"Sexist & indulgent. I tried so hard to enjoy this book after so many positive reviews but it is so, so sexist and racist that it distracted from the plot. It was a struggle to make it through all 1100 pages. Glad to be done."

"Never have I read a book which is so long where so little happens. The protagonist's agency amounts to things happening to him an dus, the reader, being told how amazing he is (without seeing any of it). I got 900/1,100 pages into this book before I simply gave up. I loved Shogun, but this book was a lot less interesting than that one.

The 1 star is not simply because I was bored, but also because of the rampant sexism and racism throughout the book, especially the sexism. It becomes really hard to read, and the author positions the archaic implicit rules of HK society as a good thing. Or atleast one that women shouldn't be complaining about as much. Couldn't stop rolling my eyes throughout the entire read. I'm not sure the Chinese would be too happy with their depiction in this book either.

If the book wasn't so long, I probably could've finished it. However, considering nothing happens after 900 pages, I feel like I gave this book more than enough chances to win me over. A real shame as Shogun is one of my favourite books. I hope Taipan is better."

"This is my first time writing a review on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. Usually I don't bother, but I felt I had to this time.

I really loved James Clavell's other Asian Saga books. Taipan was fantastic - 5 stars. But I got 260 pages into Noble House and just couldn't go on! So far it's just been boring business talk (stock markets, company takeovers) and huuuuugely sexist characters. Every time Casey is mentioned the other characters talk about sleeping with her or how fantastic her breasts are. I really couldn't take it anymore. It's just too over the top and distracts from whatever plot/character development the author is trying to advance.

I'm so disappointed - I really wanted to enjoy this book as I've enjoyed Clavell's other works, but sadly that's not meant to be. At least I'll always have Taipan..."

"Big let down in the annual tradition of reading a James Clavell book. Hong Kong of the 1960s is hardly as interesting as the one in Tai Pan or Japan in Shogun. Rather than being a great story layered with rich historical undercurrents, this book is a weird mix of glorified post-colonial gentry, pseudo feminism and cringe-worthy romance writing. The fact that this book is a 1400 page monster with several unfulfilled arcs and at least 20 pointless characters with elaborate backstories makes me angrier."
