Aici intră în scenă Căpitanul, povestitorul suprem care aduce la viață istoria în această colecție amuzantă, inteligentă, brutal de onestă și directă de evenimente care s-au petrecut cu mult înainte ca vreunul dintre noi să se fi născut.

Dacă nu ți-a plăcut să înveți istorie când erai la școală, probabil că nu ai avut un profesor cum este Căpitanul. Inteligent, brutal de sincer și direct. Istoria nu mai e de rahat când o înveți de la el. Fiecare dintre cele 111 povești din carte creează o legătură între istorie și viața de zi cu zi datorită subiectelor familiare pe care le tratează și a unor perspective care nu pot fi descrise altfel decât „date naibii��.

Romanul conturează viaţa oamenilor simpli de la ţară, cu obiceiurile lor, cu frământările ş�� bucuriile lor, într-o societate în plină schimbare, toate văzute prin ochii personajului principal care îş�� dezvăluie trăirile ş�� se spovedeşte cititorului aşa cum ar face-o într-un jurnal, cu fiecare pagină ş�� drum parcurs în viaţă. In volumul de fata se regaseste si Codin, tradus de Panait Istrati in limba romana, cuprinzand cele trei povestiri: O noapte in balti, Codin si Kir Nicola, aparut postum in aprilie 1935.

„Panait Istrati venea in aparenta numai cu un capital de povestiri exotice. Era ca un fel de comoara, de 1001 de nopti, in editia moderna. […] Dar, subteran, era cu totul altceva: o capacitate de simtire adanca, rascolitoare, intr-o vreme de uscaciune generala. Panait Istrati a fost un om viu, un om adevarat, un autentic. Kir Nicola atinge o problemă din ce în ce mai actuală, cea a străinului care vrea să se integreze și mă bucură sinceritatea cu care e scrisă. Rar vedem și partea cealaltă, cum e să fii străin printre români și-abia aștept - poate peste câțiva ani - să citesc un roman scris de un sri lankez sau de un arab de-ai noștri.

Ciulinii Bărăganului a fost ca o coadă de topor în moalele capului. Trăisem pe lângă drama țăranului român și nu știam câte avusese de suferit pe vremea monarhiei, cu toate că monarhia e cel mai bun lucru care ni i s-a-ntâmplat. Cruzimea cu care a fost înnăbușit strigătul țăranilor e sfâșietoare și departe de imaginea idilică pe care o aveam înainte.

Și ca un post scriptum, aș vrea s-adaug că, din păcate, Istrati e infinit mai cunoscut și mai apreciat în Franța. Sper să se repare nedreptatea asta și să fie inclus în programa școlară pe viitor.

Codin e una dintre cele mai dure povești citite vreodată, e atâta tristețe-n povestea asta c-aproape am regretat c-am citit-o. Mi-a amintit de unul dintre eseurile lui Montaigne despre prietenie, despre de La Boétie. Atât Montaigne cât și Istrati vorbesc sincer despre prietenie ca formă de iubire cu mult înainte de valul acesta nou de apreciere pentru prietenie - mai ales în rândul bărbaților.

Kir Nicola atinge o problemă din ce în ce mai actuală, cea a străinului care vrea să se integreze și mă bucură sinceritatea cu care e scrisă. Ideea genială, dar nu și execuția. Păcat, mai ales că unele povești sunt bine închegate, iar fotografiile chiar ajută. I-aș fi dat mai multe stele dac-ar fi acceptat ajutorul unui editor căruia să nu-i scape formele de singular de la perfectul simplu.

