Love anything and everything written by Shirley Jackson. She is a master of both horror and humor. These are short stories that were discovered by her children years after her death. If you're like me and enjoyed Life Among the Savages (humorous and witty depiction of American domestic life in the 1950s), you'll find more stories here that follow that same thread. Or if you are a fan of The Haunting of Hill House, there are stories here that are equally spine tingling. ]]>

A wonderful collection of short essays divided into 3 categories: Coming to the Kitchen, Reading and Writing the Kitchen, and Beyond the Kitchen. I loved how unique each essay was, how diverse, and the order in which they are arranged. I am especially drawn to this collection as it connects different cultures along a common thread: FOOD <3 ]]>

The synopsis alone is what caught my attention: a woman comes home to find a waiting husband, yet she has never been married. Throw in a magical attic where each time a husband goes up, a new one comes down and her life gets a "reset." Each time.

The length of the story was a tad longer than I expected but there is so much dry humor and eccentricities that I was engaged the whole time. I also love how it is set primarily in London.

There are still some things left for interpretation by the end. Overall, I did enjoy this odd/whimsical/somewhat heartfelt story. ]]>

Loved loved loved this book. It encompasses all the feelings I have towards work/like balance, reading, safe spaces, community, and life in general (that's saying A LOT). I read this was the author's debut novel, which is pretty amazing. I suspect the author put pieces of herself into the many different characters we come across in the story. I love how the chapters are short and numerous from different points of views but still follow a common thread. The culmination of "vignette" style writing with a modern take on "adulting" contributes to a universally understood feeling that translates very well onto paper. This is a book I would definitely want to re-read again in the near future. ]]>

I love this story. I cried a bunch of tears, which may partly be due to me being currently sick in bed and I hate being sick... but anyways....

This is a beautiful story for anyone, especially those who spent a good chunk of their childhood reading a beloved magical book or book series. For me, it was the Sweet Valley Twins series and "The Secret of Platform 13" and "Ella Enchanted." Those type of books that transport you to another world when you're a kid. This is another one that carries the same effect but from the point of view of the adult, coming back to that happy place. ]]>
