I didn’t think of this book as anything special really. I don’t know if it’s an age thing? Maybe I would’ve appreciated it more if I were younger? Or older, some are saying? I get the feeling you need to be in a particular headspace when reading this to enjoy it which I would guess comes from being understood.

That being said, I really do appreciate how well Salinger captures the voice of a teenager! I also think it does a good job depicting loneliness and the struggle to form meaningful relationships and connect with people. That is a theme that will always entice people, as we are social creatures by nature, and so I consider Holden’s experience to be one that is almost universal. No wonder it’s so special to some people.

*SPOILER:*

It is definitely nuanced in terms of his implied SA, the lack of involvement from his parents, and the death of his brother. I do understand that, and I did sympathise with him for all of it. I just didn’t feel particularly attached to his character. ]]>
