If you need a love poem with an unusual (though true) ring to it, it comes from Haarhoff's pen:

Love's String
the kite flies free
in the heavens.
in bucks, dives, bobs,
swallow swoops, eagle soars
rides sideways on still wings.
the kite's sure flight depends
on the tug of a string
_______________

At the time the string was in the hand of the artist who was still in awe of the lady this book was dedicated to. So delicate and true.

Looking back means looking here, you will discover more about Haarhoff and his images: ]]>

Not all the illustrations in the book are accompanied by a Bible verse, those that are, are the ones closest to my heart. I find it encouraging to colour the images and while you're doing so, you're repeating the verse beside it to yourself until it's embedded in your mind. Memorizing the Bible and its contents is becoming more and more important as time goes on.

What I really enjoy about this children's atlas is that it not only shows you maps and photos of the places described, there is the occasional and coin of the country as well. This aspect is probably what drew me to it in the first place. The book cleverly combines sophistication with simplicity by explaining what it sets out to do in the beginning: Keys and symbols are neatly laid out. Full-colour illustrations make it more attractive and I know that I would've read this cover to cover if I'd have picked it up during my childhood. ]]>

I came across this book at a charity shop and then the translated version called Posseëls van die hele wêreld. It's a very good attempt at laying the world of philately at the feet of a young reader, with good explanations and examples of FDCs, maxi-cards, etc. Full-colour images (with stamps a third of the size of the real McCoy) accompany a few examples of definitive and commemorative stamps. The reader is shown where in the world the country is and since it was published in 1981, the stamps are dated. It makes for an interesting and informative read and links in quite nicely with my book: Map Cards for Africa, though the stamps discussed in the latter are mainly South African (and Namibian). ]]>

Who knew that a book this long could keep me occupied for it's entire 400+ pages?
The Dreyfus affair, 18941899, is filled with French names (that I eventually remembered simply because they were repeated so often) and after a very long introduction, one court case after the next. Monsieur Picquard is most certainly a "Gentleman" which, for some reason or another I thought was the title of the book! "A Gentleman and a Spy", but spying is something he only ends up dabbling in because he'd been seconded there by Mercier in 1895. After that he simply learns by trial and error and is actually a captive of the entire situation which he refuses to let go. If it wasn't for his dogged insistence on pointing out the true traitors of France, he would've been a "free man", but with a heavy conscience.
I'm not sure why I eventually finished reading the book. Perhaps it was because I wanted to find out if there's any justice in the end. It certainly wasn't because the book was all that "exciting", or that I felt "driven" to get to the last page.
It was merely something to do ... which (I'm guessing), it ended up being for Picquard too. ]]>
