The fact that so many people died in the Soviet space program isn't that amazing. What is amazing is that they all didn't die. ]]>

Good list. Seen all but We Are All Murderers and It Happened at the Inn. There are dozens more that should be on the list especially from the 60's and 70s. ]]>

"This is a strange one. I really loved her previous book, A Children's Bible, so was very much looking forward to this. Because Children's Bible took a bit to settle in to the primary story, I wasn't concerned that this was also a slow starter. Unfortunately this time the story never really took off. I do not need propulsive plot in all my fiction, but honestly Dinosaurs is extreme in its languorous, meandering, low-key vibe. I probably could have gone with that, though, if it weren't for the increasing use of sentence fragments, which made it an excruciating reading experience by the end of the book. I just. Do not. Understand. Why so. Many. Writers. Do this now. OH. MY. GOD. JUST. FINISH. A. FREAKING. SENTENCE. Please & thank you."

Dinosaurs by Lydia Millet
"This man has so much money, he refuses to have a job because someone needs it more than he does. That's just the kind of guy Gil is.

One day his 15 year relationship ends with a note left on the counter. So he decides to buy a house in Arizona and to walk there, from New York.
He has to dig really deep to figure out why his ambitious, hardworking girlfriend decided to leave him after 15 years of his doing absolutely nothing with his life.

After moving in, he settles into his new occupation: staring off into the vast desert; contemplating the mysteries of environmental catastrophe, disappearing birds, insects. His oil baron inheritance, which came at a complete shock to him at 18 (he's an orphan, of course!), is a heavy yoke around his shoulders. He's chained by the knowledge that the freedom wealth delivers you isn't as good as poor people imagine.

Nobody knows how he suffers. Luckily, he bears it with grace and makes some friends along the way while pondering the infinite nature of the universe. He quickly solves his guilt problem by becoming a neighborhood cop to catch the bad guy shooting birds, volunteering at a women's shelter, and teaching the kid next door how to skateboard.

Heartwarming!"