Niciun rând nu e de prisos și, pe lângă pățaniile și suferințele de război, ai și momente de reflecție profundă despre lucruri pe care (sper că) nu ai cum să le trăiești: „Zece săptămâni am făcut instrucție cazonă. În acest timp am fost transformați mai radical decât în zece ani de școală. Am învățat că un nasture bine lustruit are mai multă însemnătate decât patru volume de Schopenhauer. La început mirați, apoi scârbiți și în cele din urmă indiferenți, ne-am dat seama că nu spiritul se află pe primul plan, ci peria de ghete; nu ideea, ci sistemul; nu libertatea, ci instrucția cazonă. Cu entuziasm și voie bună am devenit soldați; dar s-a făcut totul pentru a alunga din noi și entuziasmul și voia bună.��

Relațiile sunt analizate cu ochi fin de sociolog/psiholog/antropolog: „Asta vine de la sine pentru că, la drept vorbind, omul nu e în primul rând decât un animal, uns pe deasupra cu puțină civilizație, ca o felie de pâine cu untură. Și-o iau cei trei cu vârf și-ndesat, așa cum și-o merită, mai ales că trupa nu duce lipsă de ingeniozitate și-ai zice pe-alocuri că tinerii-s plecați în tabără cu școala.

Am lăsat la final ce era mai bun, ce m-a înduioșat cel mai tare. Citești Octavian Paler când vrei să ai o conversație onestă cu tine însuți, când îți acccepti înfrângerile și te întrebi de ce și pentru ce te zbați. Paler îți dă ocazia de a realiza că ești mai mult decât suma întâmplărilor prin care ai trecut și a emoțiilor pe care le-ai simțit, îți extinde existența dincolo de azi, de ieri și de mâine.
N-am cunoscut vreodată un maestru mai bun al luminii și al culorilor: "Lumina curgea ca un ulei galben pe coaja merilor rămași fără frunze și înroșiți de primele vânturi reci." Paler scrie tablouri peste tablouri, ai putea să îți pui citate ca cel de mai sus pe pereți înrămate pe post de tablouri.

Cartea asta mi-a lăsat impresia unui eseu lingvistic despre semnificația numerelor și a conceptelor matematice de bază. De exemplu, știm acum că niciun copil nu e tabula rasa, ci că nevoia de structură (sintaxă) e înnăscută. La fel, ne naștem cu nevoia de diferențiere a numerelor (și nu suntem singurii care facem distincția între un fruct și două fructe, un bol de mâncare mai mic ori mai mare etc). Deși acum pot părea intuitive ideile astea, de fapt sunt revoluționare istoric vorbind.

Felicitări traducătorilor, textul curge așa de lin încât nici n-ai ști că citești o traducere.


Cartea asta mi-a lăsat impresia unui eseu lingvistic despre semnificația numerelor și a conceptelor matematice de bază. De exemplu, știm acum că niciun copil nu e tabula rasa, ci că nevoia de structură (sintaxă) e înnăscută. La fel, ne naștem cu nevoia de diferențiere a numerelor (și nu suntem singurii care facem distincția între un fruct și două fructe, un bol de mâncare mai mic ori mai mare etc). Deși acum pot părea intuitive ideile astea, de fapt sunt revoluționare istoric vorbind.

Revenind la poveste, intrarea în scenă de care aminteam e magistrală și o poți compara cu orice film bun (vezi Diavolul se îmbracă de la Prada, în care ai una dintre cele mai bune intrări-prezentări ale personajelor, executate admirabil pe modelul show don't tell).

Personajele au un farmec aparte care e sprijinit și de cadrul în care se desfășoară și nu o dată cadrul are ceva din opulența din Marele Gatsby. Când te gândești că acțiunea se desfășoară în vreme de război fără însă a-i vedea ororile, deja îți spui că ai de-a face cu o carte-film.

Una dintre cele mai bune cărți ever scrise. De la cum e introdus în scenă personajul principal, până la cadru istoric, intrigă, amănunte și dialoguri, cartea asta e o capodoperă de stil și narațiune. Rar întâlnești un autor care stăpânește deopotrivă povestea și dialogul or Rodica Ojog-Brasoveanu excelează în ambele. Că are elemente ce pot fi considerate neverosimile e greu de negat, dar dacă nu frizează ilogicul, atunci știi că poți accepta ca adevărate multe. În fond ce e literatura dacă nu o suspendare momentară a realității pentru o alta, închipuită de altul?

