I really wanted to line this one, given how much I loved the first two books of the series, but unfortunately this second duology fell flat for me.

The premise and the plot were intriguing, and had so much potential, but this story is dragged down by its lack of character growth/depth and relationship development. It feels as if the characters make personality altering changes very quickly, without much detail or attention. I feel more time should’ve been spent in this area, as it would’ve made this book spectacular. This is especially true when it comes to Zarrah. I wish we’d had more time to see her grow on her own as a character. She spends so much time at the whims of others that I feel she needed time on her own to come to terms with her trauma and find herself as a person. However, Keris was always there, which didn’t truly allow her to make room for herself. I had many gripes with his character in this book, which is disappointing after how much I loved him in the previous book. He is overall very self serving in this book, but never seems to really learn and grow from his hubris. Originally he had more redeeming qualities that made his hubris less significant, but he loses those qualities in this second addition. I wish we’d had more time to see glimpses of how he was in the prior installment, as I was not a fan of his actions or personality.

This book also suffered from a heavy case of telling and no showing. I really wish that instead of telling us how the characters felt and using it to rush their development, that we’d had more time to see them deal with their gripes. That’s really what this book felt like it was missing, and would have added much more depth to what could have been a very nuanced book.

I will continue with the series since we’ll have new protagonists, but it definitely will be a while before I do so!

(p.s. why did Lara have more development and depth in her one bonus chapter than the other characters had in the rest of the book?)
