The Jackal's Mistress by Chris Bohjalian
"3.5 - Nicely written story inspired by true events of a Southern confederate woman nursing a Northern soldier back to health after finding him close to death during the civil war. Well developed characters, some adventures, and historical info was woven throughout. Fairly simple straight forward story telling with a message and a decent ending."

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
"On my second read (years after the first), I upped my rating from 4 to 5 stars. Not sure what explains the increase, but it could be that reading Huckleberry Finn shortly after reading James put me in the “zone of the times and the language. The conversations, particularly among Tom, Huckleberry, and Jim, struck me as hysterically funny, and Jim struck me as especially wise.

My copy of the book had illustrations that added to the humor.

My copy also had an explanatory note from Twain about the mixture of dialects (Missouri negro, backwoods, “town, and such). Twain says that the dialect might appear haphazard but was in fact painstakingly applied. He adds: “I make this explanation because without it many readers would suppose that all these characters were trying to talk alike and not succeeding. That one sentence speaks volumes about Twain. He is a brilliant mix of author, historian, and humorist. "

4.3. A very interesting historical novel about Cardinal Wolsey, of fame during the Henry VIII area and probably best known for his attempts to annul the marriage of Katherine of Aragon and Henry VIII, although he also was a confidant and highly placed at the pinnacle of power during the early parts of Henry’s reign. A very different and fresh perspective on the Cardinal, from his humble upbringing as a tradesman’s son, to highly intelligent scholar and priest, to rising to the highest strata of the Tudor dynasty as a trusted advisor to Henry VII, and then his randy but seemingly intelligent son, Henry VIII. An extremely well researched tome on the rise and fall of Cardinal Wolsey, not only from his professional pursuits but also his personal life, including his ambition and ruthless pursuit of power to his “family life. Although focused on Cardinal Wolsey, this novel also is an excellent book on the political events of the time A long book but I could not put it down Thank you to Netgalley for providing me an advance copy in exchange for an unbiased and candid review. ]]>

4.2 Chris Bohjalian has returned with a gripping and very interesting historical fiction inspired by true events of a Union captain from Vermont, Jonathan Weybridge, who is left to fend for himself or die from wounds near Berryville, Virginia (not far from Harper Ferry) and is surreptitiously taken in by a Southern woman, Libby Steadman, along with two freedmen, a husband and wife, and her young niece; her husband, a confederate captain, was captured but his whereabouts are unknown. I have found Mr. Bohjalian’s recent books not on the level of his very earlier ones and a little on the weird side, but this one was beautifully written and captivating, and is more like his earliest novels. Both Libby and Jonathan deal with the separations from their spouses and families due to the war, but the story also focuses on Libby’s strengths, morality, and compassion, among other things to help Captain Weybridge, who also is facing his challenges physically and emotionally. Libby says she is providing Captain Weybridge (the Jackal) with the same care that she would hope a Union wife would provide to her husband. Even though both are on opposite spectrums politically, the story also exemplifies their similarities, on moral and psychological grounds as well, as well as the challenges they faced together and separately. It is a story of enormous risk taking, for Libby, her freedmen, and her niece while also showing the humanity they provide to this situation. Excellent character development and great story. ]]>

The Fisherman's Gift by Julia R. Kelly
"4.5 This is beautiful writing and beautiful storytelling. Know ahead it is very slow moving until the end when secrets are revealed. The misunderstandings and grief the characters experienced devastated me, it was often very hard for me to read. Very atmospheric and extreme in depth character development. I feel wiped after reading this."

4.3. An incredible, riveting and beautiful story. A historical fiction that focuses on three Libyan friends living in exile London and their friendship over 30 years (the 1980s to the Arab Spring in the 2000s) from students to adults surviving many obstacles and challenges. Beautifully written. As one who loves historical fiction, this also was an interesting story of the struggles of Libyans, especially those considered against the Qaddafi regime, parts of which I was totally unaware. The novel focuses on exile, innocence, grief, friendship (familial and collegial) through thick and thin, relationships, loss and violence. ]]>
