It’s just the best basketball book I’ve ever read. It’s the kind of book where a chapter will take you 40 minutes to read because you’ll constantly be looking up clips of the plays mentioned or snapping pictures of passages to text to your friends. I was sad when it ended. I don’t think this book works as a novel. But as an unvarnished glimpse into Baldwin’s thoughts on race and gender? I think it does that expertly. It’s hard not to believe the thoughts these characters had were things Baldwin had thought.
