His Juliet by Emilia Rossi
"I was so excited for this book because I *loved* His Tesoro. I've slowly been getting back to my mafia romance era, and I'm obsessed. This was very good!

Romeo and Juliet were such a sweet and hot couple. This book had the perfect mix of banter, emotions, healing, romance and just ✨️vibes✨️. His Juliet had me crying, laughing and just enjoying the ride. Could not put it down. Adored.

Loved seeing all the characters from His Tesoro and am already so eager for the next one in the series!

Whilst I think Emilia is amazing at writing disability and mental health rep, and getting the emotional aspects 100% right, I found this again quite predictable, same as with His Tesoro. Apart from one plot twist, which was fun. But since I could see the twists and turns coming before they happened, it did bring my enjoyment down a notch.

But, that said, I did really enjoy this book a whole lot!

Read this if you like:
🖤 Mafia Romance
🖤 great hurt/comfort
🖤 mental health rep (check your triggers!)
🖤 age gap
🖤 morally grey MMC
🖤 curvy FMC

Big thanks to Emilia Rossi for the ARC!"

TW - ableism / chronic Illness (omegas are predisposed to chronic conditions and the world treats them as lesser for this), panic attack, anxiety, alcohol consumption, biphobia + homophobia + anti-polyamory (scs incl family), blood, body shaming, emotional abuse, sex shaming, fatphobia, eating disorder (past, incl unsupportive family), religious bigotry (family), stalking and tracking, kidnapping, use of medical equipment (incl sharp objects, cutting, blood), toxic relationship, parental abandonment, abortion + pregnancy (discussions of the right to choose, sc mentioned as being pregnant), domestic abuse of a sc (recounted incl marriage at 17y/o, resulting in trauma for a MMC), emergency hysterectomy (past, sc, mentioned incl near death experience), drugging of the FMC, gun violence, murder, misogyny, sexism, nausea, verbal abuse (from family), threat of birth control tampering from a sc, going no contact with parents

CW - DP, DVP, voyeurism, exhibitionism, fisting, biting, spanking, toys, light degradation, edging, hand necklace

Tropes - possessive, omegaverse, rich MMCs, author FMC, fated mates, why choose

Representation -polyam - MMMMF

Unfortunately, I found this book to be... boring. See sporadic thoughts below

❗️"One alpha, one beta, one omega how it should be, how it should always be." This is a weird thing to say when you're in a MMMMF / AAABO pack...

❗️The smut was good. Like it wasn't boring. But all the build up to the heat in book 1 kinda feels meh because, for a contemporary omegaverse, an omega going into heat isn’t a major plot development it’s just a fact of life, there is only so much build up you can do before it becomes annoying.

❗️I felt like the established relationships in the pack before the addition of the FMC were being diminished and it really pisses me off when this happens in a why choose. Seth (MMC) and Bennett (MMC) are BONDED - how does saying This house wasn’t a home until she moved in. June being here has brought a different kind of light and joy to the house. Sometimes I wonder how the four of us existed before her. Sure, Seth and I have a sincere love for each other, but oftentimes it felt like we were just roommates with Arin and Theo. Four people, each with separate lives that occasionally crossed paths for dinners or the rare moment we all happened to be home together. even make sense given that context? The four of them were a pack before her???? This irritated me.

❗️Seth saying he wishes he was an alpha so he could bite her and everyone would know she’s his is strange to me because his whole brand is that he’s the unwavering beta

❗️June (FMC) and Theo (MMC) are night and day with the last book. I would’ve liked to see the character development go gradually to actually see them talking more and putting the work in more than the one conversation, the sex and the new room. It felt very abrupt to me.

❗️June's messages from her mum no longer being muted is weird and a flimsy plot line that could’ve easily been rectified by the mum texting from a different number. Her subsequently only wanting Arin’s (MMC) bond right then so she’s not taken away makes me sad for him. It felt like, to me, June was just wanting to use him to get out of her own shitty situation; I was glad he denied her that.

