underground leader and the notorious Rivonia Trial of 1964, at which he was sentenced to life imprisonment. Herecounts the surprisingly eventful twenty-seven years in prison and the complex, delicate negotiations that led both to his freedom and to the beginning of the end of apartheid. Finally he provides the ultimate inside account.]]>

This philosophy comprises an astonishing intellectual enterprise: a minute and ongoing investigation of the nature of power in society. The Diary of a Young Girl 48855
In 1942, with the Nazis occupying Holland, a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, the Franks and another family lived cloistered in the ¡°Secret Annexe¡± of an old office building. Cut off from the outside world, they faced hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters, and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period. By turns thoughtful, moving, and surprisingly humorous, her account offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self-portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman whose promise was tragically cut short.

<![CDATA[Desire in Language: A Semiotic Approach to Literature and Art]]> 821452 Desire in Language traces the path of an investigation, extending over a period of ten years, into the semiotics of literature and the arts. But the essays of Julia Kristeva in this volume, though they often deal with literature and art, do not amount to either "literary criticism" or "art criticism." Their concern, writes Kristeva, "remains intratheoretical: they are based on art and literature in order to subvert the very theoretical, philosophical, or semiological apparatus."

Probing beyond the discoveries of Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, Roman Jakobson, and others, Julia Kristeva proposes and tests theories centered on the nature and development of the novel, and on what she has defined as a signifying practice in poetic language and pictural works. Desire in Language fully shows what Roman Jakobson has called Kristeva's "genuine gift of questioning generally adopted 'axioms, ' and her contrary gift of releasing various 'damned questions' from their traditional question marks."]]>

This is what happens in this novella. And this last one is where this book really loses its reader.

<![CDATA[The Anxiety of Influence: A Theory of Poetry]]> 165081 The Anxiety of Influence has cast its long shadow of influence since it was first published in 1973. Through an insightful study of Romantic poets, Bloom puts forth his central vision of the relations between precursors and the individual artist. His argument that all literary texts are a strong misreading of those that precede them had an enormous impact on the practice of criticism and post-structuralist literary theory. The book remains a central work of criticism for all students of literature.

Written in a moving personal style, anchored by concrete examples, and memorable quotations, this second edition of Bloom's classic work maintains that the anxiety of influence cannot be evaded - neither by poets nor by responsible readers and critics. A new introduction, centering upon Shakespeare and Marlowe explains the genesis of Bloom's thinking, and the subsequent influence of the book on literary criticism of the past quarter of a century.]]>

Hippie 39731666 Hippie, his most autobiographical novel to date, Paulo Coelho takes us back in time to re-live the dream of a generation that longed for peace and dared to challenge the established social order ¨C authoritarian politics, conservative modes of behavior, excessive consumerism, and an unbalanced concentration of wealth and power.

Following the ¡°three days of peace and music¡± at Woodstock, the 1969 gathering in Bethel, NY that would change the world forever, hippie paradises began to emerge all around the world. In the Dam Square in Amsterdam, long-haired young people wearing vibrant clothes and burning incense could be found meditating, playing music and discussing sexual liberation, the expansion of consciousness and the search for an inner truth. They were a generation refusing to live the robotic and unquestioning life that their parents had known.

At this time, Paulo is a young, skinny Brazilian with a goatee and long, flowing hair who wants to become a writer. He sets off on a journey in search of freedom and a deeper meaning for his life: first, with a girlfriend, on the famous ¡°Death Train to Bolivia,¡± then on to Peru and later hitchhiking through Chile and Argentina.

His travels take him further, to the famous square in Amsterdam, where Paulo meets Karla, a Dutch woman also in her 20s. She convinces Paulo to join her on a trip to Nepal, aboard the Magic Bus that travels across Europe and Central Asia to Kathmandu. They embark on a journey in the company of fascinating fellow travelers, each of whom has a story to tell, and each of whom will undergo a transformation, changing their priorities and values, along the way. As they travel together, Paulo and Karla explore their own relationship, an awakening on every level that brings each of them to a choice and a decision that sets the course for their lives thereafter.]]>
