A little inconsistent in pacing and scope, it’s a novel that could have proven more powerful as a novelette with its themes (opt out, rise up, love boldly) dealt out like playing cards for a hand of poker than a round of solitaire. The epistolary elements (meeting notes for the prison-that-is-not-technically-a-prison staff meetings, internet excursions regarding minor characters) give the world more depth, but we’re already despairing so they do little beyond the expected. Provides a few peeks behind the curtain of an individual whose genius should continue to be celebrated.

Delicate balance between standard diary and poignant memoirs. Rickman (while reading the diaries of another artist) questions his own use of his itinerant logs, so in some ways the editing here harmonizes with this curiosity.