It boggles me how little recognition this book gets. It's as big a masterpiece as 100 Years of Solitude is. The characters are fully fleshed, each with their own lingo, mannerisms, proclivities and back stories. Although fictional, everything in this novel is accurate in the sense it mimics reality so well the make believe is perfect.

Way too pessimistic for my liking. All these people lamenting their life and feeling disgust at themselves or their loved ones for seemingly no reason at all. Marcelle is the only character whose malaise I can understand because of her predicament but Mathieu simply wants his cake and eat it too. Comfortably set in a burgeois lifestyle Mathieu laments his lack of freedom while enjoying a steady paycheck. Utter nonsense!

First off, I want to clarify something. What I read was the Romanian translation, Jurnalul Annei Frank, translated by C.Toiu. I think Mr Toiu did an excellent job, and the translation never felt like one. From start to finish I was under the impression that it was a teenager speaking to me about her dreams, hopes, friendships and hardships.
Anne had an eye for detail and every seemingly trivial aspect of her and her family's life was put under the microscope. For example she tells in great detail how they washed every day, each in the privacy of another room: Dad in the study, Mum in the kitchen and so on.
Nonetheless, oftentimes she reflects on the tragedy of innocent victims without pity for herself. The book reads more like a personal account than a self-help book, and, since the self-help part is the least developed, the title should be reworded to reflect the content. My biggest takeaway was to focus more on projects, keep my mind occupied and switch from self-criticism to a work-in-progress type of outlook. There are, however, a lot of great insights in this book (some of which I've copied below), which explains the high score I gave.

The writing is as witty as it is poetic and reminded me of both David Lodge and Zora Neale Hurston. Although the metaphors are as fresh and crisp as last night's snow, there was something amiss, and while the main character was in sharp focus from beginning to end, the other characters showed up briefly from time to time and, by the time they were reintroduced in the next scene, I had already forgotten who they were and how they were connected to the main character.

Disclaimer 2: Some of the figures seemed too elaborate in some parts but lacking in others. The book is very well-written, well-referenced, and presents a unique point of you: one gets fat not because of a high calorie diet but because of high insulin levels. The author makes a compelling case explaining how high levels of insulin promote insulin resistance and hence weightgain. Overall an excellent book with plenty of interesting insights and great to use as reference or reminder. Fasting may not work for some people at all (myself included) but the book itself brings a fresh perspective, which is why I gave it five stars.

This is the best, most clinical biopsy of pain I've ever read, written with such surgical precision it's left me speechless. Both observer and observee, Eleanor filters reality through the highly vigilant and both objective and subjective lens of the words she chooses, which makes the novel the epitome of stylistic and linguistic discourse genius. I believe Mr Honeyman's novel will become a classic. In fact, I'd be most surprised if it weren't used to teach good writing to aspiring authors already. This novel is undoubtedly one of the finest pieces of literature ever written.

There was a movie (can't remember the title) where the main character was supposedly a very intelligent woman - we learn that not by seeing her in action, or hearing her deductions at least, but because of her husband telling her "you're the most intelligent woman I know". And guess what? She kept making very bad decisions over and over for no reason whatsoever so her being intelligent was illogical and, quite frankly, just showed bad writing/scripting to me. And that is why, my book-loving friends, I could not give this book a better score.

- don't give away your ideas unless you gain something in exchange (promotion, status, recognition, etc.) or you are paid for them

What I liked most about the book is that it is less philosophical and is more like a workbook. The mistakes are explained in a clear manner and the coaching tips are straightforward and easy to follow.

