Insightful and eloquent, Woolf’s essay broadly discusses “women and fiction, from men’s literary portrayals of women to subject matter found in women’s fiction, and from women’s prose to the careers of early female writers. Most importantly, Woolf advances that for a tradition of women’s fiction to develop, women authors require “a room of one’s own and five hundred pounds, alluding to the financial and intellectual independence that are necessary for free, open writing. Good writing thus depends on material factors.

The highlight for me was the section which focused on pioneer women authors and how their works relate. We owe so much to Aphra Behn. ]]>

From what I recall I’d say it was definitely historically-based, and in my opinion a foundational text. The whole book consists of case study after case study of the inextricable relationship between the development of capitalism and the rise, transformation, and fall of the slave trade. Though rooted in history, it is a “liberal myth buster - many political economic concepts can be gleaned from it. Would definitely recommend!! ]]>
