All leaders are constrained by geography. Their choices are limited by mountains, rivers, seas and concrete. Yes, to follow world events you need to understand people, ideas and movements - but if you don't know geography, you'll never have the full picture.

If you've ever wondered why Putin is so obsessed with Crimea, why the USA was destined to become a global superpower, or why China's power base continues to expand ever outwards, the answers are all here.

In ten chapters and ten maps, Prisoners of Geography looks at the past, present and future to offer an essential insight into one of the major factors that determines world history.

It's time to put the 'geo' back into geopolitics.

Ten maps; ten chapters:

Russia * China * United States of America * Latin America * the Middle East * Africa * India and Pakistan * Europe * Japan and Korea * the Arctic

Murakami did a great job setting up the mysterious story about two characters who are full of confusion about which world they are living in and what they are living for. I adore Murakami for his broad knowledge about classic music, books, religion, and history, based on which he brings to his books with imaginative description and incredibly interesting and deep perspective. Although there are some repetition in this book, I think the book deserves a 5-star rating. Can't wait to finish the other two books in this series.

<![CDATA[Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents]]> 51152447 The Warmth of Other Suns examines the unspoken caste system that has shaped America and shows how our lives today are still defined by a hierarchy of human divisions.

¡°As we go about our daily lives, caste is the wordless usher in a darkened theater, flashlight cast down in the aisles, guiding us to our assigned seats for a performance. The hierarchy of caste is not about feelings or morality. It is about power¡ªwhich groups have it and which do not.¡±

In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings.

Beyond race, class, or other factors, there is a powerful caste system that influences people¡¯s lives and behavior and the nation¡¯s fate. Linking the caste systems of America, India, and Nazi Germany, Wilkerson explores eight pillars that underlie caste systems across civilizations, including divine will, bloodlines, stigma, and more. Using riveting stories about people¡ªincluding Martin Luther King, Jr., baseball¡¯s Satchel Paige, a single father and his toddler son, Wilkerson herself, and many others¡ªshe shows the ways that the insidious undertow of caste is experienced every day. She documents how the Nazis studied the racial systems in America to plan their out-cast of the Jews; she discusses why the cruel logic of caste requires that there be a bottom rung for those in the middle to measure themselves against; she writes about the surprising health costs of caste, in depression and life expectancy, and the effects of this hierarchy on our culture and politics. Finally, she points forward to ways America can move beyond the artificial and destructive separations of human divisions, toward hope in our common humanity.]]>

<![CDATA[The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon]]> 17660462 The definitive story of Amazon.com, one of the most successful companies in the world, and of its driven, brilliant founder, Jeff Bezos.

Amazon.com started off delivering books through the mail. But its visionary founder, Jeff Bezos, wasn't content with being a bookseller. He wanted Amazon to become the everything store, offering limitless selection and seductive convenience at disruptively low prices. To do so, he developed a corporate culture of relentless ambition and secrecy that's never been cracked. Until now. Brad Stone enjoyed unprecedented access to current and former Amazon employees and Bezos family members, giving readers the first in-depth, fly-on-the-wall account of life at Amazon. Compared to tech's other elite innovators--Jobs, Gates, Zuckerberg--Bezos is a private man. But he stands out for his restless pursuit of new markets, leading Amazon into risky new ventures like the Kindle and cloud computing, and transforming retail in the same way Henry Ford revolutionized manufacturing.

The Everything Store will be the revealing, definitive biography of the company that placed one of the first and largest bets on the Internet and forever changed the way we shop and read.]]>

<![CDATA[Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup]]> 37976541 The full inside story of the breathtaking rise and shocking collapse of a multibillion-dollar startup, by the prize-winning journalist who first broke the story and pursued it to the end in the face of pressure and threats from the CEO and her lawyers.

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the female Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup "unicorn" promised to revolutionize the medical industry with a machine that would make blood tests significantly faster and easier. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at $9 billion, putting Holmes's worth at an estimated $4.7 billion. There was just one problem: The technology didn't work.

For years, Holmes had been misleading investors, FDA officials, and her own employees. When Carreyrou, working at The Wall Street Journal, got a tip from a former Theranos employee and started asking questions, both Carreyrou and the Journal were threatened with lawsuits. Undaunted, the newspaper ran the first of dozens of Theranos articles in late 2015. By early 2017, the company's value was zero and Holmes faced potential legal action from the government and her investors. Here is the riveting story of the biggest corporate fraud since Enron, a disturbing cautionary tale set amid the bold promises and gold-rush frenzy of Silicon Valley.]]>

Dare to Lead 40109367 In her #1 NYT bestsellers, Bren¨¦ Brown taught us what it means to dare greatly, rise strong and brave the wilderness. Now, based on new research conducted with leaders, change makers and culture shifters, she¡¯s showing us how to put those ideas into practice so we can step up and lead.

Leadership is not about titles, status and power over people. Leaders are people who hold themselves accountable for recognising the potential in people and ideas, and developing that potential. This is a book for everyone who is ready to choose courage over comfort, make a difference and lead.

When we dare to lead, we don't pretend to have the right answers; we stay curious and ask the right questions. We don't see power as finite and hoard it; we know that power becomes infinite when we share it and work to align authority and accountability. We don't avoid difficult conversations and situations; we lean into the vulnerability that¡¯s necessary to do good work.

But daring leadership in a culture that's defined by scarcity, fear and uncertainty requires building courage skills, which are uniquely human. The irony is that we're choosing not to invest in developing the hearts and minds of leaders at the same time we're scrambling to figure out what we have to offer that machines can't do better and faster. What can we do better? Empathy, connection and courage to start.

Bren¨¦ Brown spent the past two decades researching the emotions that give meaning to our lives. Over the past seven years, she found that leaders in organisations ranging from small entrepreneurial start-ups and family-owned businesses to non-profits, civic organisations and Fortune 50 companies, are asking the same questions:

How do you cultivate braver, more daring leaders? And, how do you embed the value of courage in your culture?

Dare to Lead answers these questions and gives us actionable strategies and real examples from her new research-based, courage-building programme.

Bren¨¦ writes, ¡®One of the most important findings of my career is that courage can be taught, developed and measured. Courage is a collection of four skill sets supported by twenty-eight behaviours. All it requires is a commitment to doing bold work, having tough conversations and showing up with our whole hearts. Easy? No. Choosing courage over comfort is not easy. Worth it? Always. We want to be brave with our lives and work. It's why we're here.¡¯]]>

USA TODAY
BESTSELLER

Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google are the four most influential companies on the planet. Just about everyone thinks they know how they got there. Just about everyone is wrong.

For all that's been written about the Four over the last two decades, no one has captured their power and staggering success as insightfully as Scott Galloway.

