I read the e-book version which was titled The crimson moth which I like better as a title and the cover art was more striking too.

This was a weird one for me to rate and then try and explain why but I'll give it a shot.

The world building is excellent and I loved how vivid everything was and how expressive the writing was. I really felt part of that world and the descriptions of the locations are really good whether it's an opulent and lavish manor and estate or a squalid slum. Really well done. It's also got a late renaissance vibe which I liked.

The characters were good and I liked them but really only as individual characters. They just didn't work together. The interactions between them just didn't really take. The romance between characters didn't really help or strike me as believable nor the enemies moments or fighting siblings and not the friends moments either. They just seemed to be dialing it in or going through the motions. I just didn't believe in what they were selling to each other.

The plot is excellent. It really is. I've said before I love the Scarlet pimpernel/Three musketeers type stories and this definitely has that. There were also some strong subterfuge vibes as well as there being a lot of tension around who will crack first in a clever game of cat and mouse. The pacing was really good to and it really fit the story well.

So overall I really liked it and normally that would make it 5 stars but characterizations and especially relationships between characters are such a crucial element I just can't rate it above 4 stars. Hopefully the next one in the series can move past this and the characters really come into their own.
