Back in 1975, three boys are messing around in the street when a car with two men, claiming to be cops, pulls up. The men leave with one of boys, Dave, who goes missing for four days. Although his return is celebrated by his community, his life will never be whole again. Flash forward twenty-five years and the now men, who have not remained close, become embroiled in unspeakable violence.

I actively avoided the movie of Mystic River when it came out a couple of decades ago. I’d heard a whisper that it was about child abduction and abuse and the actively-parenting-me instantly put up barriers. Now that both my children and I are older, I’m feeling bolder about the content I’m willing to tackle. I’ve read and like a few past books by Dennis Lehane. I appreciate his writing. He deals with hard topics without pulling punches but also without the need to show it graphically on the page in his descriptions. He is great at laying out multilayered characters, who are not easy to embrace as a reader, but feel starkly genuine.

The Mystery Guest by Nita Prose
"This was another quick and cozy mystery with its delightful cast of characters and familiar setting.

Molly is a memorable character with her old-fashioned phrases and quirks. In this book, we get to explore a little more of her past and learn a bit about her beloved Gran too. It's an illuminating look at Molly's childhood and I loved the backstory.

While the mystery felt a little less satisfying, it's all about the characters here and that makes up for any plot issues I had.

This light mystery is cozy and fun and has a collection of fantastic characters that you want to continue following along with. I can't wait to see how it all continues and wraps up in book three!

3.5 stars -- Thanks to the publisher Penguin Canada for my gifted copy!"

12-year-old Jo sets off to hike a 100+ mile trail along Lake Superior with her mother. They are both recovering from the desertion of Jo’s dad, when he left them for another family.

The hiking portions made a great story, the 100+ therapy session was pedantic, boring, and annoying. ]]>
