I really liked this story but felt the choice of narrative style gave it a tinge of hokey-ness. Too bad because this had some serious emotional potential. The omniscient point of view was good, 1st person point of view via Finn was not. ]]>

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by Victoria E. Schwab
"During a brief trip with her father to Le Mans, Addie becomes quickly enamored with the city. She returns to her small village with her head full of hopes and dreams. The older she gets the more she wants to leave the town and be free. However, she has been required to marry a local townsman. Right before her wedding, she ends up making a deal with the dark god to be free and live forever. Her wish is granted, but not as Addie had envisioned. Everyone that she meets is unable to remember her the next time they see her.

What I liked:
- The premise is intriguing. I wanted to see how this would play out over the course over several hundred years.
- The fluctuation between present day and the past years leading up to the present. I particularly liked the historical eras that were referenced such as the World Wars and burning of Paris. Just wish these were more drawn out as opposed to just quickly thrown in.
- For once, I actually liked an ending! 😲

What I didn’t like:
- Something seemed off with the character development. I can’t really put my finger on it, but it’s like I cared about the story and where it was going, but I didn’t feel anything for the characters. Or maybe I just don’t have a heart.🤷🏻‍♀
- What I liked is also something I disliked. The timelines. They could’ve been cut back or at least expanded into more detail as they seemed to be repetitious of each other.

I once again am struggling with rating a book. The idea behind this was really good, I just felt like it needed some of the repetitious aspects removed to be shorter or have some removed and expand upon the backstory a little bit more in depth. I think I’ve settled on 3.5 rounded up to 4. "

bookshelves: historical-fiction
A 700 plus page book is always a little daunting at first but once I cut a grove and become invested I enjoy a good generational saga. This one spans 77 years and two continents. The characters are engaging and easy to love (except maybe Philipose, he’s a little harder to love than all the others). There is a lot of interesting history and culture throughout. I was pleasantly surprised by a few nicely done twists.

As is the case with all lengthy novels, The Covenant of Water has its sluggish parts. The cause in this particular story is the very detailed description of setting and of every minute detail of several medical procedures and surgeries. I find this to be unavoidable in these longer stories and just muddle through it.

Overall, I enjoyed this novel and would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction and/or generational sagas. I happen to like both. ]]>
