Julia Wertz really comes into her own in this new memoir. While she has been releasing autobiographical comics for over a decade, this is by far her most bracing and brutally honest work, as she traces her struggles with addiction and the long and bumpy road to recovery without ever letting go of her trademark snark and disarmingly crude sense of humor. There’s a patience and palpable affection to her portrayal of her bohemian life as a New York comic artist, particularly her striking renderings of neighborhood buildings, which lend a sense of place and time to the book’s events that complement the simple universality of her characters and their many conversations and dramas. A good number of comics artists came to prominence in the first decade of the 2000s with their irreverent takes on young adult life, and Wertz was no exception, but her work has matured immensely while still managing to retain a sense of playful vulgarity that’s an absolute joy to read. ]]>
