LOL Everyman! Playing the devil's advocate ... Well sometimes my Dad did hold me up to see over the crowds, but I think in this case he just urged me forward, and stood behind me. You can see another child just on the left of me. You can also tell the low viewpoint (and fuzziness) is that of a five year old's - as I then was :) Though of course an adult could take this from a crouching position I guess ... Funny - I remember the occasion very well as I desperately wanted to take a picture of the dog - but I don't remember the details.

I think these little circuses were on their way out by then really, but it seems a direct descendant of some of the acts Dickens describes.