Instead of buying the myths these compa-nies broadcast, Galloway asks fundamental questions. How did the Four infiltrate our lives so completely that they're almost impossible to avoid (or boycott)? Why does the stock market forgive them for sins that would destroy other firms? And as they race to become the world's first trillion-dollar company, can anyone chal-lenge them?

In the same irreverent style that has made him one of the world's most celebrated business professors, Galloway deconstructs the strategies of the Four that lurk beneath their shiny veneers. He shows how they manipulate the fundamental emotional needs that have driven us since our ancestors lived in caves, at a speed and scope others can't match. And he reveals how you can apply the lessons of their ascent to your own business or career.

Whether you want to compete with them, do business with them, or simply live in the world they dominate, you need to understand the Four.]]>

The Bell Jar 11061699 I was supposed to be having the time of my life.

When Esther Greenwood wins an internship on a New York fashion magazine in 1953, she is elated, believing she will finally realise her dream to become a writer. But in between the cocktail parties and piles of manuscripts, Esther's life begins to slide out of control. She finds herself spiralling into depression and eventually a suicide attempt, as she grapples with difficult relationships and a society which refuses to take women's aspirations seriously.

The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath's only novel, was originally published in 1963 under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas. The novel is partially based on Plath's own life and descent into mental illness, and has become a modern classic. The Bell Jar has been celebrated for its darkly funny and razor sharp portrait of 1950s society and has sold millions of copies worldwide.

The first part of the book confused me since I could not grasp the time flow and had not got used to the way Sylvia Path told her story. But it was getting more and more interesting thanks to the dark and wry humour of the main character, a scholarship girl now having mental breakdown. I love the ultimate weirdness in the way she looks into her life issues: her loneliness, her relationship, her purposes; even though they are presented through her process of finding a way to commit suicide. I highlighted a lot when I read the book, simply because there are lots of hilarious things that are delivered through Plath's poetic language. In general The Bell Jar is a real, unique, lonely and beautifully-written book, which is not a big surprise since Plath is a poet and writes this novel based on her past mental hardship.

The Catcher in the Rye 5107 It's Christmas time and Holden Caulfield has just been expelled from yet another school...

Fleeing the crooks at Pencey Prep, he pinballs around New York City seeking solace in fleeting encounters¡ªshooting the bull with strangers in dive hotels, wandering alone round Central Park, getting beaten up by pimps and cut down by erstwhile girlfriends. The city is beautiful and terrible, in all its neon loneliness and seedy glamour, its mingled sense of possibility and emptiness. Holden passes through it like a ghost, thinking always of his kid sister Phoebe, the only person who really understands him, and his determination to escape the phonies and find a life of true meaning.

The Catcher in the Rye is an all-time classic in coming-of-age literature- an elegy to teenage alienation, capturing the deeply human need for connection and the bewildering sense of loss as we leave childhood behind.

J.D. Salinger's (1919¨C2010) classic novel of teenage angst and rebellion was first published in 1951. The novel was included on Time's 2005 list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923. It was named by Modern Library and its readers as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. It has been frequently challenged in the court for its liberal use of profanity and portrayal of sexuality and in the 1950's and 60's it was the novel that every teenage boy wants to read.]]>

The Underground Railroad 30555488
In Whitehead's ingenious conception, the Underground Railroad is no mere metaphor--engineers and conductors operate a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil. Cora and Caesar's first stop is South Carolina, in a city that initially seems like a haven. But the city's placid surface masks an insidious scheme designed for its black denizens. And even worse: Ridgeway, the relentless slave catcher, is close on their heels. Forced to flee again, Cora embarks on a harrowing flight, state by state, seeking true freedom.

Like the protagonist of Gulliver's Travels, Cora encounters different worlds at each stage of her journey--hers is an odyssey through time as well as space. As Whitehead brilliantly re-creates the unique terrors for black people in the pre-Civil War era, his narrative seamlessly weaves the saga of America from the brutal importation of Africans to the unfulfilled promises of the present day. The Underground Railroad is at once a kinetic adventure tale of one woman's ferocious will to escape the horrors of bondage and a shattering, powerful meditation on the history we all share.]]>

America¡¯s most successful money manager tells how average investors can beat the pros by using what they know. According to Lynch, investment opportunities are everywhere. From the supermarket to the workplace, we encounter products and services all day long. By paying attention to the best ones, we can find companies in which to invest before the professional analysts discover them. When investors get in early, they can find the ¡°tenbaggers,¡± the stocks that appreciate tenfold from the initial investment. A few tenbaggers will turn an average stock portfolio into a star performer.

Lynch offers easy-to-follow advice for sorting out the long shots from the no-shots by reviewing a company¡¯s financial statements and knowing which numbers really count. He offers guidelines for investing in cyclical, turnaround, and fast-growing companies.

As long as you invest for the long term, Lynch says, your portfolio can reward you. This timeless advice has made One Up on Wall Street a #1 bestseller and a classic book of investment know-how.]]>

Tenth of December 13641208 Tenth of December is his most honest, accessible, and moving collection yet.

In the taut opening, "Victory Lap," a boy witnesses the attempted abduction of the girl next door and is faced with a harrowing choice: Does he ignore what he sees, or override years of smothering advice from his parents and act? In "Home," a combat-damaged soldier moves back in with his mother and struggles to reconcile the world he left with the one to which he has returned. And in the title story, a stunning meditation on imagination, memory, and loss, a middle-aged cancer patient walks into the woods to commit suicide, only to encounter a troubled young boy who, over the course of a fateful morning, gives the dying man a final chance to recall who he really is. A hapless, deluded owner of an antique store; two mothers struggling to do the right thing; a teenage girl whose idealism is challenged by a brutal brush with reality; a man tormented by a series of pharmaceutical experiments that force him to lust, to love, to kill¡ªthe unforgettable characters that populate the pages of Tenth of December are vividly and lovingly infused with Saunders' signature blend of exuberant prose, deep humanity, and stylistic innovation.

Writing brilliantly and profoundly about class, sex, love, loss, work, despair, and war, Saunders cuts to the core of the contemporary experience. These stories take on the big questions and explore the fault lines of our own morality, delving into the questions of what makes us good and what makes us human.

Unsettling, insightful, and hilarious, the stories in Tenth of December¡ªthrough their manic energy, their focus on what is redeemable in human beings, and their generosity of spirit¡ªnot only entertain and delight; they fulfill Chekhov's dictum that art should "prepare us for tenderness."]]>

Oliver Twist 18254
The story of Oliver Twist - orphaned, and set upon by evil and adversity from his first breath - shocked readers when it was published. After running away from the workhouse and pompous beadle Mr Bumble, Oliver finds himself lured into a den of thieves peopled by vivid and memorable characters - the Artful Dodger, vicious burglar Bill Sikes, his dog Bull's Eye, and prostitute Nancy, all watched over by cunning master-thief Fagin. Combining elements of Gothic Romance, the Newgate Novel and popular melodrama, Dickens created an entirely new kind of fiction, scathing in its indictment of a cruel society, and pervaded by an unforgettable sense of threat and mystery.