Am oscilat între trei și patru stele pentru că m-a dezamăgit lipsa reproducerilor măcar a desenelor din scrisori dacă nu și a tablourilor. Dar apoi mi-am dat seama că pe de o parte ar fi fost nevoie de și mai multe permisiuni pe care e posibil ca autoarea să nu le fi cerut/putut obține, iar pe de altă parte cartea nu este doar despre Vincent, ci este despre legătura dintre cei doi frați, după cum scrie și în titlu. Or, dat fiind că această carte are ca subiect principal legătura dintre Vincent și Theo, am revenit asupra punctajului inițial și am acordat cinci stele pentru că aflăm așa de multe despre familia lor, despre legământul lor, despre prietenia așa de frumoasă dintre ei. Este poate cea mai frumoasă poveste despre iubirea dintre cei doi frați și despre cât de uniți au fost ei în fața unui destin tragic. Ultimele pagini ale cărții sunt de o duioșie nemărginita și arată dragostea cu care a fost scrisă această carte.

Oh how I loved this book! The writing flows, the chapters are well separated into topics and we get a glimpse into the life of one of the best sopranos that ever graced us with her voice and presence.
I really liked the length at which the author speaks about her childhood, her stage performances, her repertoire, the people in her life and her inspiration. Maia Morgenstern se naste la Bucuresti, pe 1 mai 1962. Incheie studiile de licenta la IATC in 1985, la clasa lui Dem Radulescu. Este repartizata la Teatrul Tineretului din Piatra Neamt, apoi revine la Bucuresti, unde joaca la Teatrul Evreiesc de Stat si la Teatrul National. Realizeaza proiecte artistice de anvergura, atat in teatru, cat si in film, alaturi de Lucian Pintilie, Liviu Ciulei, Andrei Serban, Theo Angelopoulos, Marta Meszaros, Mel Gibson. Pe scena TNB se remarca in spectacole precum O trilogie antica, dupa Euripide si Seneca, Dama cu camelii dupa Al. Dumas fiul, Vizita batranei doamne de F. Durrenmatt. La TES, unde este si manager, din anul 2012, interpreteaza roluri remarcabile, in productii ca Asta seara: Lola Blau de G. Kreisler sau Jocul regilor de P. Kohout. Colaboreaza cu teatre din tara si de peste hotare, iar printre filmele cele mai importante sunt Balanta, Cel mai iubit dintre pamanteni sau Patimile lui Hristos. A fost distinsa cu Premiul pentru cea mai buna actrita la Festivalul Emma, Premiul Felix al Academiei Europene de Film, Premiul UNITER pentru cea mai buna actrita, Ordinul Artelor si Literelor in grad de Cavaler, in Franta, Ordinul Regal ,,Nihil Sine Deo". Parlamentul European de la Strasbourg o desemneaza, in anul 2003, Actrita si Femeia anului. In 2018 devine Cetatean de onoare al Municipiului Bucuresti si este decorata de catre Presedintele Romaniei cu Ordinul National pentru Merit in grad de Mare Ofiter.

Romanul o are în prim-plan pe Letiţia Branea (cea mai longevivă eroină a acestui univers artistic ş�� protagonista, astfel, a unei trilogii), aflată, acum, în imediata actualitate ş�� sosită la Bucureşti din Occidentul în care trăieşte (cu alte cuvinte, avînd statut de migrantă).

Ça fait assez longtemps que je n'ai rien lu en français, mais ce livre m'a vite rappelé pourquoi j'avais tant aimé la littérature française comme le dit Mme Rowling "half my lifetime ago". L'atmosphère pesante du village et le travail abrutissant des hommes à l'usine rappellent Zola mais ceci n'est pas du Zola - s'il l'était, je ne l'aurais pas lu. Le village ici est un des personnages-clefs, le toil dont se fabrique le fil narratif, et la raison pour laquelle Eddy veut en finir avec soi-même. En dépit de ou grace au language honnête, aux réalités non dissimulées, aux dialogues durs les personnages se distinguent bien les uns des autres. Abrutie par la misère, la famille d'Eddy ne peut pas s'en sauver, tout comme dans un roman d'Hardy. Eddy en échange, est assez différent pour pouvoir s'échapper au village, à son monde cruel a priori, ce qui fait de ce roman un roman de formation. Et quel mieux façon de s'échapper sinon par l'art? Un très beau roman, j'espère bien lire un autre roman par le même auteur.

