Tyler’s brain is different. Unlike his friends, he has a hard time paying attention in class. He acts out in goofy, over-the-top ways. Sometimes, he even does dangerous things—like cut up a bus seat with a pocketknife or hang out of an attic window.

To the adults in his life, Tyler seems like a troublemaker. But he knows that he’s not. Tyler is curious and creative. He’s the best artist in his grade, and when he can focus, he gets great grades. He doesn’t want to cause trouble, but sometimes he just feels like he can’t control himself.

In Button Pusher, cartoonist Tyler Page uses his own childhood experiences to explore what it means to grow up with ADHD. From diagnosis to treatment and beyond, Tyler’s story is raw and enlightening, inviting you to see the world from a new perspective.]]>

Ginseng Roots: A Memoir 216971212 From the celebrated author of Blankets and Habibi comes a new graphic memoir exploring the class divide, childhood labor, family, and our globalized world—all centered on Wisconsin's ginseng farming industry

When Blankets first published in 2003, Craig Thompson's seminal memoir about first love and faith lost in rural Wisconsin débuted to rapturous acclaim. The winner of two Eisner and three Harvey Awards, it is considered one of the all-time great works of graphic storytelling. Now, in Thompson's long-awaited return to the autobiographical form, comes the story that Blankets left out.

Ginseng Roots follows Thompson and his siblings, who spent the summers of their youth weeding and harvesting rows of coveted American ginseng on rural Wisconsin farms for one dollar an hour. In his trademark breathtaking pen-and-ink work, Thompson interweaves this lost youth with the 300-year-old history of the global ginseng trade and the many lives it has tied together—from ginseng hunters in ancient China to industrial farmers and migrant harvesters in the American Midwest to his own family still grappling with the aftershocks of the bitter past.

Stretching from Marathon, Wisconsin, to Northeast China, Ginseng Roots charts the rise of industrial agriculture, the decline of American labor, and the search for a sense of home in a rapidly changing world.]]>

<![CDATA[Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery": The Authorized Graphic Adaptation]]> 28116794 The classic short story—now in full color

Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" continues to thrill and unsettle readers nearly seven decades after it was first published. By turns puzzling and harrowing, it raises troubling questions about conformity, tradition, and the specter of ritualized violence that haunts even the most bucolic, peaceful village.

This graphic adaptation, published in time for Jackson's centennial, allows readers to experience "The Lottery" as never before, or discover it anew. The visual artist—and Jackson's grandson—Miles Hyman has crafted an eerie vision of the hamlet where the tale unfolds, its inhabitants, and the unforgettable ritual they set into motion. His four-color, meticulously detailed panels create a noirish atmosphere that adds a new dimension of dread to the original tale.

Perfectly timed to the current resurgence of interest in Jackson and her work, Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery": The Authorized Graphic Adaptation masterfully reimagines her iconic story with a striking visual narrative.]]>

Be That Way 63020320
It’s January 1, 1996, and high school junior Christine wants more than anything to be that cool girl everyone notices, like her gorgeous best friend, Landry. She usually hates New Year's resolutions, but this year she vows to be that shiny kind of girl—and record it all in her diary through prose, illustration, and comics.

When Landry drops her, Christine is surprised to discover just how much she doesn’t miss her and her drama.Ěý But a misguided kiss with film-obsessed Paul, her only other close friend, also causes a rift, and she finds herself facing a long, lonely summer.

With nothing to lose, Christine finds a new sense of courage. She gets a job at her neighborhood video store, experiments with her art, and becomes romantically entangled with her next-door neighbor Whit, who’s either the coolest guy ever or a total jerk. In spite of all this, she doesn’t quite feel shiny—until a shocking betrayal shows her the value of the words and drawings she hides in her diary, and she finally understands that she doesn’t need to be cool to be noticed—she only needs to be herself.

Eisner-award winning author and illustrator, Hope Larson, has created a powerful coming-of-age story set in a time before the Internet that explores themes of betrayal, first love, self-expression, and the power of art.

<![CDATA[The Lemonade War: The Graphic Novel]]> 216950464 The first book in the beloved Lemonade War series—a clever blend of humor, math wizardry, and business know-how—is now available in a full-color graphic novel.

Evan Treski is people smart. He’s good at talking to people, even grown-ups.

His younger sister, Jessie, on the other hand, is math smart—but not especially good at understanding people. She knows that feelings are her weakest subject.

With just five days left of summer vacation, Evan and Jessie launch an all-out war to see who can sell the most lemonade before school starts. As the battleground heats up, there really is no telling who will win—and, even more important, if their fight will ever end.

It's the last 5 days of summer until school starts after Labor Day. Since it is so hot with temps climbing up near 100 degrees, Evan decides to make some money by selling lemonade. Maybe he will sell enough lemonade to buy that coveted iPhone! He finds Jessie being pesky and annoying and calls her a baby. Jessie proves that she is no baby and in fact she is very savvy and sets up her own lemonade stand along with Evan’s crush Megan who is new to the neighborhood. Jessie’s business acumen allows her to outpace Evan’s lemonade sales. They make a bet as to who could sell more lemonade before the Labor Day fireworks. The Lemonade War is on!