This Penguin Classics edition of Oliver Twist is the first critical edition to faithfully reproduce the text as its earliest readers would have encountered it from its serialisation in Bentley's Miscellany, and includes an introduction by Philip Horne, a glossary of Victorian thieves' slang, a chronology of Dickens's life, a map of contemporary London and all of George Cruikshank's original illustrations.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.]]>

Lincoln in the Bardo 29906980 Lincoln in the Bardo is a literary experience unlike any other¡ªfor no one but Saunders could conceive it.

February 1862. The Civil War is less than one year old. The fighting has begun in earnest, and the nation has begun to realize it is in for a long, bloody struggle. Meanwhile, President Lincoln's beloved eleven-year-old son, Willie, lies upstairs in the White House, gravely ill. In a matter of days, despite predictions of a recovery, Willie dies and is laid to rest in a Georgetown cemetery. "My poor boy, he was too good for this earth," the president says at the time. "God has called him home." Newspapers report that a grief-stricken Lincoln returned to the crypt several times alone to hold his boy's body.

From that seed of historical truth, George Saunders spins an unforgettable story of familial love and loss that breaks free of its realistic, historical framework into a thrilling, supernatural realm both hilarious and terrifying. Willie Lincoln finds himself in a strange purgatory, where ghosts mingle, gripe, commiserate, quarrel, and enact bizarre acts of penance. Within this transitional state¡ªcalled, in the Tibetan tradition, the bardo¡ªa monumental struggle erupts over young Willie's soul.

Lincoln in the Bardo is an astonishing feat of imagination and a bold step forward from one of the most important and influential writers of his generation. Formally daring, generous in spirit, deeply concerned with matters of the heart, it is a testament to fiction's ability to speak honestly and powerfully to the things that really matter to us. Saunders has invented a thrilling new form that deploys a kaleidoscopic, theatrical panorama of voices¡ªliving and dead, historical and invented¡ªto ask a timeless, profound question: How do we live and love when we know that everything we love must end?]]>

American Gods is a tough book to digest with a large number of conceptions of society and religion. It would have been much better if it was more concise and not suddenly switched between reality and fantasy, and from one character to another. Though the flow does not work for me (since Neil Gaiman breaks the story down into too many shorter ones and somehow they become disruptions, which distracted me a lot during my reading), the writing is brilliant with exceptional word use and great jokes. This book requires broad knowledge of American history and religious concept, it is highly recommended for people who have great interest in these topics only because it would take forever to finish reading it if you don't.

Toru, a quiet and preternaturally serious young college student in Tokyo, is devoted to Naoko, a beautiful and introspective young woman, but their mutual passion is marked by the tragic death of their best friend years before. Toru begins to adapt to campus life and the loneliness and isolation he faces there, but Naoko finds the pressures and responsibilities of life unbearable. As she retreats further into her own world, Toru finds himself reaching out to others and drawn to a fiercely independent and sexually liberated young woman.

Having some spare time in this summer, I went back to Norwegian Wood 8 years later and had a much better reading experience. In my opinion, it is not the best among Murakami's novels, the plot is too ordinary (love story between several youngsters) and I wish it could be more rational (why Toru always had to have sex with everyone, even with Reiko?!) and shorter (somehow I felt like the book was a bit long with some unnecessary details); however, reading about how those young characters struggled in their course of growing up and pondering the thoughts about life, death, love and the sense of belonging with them was thoroughly pleasant. Death is inseparable from life, and loving someone and losing them is just a natural thing that you are likely to experience in this life, but you need to be patient because life just goes on, like Toru said: "I miss you something awful sometimes, but in general I go on living with all the energy I can muster." ]]> 3.92 1987 Norwegian Wood

The Second World War 13528287
Over the past two decades, Antony Beevor has established himself as one of the world's premier historians of WWII. His multi-award winning books have included Stalingrad and The Fall of Berlin 1945 . Now, in his newest and most ambitious book, he turns his focus to one of the bloodiest and most tragic events of the twentieth century, the Second World War.

In this searing narrative that takes us from Hitler's invasion of Poland on September 1st, 1939 to V-J day on August 14, 1945 and the war's aftermath, Beevor describes the conflict and its global reach -- one that included every major power. The result is a dramatic and breathtaking single-volume history that provides a remarkably intimate account of the war that, more than any other, still commands attention and an audience.

Thrillingly written and brilliantly researched, Beevor's grand and provocative account is destined to become the definitive work on this complex, tragic, and endlessly fascinating period in world history, and confirms once more that he is a military historian of the first rank.]]>

Lord of the Flies 18964701 ASIN B007KOHV2Y moved to this edition.
At the dawn of the next world war, a plane crashes on an uncharted island, stranding a group of schoolboys. At first, with no adult supervision, their freedom is something to celebrate; this far from civilization the boys can do anything they want. Anything. They attempt to forge their own society, failing, however, in the face of terror, sin and evil. And as order collapses, as strange howls echo in the night, as terror begins its reign, the hope of adventure seems as far from reality as the hope of being rescued. Labeled a parable, an allegory, a myth, a morality tale, a parody, a political treatise, even a vision of the apocalypse, Lord of the Flies is perhaps our most memorable tale about ¡°the end of innocence, the darkness of man¡¯s heart.¡±]]>

Two little boys sitting in the sun; One got frizzled up and then there was one. One little boy left all alone; He went out and hanged himself and then there were none."

264 Agatha Christie 0312330871 Yen Pham 4 And Then There Were None is by far one of the most popular novels of Agatha Christie, whose writing are internationally recognised for puzzle-plotting and simplicity in execution. And it indeed won¡¯t let you down if you are looking for a classic mystery/thriller novel. Christie¡¯s style is very distinctive from other thriller authors in the sense that she focused more on what happened rather than how it happened, eliminates all the excessive descriptive details and make the book purely event-focused. And Then There Were None is by far one of the most popular novels of Agatha Christie, whose writing are internationally recognised for puzzle-plotting and simplicity in execution. Ten suspects is many and if the writer was not skillful enough the book might turn into something that was ¡°too much of everything¡±. The Count of Monte Cristo 7126 The epic tale of wrongful imprisonment, adventure and revenge, in its definitive translation

Thrown in prison for a crime he has not committed, Edmond Dant¨¨s is confined to the grim fortress of If. There he learns of a great hoard of treasure hidden on the Isle of Monte Cristo and he becomes determined not only to escape, but also to use the treasure to plot the destruction of the three men responsible for his incarceration. Dumas¡¯ epic tale of suffering and retribution, inspired by a real-life case of wrongful imprisonment, was a huge popular success when it was first serialized in the 1840s.