Oh what a treat, excellent narrative beautifully delivered, what a roller coaster of emotions! The characters are sketched just enough so that you can picture them as living human beings with their own stories to tell, dramatic intense moments but never over the top, and all this constructed in a beautiful hero's journey - as indeed almost all characters go through some transformation, one way or the other.
How the author managed to put together all these characters - each with their unique lingo, behaviour and story - in just one story and make them work is mind-blowing. A true literary masterpiece, I am still in awe, might reread it very soon, can't seem to get enough of it!

You make do with what you have".
Interestingly enough (sorry for this one, couldn't come up with a less obnoxious phrase), the author shines in Chapter Four, which is as good an essay on writing as any other (famous or not so famous). Actually, please allow me to get back on this one and rewrite it: Chapter Four is a very good essay on the art of writing, and my all time favorite so far. The author breaks the art of writing down into three key elements (won't divulge them here). OK, I'll reveal one of them, which is talent. Also in Chapter Four is an excerpt that blew my mind "Everybody uses their mind when they think. But a writer puts on an outfit called narrative and thinks with his entire being [...]"

I almost gave this book a 4-star rating instead of a 5 just because there have been other books that I enjoyed more. However, part of me thought that would've been unfair since this book delivered on its promise and is indeed first and foremost a memoir of the author's journey into running.

The intro to this book is extraordinary: how a kid learns an important life lesson from his father. The main character is introduced very nicely (as a writer's technique) and he has the allure of a down-to-earth hero who happens to be in a unique situation.
On his journey, the hero gets to meet interesting characters and finds himself in interesting situations.
Nonetheless, I couldn't enjoy the book as much as I wished, something was amiss, haven't figured out what yet, hence the lower rating. Others might enjoy it tremendously though.

Primul lucru și poate evident e faptul că nu se lungește inutil. Dacă vrem să fim cinstiți cu noi înșine până la capăt, hai să mărturisim că de multe ori sărim descrirerile prelungite, că excesul de detalii ne încarcă într-atâta imaginația încât "sărim din carte" și gândurile o iau aiurea.
Al doilea fapt -de prea puține ori menționat și observat- e SUPERBA RELAȚIE A CUPLULUI DOAMNA LILI-MISU ETICI, cel mai simpatic cuplu ever. Aici autoarea e de-a dreptul genială: dialogurile sunt savuroase (- "Chiar, dragă, ce-o fi făcut?-O gafă, bineînțeles. Precis a dormit la ea. Toanta! Degeaba am dăscălit-o."), iar descrierile sunt fantastice ("Doamna Lili, binedispusă-o stare de spirit constantă, generată de o digestie excelentă și o oglindă care, deși cadou de nuntă, rămânea mereu amabilă [...]").
E imposibil să nu-i adori pe cei doi și să nu speri că vei ajunge ca ei, pensionari fericiți cărora li se fâlfâie de autoflagelarea unui program riguros care nu-și are rostul, cum bine "le zice" autoarea.
Al treilea lucru care se observă și în alte romane ale autoarei e cât de bine e conturat personajul Valentinei în contextul libertății de după Revoluție. Am râs cu lacrimi dar m-a și înduioșat pasajul în care își pregătește casa pentru vizită și, chiar dacă nu sunt menționate, parcă am văzut macrameul cu pește de pe televizor și punga cu pungi bine dosită într-un colț de dulap.
Am venit pentru o carte polițistă și am primit în schimb personaje și contexte superb conturate și de aceea intriga de data aceasta a fost pentru mine în plan secundar.