The sibling rivalry is authentic which is very normal for kids at this age to compete and battle. What makes this story endearing is that they also have each other. While witnessing their parents arguments pre-divorce, Evan and Jessie make a spit vow with each other to never, ever argue in front of their mother. They keep their promise and know they have each other’s back in the long run.

I never read the original Lemonade War books. However, I really enjoyed this graphic novel format with the illustrations, dialogue, story, color and fonts. The educational benefit in this story is Jessie’s awesome business plan, cost/benefit analysis, and her ability to calculate her profit margin. Impressive! I hope there will be more in this graphic novel series so that I can enjoy more adventures with Evan and Jessie.

Evan and Jessie Treski are siblings who live with their divorced mom. They are close but are very different in personalities and intellect. Evan is outgoing and makes friends easily, but he also has difficulty academically, especially in math. Jessie is younger and she has more difficulty making friends, even being targeted by some mean girls. However, she is extremely intelligent, especially in math. In fact, she is so far advanced that she will be skipping a grade and going into the same 4th grade class as Evan! This horrifies Evan because he knows that he will be ridiculed and classified by his friends and classmates as a “dummy.

This graphic novel was almost akin to the philosophy of owning a dog. Or, perhaps a therapy guide for dog owners? Either way it is comedic relief for any dog lover. I don’t think non-dog lovers will appreciate the humor in each vignette. Honestly, I found myself almost in every drawing that started with “You’re not a real dog owner until … Having been a dog owner for most of my life (and highly allergic to cats, thank you very much), only a real dog owner could come up with these scenarios.

Her first day of school is turning out to be as bad as that smelly stupid school bus. She can’t remember her teacher’s name nor the principal’s name. One of her classmates is pushy and mean. But she finally makes friends with Lucille who stole her coveted red seat. The day goes swimmingly along when the entire kindergarten class visits other parts of the school such as the media center, nurse’s office, cafeteria, etc. As the day comes to a close, Junie B. is terrified to go on that yellow smelly stupid school bus again to go home. She takes it upon herself to not go the bus. But what how will she accomplish that?

I had never read these Junie B. Jones books but knew about them. When they were popular in the 1990s, my elementary-aged son wanted to read books that were male-centric, naturally. Therefore, I never had the opportunity to read these books but am very happy to do so now in graphic novel format. I see there will be another in the graphic novel series and am looking forward to reading more about Junie B.!

Even though I wasn’t particularly fond of the character (she was a bit bratty for my tastes), I did really love the artwork, color, fonts, and overall placement of the panels. It’s surely a winner in my “book!

Junie B. (aka Beatrice) Jones quickly reminds you (and not using her inside voice) that she likes to be called Junie B., not just Junie. She is a precocious soon-to-be 6-year-old girl who attends her first day of kindergarten. She must ride the yellow school bus to school, which frightens her because it’s smelly and stupid. Junie B. wants to do whatever it takes to NOT ride that bus.

Swing 200982357 Debut author/illustrator Audrey Meeker playfully explores complicated friendships, gender norms, and navigating other people's expectations in this charming middle grade graphic novel.

Marcus McCalister wants to fit in. So much so that he’s still playing on a soccer team with his childhood friend Ted, despite not liking soccer―or Ted―all that much.

Izzy Briggs wants to stand out. Being labeled the “weird kid for her bold fashion choices is the price an aspiring designer must pay for a life of greatness―but being confident isn't always easy.

So when Izzy and Marcus are paired together to perform a swing dance routine for a gym project, it’s no surprise that everything goes up in flames, including their grade in the class. Until their gym teacher proposes a deal: if the pair performs the swing routine in the upcoming talent show, they’ll receive extra credit and a passing grade. Atana’s island may be quiet and peaceful, but mostly, it’s lonely. With the outside world full of magic hunters who would stop at nothing to capture a mermaid like her, Atana has never been brave enough to swim far from her island’s shores and seek the answers to her mysterious past—until a firebird named Ren unexpectedly crashes into her life.

Ren’s arrival does not go unnoticed, as it has been hundreds of years since a firebird last landed on Earth. Determined to both protect Ren and finally chase the answers she’s longed for, Atana embarks on an adventure that takes her and the firebird to strange new islands and entangles them with the powerful yet secretive Witch Queen.

Generous though the Witch Queen’s offer of protection may be, an invitation to the Blue Palace can’t come without a price. And while the Palace’s splendid halls and library might hold the key to Atana’s past, will she be willing to pay the cost when it risks her chance of a bright new future?]]>

<![CDATA[Bloody Mary: A Graphic Biography of Mary Tudor]]> 220159970 An elegant, intimate graphic novel retelling of Mary “the Bloody Tudor’s infamous life and evolution from loyal subject to royal tyrant.

The story of Mary Tudor –â€ oldest child and daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, sister to the famous Elizabeth I –â€ as never told before.Ěý

A chronological telling of Mary’s life as “told by her spans her magnificent life, starting from her “first memory at the age of two to becoming the first queen to inherit the throne of an England in disarray. Once rejected at birth, Mary was certain the cause of suffering was her subjects rejection of the one true Catholicism. Her zealous campaign to re-Catholicize England was unrelenting in its brutality, re-christening her, “Mary, the Bloody.