The Invention of Wings 18079776
Sarah Grimk¨¦ is the middle daughter. The one her mother calls difficult and her father calls remarkable. On Sarah's eleventh birthday, Hetty 'Handful' Grimk¨¦ is taken from the slave quarters she shares with her mother, wrapped in lavender ribbons, and presented to Sarah as a gift. A powerful, sweeping novel, inspired by real events, and set in the American Deep South in the nineteenth century, The Invention of Wings evokes a world of shocking contrasts, of beauty and ugliness, of righteous people living daily with cruelty they fail to recognize; and celebrates the power of friendship and sisterhood against all the odds.]]>

Sage Singer is a baker. She works through the night, preparing the day¡¯s breads and pastries, trying to escape a reality of loneliness, bad memories, and the shadow of her mother¡¯s death. When Josef Weber, an elderly man in Sage¡¯s grief support group, begins stopping by the bakery, they strike up an unlikely friendship. Everything changes on the day that Josef confesses a long-buried and shameful secret¡ªone that nobody else in town would ever suspect¡ªand asks Sage for an extraordinary favor. If she says yes, she faces not only moral repercussions, but potentially legal ones as well. With her own identity suddenly challenged, and the integrity of the closest friend she¡¯s ever had clouded, Sage begins to question the assumptions and expectations she¡¯s made about her life and her family. When does a moral choice become a moral imperative? And where does one draw the line between punishment and justice, forgiveness and mercy?

In this searingly honest novel, Jodi Picoult gracefully explores the lengths we will go in order to protect our families and to keep the past from dictating the future]]>

We the Living 668 Ayn Rand's first published novel, a timeless story that explores the struggles of the individual against the state in Soviet Russia.

First published in 1936, 'We the Living' portrays the impact of the Russian Revolution on three human beings who demand the right to live their own lives and pursue their own happiness. It tells of a young woman¡¯s passionate love, held like a fortress against the corrupting evil of a totalitarian state.

'We the Living' is not a story of politics, but of the men and women who have to struggle for existence behind the Red banners and slogans. It is a picture of what those slogans do to human beings. What happens to the defiant ones? What happens to those who succumb?

Against a vivid panorama of political revolution and personal revolt, Ayn Rand shows what the theory of socialism means in practice.

Ayn Rand (1905¨C1982) was born in pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg to a prosperous Jewish family as Alisa Rosenbaum. When the Bolsheviks requisitioned her family's business, they fled to the Crimea, and she later moved to America as soon as she was offered the chance. After beginning her writing career with screenplays, she published the novel 'We the Living' in 1936. Her status was later established with 'The Fountainhead' (1943) and her magnus opus, 'Atlas Shrugged' (1957). Also a prolific non-fiction writer, as well as the founder of the philosophical school of Objectivism, she has had an unequivocal impact on both literature and culture, regardless of one's perspective of her works.]]>

¡°It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured.¡±

An escaped convict with a false passport, Lin flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of Bombay, where he can disappear. Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, the two enter the city¡¯s hidden society of beggars and gangsters, prostitutes and holy men, soldiers and actors, and Indians and exiles from other countries, who seek in this remarkable place what they cannot find elsewhere.

As a hunted man without a home, family, or identity, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city¡¯s poorest slums, and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The search leads him to war, prison torture, murder, and a series of enigmatic and bloody betrayals. The keys to unlock the mysteries and intrigues that bind Lin are held by two people. The first is Khader Khan: mafia godfather, criminal-philosopher-saint, and mentor to Lin in the underworld of the Golden City. The second is Karla: elusive, dangerous, and beautiful, whose passions are driven by secrets that torment her and yet give her a terrible power.

Burning slums and five-star hotels, romantic love and prison agonies, criminal wars and Bollywood films, spiritual gurus and mujaheddin guerrillas¨Dthis huge novel has the world of human experience in its reach, and a passionate love for India at its heart.]]>

Commonwealth 28214365
Spanning five decades, Commonwealth explores how this chance encounter reverberates through the lives of the four parents and six children involved. Spending summers together in Virginia, the Keating and Cousins children forge a lasting bond that is based on a shared disillusionment with their parents and the strange and genuine affection that grows up between them.

When, in her twenties, Franny begins an affair with the legendary author Leon Posen and tells him about her family, the story of her siblings is no longer hers to control. Their childhood becomes the basis for his wildly successful book, ultimately forcing them to come to terms with their losses, their guilt, and the deeply loyal connection they feel for one another.

Told with equal measures of humor and heartbreak, Commonwealth is a meditation on inspiration, interpretation, and the ownership of stories. It is a brilliant and tender tale of the far-reaching ties of love and responsibility that bind us together.]]>

Atlas Shrugged 662 This is the story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world and did. Was he a destroyer or the greatest of liberators?

Why did he have to fight his battle, not against his enemies, but against those who needed him most, and his hardest battle against the woman he loved? What is the world¡¯s motor ¡ª and the motive power of every man? You will know the answer to these questions when you discover the reason behind the baffling events that play havoc with the lives of the characters in this story.

Tremendous in its scope, this novel presents an astounding panorama of human life ¡ª from the productive genius who becomes a worthless playboy ¡ª to the great steel industrialist who does not know that he is working for his own destruction ¡ª to the philosopher who becomes a pirate ¡ª to the composer who gives up his career on the night of his triumph ¡ª to the woman who runs a transcontinental railroad ¡ª to the lowest track worker in her Terminal tunnels.

This is a mystery story, not about the murder ¡ª and rebirth ¡ª of man¡¯s spirit. "Shooting an Elephant" is Orwell's searing and painfully honest account of his experience as a police officer in imperial Burma; killing an escaped elephant in front of a crowd 'solely to avoid looking a fool'. The other masterly essays in this collection include classics such as "My Country Right or Left", "How the Poor Die" and "Such, Such were the Joys", his memoir of the horrors of public school, as well as discussions of Shakespeare, sleeping rough, boys' weeklies, and a spirited defence of English cooking. Richn in materials, neutral in story telling, captivating theme (impacts of British colonisation on African society), raw in details (unique traditions of the local tribe, intense conflicts between local people and the British), Things Fall Apart is an eye-opening account of the life in Africa back then. While lots of readers complain about the the idleness of the storyline, I find myself enjoy the simplicity, rawness, and the ease of the flow, which I think a better reflection of African characteristics. Judgement is beyond Achebe's intention I suppose: rightness or wrongness is a matter of personal perspective, especially in such things as religion and history.