❗️Seth still having significant secrets about his life at the 80% mark of book 2 is weird and I laughed when we found out about what his past entailed because, get real.

❗️The conflict was weird and, again, flimsy, because the stalker aspect I don't feel like was built up enough nor was it on page enough for it to be convincing. There were a few other avenues for the presence of a stalker that I thought would have made so much more sense - the alpha June's parents wanted her to meet or even Seth's cousin would have made more sense and would have been more interesting than what we got.

❗️The pack felt disjointed - it was giving more MMFMM than MMMMF

❗️This was meant to be diverse but the MMCs aren’t described enough, if at all, so for Bennett to be Black, Arin to be Indian and Seth to be Jewish made no difference to the outcome of this book. Arin being Indian was mentioned by one of his siblings. I knew Seth was Jewish because it’s on her insta and maybe mentioned in passing in book 2. It probably wasn't the intention, but it felt like it was thrown in as token diversity.

I... did not like this. Sporadic thoughts below:

❗️By 10% in, I was not sold on this book. It felt very discombobulating and like a huge dump of information not helped by the short and choppy sentence structure. It kind of felt like Evie's (FMC) ramblings in a diary and IF it was that, then I’d have no qualms about the way this is written.

❗️The timeline confused me a bit -Evie got to town before she gave birth. Her twins are currently old enough to be in some sort of school and play outside / go to the neighbours unattended but it’s only now these interactions with Maddox (MMC), her neighbour, are happening? Why now? What prompted this? He's been back in the town for a year now.

❗️I wouldn’t say this is a dark romance. Don’t get me wrong, Evie's past is dark and fucked but nothing about these characters nor their relationship is dark.

❗️Maddox lost his daughter in a car accident. I’m genuinely not sure if Evie was being obtuse or not but I was confused about why she was confused that he had such a visceral reaction about them making sure they had their seatbelts on before driving like she doesn’t know his past.

❗️Maddox' random spurts of jealousy as deflection was weird to me, especially when the guy in question is his brother and he already commented that Mercy has always been like that.

❗️The TW/CW included in the book is... poorly written, imo.

❗️The MCs had no chemistry.

❗️This isn't grumpy x sunshine. He's grumpy, sure, but I wouldn't say she's sunshine.

❗️The MMC uses one of her very specific trauma / trigger points when he's mad about something. It was uncalled for and dumb and she forgave him far too easily. There's a comment on his grovelling but said grovelling was definitely not in the room with us.

❗️Said scene mentioned above was dumb imo because it’s so left field and feels like this scene was just plopped in out of nowhere. It’s his dead daughter’s birthday and he wanted to be alone IT DOES NOT justify what he did but I do think there is an imbalance in the way their trauma is being displayed as there is a clear bias towards the FMC throughout the book. Often, the MMC's trauma is brushed aside and I felt like he was made to feel like he just needs to deal with it / get over it. The same grace that was offered to the Evie was not there for Maddox.

❗️There were a few continuity errors but I can't comment on whether this was updated in the published version.

❗️Maddox has an upcoming fight mentioned in Chapter 8 - we barely hear about him fighting or any of his fights after this point. Considering the original cover literally had boxing gloves on it, I found this weird.

❗️The conflict (from outside forces) was flimsy for me. What do you mean Joe (sc) didn't have working cameras as their workplace because she didn't think it was necessary? She employs vulnerable women????? bsffr rn please

I’m only twenty-six, and I feel like I’m a fifty-year-old parent with dependents who rely on me. I’m single. I should be having the time of my life. But I’m not. I’m realizing I don’t know who I am when fifty percent of my identity has been stripped away. Easton and Lachie are adults. They don’t need me. Knox doesn’t need me. No one does, and it sucks. Because I like being needed. It’s a drug.