The Tudors famously used fine art to define their reign. <![CDATA[The Spy Coast (The Martini Club, #1)]]> 199319103
A retired CIA operative in small-town Maine tackles the ghosts of her past in this fresh take on the spy thriller from New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen.

Former spy Maggie Bird came to the seaside village of Purity, Maine, eager to put the past behind her after a mission went tragically wrong. These days, she’s living quietly on her chicken farm, still wary of blowback from the events that forced her early retirement.

But when a body turns up in Maggie’s driveway, she knows it’s a message from former foes who haven’t forgotten her. Maggie turns to her local circle of old friends—all retirees from the CIA—to help uncover the truth about who is trying to kill her, and why. This “Martini Club of former spies may be retired, but they still have a few useful skills that they’re eager to use again, if only to spice up their rather sedate new lives.

Complicating their efforts is Purity’s acting police chief, Jo Thibodeau. More accustomed to dealing with rowdy tourists than homicide, Jo is puzzled by Maggie’s reluctance to share information—and by her odd circle of friends, who seem to be a step ahead of her at every turn.

As Jo’s investigation collides with the Martini Club’s maneuvers, Maggie’s hunt for answers will force her to revisit a clandestine career that spanned the globe, from Bangkok to Istanbul, from London to Malta. The ghosts of her past have returned, but with the help of her friends—and the reluctant Jo Thibodeau—Maggie might just be able to save the life she’s built.]]>

Unfortunately, the campers and counselor monopolize Trina’s time, leaving Emmie feeling deserted without anyone to hang out with.

Joe Lungo, the secondary character, had no intentions of attending the class trip but his BFFs Tyler and Anthony persuade him to attend because they will have lots of fun like the Three Musketeers. Until they don’t. Tyler (also Emmie’s crush) meets an athletic girl at the camp who claims him as her own and Emmie is heartbroken. And Anthony hangs out with his girlfriend, leaving Joe in the dust.

Well, what can Emmie and Joe do but make the best of the situation. They are paired up as partners on the bus travels and activities. Joe is the class clown and Emmie learns how to deal with his off-handed jokes which humiliate her and makes her become even more quiet and isolated. I loved reading how Emmie and Joe navigate through their unintended camp partnership while dealing with being turned away from their friends and family.

As always, there is a lot to learn on how to deal with situations and issues from these series books. The excerpts are always cute and funny without being too overly gross and offensive. The author has quite the imagination with the text and illustrations providing exactly what a middle school reader might be thinking. I hope this is not the end of the series because I always want more!

Every book in the Emmie & Friends series focuses on a main character and a secondary character. We are back to Emmie Douglass, aka Invisible Emmie, the shy, quiet and intelligent character who started the series. As a middle school-aged girl, she doesn’t always have a lot of self-confidence. I have read a few graphic novels where the Asian mother is depicted as negative and overbearing. I find this an unwarranted stereotype and I hope this was strictly from the author’s point of view. Asian mothers are caring and nurturing so it troubles me when the opposite may be presented to the reader for entertainment value.

The artwork was simple without overwhelming details which worked perfectly. The colors comprised of a limited palette, which again totally worked well for the pages. I didn’t find any of the pages particularly humorous but they were amusing and enjoyable. This was a short graphic novel and I look forward to reading the next in the series.

I always enjoy reading about Asians who migrate to another country for a better life and try to adapt and adjust to cultural differences. Historically, my own ancestors who did the same. In this graphic novel, we are offered passages of the author’s life-altering move with his father from South Korea to Canada at a young age; his mother joins them afterwards. The vignettes were entertaining and enjoyable, but the pages switch between present day and flashbacks. I found this a bit disconcerting as it interrupted the flow for me and would have preferred a more linear timeline. I got the sense that these pages were part of a web comic and the strips were compiled into a collection.

I truly enjoyed this story. It was akin to a realistic fairy tale. The story provides fairy tale rules. I love how there is representation for POC and learning disabilities. The artwork and colors are beautiful and fun. The speech bubbles and text were so unique. You will find flowers drawn on the perimeter of speech bubbles to denote romance or crushing. Text may be thrown here in there outside of the speech bubbles in varying fonts, boldness and directions. In another graphic novel I may find this disconcerting, but it totally works for this graphic novel!

Brielle is attending Once Upon A Time University for her freshman year. She bumps into Atohi (aka Bear) while working her job at the bookshop. Bear is a rugged rugby player for OUAT’s Princes team, but deep down is a romantic at heart because he loves reading about fairy tales and romance and writes poetry. Brielle and Bear instantly crush on one another. The story progresses where they try to fit in with their peers Brielle with the snobby Soleil and Luna Guild (at her behest but with strong pleading and encouragement by her BFF Rosalie) and Bear with his macho team mates and adoring eyes from the cheerleaders.

Brownstone: A Graphic Novel 53154461 An exciting teen coming-of-age epic from author Samuel Teer and debut graphic novel artist Mar Julia, Brownstone is a vivid, sweeping, ultimately hopeful story about navigating your heritage even when you feel like you don’t quite fit in.

Almudena has always wondered about the dad she never met.

Now, with her white mother headed on a once-in-a-lifetime trip without her, she’s left alone with her Guatemalan father for an entire summer. Xavier seems happy to see her, but he expects her to live in (and help fix up) his old, broken-down brownstone. And all along, she must navigate the language barrier of his rapid-fire Spanish—which she doesn’t speak.

