<![CDATA[The Queens of Animation: The Untold Story of the Women Who Transformed the World of Disney and Made Cinematic History]]> 43521666 In The Queens of Animation, author Nathalia Holt recounts the stories of a group of women who have slipped under the radar for decades but have touched all our lives. These women infiltrated the all-male domain of Disney Studios and used early technologies to create the rich artwork and iconic storylines that would reach millions of viewers across generations. Over the decades--while battling sexism, domestic abuse, and workplace harassment--these women also fought to influence the way female characters are depicted to young audiences.

Based on extensive interviews and exclusive access to archival and personal documents, The Queens of Animation tells the story of their vital contribution to Disney's golden age and their continued impact on animated filmmaking, culminating in the record-shattering Frozen, Disney's first female-directed full-length feature film.

<![CDATA[Before the Coffee Gets Cold (Before the Coffee Gets Cold, #1)]]> 44421460 What would you change if you could go back in time?

In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a caf¨¦ which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time.

In Before the Coffee Gets Cold, we meet four visitors, each of whom is hoping to make use of the caf¨¦¡¯s time-travelling offer, in order to: confront the man who left them, receive a letter from their husband whose memory has been taken by early onset Alzheimer's, to see their sister one last time, and to meet the daughter they never got the chance to know.

But the journey into the past does not come without risks: customers must sit in a particular seat, they cannot leave the caf¨¦, and finally, they must return to the present before the coffee gets cold . . .

Toshikazu Kawaguchi¡¯s beautiful, moving story explores the age-old question: what would you change if you could travel back in time? More importantly, who would you want to meet, maybe for one last time?]]>
213 Toshikazu Kawaguchi 1529029589 Josie 5 favorites This book was so good. I did not expect to get so emotional! I love the time-travel concept, it is definitely a unique take on it. I loved the characters and the way it was structured. I think the plot was really well done, with different people passing through and using the cafe, while having an underlying plot with the owners. I could go on for ages about this book, but overall, amazing, really well done!

That being said, I can see how it isn't for everyone. There are definitely some things that could have been elaborated on but weren't. There isn't really any character development. The plot is more like a selection of short stories, which I guess it is, except it has an underlying theme. ]]>

Elatsoe (Elatsoe, #1) 49089632
There are some differences. This America has been shaped dramatically by the magic, monsters, knowledge, and legends of its peoples, those Indigenous and those not. Some of these forces are charmingly everyday, like the ability to make an orb of light appear or travel across the world through rings of fungi. But other forces are less charming and should never see the light of day.

Elatsoe lives in this slightly stranger America. She can raise the ghosts of dead animals, a skill passed down through generations of her Lipan Apache family. Her beloved cousin has just been murdered in a town that wants no prying eyes. But she is going to do more than pry. The picture-perfect facade of Willowbee masks gruesome secrets, and she will rely on her wits, skills, and friends to tear off the mask and protect her family.]]>

From the bestselling master of teen fantasy, Garth Nix.

In a slightly alternate London in 1983, Susan Arkshaw is looking for her father, a man she has never met. Crime boss Frank Thringley might be able to help her, but Susan doesn¡¯t get time to ask Frank any questions before he is turned to dust by the prick of a silver hatpin in the hands of the outrageously attractive Merlin.

Merlin is a young left-handed bookseller (one of the fighting ones), who with the right-handed booksellers (the intellectual ones), are an extended family of magical beings who police the mythic and legendary Old World when it intrudes on the modern world, in addition to running several bookshops.

Susan¡¯s search for her father begins with her mother¡¯s possibly misremembered or misspelt surnames, a reading room ticket, and a silver cigarette case engraved with something that might be a coat of arms.

