I'm giving this five stars because like the rest of the Flashman series, this book is utterly, patently absurd, over the top, completely anachronistic, and a lot of fun.

If you're a history buff, there's some fun nuggets of historical trivia scattered throughout; George MacDonald Fraser obviously did his research. It's also incredibly racist, sexist, jingoistic, and generally in-your-face ridiculous. The protagonist is such an excessively offensive caricature that I could never tell whether it was supposed to be satire or serious - much of the time while reading this, my reactions were something along the lines of "...dude, no" before laughing out loud. Just turn off your brain and go with the flow.
