Such an easy read by telling a horrifying story from the POV of a 5 year old. Bonus points for writing so accurately as a 5 year old would think and communicate. ]]>

I never bothered with any of the post Tom Clancy books in the Jack Ryan series, partly because I wasn't sure what the quality would be like without Clancy, and partly because I didn't think there was much that could be done with the character once he became President. Turns out I was probably right on both counts. Jack Ryan is barely even in this book, not to mention there are way too many characters, and very little story for 80% of it. It's not unreadable, and when something finally happens there is some entertainment. I would say I'm one and done on post Clancy novels, but the story for the next one seems mildly interesting, so maybe I'm just too optimistic and a sucker. ]]>

A real world take on vampires, portraying them more as a viral outbreak than supernatural figures. The best bits were Neville trying to figure out the scientific basis for all the vampire myths, such as wooden stakes, garlic, etc. The worst bits were 20 pages of him trying to catch a dog. And at only 160 pages that dog catching section was a huge chunk of the book. ]]>

Based on the brief bits of this story that was told in the original trilogy this was the prequel I really wanted to read. There are some unexpected character appearances that sort of make this a setup for Catching Fire. The biggest issue is that it follows the formula of The Hunger Games so closely that the further you get into the story the fewer surprises there are, and the more predictable it becomes. ]]>