Merlin has a quest of his own, to find the Old World entity who used ordinary criminals to kill his mother. As he and his sister, the right-handed bookseller Vivien, tread in the path of a botched or covered-up police investigation from years past, they find this quest strangely overlaps with Susan¡¯s. Who or what was her father? Susan, Merlin, and Vivien must find out, as the Old World erupts dangerously into the New.]]>

<![CDATA[How to Argue With a Racist: What Our Genes Do (and Don't) Say About Human Difference]]> 50734400 Race is not a biological reality.
Racism thrives on our not knowing this.

Racist pseudoscience has become so commonplace that it can be hard to spot. But its toxic effects on society are plain to see¡ªfeeding white nationalism, fueling hatred, endangering lives, and corroding our discourse on everything from sports to intelligence. Even well-intentioned people repeat stereotypes based on ¡°science,¡± because cutting-edge genetics are hard to grasp¡ªand all too easy to distort. Paradoxically, these misconceptions are multiplying even as scientists make unprecedented discoveries in human genetics¡ªfindings that, when accurately understood, are powerful evidence against racism. We¡¯ve never had clearer answers about who we are and where we come from, but this knowledge is sorely needed in our casual conversations about race.

How to Argue With a Racist emphatically dismantles outdated notions of race by illuminating what modern genetics actually can and can¡¯t tell us about human difference. We now know that the racial categories still dividing us do not align with observable genetic differences. In fact, our differences are so minute that, most of all, they serve as evidence of our shared humanity.]]>

I loved this. I loved The Raven Cycle, and Ronan was one of my fav characters (although I really couldn't choose my fav, let's be honest), so when I found out about this book I was ecstatic. I really liked how the story continues along a similar vein, while introducing more characters and making it seem almost like a completely different series. The story sort of opens up beyond Henrietta without seeming forced. Overall, really really excited for the next book!

<![CDATA[In the House in the Dark of the Woods]]> 38496725 "Once upon a time there was and there wasn't a woman who went to the woods."

In this ingenious horror story set in colonial New England, a woman goes missing. Or not missing¨Cperhaps she has fled, abandoned her family. Or perhaps she's been kidnapped, and set loose to wander in the dense woods of the north. Alone and possibly lost, she meets another woman in the forest. Then everything changes.

On a journey that will take her through a wolf-haunted wood, down a deep well, and onto a living ship made of human bones, our heroine is forced to confront her past and may find that the evil she flees has been inside her all along.

Eerie and disturbing, In the House in the Dark of the Woods is a novel of psychological horror and suspense told in Laird Hunt's acclaimed lyrical prose style. It is the story of a bewitching, a betrayal, a master huntress and her quarry. It is a story of anger, of repression, of revenge and redemption. It is a story of a haunting, one that forms the bedrock of American mythology, told in a vivid voice you will never forget.]]>

-loved the representation
-LOVE LOVE LOVED the way that this book addresses the fact that for some reason society has decided that you can't love dresses and be feminine while still being a feminist and having other ambitions. I think this is the first time I have EVER seen this in a book.

-Monty and Perce making their own life :)
-The inter-personal relationships were realistic and enjoyable

Cons:
-boring. The only fault I have with this book is that it was boring at times. I can't tell if it was the writing, or the 'action' scenes, but I feel like this book just wasn't as exciting as the first. Because of this, it took me a lot longer to drag myself through this.

So naturally they break into the Fittes Mausoleum, on a perilous mission to discover the truth about London's top ghost-hunting agency, and its sinister leader.

What they discover will change everything.

But there's little time to ponder. A near-miss at a haunted fairground is only the start - as the Fittes agency closes in on the team, an epic struggle commences.

With the help of some unexpected, and rather ghostly, allies, Lockwood & Co must battle their greatest enemy yet, as they move ever closer to the moment when the earth-shattering secret of 'the problem' will finally be revealed.

Jonathan Stroud once again delivers a rousing adventure full of danger, laughs, twists, and frights. The revelations will send readers back to Book 1 to start the series all over again.]]>

Romeo and Juliet 18135 Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare creates a violent world, in which two young people fall in love. It is not simply that their families disapprove; the Montagues and the Capulets are engaged in a blood feud.

