I mostly liked this book because I found it relatable, and it was quick enough to read. The pacing was odd because 2/3rds of the book focused on her childhood dynamics in Corona, and the last bit was about her lesbian rendezvous w/ Angela. I saw the beginnings of so many dynamics that didn’t seem to fully unfold by the end (Aliza & Razia’s connection, Razia’s discomfort with Taslima’s judgement on her sexuality, the racial dynamics of dating a white lesbian who doesn’t get your culture). It felt like the author set up a lot of good dynamics to interrogate but then left them all behind to wrap up the book with a hopeful(?) ending. I was wishing the whole time for Razia to explore her sexuality with someone who didn’t make her feel completely disconnected from her roots, but alas the white partner was the extent of Razia’s lesbian endeavors. It wasn’t that gruesome just skip past it, doesn’t add much to the plot.. the book itself does not revolve around animal abuse so very odd to insinuate the book is not worth reading because of an ill-fitting anecdote. ]]>