As Almudena tries to adjust to this new reality, she gets to know the residents of Xavier’s Latin American neighborhood. Each member of the community has their own joys and heartbreaks as well as their own strong opinions on how this young Latina should talk, dress, and behave. Some can’t understand why she doesn’t know where she comes from. Others think she’s “not brown enough to fit in.

But time is running out for Almudena and Xavier to get to know each other, and the key to their connection may ultimately lie in bringing all these different elements together. Fixing a broken building is one thing, but turning these stubborn individuals into a found family might take more than this one summer.]]>

When young Heidi is sent to live with her grandfather in a small shepherd’s hut in the Swiss Alps, everyone expects him to turn her away. But Heidi is quick to take on any challenge, whether it’s keeping an eye on the rebellious goats, learning to read, or melting Grandfather’s icy heart.

Heidi’s adventures take her up and down her beloved mountain, from picnics in the high alpine meadows all the way to the distant streets of Frankfurt and a city life she could never have imagined. But when homesickness strikes, Heidi must weigh old friendships with new ones and find her place in an expanding world.

Uncomfortably Happily 29875903 Uncomfortably, Happily is the story of a young couple finding their way. Burdened by unmet comics deadlines and high rent, our narrator and his wife know they must make a change. Convinced the absence of traffic noise will ease his writer’s block, our pair welcomes the idea of building a life from scratch. Deciding on a home atop an uninhabited mountain, they excitedly embrace the charms of their new rural existence.

From tending to the land and attempting grocery runs through snow, to the complexities of fighting depression in seclusion, the move does not immediately prove to be the golden ticket they’d hoped for, and the silence of the mountain poses as much of an obstacle to output as the sirens of the city. Through it all, though, we see simple pleasures seep in and gain prominence over these commercial, and, often, comparatively trivial worries: the smell of the forest, the calming weight of enveloping snow, and the gratification of a stripped down life making art begin to muffle other concerns.

Originally published in Korean to great acclaim and winning the Manhwa Today award, Uncomfortably, Happily uniquely explores our narrator’s inner world. Hong propels the comic with gorgeously detailed yet simple art, sharing the story of two lives unfolding slowly, sometimes uncomfortably, yet ultimately, happily.]]>

When Tabitha Laurie was growing up, a visit to Sommerland saved her belief in true love, even as her parents marriage was falling apart. Now she’s landed her dream job at the theme park’s prestigious summer program, where she can make magical memories for other kids, guests, and superfans just like her. All she has to do is audition for one of the coveted princess roles, and soon her dreams will come true.

There’s just one problem. The heroes and heroines at Sommerland are all, well thin. And no matter how much Tabi lives for the magic, she simply doesn't fit the park's idea of a princess.

Spring has sprung in River Heights! The annual Flower Sculpture contest is in a couple of days and everyone in town is working hard to finish their floral works of art. But Nancy, Bess, and George are most excited to see the world-famous pop singer, Miss LaLa, perform. The superstar grew up in River Heights and has agreed to kick off the contest with a song. And just when the girls thought life couldn’t get any better, they run into Miss LaLa herself! The singer is in a bit of a pickle though: She brought a giant hat made of white peonies for the show but she doesn’t have a refrigerator big enough to store it in. George thinks quickly and offers to put it in her mom’s catering refrigerator.

But when the girls check on the hat the next morning they see something has gone terribly wrong. Half of the snowy white blooms are wilted and brown! They use their detective skills to rule out a blackout. And George can’t remember if she locked the door last night. Could someone have snuck into the kitchen and switched the fresh flowers with droopy ones?

Nancy and her friends are determined to find out! Could it be Madame Withers, whose signature wilted rose perfume was rejected by Miss LaLa? Perhaps it was the famous flower artist Pierre, who was angry that Miss LaLa was the star of the show. Or it maybe it was Benjamin Bing, who ruined his flower sculpture with brown hair spray and had no more white peonies to replace them. It’s up to the Clue Crew—and you—to find out!]]>

Look Both Ways 221482676
Inspired by his decades-long love of cars, internationally bestselling author Linwood Barclay envisions a world in which automotive technology outpaces our wildest dreams—and our darkest nightmares in a gripping new novel of action and suspense.

These headlights are watching you

The media have descended on Garrett Island, a small, isolated community that is the setting of a visionary experiment. All the residents cars were sent to the mainland and for the past month the islanders have been “driving the Arrival, a revolutionary autonomous vehicle. With a simple voice command, an Arrival will take you wherever you want to go and, because the fleet is networked and aware of one another, car travel is now 100% safe. The future, it seems, has arrived.

As the excitement reaches a fever pitch, Sandra Montrose islander, single mom, and public relations executive prepares for Arrival Inc.’s flashy press event. Sandra is more than ready for this new world. Her husband died after falling asleep at the wheel and she’s relieved that her two teens, Archie and Katie, will never need driver’s licenses.

But as the celebratory day gets underway, disaster strikes. A visiting journalist has vanished, possibly murdered. Before long, the Arrivals run amok, no longer taking orders from their passengers. They’re starting to organize. They’re beginning to hunt. And they seem hell-bent on killing any human they encounter.

