Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld
"the first half was stronger than the second half but even then it went on a bit too much about snl (TNO?) i did really love when they interacted in her workplace and i really wish they didnt do a time jump and just would of fell in love right after working together.

i didnt hate the emails but i didnt like covid being apart of the plot it felt a bit unneccesary and also every time i saw her email name i kept thinking of that nmilz guy on tiktok. if i were a therapist or some relationship coach i would for sure say that she needs to gain confidence before she even goes anywhere near a relationship, i also didnt like that it ended with her on the last page STILL being in disbelief he would be with her but again i get its realistic and in some way i also appreciate that it didnt end with her looking in the mirror suddenly thinking she was a supermodel i liked the realness and relatableness to the characters mindset but sometimes the constant reminders and her ruining the relationship over her 'ugliness' compared to him killlleeeeddd me 😭😭 like zero growth in 300 pagesssss

in terms of social commentary on the way society views women and how that reflects in our self image and percieved worth in relationships with men i really enjoyed the writing on that front, the overall concept was interesting and there was also quite frequent political references (even if she was a bit too libbed out for me like meeting hilary clinton cant be the best day of ur life plsss)

overall enoyable read and could of been more enjoyable if the storyline didnt kinda falter near the end so like 3/5?
(i definetly felt their romantic chemistry but it wasnt on par with some other romance books also in an odd way their relationship went so slow in the beggining and so fast in the end so strange pacing but still cute)"

I loved how this book talked about the importance of community spaces as well as delivering a sweet love story, it was a super refreshing and fun read.
However, the love story did seem to move a bit slowly and it kind of felt fragmented throughout the novel, especially for one marketed as a love story?
I also felt like there wasn't a lot of explanation to why exactly the characters are in love with one another, Tiwa comments on how she thinks Said is attractive but thats about it. I could have been more convinced by the love story if it displayed them both falling back in love with each other a bit better.
Another thing i didnt really enjoy is how conflict is handled in the novel. Every time a character finds out something upsetting they just storm off without hearing an explanation and that sort of reads as lazy writing to me...like if a character is upset surely they want an explanation from the other character as soon as possible?? It just felt like it was there to just create tension for a bit until to conflict is solved in the next 2 chapters. I also didn't really understand Safiyah's reasoning for interfering between Said's and Tiwa's letters? It felt rushed and didnt entirely make sense to me like if she was worried about her brother getting 'attached' to their town, she could have just talked to him?? Instead of destroying his relationship with his best friend?? And then proceeding to lie about it for YEARS? The more i think about it the less it makes sense. Besides, Said and Tiwa forgave her waaay too quickly like it was brushed off so fast! It felt like it was sort of rushed in at the end of the novel so we could get to the happy ending.
