Otfried Preußler

He won the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis in 1972 for Krabat.
He has sold roughly 50 million copies worldwide.
He was born in Liberec (German: Reichenberg), Czechoslovakia. His forefathers had lived in this area since the 15th century, working in the glass industry. His parents were teachers. After he graduated school in 1942, in the midst of World War II, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht Heer. Although he survived the military action on the Eastern Front, he was taken prisoner as a 21-year-old lieutenant in 1944. He spent the next five years in various POW camps in the Tatar Republic.
After his release in June 1949, he was lucky to find his displaced relatives and his fiancée, Annelies Kind in the Bavarian town of Rosenheim. They celebrated their wedding that same year.
Between 1953 and 1970 he was initially a primary school teacher, then a school principal in Rosenheim. There his talents as a storyteller and illustrator were put to good use, and often the stories he told the children would later be written down and published.
Preußler died on February 18, 2013 in Prien, Chiemsee.

Das Kleine Gespenst -- Original German Text
Although creepy stories with dangerous and vengeful spirits have never been all that much to my reading tastes (and in fact often tend to rather frighten me), Otfried Preußler's 1966 Das kleine Gespenst (The Little Ghost in its English translation by the late Anthea Bell) is for all intents and purposes not at all the former, not in any manner morbid or gruesome but simply a fun and engaging tale of a diminutive and lovable castle ghost who gets a bit more than what it bargained and actually had secretly wished for (and I am using the neutral pronoun it here as in the story, as in Das kleine Gespenst, Preußler actually never does point out whether his little ghost is a male or a female entity) when inadvertently nighttime kind of becomes daytime (clock wise) for the little ghost and it starts haunting the town of Eulenberg during the day and no longer at night (being rendered due to sunlight from a white ghost into a black hued spirit, disrupting Eulenberg's historical reenactment pageant of the town being attacked by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War because the little ghost naturally assumes that the Swedes have in fact legitimately returned to fire their cannons and besiege the town, and indeed creating much havoc and mayhem for all until the town hall clock is fixed and the little ghost is finally able to return to its castle and a nighttime and ghostly white existence).
One of my favourite stories from my childhood, from before we immigrated to Canada in 1976 is Das kleine Gespenst and also a story that for me has certainly also stood the test of time so to speak, for when I reread Das kleine Gespenst early this morning, not only was my reading experience a nostalgic delight, I in fact have enjoyed it as just as much as I did as an eight year old (when I read Das kleine Gespenst in grade two, the first time for school, and then repeatedly for my own pleasure and enjoyment).
Now the only small caveat that I do (but indeed rather grudgingly at that) leave is that yes, within the storyline of Das kleine Gespenst, the little ghost is rendered from its nighttime white colouring into black by the sun's rays (and very much unhappy about this), and while I personally do not at all consider this a scenario with possible ethnic or racial implications, I know that there are indeed some readers and reviewers who unfortunately tend to find this aspect of Das kleine Gespenst as not all that politically correct. But yes indeed, even though I for one do not in fact consider the little ghost's frustration as a black spirit haunting Eulenberg in the daytime instead of a white spirit of the night problematic or in any manner racially charged, I still feel as though I should at least mention this in case others might have a different attitude and would feel offended (even though I really do NOT AT ALL think that there is anything to be offended by in Das kleine Gespenst and that any ethnicity based issues with the ghost turning from white to black are in my opinion rather overly and annoyingly exaggerated and therefore also making a huge and silly mountain out of the proverbial molehill).

War süß geschrieben und als Hörspiel gut aufgezogen, aber ich kam einfach nicht in die Geschichte rein. Sie hat mich nicht erreicht...

Čia yra klasika. Mano vaikystės klasika, tavo vaikystės klasika ir, tikiuosi, mano dukros. Aš kaip šiandien pamenu, kai būdama vaikas, bibliotekoje pas močiutę radau seną nutrintą knygą "Plėšikas Hocenplocas". Jau buvau ne naujokė knygų pasaulyje, tad mokėjau skaityti ženklus: knyga trinta, nutrinta, net keli lapai pasileidę - vadinasi, gera, nes daug kas skaitė. Ženklai neapgavo - knyga buvo puiki. "Suvalgiau" ją per kelias dienas. Na, o tada žanro klasika - suradus gerą autorių, suskaityti viską, ką jis rašo - būtina. taip mano rankose atsidūrė "Vaiduokliukas".
"Vaiduokliuko" leidimas buvo toks silpnokas - silpnas įrišimas, "skysti" lapai, bet koks lobis slėpėsi viduje. Būtina akcentuoti, kad "Nieko rimto" leidykla knygą gerokai patobulino - kietas viršelis, tvirtas įrišimas, stori puslapiai ir net spalvotos iliustracijos. Jei neklystu, jų net daugiau nei originale. Nostalgijų nostalgija. Kaip neramu buvo, ar mano dukrai irgi patiks. Gal čia tik nostalgija mane veda?
Nepatikėsit kaip apsidžiaugiau kaip nenuoramos vaiduokliuko nuotykiai pavergė ir ją. Kas vakarą skaitėme kaip vaiduokliuko svajonė išsipildė ir kaip ji vieto to, kad atsikeltų naktį, prabudo dieną. Ištisa maišalynė. Oi kiek nuotykių.
Skaitykite savo vaikams. Nupūskite dulkes nuo savo vaikystės knygų. Taip gera dalintis su savo mažaisiais ne tik išskirtinėmis istorijomis, kurios laiko patikrintos, bet ir savo prisiminimais. Šnekučiuotis apie tai, ką tau reiškia knygos, kaip jas skaitei. Čia geriausia dovana mūsų mažiesiems. Geros skaitymo ir didelis ačiū leidyklai, kad perleidžia tokius nuostabius kūrinius.