Una dintre puținele cărți pe care le-am recitit vreodată. Tre' să mărturisesc de la început că de fiecare dată când o găsesc în librării o mai cumpăr ca să o fac cadou. De ce? Pentru că e foarte potrivită pentru mofturoșii care zic că n-au timp de citit. Nonsense! :) Pe-asta o termini seara într-o zi de lucru. E imposibil să o lași din mână (cu excepția cazului în care îți cere mâța de mâncare, singura excepție plauzibilă :)).
Iar aici intervine discuția: ce face cartea asta atât de bună?
Primul lucru și poate evident e faptul că nu se lungește inutil. Dacă vrem să fim cinstiți cu noi înșine până la capăt, hai să mărturisim că de multe ori sărim descrirerile prelungite, că excesul de detalii ne încarcă într-atâta imaginația încât "sărim din carte" și gândurile o iau aiurea.
Al doilea fapt -de prea puține ori menționat și observat- e SUPERBA RELAȚIE A CUPLULUI DOAMNA LILI-MISU ETICI, cel mai simpatic cuplu ever. Aici autoarea e de-a dreptul genială: dialogurile sunt savuroase (- "Chiar, dragă, ce-o fi făcut?-O gafă, bineînțeles. Precis a dormit la ea. Toanta! Degeaba am dăscălit-o."), iar descrierile sunt fantastice ("Doamna Lili, binedispusă-o stare de spirit constantă, generată de o digestie excelentă și o oglindă care, deși cadou de nuntă, rămânea mereu amabilă [...]").
E imposibil să nu-i adori pe cei doi și să nu speri că vei ajunge ca ei, pensionari fericiți cărora li se fâlfâie de autoflagelarea unui program riguros care nu-și are rostul, cum bine "le zice" autoarea.
Al treilea lucru care se observă și în alte romane ale autoarei e cât de bine e conturat personajul Valentinei în contextul libertății de după Revoluție. Am râs cu lacrimi dar m-a și înduioșat pasajul în care își pregătește casa pentru vizită și, chiar dacă nu sunt menționate, parcă am văzut macrameul cu pește de pe televizor și punga cu pungi bine dosită într-un colț de dulap.
Am venit pentru o carte polițistă și am primit în schimb personaje și contexte superb conturate și de aceea intriga de data aceasta a fost pentru mine în plan secundar.
Autoarea are un har nemaipomenit într-ale scrisului și e o plăcere să citești și să recitești cărți ca aceasta.

I also liked the tips in chapter six (I won't spoil the fun of discovering them) and the appendix which gives examples of the PARE (I won't give away too many details as this is a review, not a summary) in popular culture - books and movies.
Since this book hasn't been written for entertainment (although it's very enjoyable), time will tell if it has had any effect as I need to practice the tips for a while, but something did change: I don't pay as much attention to the negative stuff anymore (and by that I mean the trivial stuff: people not cleaning after their dogs, driving with the healdights off in the rain) and now that I've said it (wrote it), it looks like the book has already had a positive effect on me.

If memory serves, this is the author's first book and as such, it is truly a masterpiece. The story in itself is captivating and so are the characters. In a sense Carrie is doomed from the start, and I felt bad for her in the end. I know it's fiction but part of me thinks this tale is about bullying and how little we know of what happens behind closed doors.

Am venit pentru fizică și am rămas pentru stil. O carte excelentă, tradusă superb de Vlad Zografi. Pentru umaniști, unele concepte din fizică pot părea aride, nu cred că s-a exaltat vreodată vreun umanist calculând forța frecării pe un plan înclinat. Însă pentru un umanist fizica din secolul XX este teribil de interesantă pentru că redevine filosofie și repune în prim-plan întrebări precum: ce este timpul? ce este spațiul? ce este materia?

I wished I liked this book more. What I had imagined judging by the title was a mix of sciency stuff explained in a playful manner and personal anecdotes about how the author came up with brilliant ideas. Before reading the book I had imagined scenarios such as him eating his cheerios in the morning and then realizing "wow, this is how atoms move, like cereal in milk", and such. Truth be told, I was expecting a writing style similar to David Lodge's so of course I was disappointed.
Nevertheless, I was disappointed simply because my expectations were too high. Maybe this is one of the best books written by a physicist, so I only have myself to blame for not liking it more.
Some of the anecdotes were slightly funny I guess, but would have probably been more so if only they had been delivered differently.
What I did like about this book was his childhood memories coupled with the last pages on how it is one's duty as a scientist to never lie. Am trăit alături de personajul principal care îmi amintea cumva de Foamea și de Tinerețea lui Adrian Zografi. Acum, la mai bine de o lună de când am citit această carte, îmi amintesc frânturi aievea, ca prin vis. Scrisul e cinematograifc, am văzut sanatoriul deși autorul nu l-a creionat decât atât cât era nevoie: populat cu alte personaje ciudate, cu ferestre meschine, cu camere neștiute de nimeni.

