A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
"6 star read I’m devastated it’s over

After the events of the first ACOTAR book, Feyre returns to the Spring Court with Tamlin, where she struggles with the trauma from Under the Mountain and accepting her new fae existence, as well as her growing powers. Tamlin, too, is struggling, becoming overprotective and possessive, which greatly affects their once sweet romance.

Never far away, Rhysand swoops in to ensure Feyre remains true to their bargain—one week a month of her time is to be spent with him at the Night Court. It is here, in 'enemy' territory, that Feyre begins to heal from the trauma, learn more about her powers, and find her role in the looming war against Hybern. Feyre also discovers a found family in Rhysand's inner circle and eventually uncovers the well-kept secret behind Rhysand’s growing interest in her.

Oh, I was so in love with this book. I slowed my reading down because I didn’t want it to end. SJM is a master at keeping a reader interested even when things don’t seem to be happening or progressing. Yet at the same time, she does move the story along. Her writing is clear, and her worlds are vibrant, cosy. As for her characters I wish they were real. Rhysand is my ultimate book boyfriend, and I can’t imagine any other character taking that position from him (though I am searching). I knew there was a shift of love interest from book one of the ACOTAR series, so I definitely came into this one a little biased. I wasn’t shocked by it - rather, I was waiting for it. I did find the vilifying of Tamlin over the top, sometimes hard to accept, but it worked well for the story. That break up note, however? Harsh ... oh so harsh.

The slow-burn was delicious, the Night Court and Velaris were magical (literally), and Rhys inner circle was wonderful (I want them as my friends)."

Wholehearted 5 stars for books 1 and 2. Flip flopped in book 3 between it being a little dull to it being gorgeously eloquent. Overall, brilliant. I have never read the perpetual anxieties and insecurities of women so perfectly described, and the trick of having a man voice so many of them was, I found, a bit terrifying. ]]>

Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier
"Beautifully written, very evocative of time and place. Quite hopeful for what is relatively grim subject matter. Only reduced from five stars by a slight lull in the narrative between 60% to 80% of the way through."
