Okay, I officially love this author.
I loved Everything We Never Said and I jumped at the chance to read an eARC of All We Lost Was Everything. I admit I was nervous that I wouldn’t enjoy this book as much without the whole whodunnit Fear vibes I got from the author’s first book, but I loved this book.
River was really going through it, basically being peppered with nothing but lemons from life. She lost her dad and all of her possessions in a house fire she barely survived the same night her serious boyfriend ending things unexpectedly and her mom disappeared on one of her depression hikes and hadn’t come back for quite awhile. But as she was moving on and figuring her life out, she started to fall for her grumpy coworker who was perfect
We also got Logan’s POV and it was clear he was hiding something, but we just didn’t know what that was. He seemed like he genuinely cared about River, so what was with the secrets??
I loved unraveling the mystery and trying to figure everything out. There were a lot of strange things that happened and yet none of them were really connected, but all of them impacted River who just wanted the truth of everything. I couldn’t put this book down! I was genuinely surprised by how things turned out. I definitely recommend this to fans of darker themes (trauma, mystery), romance, and coming of age. ]]>

Had I not read Never Let Me Go, I think I’d have loved Klara and the Sun. It was similar in theme with a setting that felt close to present day but with a few differences we had to sort of figure out through conversational clues. Never Let Me Go told a story about what it means to be human in a way that is hard to top, so naturally I felt disappointed by the subtlety and direction of Klara. ]]>

I don’t think I’d classify this book as adult contemporary romance, not just due to the lack of spice, but because of the whole high school feel of the book. Jaymerson was in high school and was worried about her image until a car crash injured her and her boyfriend’s twin brother and killed her boyfriend. Afterwards, she began to wonder where she fit and realized she didn’t like her life at all. I think the premise would have been good had it not been so focused on high school stereotypes, jocks and outcasts, image, rumors, and self esteem and the blurb doesn’t really allude to it being that way at all. ]]>