Da ich Ottfried Preußlers Bücher als Kind nie gelsen haben, dachte ich mir, zu Feier des 100-jährigen Jubiläums kann man ja mal anfangen.
Das die Wahl auf Das kleine Gespenst gefallen ist, ist auf das putzige Gespenst und den putzigen Namen 'Herr Schuhu der Uhu' zurückzuführen.
Die Geschichte an sich ist eher kurz (perfekt zum Vorlesen), aber die schönen Zeichnungen machen das Buch auch für Erwachsene zu einem schönen Leseerlebnis!

Ein Klassiker. „Das kleine Gespenst� von Ottfried Preußler hat wohl so einige Kindheiten begleitet und ist immer noch eine schöne Geschichte für Kinder. In dieser Version eingesprochen von Jens Wawrczeck, dessen Stimmfarbe die Geschichte perfekt untermalt. Mit seiner angenehmen Stimme und einer angemessenen Geschwindigkeit kann man der Erzählung gut folgen. Jede Figur bekommt eine andere Stimmlage, dass man die Figuren toll unterscheiden kann und welche ihnen einen eigenen Charakter verleiht.
Inhalt:
Jede Nacht zu Mitternacht wacht das kleine Gespenst auf und dreht seine Runde auf Burg Eulenstein. Dabei besucht es ab und an seinen Freund den Uhu Schuhu, der auch immer des Nachts wach ist. Durch eine Geschichte des Schuhus, träumt das kleine Gespenst davon, einmal die Burg bei Tageslicht zu sehen, obwohl es gegen seine Natur ist. Und ehe es sich versieht, wird dieser Wunsch plötzlich wahr... oh. oh.

Eine total niedliche Geschichte mit tollen Bildern, lässt sich bestimmt auch gut vorlesen...es passt auch super in die Herbst/Halloween Stimmung :)

El pequeño fantasma es un clásico infantil que fue publicado en los 70 y ahora Maeva Young ha recuperado con una edición muy bonita y llamativa. En cartoné, con ilustraciones en blanco y negro que acompañan a la historia y también enmarcan el inicio de cada capitulo.
Hacia bastante que no leí literatura infantil y de vez en cuando me apetece mucho para desconectar de lecturas más densas, este libro ha sido la elección perfecta. Se trata de una historia sencilla, divertida y con enseñanza, que encantara a los más pequeños, además cuenta con un protagonista muy peculiar como es el pequeño fantasma. Resulta una lectura muy ágil y amena que consigue dejarte con una sonrisa al finalizar, así que imagino que si para mí ha sido una lectura muy disfrutable para el público al que va dirigido será aun mejor. ¿Por qué hay algo mejor que conocer las hazañas y desventuras de un fantasma que desea conocer más del mundo que le rodea?

What a wonderful story! It is deserving of its place in the German canon of children’s books. ThT said, I did figure out what had gone wrong, why the night-ghost was a day-ghost, but that hardly matters. The book is quite funny and never scary or creepy, so quite good for any child that can maintain concentration for at least several pages at a time.

Mīlīga pasaka par Eilenšteinas pils mazo melno spoku, kurš bija "viens no tiem miermīlīgajiem nakts spokiem, kuri nevienam nedarīja neko ļaunu, ja vien viņus nekaitināja", bet kurš ļoti gribēja piedzīvot pasauli dienā. Morāle ir diezgan didaktiska - nav prāta darbs izmisīgi censties ko sasniegt, cerot, ka tas padarīs laimību, jo var izrādīties, ka laime slēpjas kur citus - bet darbība gana aizraujoša, ar pakaļdzīšanos, spokošanos un senu kauju izrādēm. Mērķauditorija (6+) atzina par gana labu esam.

Stimmungsvolles Hörspiel des Klassikers. Irgendwie hatte ich die Geschichte ganz anders in Erinnerung - dass die Kinder eine grössere Rolle spielen - aber es hat mir dennoch sehr gut gefallen.

Sehr, sehr süß. Die Bilder, die fast auf jeder Seite zu finden sind, gefallen mir am besten, weil das Gespenst meistens ein possierliches Lächeln hat. Obwohl es ein Kinderbuch ist, wird am Ende natürlich alles gut sein, aber es gibt auch traurige Momente. Man fühlt sich dem Gespenst gegenüber bekümmert. Ich denke, dass das Buch schöne Personen und eine lustige Geschichte hat, und ich mag es wirklich.