<![CDATA[Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life]]> 121732 Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life is a partial autobiography describing Lewis' conversion to Christianity. The book overall contains less detail concerning specific events than typical autobiographies. This is because his purpose in writing wasn't primarily historical. His aim was to identify & describe the events surrounding his accidental discovery of & consequent search for the phenomenon he labelled "Joy". This word was the best translation he could make of the German idea of Sehnsucht, longing. That isn't to say the book is devoid of information about his life. He recounts his early years with a measure of amusement sometimes mixed with pain.

However, while he does describe his life, the principal theme of the book is Joy as he defined it. This Joy was a longing so intense for something so good & so high up it couldn't be explained with words. He's struck with "stabs of joy" throughout life. He finally finds what it's for at the end. He writes about his experiences at Malvern College in 1913, aged 15. Though he described the school as "a very furnace of impure loves" he defended the practice as being "the only chink left thru which something spontaneous & uncalculating could creep in." The book's last two chapters cover the end of his search as he moves from atheism to theism & then from theism to Christianity. He ultimately discovers the true nature & purpose of Joy & its place in his own life.

The book isn't connected with his unexpected marriage in later life to Joy Gresham. The marriage occurred long after the period described, though not long after the book was published. His friends were quick to notice the coincidence, remarking he'd really been "Surprised by Joy". "Surprised by Joy" is also an allusion to Wordsworth's poem, "Surprised by Joy-Impatient As The Wind", relating an incident when Wordsworth forgot the death of his beloved daughter.]]>

Infinite Jest 6759
Set in an addicts' halfway house and a tennis academy, and featuring the most endearingly screwed-up family to come along in recent fiction, Infinite Jest explores essential questions about what entertainment is and why it has come to so dominate our lives; about how our desire for entertainment affects our need to connect with other people; and about what the pleasures we choose say about who we are.

Equal parts philosophical quest and screwball comedy, Infinite Jest bends every rule of fiction without sacrificing for a moment its own entertainment value. It is an exuberant, uniquely American exploration of the passions that make us human¡ªand one of those rare books that renew the idea of what a novel can do.]]>

The Light Between Oceans 13158800 Librarian's note: An alternate cover edition can be found here

Australia, 1926. After four harrowing years fighting on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns home to take a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day's journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby's cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.

Tom, whose records as a lighthouse keeper are meticulous and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel has taken the tiny baby to her breast. Against Tom's judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.

M. L. Stedman's mesmerizing, beautifully written debut novel seduces us into accommodating Isabel's decision to keep this "gift from God." And we are swept into a story about extraordinarily compelling characters seeking to find their North Star in a world where there is no right answer, where justice for one person is another's tragic loss.]]>

Think and Grow Rich 1005 Think and Grow Rich has been called the "Granddaddy of All Motivational Literature." It was the first book to boldly ask, "What makes a winner?" The man who asked and listened for the answer, Napoleon Hill, is now counted in the top ranks of the world's winners himself. The most famous of all teachers of success spent "a fortune and the better part of a lifetime of effort" to produce the "Law of Success" philosophy that forms the basis of his books and that is so powerfully summarized in this one.

In the original Think and Grow Rich, published in 1937, Hill draws on stories of Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and other millionaires of his generation to illustrate his principles. In the updated version, Arthur R. Pell, Ph.D., a nationally known author, lecturer, and consultant in human resources management and an expert in applying Hill's thought, deftly interweaves anecdotes of how contemporary millionaires and billionaires, such as Bill Gates, Mary Kay Ash, Dave Thomas, and Sir John Templeton, achieved their wealth. Outmoded or arcane terminology and examples are faithfully refreshed to preclude any stumbling blocks to a new generation of readers.]]>

Burmese Days 9650 276 George Orwell 1421808307 Yen Pham 5 favorites
Orwell expressed his agitation against the British ruling over Myanmar back in the Empire days, when power and imperial bigotry led to the fact that a number of white people perceived themselves as a superior race over the others. The main character John Flory is Orwell¡¯s self-portrait to show his personal conflicts as a English man oppressed by hatred towards the racism and imperialism by his home country.

All the characters in Burmese Days appear unlikable, either with their snobbishness, shortsightedness or obscure self-esteem nurtured by racism: women who lived with the one and only purpose of husband hunting, men who were blind by power equipped with disgusting racist epithets. That is Orwell¡¯s very own way of writing that make me love his work a lot, because it brings integrity and honesty that somehow I do not often find it the contemporary novels.

Burmese Days might not be Orwell¡¯s most famous book but it is a decent debut novel. The fact the he lived in Burma for several years as a police officer benefits the way he pictured Burma a lot, which successfully presented the suffocating tropical heat as well as intensity between British and the local people to readers. The exaggeration in describing human behavior is the result of Orwell¡¯s satirical view towards the irony and stupidity of people with spoiled humanity and corruption, which later can be seen clearly in his masterpiece Animal Farm.]]>

This is my first book about Burma (Myanmar) and it is refreshing to read about a a colonial society with its rich history and culture. Burmese Days, unlike other Orwell¡¯s books that I read which are carried mostly by both third-person or first-person narration, is surprisingly full of descriptions of the sights, atmosphere and native people in Burma back in 1920s when the British was ruling over the country. I did not expect that Orwell would tell the story in such a detailed and vivid way, which brought a sweet surprise to me even as a big fan of him.

The Trial 17692 The Trial is one of the most important novels of the twentieth century: the terrifying tale of Josef K., a respectable bank officer who is suddenly and inexplicably arrested and must defend himself against a charge about which he can get no information. Whether read as an existential tale, a parable, or a prophecy of the excesses of modern bureaucracy wedded to the madness of totalitarianism, Kafka's nightmare has resonated with chilling truth for generations of readers. This new edition is based upon the work of an international team of experts who have restored the text, the sequence of chapters, and their division to create a version that is as close as possible to the way the author left it.

In his brilliant translation, Breon Mitchell masterfully reproduces the distinctive poetics of Kafka's prose, revealing a novel as full of energy and power as when it was first written.]]>

I read Kafka simply because of my curiosity after reading many books of authors who are influenced by him, say Geogre Orwell and Haruki Murakami, and yes The Trial is indeed a good experience, a short but tough book to read. It creates a dystopia with a very generic view and an eerie plot. The Trial is somewhat like an religious allegory even though it did not mention any specific religion reference. "If anything, the novel seems to stress the significance of K.'s struggle to find meaning in his life, which, even if it is a failed quest, in some way echoes the religious tradition of self-examination and personal enlightenment through religious study."

