I almost didn't read this book; the opening scene and first chapter were so depressing - early 20th c. Spokane cops invading a park and beating the sleeping itinerant workers to drive them out of town - - that I almost put it down. Reflection on me, not Jess Walters. It's worth considering that class divisions have been far worse than they are now, life much more precarious, and yet there were people who nevertheless fought for social justice, community, economic equality and the right to a life of dignity and freedom.
