In his book, How Democracies Die, author Steven Levitsky offers a comprehensive assessment of failed democracies and what led to their demise. Levitsky details multiple commonalities among the autocratic leaders who wrested control over previously democratic governments and examines how President Trump's actions and demeanor resembles those of historical and present-day autocrats and dictators. The unsettling aspect of the book is that it was written during President Trump's first term in office. Many of the democratically elected leaders referenced in the book seized control in the midst of a national crisis--real or manufactured. It is chilling to imagine our country dealing with some imagined "crisis" in 2028 which Trump will use as justification to remain in power. Let's hope our democracy can survive this all-too-real threat. ]]>