Go Set a Watchman 24818632 To Kill a Mockingbird. Maycomb, Alabama. Twenty-six-year-old Jean Louise Finch¡ª"Scout"¡ªreturns home from New York City to visit her aging father, Atticus. Set against the backdrop of the civil rights tensions and political turmoil that were transforming the South, Jean Louise's homecoming turns bittersweet when she learns disturbing truths about her close-knit family, the town and the people dearest to her. Memories from her childhood flood back, and her values and assumptions are thrown into doubt. Featuring many of the iconic characters from To Kill a Mockingbird, Go Set a Watchman perfectly captures a young woman, and a world, in a painful yet necessary transition out of the illusions of the past¡ªa journey that can be guided only by one's conscience. Written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman imparts a fuller, richer understanding and appreciation of Harper Lee. Here is an unforgettable novel of wisdom, humanity, passion, humor and effortless precision¡ªa profoundly affecting work of art that is both wonderfully evocative of another era and relevant to our own times. It not only confirms the enduring brilliance of To Kill a Mockingbird, but also serves as its essential companion, adding depth, context and new meaning to an American classic.]]> 199 Harper Lee Yen Pham 5 3.55 2015 Go Set a Watchman

It just feels like Harper Lee never disappoint me. Go Set a Watchman is more on a raw side compared to To Kill a Mockingbird but it is still an enjoyable ride for me. The thing about her two books is that after you finish the feeling is still lingering in your mind and ask you to think about the ideas of them. I don't think Go Set a Watchman is a disappointment like many other readers who find it is nothing compared to the famous To Kill a Mockingbird since I embrace it without any high expectations rather than just to live in Maycomb, Alabama and savour Harper Lee's witty prose once again.

Moby-Dick or, The Whale 153747 "It is the horrible texture of a fabric that should be woven of ships' cables and hawsers. A Polar wind blows through it, and birds of prey hover over it."

So Melville wrote of his masterpiece, one of the greatest works of imagination in literary history. In part, Moby-Dick is the story of an eerily compelling madman pursuing an unholy war against a creature as vast and dangerous and unknowable as the sea itself. But more than just a novel of adventure, more than an encyclopaedia of whaling lore and legend, the book can be seen as part of its author's lifelong meditation on America. Written with wonderfully redemptive humour, Moby-Dick is also a profound inquiry into character, faith, and the nature of perception.

This edition of Moby-Dick, which reproduces the definitive text of the novel, includes invaluable explanatory notes, along with maps, illustrations, and a glossary of nautical terms.]]>

The Metamorphosis 485894 Alternate cover edition of ISBN 0553213695 / 9780553213690

"As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect. He was laying on his hard, as it were armor-plated, back and when he lifted his head a little he could see his domelike brown belly divided into stiff arched segments on top of which the bed quilt could hardly keep in position and was about to slide off completely. His numerous legs, which were pitifully thin compared to the rest of his bulk, waved helplessly before his eyes."

With it's startling, bizarre, yet surprisingly funny first opening, Kafka begins his masterpiece, The Metamorphosis. It is the story of a young man who, transformed overnight into a giant beetle-like insect, becomes an object of disgrace to his family, an outsider in his own home, a quintessentially alienated man. A harrowing¡ªthough absurdly comic¡ªmeditation on human feelings of inadequacy, guilt, and isolation, The Metamorphosis has taken its place as one of the most widely read and influential works of twentieth-century fiction. As W.H. Auden wrote, "Kafka is important to us because his predicament is the predicament of modern man."]]>

<![CDATA[A Hunger Artist (Short Prose of Franz Kafka)]]> 141352 A Hunger Artist (1924) explores many of the themes that were close to him: spiritual poverty, asceticism, futility, and the alienation of the modern artist.

He edited the manuscript just before his death, and these four stories are some of his best known and most powerful work, marking his maturity as a writer. In addition to "First Sorrow," "A Little Woman," and "Josephine the Singer, or the Mouse People" is the title story, "A Hunger Artist," which has been called by the critic Heinz Politzer "a perfection, a fatal fulfillment that expresses Kafka's desire for permanence."

The three volumes Twisted Spoon Press has published: Contemplation, A Country Doctor, and A Hunger Artist are the collections of stories that Kafka had published during his lifetime. Though each volume has its own distinctive character, they have most often appeared in English in collected editions. They are presented here as separate editions, in new translations by Kevin Blahut, each with its own illustrator from the Prague community.]]>

The God of Small Things 9777
Armed only with the invincible innocence of children, they fashion a childhood for themselves in the shade of the wreck that is their family¡ªtheir lonely, lovely mother, Ammu (who loves by night the man her children love by day), their blind grandmother, Mammachi (who plays Handel on her violin), their beloved uncle Chacko (Rhodes scholar, pickle baron, radical Marxist, bottom-pincher), their enemy, Baby Kochamma (ex-nun and incumbent grandaunt), and the ghost of an imperial entomologist's moth (with unusually dense dorsal tufts).

When their English cousin, Sophie Mol, and her mother, Margaret Kochamma, arrive on a Christmas visit, Esthappen and Rahel learn that Things Can Change in a Day. That lives can twist into new, ugly shapes, even cease forever, beside their river "graygreen." With fish in it. With the sky and trees in it. And at night, the broken yellow moon in it.

The brilliantly plotted story uncoils with an agonizing sense of foreboding and inevitability. Yet nothing prepares you for what lies at the heart of it.

The God of Small Things takes on the Big Themes¡ªLove. Madness. Hope. Infinite Joy. Here is a writer who dares to break the rules. To dislocate received rhythms and create the language she requires, a language that is at once classical and unprecedented. Arundhati Roy has given us a book that is anchored to anguish, but fueled by wit and magic.]]>

I find in Orwell's prose his sincerity and integrity, and it makes things much easier even most of the time he talked about humanity, social issues and politics. You don't find many authors like Orwell these days, cause many of them end up complicating things, trying too much to sound wise and to make big impression. Down and Out in Paris and London is a partly autobiographical and party fictional account which expresses the author's perspective and personal experience in social equality. It is definitely one of my all-time favourites thanks to the simple, sincere and vivid narration as well as its unusual way of looking at things. I think I've been a big fan of George since Animal Farm so my rating is somewhat personal. If you want to know how to be actually down and out and how Paris and London were like in 1928-1930, I suppose the book would be a good read.

An interesting journey of a family which moved around different parts of the US and had a wild and free life. Here we witness a very uncommon way of raising children of an alcoholic father who loved science and a free-spirit mother who devoted herself to arts. Even neither of them succeeded at earning money and providing their children with good facilities, I still have respect for some of the things they did, including their very distinctive way of raising children and their firm opinion of living with nature and never be too protective to your children. Whether it is good or bad depends on each person. The Glass Castle is an excellent memoirs with humorous ideas, conversations as well as tragical moments, however, as it happened far in the US and seemed a bit wild, somehow it does not seem real to me (yes it is a memoir). So 4-star rating it is, but it is highly recommended to those who wants a good-read on family topic.

