Sometimes frustrating to read (rather sloppy editing in places, i thought) and didn't do much to win me over to reading the rest of the series, but there were moments which were enjoyable - I particularly want to give props to the author for writing what so many Canadians secretly and semi-traitorously wonder about the cult of Leonard Cohen - "What could a young, vibrant, angst-free creature find in music whose sole purpose, it seemed to Jejenue, was to take away your will to live?"

There were some other nice lines as well. If I'm stranded somewhere and all I have to read is another Steve Burrows, I wouldn't be too upset.

P.S. - What the heck is a GM project?? ]]>

A Siege of Bitterns by Steve Burrows
"3.5 Stars. I’ve been mulling over A Siege of Bitterns (great title), by Steve Burrows, for a few days now. The premise of setting a mystery in a Norfolk marshland with its plethora of birders was good. As was the mix of motives from wind farms to possible toxic spills and animosity between business minded folks and champions of nature. I also enjoyed a number of the characters. But the moody, albeit talented, bird watching enthusiast, Inspector Domenic Jejeune just didn’t impress me much. His back story (something about his brother...) and the reason he moved from Canada to Britain wasn’t fleshed out and neither was his previous case which propelled his career forward. I kept thinking, “perk up lad, adopt a bit of gratitude!
I might dip into the next in the series though as I found the birding aspect quite informative and maybe more about Jejeune will be revealed. "

Dreadnought by Cherie Priest
" (Received my ARC via Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ)

It's all about the journey, not the destination, in Priest's third entry in The Clockwork Universe. A journey undertaken via airship, steamship and the eponymous Dreadnought, a monstrous Union war train carry more guns than the Texas chapter of the NRA. It's a journey with more than its fair share of bumps along the way, true, but it's also a very linear one.

Throughout the voyage battles are fought, unsurprising mysteries revealed, rebel raiders repelled, numerous secondary characters with hazy motivations encountered, and a horde of zombie heroically disposed of. Because what's a steampunk tale without a healthy dose of zombies? Don't worry, we're sure the werewolves will appear next issue.

And throughout all these varied tribulations protagonist Vinita "Mercy" Lynch remains as steady and unflappable as bedrock. Nothing much seems to truly shock the recently widowed Mrs. Lynch, which, unfortunately, means nothing much truly shocks you.

Still, it's entertaining enough. Three-and-a-half stars out of five."

This was fun, just about perfect for a Christmas-time read. Very fast paced, it keeps the action cranked so that you barely notice some of it's flaws (it's not high literature, some of the world-building does not make a lot of sense to me, and I definitely did not keep track of all the names and characters thrown in at various times, plus, did we really need ____'s?) I'm pleased to find that after reading Boneshaker several years ago, Dreadnought matched my expectations of a good time, and I think it could stand alone if necessary. I appreciated this. Might pick up book three in another few years, or perhaps I should turn reading a book from this series into a Christmas-time habit?

Note: It does not have anything to do with Christmas, really, it's just a fun read. ]]>

I read about half of this collection of short stories, set on Vancouver Island and the coast. They seem nice. But also in a bit of an older style - I wonder if this collection is drawn from a prolonged period of work? Some of the stories seem to be set in a time previous to the new millennium. There's nothing wrong with that, but I was looking for more current stories -perhaps also looking for something a little less mainstream Canadiana nice. I did like the line about Victoria being filled with refugees from Winnipeg, that truism made me smile. ]]>
