A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher
"You get what you paid for, is what I can say about this book. You ask for a cutesy little book about a sorceress coming to call, you get a sorceress coming to call.

Cordelia realized years ago there's something unnatural about her mother and her horse. The townspeople don't say anything about it explicitly, but it's been ages since Cordelia has interacted with anyone other than her mother and the occasional ride with her neighbor Ellen. Suddenly when Cordelia's mother is rejected by her benefactor and quickly finds another potential wealthy suitor by the coast, she expects Cordelia to be the most graceful and charmed of young debutantes to establish herself in society.

On the other side of the coin, shelved spinster Hester Chatham wakes up in cold dread in the middle of the night. Something terrible is coming, and she can feel it in her bones.

Fairly predictable, no unexpected corners anywhere. I had a suspicion that maybe the enchanted horse Falada (view spoiler) but alas it's just another run-of-the-mill magical beastie (view spoiler).

Cordelia and Hester are victims of domestic abuse. Hester was lucky enough to escape (view spoiler) and the book does a very weak job of trying to establish Hester's motivation to help Cordelia as surrogate-mother-like or recognizing herself if she was younger. Cordelia's an abused child living with a narcissistic mother, and we don't need any extra motivation to figure out what Cordelia's going to try to do for the rest of the book.

There's not a good establishment of sorcery or magic, just whatever the characters are able to scrounge up with fairy tales, so in that respect it's almost kind of like a classic monster hunter vibe, where a party of heroes are holed up somewhere researching various folklore to find any sort of clue to do...well...anything.

Was this book aiming for Gothic vibe, with a lonely bachelor and a spinster? Because it failed. Gothic things should be cold and ominous and a little scary. Instead, for poor Cordelia, it's the nicest place she's ever been. Also, how short-sighted and narcissistic is the mother to not realize that without any frame of reference for this high society she wants to join, (view spoiler). All in all, feels kind of insulting.

It's a short easy book to get through and I no matter how lukewarm and indifferent I am to it, I can at least admit there aren't that many glaring potholes that don't stem from lack of magic structure establishment."

Emily’s worst romance but possibly best plot!!! I said what I said!

04/24 review

Changing this to a 3.5/5 rating after sitting with it for a bit. I have to respect Henry simultaneously staying in her bounds of writing characters involved in literature while also trying something “new- I wish we had dug more into the world of journalism and the FMCs prior projects/works, as clearly the romance was not the show runner here.

Which brings us to the point of what the fuck was that. Not only was the relationship with Theo convoluted, almost unnecessary, and felt shoe horned in the entire time but also Hayden. Who felt like he was a cardboard cut out when brought into Alice’s orbit but was actually an incredible character outside of it. Not to mention how he loses even more merit when the big plot reveal comes in. I wish we had seen the story from his perspective. Seen how his view of love unfolds, because it IS way too sudden in my personal opinion, based on Alice’s worldview and personality alone. It’s giving manic pixie girl adoration, and I feel like it’s WAY more than that, and it’s a disservice to just. Write him like that.

I love Margaret’s past and wish we had seen more of her relationship with Cosmo as a parallel to Alice and Hayden. That’s originally why I gave this a four. Like. Ives deep past aside (felt more like padding than anything)- I wish we had seen Margaret in Nashville (I say this because I now live there! And I think it could’ve been fun to explore the dichotomy between current day Nash and past Nash as well as the 3 hour difference and beauty between TN and GA)

I just wish this hadn’t been a romance or had any nsfw in it because it could’ve been a lot more outside of it. How do you like DEM apples???? ]]>

Whoof, what started out as an incredible journey just got a lil too long in the tooth for me. I don't know if I have the time or spoons for the final book in the series, if I'm being completely honest. Just peeking over at some reviews, it seems to be a lot. And kudos to Lee. She does do a good job of keeping things relevant. Of keeping us abreast of who all these characters are. I just wish it hadn't been a trilogy.

This book made me like Anden more. I just also don't think I could see any harm come to Hilo. I love him too much. So this may be the last book for me, especially if the price stays as high as it is where I've been looking online... :( ]]>