Is this all just a tragic accident, a technological malfunction with deadly consequences? Or were the vehicles programmed to act this way in a cruel act of corporate sabotage? Or could it be that the Arrivals have a mind of their own?

Fasten your seatbelts it’s going to be a bumpy ride.]]>

<![CDATA[A Career in Books: A Novel about Friends, Money, and the Occasional Duck Bun]]> 60018573 A Career in Books is a graphic novel for everyone who's wanted to work with books and had no idea what it entailed. It's for those who were taken aback by that first paycheck. It's for those who wanted a literary career even in the face of systemic racism, who dealt with the unique challenges of coming from an immigrant family, and whose group chat is their lifeline.

Shirin, Nina, and Silvia have just gotten their first jobs in publishing, at a University Press, a traditional publisher, and a trust-fund kid's indie publisher, respectively. And it's... great? ÂŻ_(ă)_/ÂŻ They know they're paying their dues and the challenges they meet (Shirin's boss just assumes she knows Cantonese; Nina cannot get promoted by sheer force of will; and Silvia has to deal with daily microaggressions) are just part of "a career in books." When they meet their elderly neighbor, Veronica Vo, and discover she's a Booker Prize winner dubbed the "Tampax Tolstoy" by the press, each woman finds a thread of inspiration from Veronica's life to carry on her own path. And the result is full of twists and revelations that surprise not only the reader but the women themselves.

Charming, wry, and with fantastic black-and-white illustrations, A Career in Books is a modern ode to Rona Jaffe's The Best of Everything, and perfect for fans of Good Talk, Younger, and The Bold Type, as readers chart the paths of three Asian-American women trying to break through the world of books with hilarious, incisive, and heartbreaking results.]]>

I enjoy reading about Jen and Andy’s ongoing friendship/sisterhood and how little sister Reece is just as pesky as ever. It’s wintertime and frigidly cold and snowy on Peapod Farm. It’s time to tap the maple trees for sap and cook it into maple syrup. Walter built a shack on the farm strictly for the cooking purposes, hence the title Sugar Shack. Besides the making of syrup, Jen is responsible for so many other chores on the farm including daily hauling of chopped wood and is encouraged to join the 4H club.

We also learn about Andy’s heritage and her bat mitzvah, her ongoing relationship with her crush Eddie, who is also Jen’s very good friend. This is a beautiful coming of age graphic novel. The first book took place in the summer, the second book in autumn and now this book in winter. I understand this is the final entry in the series, but could there possibly be a fourth book, set in the spring? Crossing my fingers and toes.

What a pleasant surprise to see there was a new book in the Peapod Farm series. I so enjoyed the first two books (despite the jerk stepfather Walter) that I decided to reread them to refresh my memory on the characters. I’m happy to say that the third book is just as good. Not only does the author illustrate the scenes and facial emotions to perfection, but the font and colors are also superior.

So when she witnesses a murder in the shadowy alley behind the florist shop, Quinn immediately writes down every terrifying detail of the incident before her amnesia wipes it away.

By the time the police arrive, there’s no body, no crime scene, and no clues. The killing seems as erased from reality as it is from Quinn’s mind . . . until the flashbacks begin. Suddenly, fragments of memories are surfacing—mere glimpses of that horrible night, but enough to convince Quinn that somewhere, locked in her subconscious, is the key to solving the case . . . and she’s not the only one who knows. Somebody else has realized Quinn is a threat that needs to be eliminated. Now, with her life on the line and only her notes to guide her, Quinn sets out to find a killer she doesn’t remember, but can’t forget . . .

Recent graduate Nelly O'Hare was looking forward to studying the picturesque coral reefs of Aloha Lagoon, Hawaii, expecting her new job to be full of sun, surf, and satisfying work. Luckily her best friend, Kiki Hepburn, is no stranger to murder investigations, and along with Auntie Akamai and the loud-mouthed Paulie the parrot, she vows to help Nelly find the true killer. Especially when Nelly discovers that someone seems to have been sabotaging the study findings.

With danger lurking just below the murky surface, Nelly is finding out not everything in Aloha Lagoon is as sunny as it seems. As Nelly closes in on the killer, someone is closing in on Nelly...and if she's not careful, the coral won't be the only thing endangered in Aloha Lagoon!]]>

Don't Cause Trouble 208185048
But stepping into school with the same bowl haircut his mom insists on giving him, and wearing the extra-discounted thrift shop clothes she buys him doesn't quite make for the first day of his dreams. Things only get worse when he’s placed in an ESL class despite English being his first (and only) language. The journey ahead is full of awkward, painful, and downright embarrassing moments.

Ming’s dad always tells him, “Get good grades! Don’t cause trouble! But with two new friends by his side, and a few tricks up his sleeve, Ming is determined to make some changes.

Perfect for fans of Raina Telgemeier and Jerry Craft, Don’t Cause Trouble is a funny, warmhearted graphic novel that will resonate with readers who are looking for a place to belong.]]>

Ming’s story is so interesting as he manages to gain friends and deal with his classmates who have the potential to taunt him. Ming has such tenacity as he finds ways to earn money to buy the coveted red Air Elevates sports shoes.