A very enjoyable book, where adjectives are used sparingly making them more important in the process. The author recreates an entire world, Changi, complete with its own rules, its weather and its own share of experiences. And as with any world and any situation presented you start asking yourself: given the same circumstances, would I be more like the King or more like Marlowe? Regardless of how one might answer this underlying question, one cannot help to admire this masterpiece which, even more surprisingly, is also Clavel's first novel.

Astfel s-a născut ideea volumului coordonat de Vintilă Mihăilescu, mai întîi ca replică reflexivă la cartea lui Lucian Boia, dar care să meargă mai departe de polemicile mai mult sau mai puţin efemere. Rezultatul este că, motivaţi de o reticenţă principială ş�� strategică faţă de fenomenul public al excepţionalismului românesc, antropologi, sociologi, politologi, istorici, universitari ş�� cercetători încearcă să răspundă la întrebarea „De ce este România astfel?��.

Colecția de articole-răspuns la eseul lui Lucian Boia "De ce este România altfel?" cuprinde mai multe opinii atent argumentate dintre care cel mai mult mi-a plăcut "La marginea imperiilor, la intersecția lumilor. Un excepționalism geopolitic românesc?" de Valentin Naumescu. Autorul explică foarte bine care sunt decalajele principale față de restul Uniunii Europene: de dezvoltare economică (tehnologie înapoiată), de dezvoltare socială (populație rurală încă majoritară în '89), de infrastructura, de dezvoltare a socitetatii civile și, nu în ultimul rând, corupția. De asemenea, acesta explică și cum aderarea la NATO a cântărit decisiv în favoarea intrării României în Uniune.
Și celelalte articole tratează subiecte interesante precum BOR și erodarea încrederii, eugenismul românesc sau demitizarea interbelicului.

Or ajutorul primit astfel poate face diferența de destine, mai ales în momentele cruciale.
Pe lângă personajele care îi sunt simpatice autorul, se întâmplă să fie și personaje care îi displac profund - vezi cazul enigmatic al Mandei Y, personaj pe care nu am reușit să îl identific. Alții care sunt antisemiți "pe față" nu au parte de atâta critică, ceea ce mi se pare nedrept.
Dar, lăsând la o parte aceste considerații, cartea e o poveste frumoasă, scrisă cu multă candoare.
Avem în primul rând un personaj central care vrea să facă bine refugiaților români din Franța, care riscau enorm să scape de Ceaușescu. Și aici, din fericire, vechile relații, contează enorm în luptă cu birocrația franceză și diplomația sovietică.
Registrul se schimbă mult în aventura africană, aventură ce durează 23 de ani și se desfășoară în Niger, la al cărui minister de externe lucra autorul. Și aici îl îndrăgești când îți povestește cum redacta nu doar discursul președintelui, dar și alte discursuri uneori încrucișate. Când citești ce încurcături se pot naște fie și la așezarea mesenilor la dineu constați că tot ce ține de protocol e infinit mai complicat decât poate părea.
Din tabloul roșiatic al nisipului african se disting doi copii care cerșeau în fața poștei vechi, unul slabang, iar celălalt suferind de pe urmă leprei. E dureros și emoționant pasajul.
Aventura africană se încheie climatic cu o călătorie prin Sahara, unde, văzând un cer de un albastru foarte închis și plin de stele cu "boltă [...] se închide în jurul nostru "Cred că am fost, o clipă, oul primitiv în extaz, descopering cu o teamă confuză cât de mic și de neputincios era el."
După un intermezzo parizian autorul se întoarce în țară și e șocat de mineriadă, de construcțiile noi din materiale de proastă calitate, de faptul că "nimeni nu zâmbea pe stradă" și de phallusul valah.
Per total, cartea e cu atât mai valoaroasă cu cât e ajută să înțelegi urmările colonizării franceze, atât de diferită de cea engleză și ai prilejul de a afla mai multe despre popoarele din Niger (despre fulani, tuaregi, djerma) și cutumele lor, de a cunoaște, dacă nu ai ascultat vreodată Europa liberă, mișcarea de rezistentă a diasporei sub comunism.
Din această carte ai ocazia să înveți și istorie și geografie, mai ales dacă ai urât în școală lecțiile alea plicticoase cu mai multe cifre decât la matematică, și să vizitezi cu ochii minții locuri pe care altfel nu ai avea cum să le vezi.

