Days at the Morisaki Bookshop by Satoshi Yagisawa
"It is a touching story about a young woman who discovers the joy of reading.

The book is a simple story about books, relationships, family, and community.

It is a joyful and easy read, especially for a vacation.

I find this book attractive because it is a well-written and engaging story.

Generally speaking, Days at the Morisaki Bookshop is a charming and enjoyable read.

This was the perfect transition book for me after my last read. It’s cute and charming, but also a surprisingly profound coming-of-age story. At under 200 pages, it’s not a long book, but it carries more emotional depth than I expected.

The story follows Takako, a woman in her twenties who feels completely unmoored after a breakup with her two-timing ex. She ends up living and working at her uncle’s bookshop in Tokyo’s bustling Jimbocho district, where the magic of books and a few unexpected relationships, help her slowly emerge from depression.

What stood out most to me was the focus on familial relationships rather than romance. In particular, Takako’s bond with her uncle and aunt is central to the story. Although her parents are technically in the picture, we never actually meet them, which made the niece/uncle/aunt dynamic all the more compelling.

I docked a star because the English translation felt a bit clunky in places—though that might just be a stylistic difference in Japanese storytelling, I’m not sure.

Trigger warning: the book includes themes of grief related to infant loss and illness. ]]>
