Dalton gave 3 stars to The Age of Jackson (Hardcover) by Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr.
The Age of Jackson was originally published in 1945 and while many aspects of this historical text read well-enough today and the prose itself is never clunky, this does read very much like a history book from 1945. That is to say, there are simply topics which would today be included in a text like this that are simply not here or barely mentioned. Today it seems impossible to adequately write about Andrew Jackson as a president and a leader or a larger political/ cultural movement without discussing slavery and the treatment of Indian tribes. But Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. does exactly that here. I am also more than alright with a book having a bias with it (bias is impossible to avoid) but what is striking in reading this is how little thought Schlesinger seems to put into any sort of criticism about this era of history. There’s a certain veneer here to the era of expanding democratic ideals that today can read as almost comically naïve at best and woefully inaccurate at worse. The ideals of Jacksonian democracy are highlighted here efficiently enough, and the influence of Schlesinger’s methodical deconstruction of the 1830s-1850s can be fascinating, but I ultimately found The Age of Jackson to be a strange chimera of biography, social commentary, and labor movement chronology that doesn’t fully live up to what one would hope for or likely expect to find in a history text published more recently. Influential, yes, but ultimately a product of its time.
