Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins
"i don鈥檛 think anything i could ever write will ever do this book justice or express how much it affected me. suzanne collins has done it again, but this time i believe with even more power and meaning. sunrise on the reaping has given me a whole new perspective on every event in the hunger games series. she truly captures the brutality of the capitol and describes how they will stop at nothing to punish and rip apart the districts. i think this is so important because it has become too easy for readers to sympathize with snow or make excuses for the capitol, which truthfully reflects our society at this time. the biggest threat to the capitol is the district citizens and they make this abundantly clear.

collins made the deaths and area the most brutal in this book for a reason. she exemplifies the lasting trauma the hunger games causes on children and depicts how the capitol truly doesn鈥檛 care about the cold blooded murder of each child. this provided a new perspective that i feel is often lost in the other books because you are so focused on katniss and peeta that you don鈥檛 think about the other kids in the same situation. also, her depiction of the capitol giving haymitch hope and quickly ripping it away every time was tear-jerking. they completely broke him.

additionally, i am SO glad we got to see another covey girl in district 12. their story is so fascinating to me and i absolutely love how they are portrayed as the sparks of the revolution. lucy gray鈥檚 impact is not lost on the districts even though you don鈥檛 truly know what happened to her (which i think is such a good ending to her story too). each covey girl and every rebel were working towards something that katniss accomplished, which is so emotional because the deaths and lasting trauma finally came to fruition.

don鈥檛 even get me STARTED on that epilogue. haymitch鈥檚 attitude towards katniss finally makes sense and i am so happy i have a new understanding of his character. haymitch represents what can happen to a wonderful, kind person when they are put through the capitol鈥檚 torture. even though he is still the same character, he is forever damaged.

i know what i am saying is not monumental and has been said before, but i need to put some of it into words. this book is so relevant in our world today but it also provides the necessary context for the rest of the series. it depicts how easily we can fall to propaganda (and how we already have with haymitch鈥檚 games!) there are so many other emotions i can鈥檛 even express because god i loved this book so much.

鈥渢hey will not use my tears for their entertainment.鈥"
