Owie.

I knew... but I still haz a boo boo. We knew where Haymitch's story would end. Maybe not the particulars. But dang. Did we fall out of a tree and hit every branch on the way down.

Seriously though, I was annoyed beyond words when all people could focus on for the original trilogy was TeAm PeEtA or tEaM gAlE and completely missed the point. My personal opinion is that Suzanne Collins is a master class author for PTSD. Show-don't-tell at its finest. At the end of the day, Katniss chose based on selfish need while she was reeling from PTSD. She picked who could help her. Not based on love. People rolled their eyes, but after this book I am utterly convinced of this theory. I detest love triangles with every fiber of my being. But this is one of exactly two stories I've read where it works because it was a mechanism to show character formation.

Great throwbacks to past characters and historical events. Great foreshadowing to future ones. My two gripes... I could do without the Edgar Allen Poe, honestly. I didn't particularly care for Lenore, and she got way too much page time for not being anywhere in the geographical vicinity. Also, call me barbaric. But I wanted more fighting and brutality in the arena. *insert ginger bread voice* I'm a MONster. But these are the most non-issue issues I can drum up. Collins is an incredible writer, and I doubt I'll ever get tired of visiting Panem.

She has come so far from the days of writing "Little Bear." I'm proud of her, you know?

I'd rate this a PG-13 for violence and some gore, mild swearing, and mature themes.

Oops. My memory is murky on this because I finished it about five months ago. I recall this book was very Halloween candy-esque. Read too many books like these and they'll eventually rot your brains out of your head. But in moderation for empty mental calories? It's fine.

I'd absolutely rate this an R for adult themes, sexual scenes, and swearing.

I've always wanted to visit Iceland; I still plan to one day. Recently, my brother DID get to visit. One of the pictures he sent of the Icelandic landscape he captioned as "a harsh beauty." If this series is one of Nordic noir's claims to fame, I would say it matched that vibe. I enjoyed the twists and turns along the way, AND the ending caught me off guard. Although I can't say more without likely causing spoilers, this book is well worth the read.

I'd rate this an R for adult themes and swearing.