A cute children's book translated from German about a little ghost who learns that one should always be careful what they wish for. Large text accompanied with lovely illustrations. The one downfall was the book's weird emphasis on how good it is to be white and how awful it is to be black. Probably was totally innocent and means nothing but it was definitely laughably racist whether intentional or not.

The Little Ghost is a children's book, written by Otfried Preußler in 1966 with illustrations from Franz Josef Tripp. It was published by Thielemann publisher and was translated to 44 languages. It is one of the most famous books of the German children and youth literature. This is pure nostalgia for me. One of my favorites from childhood!

Ein Lese-Muss für jedes Kind, dann wird es auch nie wieder Angst vor harmlosen, kleinen Gespenstern haben.

Ein süßes Kinderbuch mit niedlichen Figuren.
Die hier beschriebenen Charaktere sind wirklich süß, aber es fehlt ein kleines Bisschen, damit das kleine Gespenst genauso liebenswert ist wie die kleine Hexe oder der kleine Wassermann, die in ihrer Beschreibung wirklich besonders waren. Zusammenhängen kann das auch damit, dass die Nebenfiguren, die wirklich sympatisch sind erst sehr spät zu dem kleinen Gespenst stoßen und ihm helfen. Die Abenteuer sind süß beschrieben, wenn auch wneiger moralisch als bei den anderen, bereits erwähnten Kinderbüchern (entschuldigt den Vergleich, aber er bietet sich an.) Das Thema ist eher, was passiert, wenn man zu neugierig ist und sich nicht an Regeln hält, was ich bei der kleinen Hexe viel besser umgesetzt fand. Die Moral hier passt nach meinem Empfinden nicht mehr in die heutige moralische Kindererziehung. Das liegt natürlich auch an der Zeit, in der das Buch geschrieben wurde, war m.E. bei den anderen Büchern aber anders.
Wirklich süß, aber nicht so in den Bann ziehend wie die anderen.
Die hier beschriebenen Charaktere sind wirklich süß, aber es fehlt ein kleines Bisschen, damit das kleine Gespenst genauso liebenswert ist wie die kleine Hexe oder der kleine Wassermann, die in ihrer Beschreibung wirklich besonders waren. Zusammenhängen kann das auch damit, dass die Nebenfiguren, die wirklich sympatisch sind erst sehr spät zu dem kleinen Gespenst stoßen und ihm helfen. Die Abenteuer sind süß beschrieben, wenn auch wneiger moralisch als bei den anderen, bereits erwähnten Kinderbüchern (entschuldigt den Vergleich, aber er bietet sich an.) Das Thema ist eher, was passiert, wenn man zu neugierig ist und sich nicht an Regeln hält, was ich bei der kleinen Hexe viel besser umgesetzt fand. Die Moral hier passt nach meinem Empfinden nicht mehr in die heutige moralische Kindererziehung. Das liegt natürlich auch an der Zeit, in der das Buch geschrieben wurde, war m.E. bei den anderen Büchern aber anders.
Wirklich süß, aber nicht so in den Bann ziehend wie die anderen.

Οκ, είναι λίγο παράξενο να προσθέτω τα ριβιούς των παιδιών :D αλλά γιατί όχι τελικά; Έχουν κι αυτά την άποψή τους. Προσωπικά λάτρεψα τη μικρή μάγισσα και την εικονογράφησή της, αλλά το ίδιο και τα παιδιά. Με τόσο μικρά παιδιά πολλές φορές δεν περιμένω να μου πουν αν τους άρεσε ή όχι ένα βιβλίο, κάθε μέρα διαβάζουμε και το καταλαβαίνω συνήθως από το πόσο ...ακούνε. Όσο περισσότερο τους αρέσει ένα βιβλίο, τόσο πιο προσεκτικά ακούν. Τώρα που το σκέφτομαι κιόλας, είναι εξαιρετικά δύσκολο να καταφέρεις νήπια να σε ακούν ...προσεκτικά για αρκετή ώρα. Οπότε ναι, το παιδικό βιβλίο είναι τρομερά δύσκολο έργο. Αγαπάμε Πρόϊσλερ σίγουρα, αλλά το φάντασμα μάγισσα δεν ήταν. :D

Für eine Hausarbeit zum Thema Resilienz suche ich momentan Kinderbücher mit resilienten Protagonisten. "Das kleine Gespenst" gehört zu den Büchern, die ich mir dazu angucke.
Die Geschichte hat mir unglaublich gut gefallen. Ich habe mit dem kleinen Gespenst mit gefühlt und war in der Geschichte gefangen.
Ich kann mir gut vorstellen, dass ich das Buch bei der Arbeit mit Kindern verwenden und es auch meinen eigenen Kindern vorlesen werde.
Ein wirklich schönes Kinderbuch von Otfried Preußler.
Ich bin hin und weg, weshalb ich auch 5 von 5 Sterne gebe.
