So calling this “read� is a stretch. I read probably 50% of the book and skimmed the other 50%. Not linearly though!! Not because it was bad but because I only had 2 hours before a book club meeting!

The good news is I think I read the best parts! I read some great stuff at the start, super juicy stuff in the middle, and more great stuff at the end!

Not giving a star rating because it wouldn’t be fair to the book, but tbh I really liked it!!

The magic system was super unique, and I loved that it was magic that was earned and worked for (even though it was ofc super problematic in world for obvious reasons).

Nobody in my book club liked Sciona, but I kinda think if she was a man we would have given her a lot more grace.

If a super ambitious man learns to *care* after meeting a woman, we swoon, but when the roles are reversed people have a problem? Smh

On the other hand I did miss huge chunks of the book so I absolutely might have hated her more if I read the whole thing lol

Pretty dense fantasy, and a lot of extremely overt and centralized sexism/ misogyny/ every ism tbh

A book about an extremely flawed society, so it doesn’t feel as escapism or easy as other fantasy, but very well written and extremely well thought out. Really quality world building

Despite what marketing might suggest this is definitely fantasy and NOT romantasy. Not making a comment, I love both, just clarifying the genre of the book here

If anyone disagrees with my views on this book you absolutely cannot hold me to them since I didn’t read the whole book!! I might disagree with my takes too!!

But yeah quality fantasy and would recommend.