<![CDATA[The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business]]> 12609433
Marketers at Procter & Gamble study videos of people making their beds. They are desperately trying to figure out how to sell a new product called Febreze, on track to be one of the biggest flops in company history. Suddenly, one of them detects a nearly imperceptible pattern¡ªand with a slight shift in advertising, Febreze goes on to earn a billion dollars a year.

An untested CEO takes over one of the largest companies in America. His first order of business is attacking a single pattern among his employees¡ªhow they approach worker safety¡ªand soon the firm, Alcoa, becomes the top performer in the Dow Jones.

What do all these people have in common? They achieved success by focusing on the patterns that shape every aspect of our lives.

They succeeded by transforming habits.

In The Power of Habit, award-winning New York Times business reporter Charles Duhigg takes us to the thrilling edge of scientific discoveries that explain why habits exist and how they can be changed. With penetrating intelligence and an ability to distill vast amounts of information into engrossing narratives, Duhigg brings to life a whole new understanding of human nature and its potential for transformation.

Along the way we learn why some people and companies struggle to change, despite years of trying, while others seem to remake themselves overnight. We visit laboratories where neuroscientists explore how habits work and where, exactly, they reside in our brains. We discover how the right habits were crucial to the success of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, and civil-rights hero Martin Luther King, Jr. We go inside Procter & Gamble, Target superstores, Rick Warren¡¯s Saddleback Church, NFL locker rooms, and the nation¡¯s largest hospitals and see how implementing so-called keystone habits can earn billions and mean the difference between failure and success, life and death.

At its core, The Power of Habit contains an exhilarating argument: The key to exercising regularly, losing weight, raising exceptional children, becoming more productive, building revolutionary companies and social movements, and achieving success is understanding how habits work.

Habits aren¡¯t destiny. As Charles Duhigg shows, by harnessing this new science, we can transform our businesses, our communities, and our lives.]]>

I know this book is quite famous (say, many people see it as the guidance to change their life) but it simply does not work on me. Although it offers interesting insight into habits (the basic framework of habits and some advice on how to create habits, the stories of big firms which utilise the knowledge of habits in their business (P&G, Starbucks, Alcoa etc), the narration and the way Duhigg jumped abruptly from one story to another ruins the flow of the book. One thing I don't like self-hep books is they usually try too hard to sound wise, thus they become complicated and repetitive (lessons learned, but the authors keep repeating the examples). I think life lesson and good advice are possible to be delivered through story with absolutely simplicity (read What I Talk About When I Talk About Running for a good example).

Having said that, this kind of book is not my cup of tea, but it may be life-changing and useful to other people. Reading is one of the most personal things after all, so do give it a try if you want to understand how habits form and the possibility of changing your habits, good luck!

Nineteen Eighty-Four 6663401
Hidden away in the Record Department of the sprawling Ministry of Truth, Winston Smith skilfully rewrites the past to suit the needs of the Party. Yet he inwardly rebels against the totalitarian world he lives in, which demands absolute obedience and controls him through the all-seeing telescreens and the watchful eye of Big Brother, symbolic head of the Party. In his longing for truth and liberty, Smith begins a secret love affair with a fellow-worker Julia, but soon discovers the true price of freedom is betrayal.

George Orwell's dystopian masterpiece, Nineteen Eighty-Four is perhaps the most pervasively influential book of the twentieth century.

355 George Orwell 0141919957 Yen Pham 5 1984, even though I felt that the book was definitely a hard-but-must-read timeless classic, it might be somewhere between 4 and 5 stars only because as a novel it lacked some of the turning points in story development and sometimes was too repetitive (all those long passages about political views and society setup required me to take a break every once a while to digest the information, but I guess it is inevitable for a dystopia novel?). However, after giving it some thought I decide that 1984 deserves a 5-star rating for it incredibly well-built dystopia and the author's vision/ideals of an totalitarian/communism society at the most extreme level from the point of view of a disappointed Marxist (Orwell was a Socialist but he hated Communism in practice).

It took a genius like George Orwell to write such a novel in the year of 1948. Not only it described the phases of society and revolution but it also helped to expose the nature of power, class conflict, and the ruling methods imposed by different oligarchies throughout human history. The creativity, knowledge and mental strength of Orwell were amazing with which he built up a world with all elements of totalitarianism that we might think about but underestimated their importance and effect on citizens: Propaganda, Love/Sexuality, Independence/Identity/Individuality, Music, Loyalty, Poverty, Wealth, Technology, and Language.

The politics is not easy to absorb, but I think for twenty-something people you are likely to have better understanding about this world/our society and take it more serious by reading 1984. It's advisable to read Animal Farm prior to 1984 since these two were written in a logical and chronological order, and I personally think that Animal Farm (an easy read with allegory) would help you a lot to digest 1984 (a heavy political dystopia).]]>

I had great time following the events happened to the Corleone family, even though I would prefer the story to be shorten a bit (especially those parts about the supporting characters which indeed makes the novel somewhat overlong). <![CDATA[The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry]]> 18293427
A. J. Fikry¡¯s life is not at all what he expected it to be. His wife has died, his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history, and now his prized possession, a rare collection of Poe poems, has been stolen. Slowly but surely, he is isolating himself from all the people of Alice Island¡ªfrom Lambiase, the well-intentioned police officer who¡¯s always felt kindly toward Fikry; from Ismay, his sister-in-law who is hell-bent on saving him from his dreary self; from Amelia, the lovely and idealistic (if eccentric) Knightley Press sales rep who keeps on taking the ferry over to Alice Island, refusing to be deterred by A.J.¡¯s bad attitude. Even the books in his store have stopped holding pleasure for him. These days, A.J. can only see them as a sign of a world that is changing too rapidly.

And then a mysterious package appears at the bookstore. It¡¯s a small package, but large in weight. It¡¯s that unexpected arrival that gives A. J. Fikry the opportunity to make his life over, the ability to see everything anew. It doesn¡¯t take long for the locals to notice the change overcoming A.J.; or for that determined sales rep, Amelia, to see her curmudgeonly client in a new light; or for the wisdom of all those books to become again the lifeblood of A.J.¡¯s world; or for everything to twist again into a version of his life that he didn¡¯t see coming. All the Light We Cannot See 18143977
In a mining town in Germany, Werner Pfennig, an orphan, grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find that brings them news and stories from places they have never seen or imagined. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments and is enlisted to use his talent to track down the resistance. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another.

From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the stunningly beautiful instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.

It does not offer a completely new approach to the war theme (I find it is similar to The Book Thief in a way), still, Anthony Doerr finds a way to tell his stories that keeps his readers turning the pages. His prose was no doubt excellent with rich vocabulary and decent observance, however, some times I find it was a bit too descriptive that distracted me from the story events. I mean it's good to offer poetic imagery but if you showed off too much your effort might become less appreciated because it's hard for the readers to focus on the points.