I was able to relate so much to Ming’s story, being a non-Chinese speaking Chinese-American and the only one of maybe two or three other Chinese-Americans in junior high. The stares, the teasing, the taunts, the admiration, the curiosity been there, done that. Luckily, I did not have to deal with a God-fearing mom like Ming’s but my parents often spoke in Chinese when they did not want me to know something, just like Ming’s. I was not crazy about the art style nor the color. The color was extremely bold and very in your face. There were red splotches across the girls cheeks where to indicate blushing or anger but looked very awkward and misplaced. What’s up with that? It’s as if someone took a broad paint brush and splashed paint across their cheeks, not an attractive look.

This was a French to English translated story. As a basketball fan, I had the impression it was basketball themed (my mistake) but it turned out to be a soccer story, which would appeal to wider audiences. I enjoyed the story just fine, but just didn’t care for the overall design.

Soccer is Barbara’s passion. As team captain she is so excited that her high school team the Rosigny Roses have qualified after two years to make it to the nationals. However, the club president has pulled the plug. The Roses play second fiddle to the boys team as they are made a priority to go to the nationals forcing the girls team to forfeit. This infuriates Barbara as it is a blatant example of gender bias in sports. Barbara and her team find loopholes and workarounds to play in the championship with minimum support from Barbara’s mother and boyfriend.

Stella knows fifth grade will be the best year ever. Her closest friends, Emiko and Latasha, are in her class and they all got the teacher they wanted. Then their favorite television show, Witchlins, announces a new guidebook and an online game!

But when the classwork starts piling up, Stella struggles to stay on top. Why does it take her so long to read? And how can she keep up with friends in the Witchlins game if she can’t get through the text-heavy guidebook? It takes loving teachers and her family to recognize that Stella has a learning difference, and after a dyslexia diagnosis she gets the support and tools she needs to succeed.

Bestselling author Kami Garcia was inspired to write this special book by her daughter’s dyslexia journey; her own neurodivergent experience; and the many students she taught over the years. With subtle design and formatting choices making this story accessible to all readers, Mixed-Up shows that our differences don’t need to separate us.

Mixed-Up has been lettered in Dyslexie to make reading as comfortable as possible for dyslexic readers.

Take Your Breath Away 60740393
A missing woman. A husband suspected. The truth will....
Take Your Breath Away

From the 'New York Times' best-selling author of 'Find Your First' and 'Elevator Pitch' comes a gripping psychological thriller about a formerly missing woman who has suddenly returned under mysterious circumstances.

One weekend, while Andrew Mason was on a fishing trip, his wife, Brie, vanished without a trace. Most people assumed Andy had gotten away with murder - it's always the husband, isn't it? - but the police couldn’t build a strong case against him. For a while, Andy hit rock bottom he drank too much, was abandoned by his friends, nearly lost his business and became a pariah in the place he had once called home.

Now, six years later, Andy has put his life back together. He’s sold the house he shared with Brie and moved away for a fresh start. When he hears his old house has been bulldozed and a new house built in its place, he’s not bothered. He’s settled with a new partner, Jayne, and life is good.

But Andy’s peaceful world is about to shatter. One day, a woman shows up at his old address, screaming, "Where’s my house? What’s happened to my house?" And then, just as suddenly as she appeared, the woman who bears a striking resemblance to Brie is gone. The police are notified and old questions and dark suspicions resurface.

Could Brie really be alive after all these years? If so, where has she been? It soon becomes clear that Andy’s future, and the lives of those closest to him, depends on discovering what the hell is going on. The trick will be whether he can stay alive long enough to unearth the answers.

Band Nerd: A Graphic Novel 213626822 Perfect for fans of Roller Girl and New Kid comes a heartfelt coming-of-age story about music, family, and friendship wherein twelve-year-old Lucy Carver must navigate life as band nerd in a new school, all while competing for a top flute soloist spot in band. But for Lucy, facing the music means dealing with the problems at home.

Middle school is tough—thank goodness there’s band.

For twelve-year-old Lucy Carver, music isn’t just a way of life; it’s an escape from homework and an off-key homelife with her alcoholic father. When Lucy starts seventh grade at Windley School of the Arts, with its high academic standards and even higher artistic expectations, it becomes much harder to keep life in tune.

Determined to be the conductor of her own life, Lucy focuses all her energy on beating snobby Tolli Claybourne for first chair flute. As things spiral out of control with her parents and her schoolwork, Lucy grows desperate for a win. Just when she thinks she's hitting all the right notes, an accident leaves her unable to play and her mother threatens to withdraw her for poor grades. Now Lucy must sabotage Tolli or give up on her dream.

Packed with heart, Band Nerd is a poignant coming-of-age story about resilience, family, and using your voice to find harmony even during life’s most discordant moments.Ěý±Ő±Ő>

<![CDATA[I Witnessed: The Lizzie Borden Story]]> 214998713 Charlie witnesses a murder at his next-door neighbor Lizzie Borden's house, but will anyone believe what he saw? For fans of I Survived and Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales but with a true crime twist, read about Lizzie Borden’s trial of the century in this I Witnessed graphic novel.

