bookshelves: stories
this collection definitely picked up for me in the second half, but i did find myself wondering what all the hype was about toward the beginning. i enjoyed babitz’s writing style, and her ability to transport you to the setting through her use of sensory words was amazing. her voice is sharp, and i love how much of babitz and her personality you can glean through her writing.

that being said, i feel as though this wasn’t the best starting point for her writing, and i think i should have maybe started with one of her other works in order to appreciate this one more. and as fascinating as it was to read about LA (a place i’ve never been before) during decades i wasn’t even alive for, i found myself realizing that i don’t really care about LA or it’s social circles, culture, and all its happenings. i’m not sure what changed for me in the second half of the book—if these were ordered chronologically and her writing got stronger later in her career, or just sheer personal preference, or coincidence. this book is certainly a testament to a city cleared loved by babitz, and her love/hate relationship with it was insightful to read, but personally i just don’t really vibe with the subject matter, and found there to be better footing in the stories that were grounded in something outside of the city—friendships, relationships, social commentary, an experience with a specific person, etc.

standouts:
* free tibet
* weird august
* coco
* black swans ]]>