In summary, the book is one of the recent contemporary novels that is able to touch people's hearts and shows them how the WWII destroyed people's lives (both in Germany and France) and the severe pains that it left behind.]]>

An intimate look at writing, running, and the incredible way they intersect, What I Talk About When I Talk About Running is an illuminating glimpse into the solitary passions of one of our greatest artists.

While training for the New York City Marathon, Haruki Murakami decided to keep a journal of his progress. The result is a memoir about his intertwined obsessions with running and writing, full of vivid recollections and insights, including the eureka moment when he decided to become a writer. By turns funny and sobering, playful and philosophical, here is a rich and revelatory work that elevates the human need for motion to an art form.]]>

I'm not sure the book will work for everyone, but for me who is trying to keep up my daily jogging it is definitely an inspiring book.

I love this novel. I enjoyed every moment of my summer day living in Sputnik Sweetheart's world and devouring everything about the very imperfect characters K, Sumire and Miu. It tugged at my heartstrings, led me through the story with pure enjoyment (despite being quite uneventful), and struck me with the realisation of people, love and friendship.

Sputnik Sweetheart makes Murakami's characters more relatable and helps me (finally) be able to understand why he usually chooses to write books with a mix of reality and fantasy: as he expressed his view as a writer through one of the main characters Sumire, a girl who was born to write and write only, the only way to blend the knowns and the unknowns while still fully enjoy things (i.e., not thinking) is dreaming, since "in dreams you don't need to make any distinctions between things. Not al all. Boundaries don't exist. So in dreams there are hardly ever collisions. Even if they are, they don't hurt. Reality is different. Reality bites."

I had been always feeling so confused while reading other books of Murakami, the way he left things unsolved at the end of every story, and it kept me uneasy in a way. "Did you ever see anyone shot by a gun without bleeding?" is an excellent passage that unveiled his intention and offered me a better view about his novel, because I think Murakami wanted his readers to accept that "things just happen" , "That¡¯s gotta be one of the principles behind reality. Accepting things that are hard to comprehend, and leaving them that way."

I find Sputnik Sweetheart a decent book, though it is similar to other Murakami's novels in one way or another (book-lover, enjoy-cooking-and-being-alone and always-in-the-state-of-questioning-who-I-am characters), the conciseness of the book (220+ pages) and its quality of being easy-to-follow help to increase the sophistication and reduce the confusion in Murakami's writings, make it stand out and totally deserve a 5-star rating (again, it's my personal reading experience).

The Secret History 29044 559 Donna Tartt 1400031702 Yen Pham 5 favorites
The narration is quite distinguish, you will find it's like the characters are rambling all over the book about common topics of college life such as drinking, parties, drugs, and sex. But I find the way Tartt writes it appealing enough to keep moving on without feeling annoyed, perhaps because of the excellence of her descriptions, the sharp use of words and the intriguing events leading to the murders and the aftermaths of it. The trend of contemporary novels these days is to be short and straight the point, so I find it an entirely new experience reading a book with lengthy narration.

The Secret History is filled with flawed young people who poisoned themselves by the obsession of loosing their human side completely for a while, then ended up killing two people, one of whom was their classmates/close friend unfortunately. You hate them for being that wild and crazy and immoral and you sympathise with them at the same time, because they were real in a way. You are likely to ponder over the question posed in the beginning of the book and let it haunt you for a longer while ¡°Does such a thing as 'the fatal flaw,' that showy dark crack running down the middle of a life, exist outside literature? I used to think it didn't. Now I think it does. And I think that mine is this: a morbid longing for the picturesque at all costs.¡±

All in all, despite the repetition of the same scenes (being drunk, breaking the laws, smoking cigarettes etc.) and the length of it, The Secret History wins over me by its originality and natural charm that are so hard for me to explain (like, she writes five or six long pages and still nothing happens but I still love it and just keep reading, because her skill is just perfect!!). I would recommend it if you would like to read a crime thriller novel with classic characteristic (the beauty of Greece's culture and history (yes!)) and unique writing style, which I think are generally good factors for a good-read.]]>

I have a strong preference for crime thriller, and The Secret History, despite its flaws, makes it to my top of thrilling novels. Though some times I found the book a bit unnecessarily long, I still enjoyed it to the very last lines, and was willing to spend the nights (and days, to be honest) turning pages just to know what would be up at the end of the journey; which is the most important reason that I don't have any hesitance rating it 5 stars. It is not easy at all to find a book that you don't want to put it down at any time after all.

I would recommend it if you would like to read a crime thriller novel with classic characteristic (the beauty of Greece's culture and history (yes!)) and unique writing style, which I think are generally good factors for a good-read.

Water for Elephants 43641
Beautifully written, Water for Elephants is illuminated by a wonderful sense of time and place. It tells a story of a love between two people that overcomes incredible odds in a world in which even love is a luxury that few can afford.]]>
368 Sara Gruen 1565125606 Yen Pham 3 Water for Elephants portrays the vibrant life of a train circus by the memories of Jacob, a lonely ninety-three year old man living the last days of his life at an assisted-living centre. One good thing of this book is that the author did a good job at describing the life of an old man and his grudges against his current situations (not being able to live independently). As expected from the settings of the novel, the main characters were living in a chaotic period of time, struggling to survive during the Depression era in the United States. The historical background provided an interesting context for the crucial conflicts between the characters in the novel; however, the characters themselves completely failed to draw my interest (except for Kinko), I found them predictable and dull. This is so disappointing since I expected charming, unpredictable and wild circus people, but even the romance was boring.

So, I give credit for the theme of the book and some good points in painting the moodiness of a former circus member at an old age. Other than that, Water for Elephants is an overrated novel with the lack of alluring characters and a satisfying and believable climax in its plot.]]>

The Sky Is Everywhere 10231501
This remarkable debut is perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen, Deb Caletti, and Francesca Lia Block. Just as much a celebration of love as it is a portrait of loss, Lennie's struggle to sort her own melody out of the noise around her is always honest, often hilarious, and ultimately unforgettable.]]>

The book is about how the seventeen-year-old Lennie wakes up from her long sleep, gets out of her tortoise-shell and starts to tell her own story after her sister's death. It's hard to go on living without her sister, who had been her shell, her shadow and her sky. She is trembling, walking through days, being drown in grief and the guilty feeling of getting stuck between two boys: Joe - the fabulous boy from Paris and Toby - her sister's boyfriend. "Grief is forever. It doesn't go away; it becomes a part of you, step for step, breath for breath...That's just how it is. Grief and love are conjoined, you don't get one without the other.¡± Lennie, as most people do, eventually learns how to go on, let her sister be remembered, hence live forever in her heart.

But it is interesting to see the point of view from such a flawed character, because we humans are all the same: we make mistake, we regret, but we do learn one or two things from them.