This book is truly for the eldest sibling or the sibling that has become the person the entire family relies on; we see that so clearly through Connor's (MMC) character. After Forbidden Puckboy, Connor has had to come to terms with the fact that his brothers are adults now and he doesn't need him mother hen-ing over them in such an overbearing way. He's had to find who he is as his own person and not the person that his family came to rely on growing up.

Parker (MMC) is the new owner of Connor's team and initially sought out to make Connor's life miserable due to interactions they had had in high school but, things go in a different direction for them both. Connor finds himself, with Parker's help, but Parker also gets the domesticity of the Kiki's and Knox in a way he has never had before and I also thought those scenes were cute.

The only thing that stopped this from getting a 5 was that I wanted to see the MCs out in the public and what Connor decided to do with his future. An epilogue would’ve done wonders to bolster the ending.

Tropes - slow burn, unrequited (?) love, road trip, he falls first and harder, bucket list, insta lust / insta connection, one night stand to more, rich MMC, strangers to friends to lovers, skinny dipping, best friend's brother, forced proximity, one bed

Representation - FMC with Kawasaki disease, FMC work an ICD implant, MMC with ADHD, plus size FMC, dad bod MMC, queer scs

I enjoyed this book and I can’t imagine how much of herself Kayla put into this book as we get to meet Jesse (FMC), who has Kawasaki disease, and Ash (MMC) who has ADHD. Despite these things, Kayla gives us two MCs who make the most out of what they have. Ash has done very well for himself and Jesse is taking the steps to live her life to the fullest and have no regrets because of the increased state of uncertainty surrounding her life at the hands of her disease.

Ash was so down bad for Jesse, it was sweet. I enjoyed seeing them get to know each other and become friends after their one night stand. Finding out that Ash is Jesse’s best friend’s brother was amusing because Jesse was the only one concerned about it. It was SO refreshing to have a sibling onboard with their best friend and sibling hooking up without acting like the world would implode.

All in all, this was an enjoyable read.

Scythe & Sparrow by Brynne Weaver
"I think my final consensus on this series is that you should totally read the first book…and then maybe just stop there 😅 A low three stars for this installment and easily the lowest in the series.

This was…fine. Ish. I guess. There’s really not much to it, it doesn’t hit the killer vibes of the previous two books at all (she’s actually REALLY bad at it in ways that genuinely ruin the MMCs life???), and my god this book just would not END. The 75% mark should have been the ending, in my opinion. It’s neat and concise and a great place to wrap things up, but then the book continues on for more than 3 more HOURS (audiobook) to toss in unnecessary and predictable tropes and drag and drag and drag it’s way to an ending that just leaves you tapping your feet waiting for it to stop.

I was reading this with a friend and I’m dead serious he thought the Time Remaining was glitched when it said there was an hour and a half still to go because there was simply no way we still had AN HOUR AND A HALF left?? It was not glitched.

Brynne Weaver is really good at writing romantic and sexual tension and she excels at it here as well. Her ability to take non-erotic acts and write them erotically is one of my favorite things about her work and it shines here. The insulated relationship of these two characters is the shining point of the story, but unfortunately this wasn’t one where that’s enough to prop up the entire book. It’s unfortunately failed by the everything around that.

And now, please enjoy a random sampling of the text messages I was sending in my buddy read after the 75% mark (where I felt the book should have ended).
(no spoilers):

There’s no reason to stretch this out another 3 hours, this should have just ended here with [redacted for spoilers]

2 and a half hours left. Great. Time for the MOST ANNOYING trope.

Okay I guess we’re doing that now…what are we doing

What’s going on for the next 2 hours?

Why is it taking SO LONG?

It’s not a coincidence that the first book is the best one and also the shortest

[image of time remaining showing an hour and a half] How

[a reply to the previous image] How has it only been 15 minutes since this?

I wonder if there’s some like author interview or something at the end bc how is it possible there’s another hour of this? (Note: there is not, lmao)

The rating has been steadily going down for the last two hours

What the fuck are we doing just END THE BOOK
