Er gibt jedoch nicht auf und versucht seine Krise, die prototypisch für die gesamte Generation ist, individuell zu lösen. Seinen verlorenen Posten im Krieg ersetzt er durch seine Vorstellung nun Soldat in der Armee des Lebens zu sein.
Sein Schicksal teilt er mit den beiden ehemaligen Kriegskameraden Lenz und Köster. Gemeinsam eröffnen sie eine Auto-Reparatur-Werkstatt. Zunächst läuft diese sehr erfolgreich, später muss sie jedoch wegen mangelnder Kundschaft geschlossen werden.
Auch im Privaten gehen die drei Freunde durch dick und dünn und versuchen die Fronterlebnisse, bei denen es um das nackte Überleben ging, gemeinsam zu besiegen. Ihre neue Lebenseinstellung nach dem Krieg und insbesondere der Alkohol hilft ihnen dabei. Die Bar wird zum wichtigen Lebensmittelpunkt, und der Rum hilft ihnen die traurige Realität zu durchbrechen.
Doch dann lernt Robby die Offizierstochter Pat kennen, und ihre Liebe gestaltet sich trotz der schlechten Verhältnisse und der vielen elendig dahinlebenden Menschen in ihrer Umgebung positiv. Ihre Liebe ist intensiv und schon bald wird Pat in den Kreis der drei Kameraden aufgenommen. Robby und Pat sind sich schnell einig, dass ihre Liebe das einzig sinnvolle, wahre und große in ihrem Leben ist. Sie trösten einander hinweg über die Sinnlosigkeit und die Vergänglichkeit des Lebens und stimmen darin überein, dass sie die Welt anders geschaffen hätten.
Das Gefühl der Vergänglichkeit und des Sterbenmüssens äußert sich besonders stark in der Ermordung von Lenz. Der politische Mord, begangen durch eine SA-Bande, zieht Rache nach sich. Die verbleibenden Kameraden töten die Mörder und Mitarbeiter des bedrohlichen Systems und sorgen selbst für eine angemessene Todesfeier für ihren Freund.
Doch auch die großartige und starke Liebe zwischen Robby und Pat soll nicht von langer Dauer sein, denn Pat kämpft bereits gegen den Tod. Durch einen Blutsturz und Erstickungsanfälle kündigt sich ihr naher Tod an.