In this death-filled setting, the movement from love at first sight to the lovers¡¯ final union in death seems almost inevitable. And yet, this play set in an extraordinary world has become the quintessential story of young love. Of Mice and Men 890 ¡°I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that's why.¡±

They are an unlikely pair: George is "small and quick and dark of face"; Lennie, a man of tremendous size, has the mind of a young child. Yet they have formed a "family," clinging together in the face of loneliness and alienation. Laborers in California's dusty vegetable fields, they hustle work when they can, living a hand-to-mouth existence. But George and Lennie have a plan: to own an acre of land and a shack they can call their own.

While the powerlessness of the laboring class is a recurring theme in Steinbeck's work of the late 1930s, he narrowed his focus when composing Of Mice and Men, creating an intimate portrait of two men facing a world marked by petty tyranny, misunderstanding, jealousy, and callousness. But though the scope is narrow, the theme is universal: a friendship and a shared dream that makes an individual's existence meaningful.

A unique perspective on life's hardships, this story has achieved the status of timeless classic due to its remarkable success as a novel, a Broadway play, and three acclaimed films.]]>

<![CDATA[The Girl Who Reads on the M¨¦tro]]> 43263671 In the vein of Amelie and The Little Paris Bookshop, a modern fairytale about a French woman whose life is turned upside down when she meets a reclusive bookseller and his young daughter.

Juliette leads a perfectly ordinary life in Paris, working a slow office job, dating a string of not-quite-right men, and fighting off melancholy. The only bright spots in her day are her metro rides across the city and the stories she dreams up about the strangers reading books across from her: the old lady, the math student, the amateur ornithologist, the woman in love, the girl who always tears up at page 247.

One morning, avoiding the office for as long as she can, Juliette finds herself on a new block, in front of a rusty gate wedged open with a book. Unable to resist, Juliette walks through, into the bizarre and enchanting lives of Soliman and his young daughter, Zaide. Before she realizes entirely what is happening, Juliette agrees to become a passeur, Soliman's name for the booksellers he hires to take stacks of used books out of his store and into the world, using their imagination and intuition to match books with readers. Suddenly, Juliette's daydreaming becomes her reality, and when Soliman asks her to move in to their store to take care of Zaide while he goes away, she has to decide if she is ready to throw herself headfirst into this new life.

Big-hearted, funny, and gloriously zany, The Girl Who Reads on the Metro is a delayed coming-of-age story about a young woman who dares to change her life, and a celebration of the power of books to unite us all.]]>

What really pulled this book through was definitely the main character. However, I highly doubt many people could say that. This book was honestly a bit of a mess character development wise, and wasn't that realistic. It was an idealized version of real life and didn't give me much satisfaction or emotional turmoil. It was entertaining, but not much else.

The only thing I felt I could relate to was the main character and not knowing what is your true calling, and also calling yourself ridiculous (haha.)

I can see how a lot of people would enjoy it, but for me it was a bit disappointing. Nevertheless, 3 stars because it was entertaining, if we ignore the fact that I skipped a lot of it (oops).]]>

Ok, so I LOVED the premise. It was intriguing, original, and could be expressed as a 'What if.....' question, which according to Stephen King, is the common denominator in all great books. I did feel like the book focused a little too much on the romance side of things, but did an all around amazing job. The description was INCREDIBLE. The pacing was 99% perfect, a tiny but on the slow side, but still good. The world building was really good, and gave a general view of the world.

This book made me cry more than any other book I have ever read. Full on, ugly crying. It took me a while before I could even look at the book without getting a bit teary eyed. (Whoops)

I won't do a full review on it, but despite only being 4 stars for me (more like 4.5, leaning heavily on the 5 star side), it holds a lot of emotional (and technical) value for me and is in my top ten books of all time.