On the morning of August 4, 1892, fourteen-year-old Charlie sees a horrifying act unfold at his next-door neighbor Lizzie Borden’s house—something he can’t keep to himself. Yet no one believes what Charlie saw . . . not even when Andrew and Abby Borden are found dead later that morning. Charlie is determined to use all that he witnessed to help find the murderer…even if it means having to face the prime suspect, his enigmatic neighbor Lizzie Borden, accused of killing her own father and stepmother. What began as one innocent moment of being in the wrong place at the wrong time becomes a suspenseful game of cat and mouse as Lizzie faces the trial of the century, and Charlie must ask Can you ever really know someone’s true character?

Inspired by the real fourteen-year-old neighbor of Lizzie Borden, Charlie's story offers a fictional kid POV rooted in historical facts about the Borden family, the house, and the infamous trial. Case fact sidebars offer additional nonfiction elements to the story.]]>

One night Charlie sees the silhouette of two people behind a curtain in the Borden home, with one bludgeoning the other. Not to his surprise, Andrew and Abby Borden are found murdered. In the day and age where forensic evidence was not born, the police rely on circumstantial evidence such as a clean axe head without a handle. Charlie takes it upon himself to find out the truth while reporters, curious onlookers, and police constantly are outside the Borden and Churchill homes.

Having watched some movies about Lizzie Borden, it is amazing how the true story has become a legend, leading up to the rhyme of 40 whacks for her mother and one more for her father. Truth bends over time and eventually becomes a pretzeled puzzle. Adelaide and Charlie were actually real neighbors of the Bordens and I enjoyed the young neighbor’s perspective.

This is a historical fiction story of the events leading up to and the aftermath of the horrid night Lizzie Borden’s father and stepmother were found murdered. It’s told from the viewpoint of Charlie Churchill, Lizzie’s next-door neighbor. Charlie lives with his widowed mother Adelaide and his young cousin Lucy stays with them during the summer. Charlie’s mother is a nosy Nellie and constantly watches the Borden home from the kitchen window. Charlie has picked up his mother’s busybody habit and watches the Borden home from his second-floor bedroom window.

<![CDATA[Besties: Prank War (The World of Click #3)]]> 214325854
Trent and Sawyer make their Besties series debut with a bang and a crash! These two friends never back down from a challenge, whether it presents itself at the skate park or in the school hallway, but will that determination get them in over their heads?

Between helping with their friend Tyler’s RPG campaign, catching streams of pro skateboarder Trixie Sampson’s new video series, and—oh yeah—homework, Trent and Sawyer are more than a little busy…but when Trixie announces a competition that might result in the boys getting to meet her and her crew, how could they resist entering?!

The duo become single-minded in their quest to be the lucky “Trixsters to win the prize, but it’s not easy pulling off the perfect prank and capturing it on video. With their friends growing resentful of being unwilling targets and after drawing the ire of the class prank queen, Nat, the buddies soon find themselves losing at their own game. As an all-out prank war spins out of control, Trent and Sawyer realize they might have pranked themselves by starting it.

New York Times bestselling author Kayla Miller, coauthor Jeffrey Canino, and illustrator Sarah Turner, with her playful and expressive art style, deliver another vibrant and unique portrayal of middle school friendship in this latest title in the Besties series.]]>

At first the pranks smart off small and rather harmless. That is until they pull a prank on Natasha (“Nat), who is known to be rather fierce with her temper. Nat did not appreciate being the focus of Trent and Sawyer’s prank and turns the tables on them, one-upping them on every one of their pranks. It becomes a prank war, getting to a point where their peers no longer find them amusing or funny, but rather an annoyance. When does this all end? And what will be the final prank to end all pranks?

I enjoyed the story although I am not one who usually likes stories that involve jokes on people or pranks. Admittedly I felt the pranking went on way too long and the parents, teachers and school staff did not handle the shenanigans very well. I did enjoy this illustrator much more than the previous graphic novels. The drawings were delightful and the color was fabulous. I still have difficulty with the font used in this series and the Click series. I always read the â€aâ€ as â€dâ€ and it can be rather annoying. I wish they would change the fonts to something friendlier. I love the Click series more than this World of Click series but I do appreciate how the World series rotates the focus on different characters.

In his Abuela Emma’s house, they speak Spanish 100% of the time so that Santi can learn. Those in the community are surprised to hear that Santi never learned Spanish at home, which embarrasses him. To further add to his discomfort, he speaks Spanish like a gringo. Abuela Emma’s lady friends gently tease Santi about his lack of accent and Santi even overhears Abuela Emma admit he may never lose his lack of accent. Santi takes this as criticism and is humiliated, his shame building up to a point where he does not speak Spanish at all. He takes his frustration out on his friends on the soccer field where harm comes to one of his secret soccer club friends.

Something needs to be done with Santi. Will the Latinx community be a help or further hinder in Santi’s progress? Or should he just go back home to his parents?

Mind you, I am a Chinese-American and have been to many authentic Chinese restaurants, including those in mainland China and Hong Kong. I have to say that I have not seen many of these dishes with the odd names on the menu. The recipes were rather long and complicated and require quite a menagerie of sauces and ingredients, so being a lazy cook, I think I will just stick with my favorite dishes at Chinese restaurants.

Be forewarned, your mouth will definitely be savoring those tasty dishes. I sure do miss my grandmother’s Cantonese cooking!!

