This book took forever for me to start and even longer then for me to finish, though my reading pace gradually returned to its typical speed as I neared the end of the novel.

I'm not quite sure what to say about this one. I thought it was well-written, though it seemed a bit confused on whether it wanted to focus on the union of William Shakespeare and Agnes (Anne) Hathaway or on the effects of Hamnet's death on the family. I'm not sure it ever finds the focal point but I think it is good at both modes. There's a magical realism element to this book that also kind of clashed with the novel's intention of being fiction rooted in real history.

The emotion behind Agnes's character and story felt the most realized and the book was at its most potent when following Agnes.
