I adore Lara, don’t really care for Aren (he was written fine, so I think that’s just says something about me) and I feel like the author’s genres of choice (fantasy and romance, stronger focus on fantasy). could have blended a bit better because they both ended up feeling a bit shallow and inconsistent at times.

I don’t like romance so it didn’t bother me, but I feel like the author should’ve spent a bit more time building the romance at the beginning. (And some scenes felt like the author kind of remembered that the genre was supposed to be partially romance (an adult romance at that) and needed to make up for the focus on the politics and action of everything).

Also, side note, I thought the political dilemmas were frankly kind of cheap. I won’t go into specifics, but I just thought that it was a bit weak to not take a firmer hold of the complexity of the situation, because the complexity WAS interesting and you can argue it was for the sake of a satisfying romance but the romance was so much more interesting with the complexity.

I think throughout this book, all my main issues were that I sort of just KNEW the author is a pantser, because of the odd organization of the tone and events in the book (I looked it up just now, I was right). It was never illogical, it was just odd.

Those are my main complaints, but it was good, I genuinely did enjoy it and the characters were well-written, and the dynamics of the world and the countries were intriguing and clearly had thought put into it. I just like complaining. ]]>

I’m sure this was really riveting when it was written but feels like a whole lot of nothing right now. And I say that actually liking the way Hawthorne writes. ]]>