I have read another novel which tells stories about how some of those Chinese dishes got those crazy names, such as the book’s title Buddha Jumps Over a Wall. Full of historical fact or fiction, it makes for a great graphic novel which also includes endearing illustrations to accompany the stories. To add even more flavor (get the pun there?) recipes are included for each dish.

I enjoyed the story and I’m not sure if I actually knew about the afikomen (I am a gentile and my husband is Jewish), so I did learn something. However, to be honest and brutally frank, the illustrations were downright unattractive, even ugly. Each black and white panel was extremely busy and overdone with way too much unnecessary detail, often giving me a headache. Even the font used seemed like it was intended for Nervous Nelly and made me uncomfortable. It caused me to hurriedly rush through the graphic novel just to end it. This is not a good sign.

Half of my attraction to graphic novels is the artwork and illustrations. The other half is the story, color, and lettering. Sorry to say that this book did not meet even the halfway mark, meeting perhaps just 30% of what I consider a good graphic novel.

This is a tale of finding the afikomen which was lost during a seder. With the help of a small talking goat, the Wise Child travels back in time to visit his various ancestors during their seders, finally going back as far as to the original seder prior to the exodus from Egypt.

The Kiss Bet, Vol. 1 213870658 In this adorable coming-of-age comic for fans of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Faith Erin Hicks and Rainbow Rowell’s Pumpkinheads, Sara Lin has decided now is the time: she’s going to make her first kiss, something special and magical, happen.

In this adorable coming-of-age comic for fans of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Faith Erin Hicks and Rainbow Rowell’s Pumpkinheads, Sara Lin has decided now is the time: she’s going to make her first kiss, something special and magical, happen.

It’s senior year and Sara Lin just turned eighteen. She’s got great friends, a cool dad (or so he thinks), and a whole lot ahead of her. The last thing she needs is to worry about having her first kiss.

But that’s all about to change because her good pal Patrick just challenged her to a bet that will either lead to love, heartbreak, or embarrassment…or maybe all three.

Sara Lin understands that her first kiss is a rite of passage, one that she takes very seriously, even if everyone around her doesn’t. She wants it to be special–true love’s kiss–and wants to fall for someone she really cares about, not just get it over with.

Along the way, as Sarah explores her relationship options with three different boys...she discovers that life isn't a fairytale and romance is inherently complex. It's messy and complicated, but boy, it sure can be fun.]]>

Not only that, but Sara is failing calculus and her teacher assigns a tutor to help her. Well, guess who the tutor is the exact same stranger who she asked for a kiss at the subway station. Oh, the horror! Oliver is new to Sara’s school, a genius at calculus but short on social cues and patience. The subway incident was never brought up by either Sara or Oliver. Does Oliver even remember or does he recognize that it was Sara who asked for the kiss? Oliver’s older brother Joe is in Sara’s class and the school’s new heartthrob. Sara is one of the ones with a crush and hopes he will be her first real kiss.

I am usually not a fan of YA graphic novels. I usually make them a DNF due to excessive foul language, inappropriate situations, ridiculous stories, etc. However, I was so pleasantly surprised with this graphic novel. First off, the story is absolutely ADORABLE! It is totally cute, funny, and sweet. To top it off, the illustrations are perfect, depicting the exact facial expressions, reactions, and emotions. It reminds me very much of Svetlana Chmakova’s Berryville Middle School graphic novel series.

Knowing that there will be another upcoming volume, I am hopeful that there will be even more volumes. After all, we just HAVE to find out whether Sara ever gets her first kiss or not and I will be first in line to read it.

Sara Lin, a senior in high school, just turned 18 years old and she’s never been kissed before. Patrick, her friend since forever, makes a bet for her to ask an attractive stranger who appears to be about the same age at the subway station to kiss her. Sara accepts the bet but didn’t quite expect the stranger to yell that she is a weirdo. Sara will never live this down as it goes viral at school.

Halfway to Somewhere 213618146 New school, new country, but only half a family?! Embark on a coming of age journey with a middle school teen navigating their parent’s divorce while moving to a new country in this stunning graphic novel.

Ave thought moving to Kansas would be boring and flat after enjoying the mountains and trails in Mexico, but at least they would have their family with them. Unfortunately, while Ave, their mom, and their younger brother are relocating to the US, Ave's father and older sister will be staying in Mexico...permanently. Their parents are getting a divorce.

As if learning a whole new language wasn't hard enough, and now a Middle-Schooler has to figure out a new family dynamic...and what this means for them as they start middle school with no friends.

Jose Pimienta's stunningly illustrated and thought provoking middle graphic novel is about exploring identity, understanding family, making friends with a language barrier, and above all else, learning what truly makes a place a home.]]>

Ave (they/their pronoun) Rendón moves from Mexicali with their mother and younger brother Ramón to Lawrence, Kansas, home of the University of Kansas Jay Hawks, where mom Joss has a new job as a linguist. It’s hard enough that Ave’s parents are separated with an imminent divorce, but their older sister Cruz, whom they are very close with, is living with the father back in Mexicali. Ave is having a difficult time adjusting, not just with the drastic relocation and being biracial but also with their gender identity. Attending middle school is hard enough without adding the broken English as an obstacle and they don’t make friends as easily as Ramón. Ave recalls with great fondness the times the family would go hiking at La Rumorosa and constantly dreams of the times when the family will hopefully be reunited.