There is a lot of graphic stuff in this book, which is the only reason I'm not currently running around shoving it in everyone's face. It touched on some things that even *I* (aka someone who can read literally almost anything and be not super affected) cannot stand and make me physically want to vomit. Fly by Night 710437
Enter Eponymous Clent, a smooth-talking con man who seems to love words nearly as much as Mosca herself. Soon Mosca and Clent are living a life of deceit and danger -- discovering secret societies, following shady characters onto floating coffeehouses, and entangling themselves with crazed dukes and double-crossing racketeers. It would be exactly the kind of tale Mosca has always longed to take part in, until she learns that her one true love -- words -- may be the death of her.

"Fly by Night" is astonishingly original, a grand feat of the imagination from a masterful new storyteller.]]>

I loved this book. I have been trying to find it for ages, I can't remember enough and didn't read it recently enough to write a full (or even half) review on it, but I distinctly remember loving it and getting very teary eyed over it, which I rarely do.

A Face Like Glass 12666103 In Caverna, lies are an art ¡ª and everyone's an artist...

In the underground city of Caverna the world's most skilled craftsmen toil in the darkness to create delicacies beyond compare. They create wines that can remove memories, cheeses that can make you hallucinate and perfumes that convince you to trust the wearer even as they slit your throat. The people of Caverna are more ordinary, but for one thing: their faces are as blank as untouched snow. Expressions must be learned. Only the famous Facesmiths can teach a person to show (or fake) joy, despair or fear ¡ª at a price.

Into this dark and distrustful world comes Neverfell, a little girl with no memory of her past and a face so terrifying to those around her that she must wear a mask at all times. For Neverfell's emotions are as obvious on her face as those of the most skilled Facesmiths, though entirely genuine. And that makes her very dangerous indeed...]]>

The Leaving 26073074 Six were taken. Eleven years later, five come back--with no idea of where they've been.

Eleven years ago, six kindergarteners went missing without a trace. After all that time, the people left behind moved on, or tried to.

Until today. Today five of those kids return. They're sixteen, and they are . . . fine. Scarlett comes home and finds a mom she barely recognizes, and doesn't really recognize the person she's supposed to be, either. But she thinks she remembers Lucas. Lucas remembers Scarlett, too, except they're entirely unable to recall where they've been or what happened to them. Neither of them remember the sixth victim, Max. He doesn't come back. Everyone wants answers. Most of all Max's sister Avery, who needs to find her brother--dead or alive--and isn't buying this whole memory-loss story.]]>

I really enjoyed reading this! I was gripped and particularly loved how Scarlet was written, and how the reason Kristen hated Scarlet was not because she liked Lucas (as a lot of books have that sort of love triangle) but instead because she liked Scarlet. This was a really nice addition, and the way that Scarlet reacted was really wholesome and realistic. I also liked how Scarlet ended up breaking up with Lucas, and Lucas got with Avery. It was unexpected but again, realistic. Thoroughly recommend!

Wayward Son (Simon Snow, #2) 44017627
Simon Snow did everything he was supposed to do. He beat the villain. He won the war. He even fell in love. Now comes the good part, right? Now comes the happily ever after¡

So why can¡¯t Simon Snow get off the couch?

What he needs, according to his best friend, is a change of scenery. He just needs to see himself in a new light¡

That¡¯s how Simon and Penny and Baz end up in a vintage convertible, tearing across the American West.

They find trouble, of course. (Dragons, vampires, skunk-headed things with shotguns.) And they get lost. They get so lost, they start to wonder whether they ever knew where they were headed in the first place¡

With Wayward Son, Rainbow Rowell has written a book for everyone who ever wondered what happened to the Chosen One after he saved the day. And a book for everyone who was ever more curious about the second kiss than the first. It¡¯s another helping of sour cherry scones with an absolutely decadent amount of butter.

Come on, Simon Snow. Your hero¡¯s journey might be over ¨C but your life has just begun.]]>
