After That Night by Karin Slaughter
"Sad to see one of your favorite writers just publishing without passion and with callousness. Karin Slaughter has lost her mojo! She needs to take a year off and come back with something innovative and captivating. She also needs a new editor—it was too long and boring. I only liked the final twist and confrontation.

Publishing the same recycled story with cardboard villains and endless plotholes is not it. Even the prose was weird and felt lazy.
Publishing just because you have to push sales and pump up the TV series/movie is not gonna work for long.

Slaughter is a great writer—I love her and her work, but ever since "Pieces of Her," the quality has been on a major decline. I think the only book I have enjoyed since 2018 is "False Witness.""

Our Own Unique Affliction by Scott J. Moses
"Our Own Unique Affliction has many strengths; there were some nice scenes here, especially the turning of humans was nicely done, and the prose is beautiful, the book has depth. Moses focuses rather on main character Alice Ann and her coping with her vampirism than anything else, more character building and though I liked that, it felt more like an excerpt of something bigger, which can be good in an experimental way. It is an interesting work as a vampire novel. I just really can’t warm up to narration in present tense and along with a nonlinear storyline that confused me a little. I’d definitely like to read something else by this author."

Hi Tawfek! Idk, but I think it helps to remind us we are not alone when we can identify with a character’s suffering. ]]>

I have it on good authority from my wonderful German friend (Danke) who has read the original German text that Gregor woke up as a beetle, and not as a monstrous cockroach or a vermin as stated in the two English translated versions that I had read.

The story is about a young man who wakes up in the form of a beetle. So what. Is this supposed to be a metaphor? I mean, I guess if I woke up as a six-legged, crawly, exoskeletoned beetle bug, I would probably repulse myself and become paralyzed with a profound sense of sadness for my inability to fulfill the life that my identity and “be -ing were built upon.

As I lay alone wallowing in my own beetle filth trying to grasp the realization that everyone I know and care about has rejected and abandoned me. The person I was, accepted and adored, would be forgotten and replaced by the hideous abomination I had become. Callous judgments would soon follow to determine how to strip me of the space and property that I had worked hard for. After that, the only relief conceivable would be the reoccurring thoughts about the inevitable end to this existence, and death would be welcomed with open arms to relieve the suffering.

So what was the big deal about waking up as a beetle?

I have read several of your reviews Monsieur, and your opinion is always welcome in my feed, whether it differs from mine or not. When I view criticism through the lens of unconditional positive regard, I accept it as encouragement to improve. However, I find praise to be more effective in creating dialogue, even as banal as it seems sometimes. Merci beaucoup d'être passé. ]]>
