bookshelves: read-with-daughter, fiction
My daughter got this as a birthday gift and loved it, and after telling me the tenth fact about jellyfish, convinced me to read it too. I agree with my daughter's assessment -- a really good book. It covers grief, mental illness, divorce, growing up, and a lot of other tricky things in a compelling, compassionate manner. ]]>

bookshelves: fiction
A pretty stunning book, one of the most memorable protagonists I've read. Ranks right up there with the protagonist from A Confederacy of Dunces, but even better portrayed I think (or perhaps I've matured since I've read that, it's been a while). A great dive into characters and places (although honestly the city itself is almost a character here), with a great plot to go along with it. It took me a while to read, and I'm not certain why -- the writing is heavy, but there's enough action to keep things flowing well. ]]>

A full novel following several novellas, it mostly holds up to full book firm but did lag a bit in the middle. But the world building continues during and the character development gets into full effect here. ]]>