La început ai impresia că citești un roman balzacian cu personaje dâmbovițene; n-am stat să număr, dar cred că sunt mai bine de 100 de personaje, creionate succint, cu vădită simpatie față de cei "de famiie bună". Transpare cumva un elitism ciudat pentru un cititor din familie modestă, care nu-și cunoaște arborele genealogic și nici nu a crescut alături de copii de vechi boieri.

Fiind scrisă ca un jurnal, cartea aceasta e greu de rezumat, ceea ce o face deopotrivă de fascinantă și de greu de urmărit. E nevoie de răbdare și pauze ca înțelesul să se desprindă dintre rânduri, nu îți sare în față ca o melodie pe care o fredonezi ușor după.
Liiceanu povestește cu multă candoare când despre fiul sau, când despre lichelele care nu doar că dispar după '89, ci bat cu avânt muncitoresc studiourile televiziunilor (Vadim și Păunescu), când despre cuplul șarmant Monica (Lovinescu)-Virgil, când depre amintirile de la Păltiniș cu Noica ori venirea Majistatii Sale în țară.
Traducerea lui Heidegger ocupă un loc aparte în acest jurnal și explicația este foarte frumoasă "[...] ce anume desparte filozofia de literatură: filozofia presupune codul, pe când literatura stilul".
Pe de altă parte, "Cuvintele au cel mai mic efect acolo unde sunt cel mai bine spuse: în scris". Ușa interzisă, ca orice jurnal, rămâne o ușă care se poate deschide oricând, dar și interzisă. Rămâne întrebarea: interzisă cui, autorului sau cititorului? ]]> 4.03 2002

No matter your own life story, you will love this book so much you won't be able to put it down until you've finished it.
This novel is a first-person account of the transition from boyhood into adulthood and the main character is a little boy called Amir who grows up in a prosperous neighbourhood of Kabul, Afghanistan. Amir tells his story with honesty and without self-pity. Just like in a roman de formation he tries hard to do the right thing, to redeem himself for something he did or maybe better put didn't do as a child.
As we follow him along (now an adult) to the US and then back to an Afghanistan occupied by the talibans, we get to learn more about afghan culture, tradition and way of life. It was harrowing and heartbreaking to see the effects of the taliban occupation over what used to be a vibrant, lively society.
Hosseini is one of the best storytellers our there and The Kite Runner is a wonderful story.

This has been my first thriller by a French author and I have chosen it because it had great review on a similar site. In the beginning I was really excited: a psychological investigator who suffers from bouts of sleep sounded interesting enough to pique my interest. Nonetheless, later on I thought the author chose this as a mere literary device which allowed him to play tricks on our imagination. There were points where I had no idea what to believe: was it all just a dream or did it really happen? Case in point: she wakes up from a long sleep with bruises on her. She even goes to the doctor (if memory serves) to have them checked. However, it later turns out that it had been a figment of her vivid imagination, even though to her it all seemed so real. For some reason, towards the end of the book the plot thickened even further by adding new characters but it was too late for me to keep me interested. The writing itself is very good, with quirky analogies thrown in for good measure. Even though the plot itself wasn't truly believable, the author has a lot of potential and I'll definitely read some more of his books in future.
